The Best Face Masks for Cleansing, Exfoliating, Hydrating, and More

Today’s face masks for your skin can help deep-clean the gunk out of your pores, remove dark spots or fine lines, dissolve dead skin cells and prevent acne, or thoroughly nourish the layers of your skin. But where do you fit them into your regular grooming routine? Try to Incorporate them into your weekly regimens in order to put your best face forward—even if it’s hiding behind a physical mask half the time. In the very least, it’s an investment in your skin’s health, and a big step towards building an effective, long-term anti-aging plan. Here are some of the best kinds of face masks in a variety of categories, as well as how they should fit into your regimen. We’ve picked our favorite product in each category, too.

Best Moisturizing Sheet Mask: HETIME Revitalizing and Hydrating Sheet Mask (Pack of 4)

Sheet masks are typically used for deep nourishment, and are most often lathered in serum. That serum seeps into all three layers of your skin, pumping and plumping it full of vitamins and nutrients that work to hydrate and restore. Sheet masks are best done before bed, since you can magnify their benefits by syncing the serum absorption with your body’s regenerative sleep cycle. Best of all, after peeling the mask away upon completion, you can collect the excess serum from the sheet and massage it into your hands, neck, and any dry patches of skin. Assuming you follow an already baseline skincare regimen (with twice-daily cleansing and moisturizing), then a once-weekly rotation of these sheet masks will work wonders on your skin without being wasteful. You can also deploy them ad hoc for moments of deep hydration despair.

Best Exfoliating Mask: Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

Exfoliating masks are often presented as enzyme masks or peels. In essence, they dissolve dead skin cells and resurface the skin, which is to say that they allow the healthiest, brightest skin cells to present themselves, and ensure that they enjoy as much time at the surface of your skin before being replaced by new cells, as opposed to the dead skin cells that leave skin looking dull, on top of clogging pores and causing breakouts. By exfoliating your skin once a week with an exfoliating mask, rather than a physical scrub, you will take the shortest and healthiest route towards reducing dark spots, fine lines, rough patches of skin, and more. Follow each brand’s instructions closely, however, because many exfoliating and resurfacing formulas need to be flushed away after 5-10 minutes. It’s best to do them once a week before bed, followed by a nourishing night mask of some sort, to help everything recover before you wake up.

[$ 60; dermstore.com]

Best Overnight Repair Mask: Madeca Derma Revitalizing Cream

Similar to a serum-packed sheet mask, an overnight repair mask also delivers tons of nourishment to your skin cells. They’re typically dense creams or balms, and they sit atop the skin to help firm, hydrate, and restore it while you sleep. Look for healing, restorative ingredients in order to find a great overnight product. You can use them daily, or as needed, depending on the severity of your skin’s needs.

Best Deep-Cleansing Mask: Maapilim Facial Mud Mask

You probably know this mask well: It’s the kind you spread on your face like peanut butter (though it’s usually a charcoal or mud/clay formula that cooperates much better than PB). The ingredients in these cleansing masks suck out all the excess grime, sebum, and toxins in your pores, as they tighten and dry on your skin. Typically, after 15-20 minutes, they’ve done their deed and you can rinse them away before applying hydrating and nourishing products like serums and moisturizers. (Or masks with those same functions.) Do a cleansing mask once a week after your evening face wash, and follow directions closely. Anything more than that is unnecessary and may dry out the skin, thus causing more damage than good. Used sparingly, these cleansing masks are huge movers when it comes to clear skin. They also work as terrific spot-healers, whenever you have a deep-seated pimple that needs drying out.

[$ 38; maapilim.com]

Best Peel-Off Mask: Golden Door Gold Peel-A-Way Masque

Peel-off masks can both exfoliate and cleanse the skin. They tighten to your face much like a cleansing mask, but they can be peeled away in one fell swoop. The best ones often have ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids to dissolve dead surface cells, as well as hydrating and defensive ingredients that keep skin both looking healthy and shield it against pollution. They’re best used once a week, but shouldn’t be used alongside an exfoliating peel or enzyme mask. You may use them in tandem with a weekly cleansing mask, but it’s best to spread them out a few days apart. Do peel-off masks before bed, after cleansing, and before a nourishing product that stimulates repair and restoration.

