The Reebok Club C Revenge Plus Is a Fresh Take on an Iconic ’80s Tennis Shoe

With spring and summer fast approaching, the 2020 Summer Games are on everyone’s minds. We’ve started seeing some of the newest innovations unveiled—everything from Olympics medal stand looks to track spikes to skateboarding uniforms—and now there are lifestyle drops with a heavy skew toward sport. One of our favorites thus far is Reebok’s International Sports Heritage Collection. And we’re all over the Reebok Club C Revenge Plus.

The Most Stylish Sneakers to Wear With a Suit

It’s obvious the Club C draws style cues from vintage tennis aesthetics. Hallmarks of the ’80s court design are all here: The low top dips below your ankle, the upper is made from supple leather, and a rubber outsole runs underfoot. But the Club C Revenge Plus strays from the typical all-white motif. Instead, it’s imagined in cream with hits of orange (or as Reebok likes to call it, Mars Dust) on the hang tag, logo, and vector—which, by the way, saw its prominence begin on the international stage of the ’96 Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

Nostalgia doesn’t have to come at the expense of comfort, though. These kicks have a plush foam tongue, molded sockliner, and cushioned midsole, making them an excellent wear-everywhere shoe. They might have stadium-worthy looks, but you can rock ’em traveling, on casual days at the office, and all weekend long. No need to wait ’till the Olympics kick off on July 24. This is an idyllic shoe to break out of your winter blues and style with your favorite jeans, joggers, or even a suit. Perhaps best of all, the premium look and feel of the shoe won’t cost you $ 100.

The Best (and Most Innovative) Razors for a Close, Safe Shave

Other offerings from the International Sports Heritage Collection include three printed track jackets and three sweatshirts in varying red, green, and blue hues. Come April, a second iteration of the collection will be unveiled. You can expect another Club C Revenge Plus shoe, a Classic Leather model, and more Olympics-inspired merchandise.

Watch of the Week: An ’80s Cult Classic Gets an Update

Big hair, loud pastel color combinations, step aerobics—there’s a lot about the ’80s that we’re happy to leave in the past. But there are also a few things we miss, and our latest Watch of the Week really satisfies our nostalgia. It’s the Seiko SNJ025, a revamped version of the company’s iconic 1982 Hybrid Diver’s Watch, which was the first dive watch to combine analog hands and a digital display on one dial. It was released this past fall, and we’re thrilled to see it make a comeback.

Watch of the Week: The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition Is a Legend Reborn

First, a little history. The Hybrid Diver’s Watch, also known as the H558, was released in 1982. According to Seiko, the H558 initially won praise when it was worn on multiple climbs up Mount Everest (an interesting claim to fame for a dive watch). But that was just the start. The timepiece really gained a cult following once Arnold Schwarzenegger started wearing it in movies like Predator, says Men’s Journal Senior Editor Sal Vaglica. Despite that notable celebrity endorsement, the H558 went out of production in the early 1990s.

Fast forward to Baselword last year, and the watch resurfaced, this time as the SNJ025. It has the unmistakeable look of the original (it still sports the analog and digital combination), but it has also been modernized for today’s wearer. The H558 used a quartz movement, but the new version is solar-powered, which means there are no batteries to replace. Seiko also added a few other improvements while still remaining true to the watch’s eye-catching design.

“It keeps a lot of the features of the original, like a chronograph and alarm, but adds in a calendar and dual time,” says Vaglica. “It’s also a bit bigger than the original, at 47.8mm, so it’s a good fit for larger wrists.”

Watches of the Week: The Luminox x Bear Grylls Collection Is Built to Keep You Alive in the Wild

In addition, the watch features a power reserve display function (Seiko claims it has a 6-month reserve when fully charged), a screw-down crown and two pushers, a one-way rotating bezel for tracking elapsed time, and LumiBrite-coated hands and indices for good low-light readability. Seiko has also released a sleek blacked-out version (the SNJ028), and collaborated with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors on a special-edition model with a red and blue bezel (the SNJ027).

No matter which version you go with, you’ll get a quality dive watch. Each one is rated for water resistance down to 660 feet, and they come with a comfortable, water-friendly silicone strap.

Today, the H558 is a collector’s item. If you’re not one of the lucky few who own an original, the SNJ025 is a great way to get that classic style with some extra functionality thrown in, too. We think Dutch Schaefer would approve.

Decoding all those ‘Stranger Things’ ’80s pop culture references

It’s 1985, and the only thing Hawkins, Indiana, has more of than bizarre supernatural/pseudo-scientific phenomena is a plethora of pop culture touchstones. One can be a major “Stranger Things” fan and either be too young to have any memories of the over-the-top decade in which Season 3 is set, or emerged from the Reagan Era with too-fuzzy recall, perhaps owing to when you didn’t “Just Say No.”

Where ’80s Music Meets Symbolist Painting: The Story Behind Miu Miu’s Surreal Soundtrack

Miu Miu Spring 2016 RTW

Trying to get to the bottom of a Miu Miu collection is like trying to solve a rebus, and this season’s sheer, suited, and glittering showing could be Mrs. Prada’s opus of uncrackable code—though that just might be her intention. Backstage she spoke of irrationality as a keyword to unlocking her collection, a word that also inspired DJ Frédéric Sanchez to create the gloomy-yet-thumping soundtrack that accompanied the Miu Miu models as they strode through the set’s arches.

Sanchez’s soundtrack centered on Killing Joke’s seminal ’80s track “Love Like Blood,” which came in remixes alongside the original and was paired against German electronic music and punk songs from the late ’80s and early ’90s. The auditory mix was as much of a lesson in contrasts as Mrs. Prada’s clothing, a little sweet and a little sadistic, all rolled into a fantastical mélange.

