In its 2016 Christmas concert, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir joined with the Orchestra at Temple Square, the Bells on the Temple Square, and international opera superstar Rolando Villazón in a celebration of Christmas that focused on childlike simplicity and youthful enthusiasm. Dancers and actors from the local community also joined in, thrilling the combined capacity audience of over 60, 000 in the Conference Center at Temple Square. This live recording from the concert includes favorite songs and carols from around the world that celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. From the 18th-century German carol “O Come, Little Children” to the French song “Il est né” and the traditional Andalusian song “Campana Sobre Campana”—a favorite among Spanish-speaking children even today—the invitation is extended to everyone to join with children in reflecting on the Christmas message. Mack Wilberg’s processional based on “The Little Drummer Boy” similarly reverences a child’s offering at Christmas. With the toy-like charm of the orchestra’s “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and the cinematic sweep of “Christmas Children” from the movie Scrooge, this concert was indeed a celebration of youthful wonder at Christmas time.

Summary: Wotan fears that the Nibelung, Alberich, might again try to steal the Rheingold. This can only be prevented by a free hero who is not subject to divine laws. Wotan’s earthly twin children, Siegmund and Sieglinde, are to bear witness to this. 1. Act: Siegmund takes shelter from a storm in Hunding’s hut, where his sister also lives as Hunding’s wife, Sieglinde. Because she was forced to marry early, the twins do not recognise each other. Hunding grants him shelter for the night, but demands a duel the next day. Whilst the host is asleep, Sieglinde tells the guest of a sword which is embedded in an ash tree, and that it can only be withdrawn by a chosen one. When Siegmund succeeds in doing this, the siblings recognise each other, and subsequently sire in incestuous passion the free hero, Siegfried. 2. Act: In divine spheres, the gods Wotan and Fricka argue. Wotan wants to send his daughter, the Valkyrie Brünnhilde, to help Siegmund in the duel, but his wife Fricka, as the guardian of the marriage, demands retribution for the sibling love, and for the deception of Hunding. Wotan resignedly gives in and tells Brünnhilde all of the story. She is so fascinated by the love of the twins that she still supports Siegmund and helps the pregnant Sieglinde escape to the Valkyrie cliffs. Furious, Wotan joins in the fight. Hunding kills Siegmund and soon afterwards meets his own death. 3. Act: The daughters of Wotan meet on the Valkyrie cliffs in order to lead the fallen heroes to Valhalla. Brünnhilde reveals to Sieglinde that she will give birth to a hero, and she also gives her the fragments of the shattered sword from the ash tree. As Sieglinde escapes, the daughter stands up to her wrathful father, who, with a heavy heart, robs her of her divinity and banishes her to a mountain peak, swept with flames, from which she can only be saved by a fearless hero.

