The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth.

Patricia Racette sings Nedda, his unfaithful young wife, whose plans to run away with her lover are foiled by her spurned admirer Tonio (George Gagnidze)—with equally tragic consequences. The Bridge School Concerts 25th Anniversary Digital Edition allows you, for the first time, to experience the best of the renowned Bridge School Benefit Concerts from your computer and mobile devices while helping The Bridge School, an innovative organization educating children with severe speech and physical impairments. The Concert series began in 1986 when Pegi Young, co-founder of The Bridge School, enlisted her husband, Neil Young, and friends to play an all acoustic concert to benefit the Bridge School in its founding year. That concert, featuring Don Henley, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young started a tradition that has lasted to the present day. The 25th Anniversary Edition showcases some of the many highlights from the past 25 years, featuring 25 rare and acoustic performances from artists such as Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Bonnie Raitt, Metallica, The Who, and (of course) Neil Young. The program also features a documentary on The Bridge School as well as a behind-the-scenes look at The Bridge School Benefit Concerts. "The Bridge School Story" is a portrait of the school and its mission, as told by co-founder Pegi Young, Executive Director Dr. Vicki R. Casella, and the staff of The Bridge School. "Backstage at the Bridge School Concerts" explores what makes the concerts such a personally memorable experience for all participants: the artists, fans, concert staff, and most importantly, the students, graduates, and parents of The Bridge School.

After the acclaimed Met premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Tempest in 2012, the composer returned with another masterpiece, this time inspired by filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s seminal surrealist classic El Ángel Exterminador, during the 2017–18 season. As the opera opens, a group of elegant socialites gather for a lavish dinner party, but when it is time to leave for the night, no one is able to escape. Soon, their behavior becomes increasingly erratic and savage. The large ensemble cast tackles both the vocal and dramatic demands of Adès’s opera with one riveting performance after another. Tom Cairns, who also penned the work’s libretto, directs an engrossing and inventive production, using a towering wooden archway to trap the characters onstage. And Adès himself takes the podium to conduct the frenzied score, which features a host of unconventional instruments, including the eerie electronic ondes Martenot.

First staged at the Weimar Court Theatre under the baton of Richard Strauss in 1893, who hailed it as “a masterpiece of the highest quality”, Humperdinck's debut opera Hänsel und Gretel has remained a solid favourite since its 1893 première. Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) transformed Grimm’s beloved fairy tale “Hänsel und Gretel” into opera entertainment for everyone from young children to the serious music lover. This staging is a tumultuous and joyful production for both children and adults. Director Katharina Thalbach cheerfully evokes a magic world of woodland sprites and candy dreams and creates an enchanting fantasy world filled with high spirits, fairytale fantasy and genial comedy. Recorded live at the world-famous Dresden Semperoper in December 2006, the production is also musically of the highest rank, with international soloists in the main roles, accompanied by the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden under Michael Hofstetter.

Claudio Abbado had realized a dream with his Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The orchestra, an exclusive ensemble of handpicked orchestral musicians, opened up new dimensions in the interpretation of symphonic music, especially with the interpretation of works by Gustav Mahler, with exceptional soloists such as violinist Kolja Blacher, cellist Natalia Gutman and clarinetist Sabine Meyer filling the first desks. The sixth symphony – first performed in 1906 and sometimes referred to as “Tragic” – ends on a much sadder, almost nihilistic, note than most of the other Mahler symphonies. This imposing music is captured live in a performance marked by awesome silences and towering climaxes conjured by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

Black Label Society, formed in the late nineties by legendary guitar hero Zakk Wylde, have established themselves at the forefront of heavy metal with a series of hard riffing and hugely successful albums alongside worldwide tours that have cemented their reputation as one of the most powerful live bands of their generation. “Unblackened” finds Black Label Society in a mellower mood in a performance filmed at Club Nokia in Los Angeles earlier this year. The concert showcases the band’s songs with a greater use of acoustic instruments but without losing any of their power and intensity. Zakk Wylde leads from the front as always, performing here on both guitar and piano and demonstrating the subtler side of his music alongside the blistering solos that his fans know and love. This is definitely a live concert not to be missed!