The jumping-off point for the Parisian creative was the set, made of silver and gold undulating archways. “When I saw the set, there was something very medieval about this architecture. I started thinking about things like The Devils by Ken Russell and this idea of how to do medieval things in a kind of fantastical way and in a dark, science fiction sort of way,” Sanchez explained over the phone.

That led him to the late ’80s and its moody music with a surreal edge. “There was a certain moment in the ’80s where you have the Batcave moment and bands like Bauhaus and Killing Joke alongside this kind of poetry and romanticism that you find in youth culture and Symbolism,” Sanchez notes, adding Symbolist artists like Fernand Khnopff and Jean Delville to his list of references alongside ska and rudeboy culture.

Should that barrage of cross-cultural sources feel slightly overwhelming, Sanchez is happy to break down the parallels he was exploring: “It’s the romanticism of youth. I remember when I was 14 or 15, I was listening to bands like Joy Division and the Cure, but at the same time I was reading Lautréamont,” he noted, citing this intersection of the dark and the beautiful as a place of particular interest. If that sounds like something you might only find in a dream, well, maybe that’s the point. “The soundtrack is not really about what the Miu Miu girl would be listening to, it’s more something mental, what’s in her head, what she’s thinking at this moment.”

Take a listen to Killing Joy’s “Love Like Blood” below while you click through Miu Miu’s Spring collection and put yourself in a Miu Miu headspace. It’s not a bad place to be.

Are You Ready for the Return of This OTT ’80s Trend?

jw anderson trends

There was a hint of Victoriana in laced governess-meets-glam booties at Marc Jacobs’s epic show on Thursday. And then just today, in London, J.W.Anderson showed exaggerated leg-of-mutton sleeves, popular in the reign of Queen Victoria. Do we smell a trend? Maybe, but let’s not be so quick to set the needle quite so far back; there were clues in the new collection that suggest Jonathan Anderson’s references weren’t quite so dusty.

We know from his impactful Fall collection for Loewe that Anderson has been applying a 1980s filter to his designs, which would explain the squiggle print he showed at his signature line today. This eye-catching pattern paid homage to one Vivienne Westwood showed at her 1981 pirate collection. It was also a nod to the work of graffiti artist Keith Haring, who later collaborated with her. This print was to New Romantics what the flannel shirt was to Grunge rockers: There are pictures of Duran Duran wearing it, as well as Bow Wow Wow’s Annabella Lwin.

The New Romantics rejected punk’s hard, agro edge in favor of a frilly and androgynous look. (“Often we’d find women’s clothes,” said Nick Rhodes in a recent interview, “because actually men’s clothes weren’t particularly flamboyant at that time.”) There is no doubt that Anderson’s collection, featuring bralettes worn over shirts, was super femme. It was also boldly exuberant, as any love letter to a decade in which bigger really was better should be.

Don Cheadle And Jimmy Fallon Just Became An ’80s R&B Group

Well, this is totally awesome.

While reminiscing about the history of “The Tonight Show” studio on Friday, Jimmy Fallon and Don Cheadle began talking about R&B group Pleather & Jerry from the ’80s show “American Power Hour.” If that doesn’t seem to ring a bell for you, it’s probably because Pleather and Jerry are really just Fallon and Cheadle dressing up in ’80s clothes and singing about ladies and various fast food restaurant bathrooms.

Cheadle is up for a Golden Globe this weekend for his work in “House of Lies,” but after this someone should probably give him a Grammy as well.

Ultimate Proof That The Best Tourists Are ’80s Tourists

We’re not exactly sure when tourists started getting such a bad rap. We’re referring, specifically, to their sartorial choices. Ain’t nothing wrong with high waisted shorts, tourist attraction tees, clunky binoculars and that high SPF glow, right?

In fact, the only thing that could possibly up the fashion game of the United States’ tourist population are neon, spandex and the overall predilection for tackiness that came along with the 1980s. Photographer Roger Minick captured the glorious visual event that occurred when tourists were caught in the wild, compiling his photographic findings into a stunning series called “Sightseers.”

twins

While Minick’s photos are certainly entertaining, they also capture the fundamentally strange habits of tourists, pushing each other out of the way to snap the same photographs of the same places.

“I vividly remember how all the photography students would gather at the famous Inspiration Point overlook, get into position with their cameras mounted to tripods, and wait for the grand man himself to move along the line bestowing his blessings on each student’s composition and choice of exposure,” Minick explains in his field notes. “It wasn’t long, however, before I became aware of something else going on at the overlook: waves of tourists were continually arriving at the overlook’s parking lot in cars, buses and motorhomes, thrusting their way through this gauntlet of photographers not only for a clear view of the famous vista but also for the obligatory snapshot of themselves proving they were there.”

The tourist phenomenon of the ’80s has almost engulfed our entire contemporary existence thanks to Instagram and other such contemporary additions. Now the need to prove we exist, and capture it in film, dominates many a morning brunch and trip to the museum. It’s interesting to see the roots of our obsession with visual documentation at these American landmarks.

You may, like us, have an aesthetic soft spot for the beauty of suburban life. If so, you’ll rank the following photographs with the highest tiers of photographic artwork. Seeing country’s greatest natural wonders, from the Grand Canyon to Bryce Canyon, juxtaposed with the kitsch overload that was ’80s fashion, is truly a sight to behold. At the very least, it’s a retro throwback that will force a few smiles. See what happens when the camera is turned on the tourists for once in the photos below. Be warned, you’re about to experience some serious fanny pack envy.