Rush: R40 Live – Rush

Rush: R40 Live

Rush

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 19.99

Release Date: January 1, 2015

All roads have led to this. Forty-one years in the making, the R40 Live tour took a very real journey back through time. Beginning with the grand design: a state-of-the-art stage set that pivots, rolls and dives, and brings Clockwork Angels in to bombastic, colorful life before marching stridently back in time (through theatre stages, a panoply of band and fan shots, the accrued memories of a life spent playing live) to a mocked-up school gym and the band playing there; a solitary bass amp set on the chair behind Geddy Lee, a mirror ball spiraling crazily above, casting thin rods of light like a light rain across the crowd, “Working Man” coming to a shuddering halt as the band’s beginning becomes their end. Rush recorded and filmed R40 Live over two sold-out shows in the band’s hometown of Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on June 17 & 19, 2015 in the middle of their R40 Live 35-date North American tour. R40 Live had the trio of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart, performing a career-spanning live retrospective, celebrating their 40+ years together. The epic live shows by the Rock Hall of Famers were captured with 14 cameras to present the band feature-film style. The center-point of this tour was the remarkable setlist, coupled with their idea of a “de-evolution” set design. When the band opened the show with cuts “Headlong Flight” and “The Anarchist” from their most recent studio recording, 2012’s Clockwork Angels, they did so with all the bells and whistles from that extensive tour. They worked backwards through their catalogue as the show progressed, the innovative set design making for constant visual eye-candy, as stagehands exchanged the gear and props on stage to resemble the era-correct tour staging in accordance with the songs being played. The first set featured the infamous dryers on stage while they played “Roll The Bones,” “Subdivisions,” and for the first time ever live, “Losing It” featuring violinist Ben Mink, who appeared on the original studio recording from 1982’s Signals. The second set opened with classics “Tom Sawyer,” followed by crowd favorite, “The Spirit of Radio,” but also included “Jacob’s Ladder,” which hasn’t been performed live since 1980 on their Permanent Waves tour. The last few songs of the R40 were set against the persimmon curtained theatre-looking stage, with the crowd raising their lighters and camera phones to “Closer to the Heart,” and then Alex and Geddy appeared with their signature doubleneck guitars as they played Xanadu, into the epic “2112” and encored with “Lakeside Park/Anthem” and “What You’re Doing/Working Man.” The concert film also includes the the band’s renowned tour videos, highlighted by “Roll The Bones (R40 Live),” that features an array of special guests in the rap part of the song: Jay Baruchel (She’s Out Of My League), Les Claypool (Primus), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), The Trailer Park Boys, and Jason Segel & Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man). It is the first time the band put the song back in the setlist since the R30 tour, a full decade ago. During the R40 Live tour, “Roll The Bones” gained new life and became a fan-favorite with an arena sing-along to the chorus “Why are we here? Because we’re here – Roll The Bones.” R40 Live audio was produced by Rush & David Botrill, and mixed by David Botrill (Tool, Muse); the film was directed by Dale Heslip, and produced by Allan Weinrib. The live photograph on the cover of R40 was shot by baseball Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, who captured the band in a rare moment when both Geddy Lee and Alex LIfeson were on Neil Peart’s drum kit riser.

Her third studio album, Born This Way, was released on May 23, 2011. The first single from the album, title track "Born This Way", set a music industry record by becoming the fastest single in history to reach sales of 1,000,000 copies (five days after its February 11th release). Only the 19th single to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (issue date February 26,2011), the recording was Lady Gaga's third #1 on the chart. On iTunes, the song debuted at the top spot in 14 countries, including the U.S., and hit #1 in all 23 iTunes stores worldwide its first week out. “Born This Way” was Gaga’s 7th single to hit #1 at Top 40. Her contributions to the music industry have garnered her numerous achievements including five Grammy Awards amongst twelve nominations, two Guinness World Records and the estimated sale of 23 million albums and 60 million singles worldwide. Billboard named her both the "2010 Artist of the Year" and the top selling artist of 2010 ranking her as the 73rd Artist of the 2000s decade. Gaga has been included in Time's annual "The 2010 Time 100" list of the most influential people in the world as well as Forbes' list of the "The World's Most Powerful Celebrities" in the world. The history behind this recording began in 2012, which was a year of major achievements for Heart. In addition to Ann and Nancy’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and news that they had been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the year was filed with musical accomplishments. Ann and Nancy Wilson combed their archives for a definitive four CD box set release in the early part of the year, and in the fall of 2012, released their “Fanatic” album to strong critical and fan acclaim. To support the release of “Fanatic,” the band embarked upon a major North American headline tour, which ended with a magnificent performance at Caesars Colosseum in Windsor, Ontario, which was filmed by AXS-TV. Heart has long been associated with Canada having broken out in Vancouver in 1976 with the release of “Dreamboat Annie” and their return to Canada for the “Fanatic” tour was greeted with the kind of enthusiasm the Canadians save for their own. Ben Mink, who produced the “Fanatic” CD and is another great musical Canadian musician, joined Ann and Nancy on stage at Windsor, playing fiddle and leading a string ensemble. In addition to songs from the “Fanatic” album which were performed for the first time for the television viewing audience, “Fanatic Live From Caesars Colosseum” also showcases many of Heart's classic hits including “Barracuda,” “Crazy on You,” “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” and many more. Over the group's four-decade history, Heart had different lineups, with the constant center of the group since 1974 being sisters lead singer Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson. To date, Heart has sold over 30 million records worldwide, including over 22 million in album sales in the U.S. The group was ranked number 57 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". With Top 10 albums on the Billboard Album Chart in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s, Heart is among the most commercially enduring Rock bands in history.