Dizzy Gillespie is one of the major figures of the 20th Century's music scene. Much has been said about this genius, one of the founding fathers of bebop with Charlie Parker. Whereas Dizzy’s public life is well-known, few know of his modest personal life, nor of his close friendship with the Swiss engineer Jacques Muyal – “the only jazz musician who doesn’t play an instrument” (Paquito D’Rivera). This film takes an intimate look at Jack Johnson’s music and tour greening initiatives. When Jack goes on the road, he doesn’t just show up and play music. The tour partners with local non-profits, local food vendors and strives to leave a lasting positive impact. The entire tour is an extension of the environmentally conscious and socially engaged life he leads along with his wife, Kim. After years on the road, playing venues around the globe, the Johnson’s have established an inspiring way of touring with a focus on creating as little impact on the earth as possible. Along the way, the tour gives a platform to dozens of local non-profits working to educate and inspire others to make choices that benefit our communities and the greater global environment. While following Jack’s 2014 west coast tour, this film highlights the Johnson‘s Kokua Hawaii Foundation, the All At Once campaign, and several non-profit partners and businesses focusing on plastic free initiatives and sustainable local food systems. Additionally, the film highlights the unique way in which tour is run. From traveling on biodiesel-powered buses, to sourcing organic and locally grown meals to carefully disposing of waste created along the way. The goal of the tour and this documentary is to inspire people to get involved, make the right choices, and enjoy the music along the way.

Ever since her first Met performances as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2000, Renée Fleming has been celebrated as one of the most compelling interpreters of the role. In this Live in HD transmission, broadcast nearly two decades later, the silver-voiced American soprano sings her final performance as the elegant princess coming to grips with the persistent passage of time. Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča delivers a commanding portrayal as Octavian, the title “Knight of the Rose” and the Marschallin’s impetuous young lover, in Robert Carsen’s madcap new production—which sets the action in 1911, the year of the work’s premiere. As the plucky young heiress Sophie, Erin Morley sings with a radiantly beautiful soprano, while bass Günther Groissböck offers a larger-than-life portrayal of Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau, the outlandish nobleman lusting after every woman in sight. And tenor Matthew Polenzani excites with his cameo appearance as the Italian Singer in Act I. Maestro Sebastian Weigle leads a buoyant account of Strauss’s beloved score, which incorporates Viennese waltzes, raucous comedy, and the composer’s characteristically vivid palette of orchestral color.

The Met assembled an ideal cast for François Girard’s acclaimed new production of Wagner’s final masterpiece. Jonas Kaufmann in the title role of the fool “made wise by compassion” is as convincing vocally as he is haunting dramatically, delivering a thoroughly moving portrayal. René Pape is equally compelling as Gurnemanz, the veteran Knight of the Grail, and Katarina Dalayman thrillingly brings out the dual sides of Kundry. Peter Mattei is Amfortas, the anguished ruler of the Grail’s kingdom, and Evgeny Nikitin sings the evil magician Klingsor. Daniele Gatti on the podium reveals both the serenity and dramatic tension of what may be Wagner’s greatest score.

Acclaimed musician Kathryn Calder is touring the world with one of Canada’s biggest indie rock bands, The New Pornographers, when she receives devastating news: her mother, Lynn, has ALS, and a short time left to live. Kathryn learns that ALS is a progressive, paralyzing disease, with no treatment or cure. A terminal illness requiring full time care. She consequently decides to return to her childhood home, committed to being her mom's primary caregiver through the final months of her life. The foundation of Lynn and Kathryn's bond goes beyond mother and daughter—they share a love of music. Lynn, a former piano teacher, has always dreamed of seeing her daughter in the spotlight, singing her own songs. Inspired to make something beautiful amidst the grief and trauma of this long, painful goodbye, Kathryn transforms the living room of their house into a studio. With her mother in bed just down the hall and her condition worsening every day, Kathryn will fill the house with music and make a record—her first solo album—a parting gift for her biggest fan. A Matter of Time is a heart-breaking yet hopeful documentary that examines the power of love and music, and the inspiration, salvation, and possibility that occurs when these two forces intersect with the most challenging moment in a young musician's life.