The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth.

After the acclaimed Met premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Tempest in 2012, the composer returned with another masterpiece, this time inspired by filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s seminal surrealist classic El Ángel Exterminador, during the 2017–18 season. As the opera opens, a group of elegant socialites gather for a lavish dinner party, but when it is time to leave for the night, no one is able to escape. Soon, their behavior becomes increasingly erratic and savage. The large ensemble cast tackles both the vocal and dramatic demands of Adès’s opera with one riveting performance after another. Tom Cairns, who also penned the work’s libretto, directs an engrossing and inventive production, using a towering wooden archway to trap the characters onstage. And Adès himself takes the podium to conduct the frenzied score, which features a host of unconventional instruments, including the eerie electronic ondes Martenot.

Claudio Abbado had realized a dream with his Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The orchestra, an exclusive ensemble of handpicked orchestral musicians, opened up new dimensions in the interpretation of symphonic music, especially with the interpretation of works by Gustav Mahler, with exceptional soloists such as violinist Kolja Blacher, cellist Natalia Gutman and clarinetist Sabine Meyer filling the first desks. The sixth symphony – first performed in 1906 and sometimes referred to as “Tragic” – ends on a much sadder, almost nihilistic, note than most of the other Mahler symphonies. This imposing music is captured live in a performance marked by awesome silences and towering climaxes conjured by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

Black Label Society, formed in the late nineties by legendary guitar hero Zakk Wylde, have established themselves at the forefront of heavy metal with a series of hard riffing and hugely successful albums alongside worldwide tours that have cemented their reputation as one of the most powerful live bands of their generation. “Unblackened” finds Black Label Society in a mellower mood in a performance filmed at Club Nokia in Los Angeles earlier this year. The concert showcases the band’s songs with a greater use of acoustic instruments but without losing any of their power and intensity. Zakk Wylde leads from the front as always, performing here on both guitar and piano and demonstrating the subtler side of his music alongside the blistering solos that his fans know and love. This is definitely a live concert not to be missed!

Ray Charles was one of the true pioneers of soul music. Born in Georgia in 1930 he was one of the first performers to mix gospel, R & B and jazz to create a new form of black pop music that would come to be known as soul. His voice and delivery were strikingly different and instantly recognisable. He had his first hits in the early 50’s and was still hitting the charts into the 21st century. His death in June 2004 was front page news around the world and was followed by the award winning biographical movie Ray. This concert was filmed on 19 July 1997 at what was to be Ray Charles last appearance at Montreux, some two decades after he first took to the stage there.

Dizzy Gillespie is one of the major figures of the 20th Century's music scene. Much has been said about this genius, one of the founding fathers of bebop with Charlie Parker. Whereas Dizzy’s public life is well-known, few know of his modest personal life, nor of his close friendship with the Swiss engineer Jacques Muyal – “the only jazz musician who doesn’t play an instrument” (Paquito D’Rivera). Through previously unreleased musical archives and interviews, this film explores the friendship of this legendary musician and a man in love with jazz – let the beat go on!

This film takes an intimate look at Jack Johnson’s music and tour greening initiatives. When Jack goes on the road, he doesn’t just show up and play music. The tour partners with local non-profits, local food vendors and strives to leave a lasting positive impact. The entire tour is an extension of the environmentally conscious and socially engaged life he leads along with his wife, Kim. After years on the road, playing venues around the globe, the Johnson’s have established an inspiring way of touring with a focus on creating as little impact on the earth as possible. Along the way, the tour gives a platform to dozens of local non-profits working to educate and inspire others to make choices that benefit our communities and the greater global environment. While following Jack’s 2014 west coast tour, this film highlights the Johnson‘s Kokua Hawaii Foundation, the All At Once campaign, and several non-profit partners and businesses focusing on plastic free initiatives and sustainable local food systems. Additionally, the film highlights the unique way in which tour is run. From traveling on biodiesel-powered buses, to sourcing organic and locally grown meals to carefully disposing of waste created along the way. The goal of the tour and this documentary is to inspire people to get involved, make the right choices, and enjoy the music along the way.

Ever since her first Met performances as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2000, Renée Fleming has been celebrated as one of the most compelling interpreters of the role. In this Live in HD transmission, broadcast nearly two decades later, the silver-voiced American soprano sings her final performance as the elegant princess coming to grips with the persistent passage of time. Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča delivers a commanding portrayal as Octavian, the title “Knight of the Rose” and the Marschallin’s impetuous young lover, in Robert Carsen’s madcap new production—which sets the action in 1911, the year of the work’s premiere. As the plucky young heiress Sophie, Erin Morley sings with a radiantly beautiful soprano, while bass Günther Groissböck offers a larger-than-life portrayal of Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau, the outlandish nobleman lusting after every woman in sight. And tenor Matthew Polenzani excites with his cameo appearance as the Italian Singer in Act I. Maestro Sebastian Weigle leads a buoyant account of Strauss’s beloved score, which incorporates Viennese waltzes, raucous comedy, and the composer’s characteristically vivid palette of orchestral color.

The Met assembled an ideal cast for François Girard’s acclaimed new production of Wagner’s final masterpiece. Jonas Kaufmann in the title role of the fool “made wise by compassion” is as convincing vocally as he is haunting dramatically, delivering a thoroughly moving portrayal. René Pape is equally compelling as Gurnemanz, the veteran Knight of the Grail, and Katarina Dalayman thrillingly brings out the dual sides of Kundry. Peter Mattei is Amfortas, the anguished ruler of the Grail’s kingdom, and Evgeny Nikitin sings the evil magician Klingsor. Daniele Gatti on the podium reveals both the serenity and dramatic tension of what may be Wagner’s greatest score.

Kathryn learns that ALS is a progressive, paralyzing disease, with no treatment or cure. A terminal illness requiring full time care. She consequently decides to return to her childhood home, committed to being her mom's primary caregiver through the final months of her life. The foundation of Lynn and Kathryn's bond goes beyond mother and daughter—they share a love of music. Lynn, a former piano teacher, has always dreamed of seeing her daughter in the spotlight, singing her own songs. Inspired to make something beautiful amidst the grief and trauma of this long, painful goodbye, Kathryn transforms the living room of their house into a studio. With her mother in bed just down the hall and her condition worsening every day, Kathryn will fill the house with music and make a record—her first solo album—a parting gift for her biggest fan. A Matter of Time is a heart-breaking yet hopeful documentary that examines the power of love and music, and the inspiration, salvation, and possibility that occurs when these two forces intersect with the most challenging moment in a young musician's life.

Rossini’s rarely heard comedy receives a brilliant performance in Bartlett Sher’s Met premiere production, with a trio of today’s greatest bel canto stars in the leading roles: Juan Diego Flórez is Count Ory, a handsome rogue who finds women – all women – irresistible. Diana Damrau sings the virtuous Countess Adèle, and Joyce DiDonato is Isolier, the count’s page, who is also in love with the countess. Jokes, misunderstandings, and gender-bending disguises – including knights dressed as nuns – abound in this hilarious tale of deception and seduction. Maurizio Benini conducts.