This Claudio Abbado recording captures a very special night at the 2007 Lucerne Festival with the 3rd symphony by Gustav Mahler. Ever since its debut in 2003, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been enthusiastically received by public and press alike. The orchestra is the realisation of a dream for Claudio Abbado, who handpicked famous soloists, chamber recitalists and orchestral musicians to form this ensemble. The line-up includes such luminaries as Kolja Blacher and Sabine Meyer, alongside sundry members of the world’s great orchestras. The cello section alone boasts Natalia Gutman, Clemens Hagen and Valentin Erben. The popular work, completed in 1896, became famous through Luciano Visconti’s film “Death in Venice”, where the catchy “Midnight Song” from the Fourth movement serves as a prominent theme. Claudio Abbado is undeniably a supreme Mahler conductor and his recordings of Mahler’s Nos. 5, 6 and 7 symphonies with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and have set new standards in interpretation of Gustav Mahler’s works. For this performance orchestra and conductor are joined by singer Anna Larsson, the Arnold Schoenberg Choir Vienna and the famous Bavarian Tölz Boys Choir. Join in the imposing experience of a live performance of Mahler’s No.3 with its awesome silences and towering climaxes recorded in the acoustically superb Congress and Concert Hall Lucerne on August 19, 2007.

Get ready to mosh in the privacy of your own home, because multiple Grammy-nominated, Platinum-selling thrash masters ANTHRAX have announced the release of “Chile On Hell”! “Chile On Hell” was filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10, 2013, and features Anthrax – Joey Belladonna/vocals, Scott Ian/guitar, Charlie Benante/drums, Frank Bello/bass and Jon Donais/lead guitar. The band performed an extended set that featured songs from Anthrax’s entire catalogue – all the fan-favorites including “I Am The Law," “Indians,” “Madhouse,” “Caught In A Mosh,” “The Devil You Know," and “I’m Alive”. "Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this,” said Anthrax’s Charlie Benante. "When we’d played there in the past, we’d finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room, but every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn’t stop. One time Scott and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn’t we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?" The band was in the home stretch of a three-plus-year campaign to record and support Worship Music and the Anthems EP, a period of time that was loaded with high points: the return of “classic era” vocalist Joey Belladonna, Worship Music making the band’s highest chart debut in two decades, the series of Big Four shows – Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica, the three bands that wrote the speed and thrash metal road map – that culminated in the September 2011 Big Four spectacular at Yankee Stadium in the band’s home town of New York, “Anthrax Day” declared in the Bronx, becoming the first metal band to have its music (“Got The Time”) played on Mars, two Grammy nominations, and sold out shows in every corner of the globe – “We wanted to finish on a high note".

Inni is Sigur Rós' second live film following 2007's tour documentary Heima. Whereas that film positioned the group in the context of their Icelandic homeland, providing geographical, social and historical perspectives on their music, Inni focuses purely on the band's performance, and stands as a stark counterpoint to Heima's kaleidoscopic richness. Where Heima was lush and colorfully expansive, Inni is spare and near-monochromatic in its tunnel vision. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia, Inni cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band, eschewing the audience for closeness, depicting how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live.

A new score has been specially commissioned from GRAMMY nominated composer Tarik O‘Regan. Margaretha Zelle is one of the most infamous and iconic women in Dutch history. Desperate to escape the boundaries of reality, Margaretha reinvented herself as the exotic, Javanese princess Mata Hari.