[$ 68; goldendoor.com]

Best Leave-On Winter Mask: MUDMASKY Winter Mask

A leave-on daytime mask is more or less a nutrient-dense moisturizer. They can often be used as night-time moisturizers/masks as well, but are especially great to use when the temperature drops. That’s because they proactively shield you from the cold, dry winter air, and preserve the skin’s hydration levels on the most trying of days. You can use them either daily or at night, any time of year. Winter masks do that best of all, especially when you need them most.

Best Sunscreens to Try This Summer

Your sunscreen search needs a few filters. First, try using only broad-spectrum options since they block both types of cancerous, cell-mutating ultraviolet (UV) rays. Then, consider your lifestyle and preferred outdoor activities—because dads and climbers have different needs than beach bums and outdoorsmen. To help narrow the field, here are six sunscreens that cover these spectrums.

What’s the SPF sweet spot?

Anywhere between 30 and 50. Above 30, the level of SPF doesn’t increase exponentially. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. SPF 15 blocks 93 percent of rays, SPF 30 blocks 97 percent, SPF 50 blocks 98 percent, and SPF 100 blocks 99 percent.

Sunscreens-Chris-Wellhausen_06
Chris Wellhausen

Coola SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen

The summer sun can incite dread in some people—namely those whose fair skin burns instantly. A mineral SPF 50 sunscreen is the solution, since it blocks 98 percent of UV rays, while a pasty SPF 100 only ups the ante to 99-percent protection. COOLA’s formula is water resistant for 80 minutes, reef friendly, engineered for sensitive skin, and uses a mineral mix of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to block UV rays.

Salt + Stone SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen

For guys who tan easily or who have mid-tone skin, SPF 30 is the bare minimum. Even though it offers slightly less defense against the sun’s rays (97 percent blocked versus 98 percent for SPF 50), this level of protection will still allow for effective tanning at a safe rate. Salt & Stone’s SPF 30 lotion delivers a chemical- and residue-free application that also nourishes skin with aloe, jojoba oil, Vitamin E, and more.

EltaMD SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen

There’s a myth that darker skin tones need no sunscreen, since they don’t burn so easily. But without any SPF protection, the sun’s cancer-causing and skin-aging UV rays will still seep into the skin. EltaMD’s full-body SPF 50 is the singular best mineral defense and doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin. Plus, the chemical-free formula is water resistant for 80 minutes.

Art of Sport SPF 50 Sunscreen

Art of Sport’s entire skincare assortment is engineered for athletes, and this SPF 50 lotion gives coverage to the heavy sweaters and surfers alike. It has high-grade water resistance up to 80 minutes—and that includes sweat resistance, too, for the runners, golfers, tennis players, and more. It wears light and prevents sweat from drying on the skin. This in turn thwarts painful sweat burns, a phenomenon that outdoor athletes know well.

Jack Black Oil-Free SPF 45 Sunscreen

If you need to pack one full-body sunscreen for repeat applications and thorough coverage, make it Jack Black’s. The lightweight, oil-free, non-greasy formula won’t leave you sweating, plus it uses zinc oxide to help deliver a nearly 98-percent sun shield. It provides 80 minutes of water and sweat resistance, and even nourishes skin with antioxidant-rich Vitamin C and soothing calendula. With it, the sun will complement your getaway, not compromise it.

Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen

Skiers, hikers, and residents of Denver know best: High altitudes yield the worst burns. So it’s worth getting a sunblock specifically for the face, since it has the most sensitive skin. The aloe- and Vitamin E-enriched mineral sunblock is the strongest and most soothing counter to sky-high rays, plus it goes on clear and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Families love it, too, since kids also have sensitive skin—lather it on, every two hours.

Best Beard Trimmers for Men in 2020

What do you and your razor have in common? Neither of you has seen the light of day in months. At first, growing out a beard can feel like a pleasant escape—not unlike, say, working from home. But as the days add up, you don’t look or feel your best—even if you follow the best beard-growing practices to the letter. You realize this isn’t a vacation: It’s going to take some work. Enter the best beard trimmers for men.

Before you start hacking, understand two things. First, facial hair grows at difference speeds, says JayR Mallari, a barber at Legacy Barber Studio in Walnut Creek, CA. “Typically, mustache and chin hair grow faster than cheek hair,” he says, “so you might need to trim more in those areas to get an even beard length.”

Second, the line between sophisticated and Sasquatch runs right through your Adam’s apple. “Go right through the middle of it,” Mallari says. “That’s the perfect spot for your neckline.”

Whether you’re rocking a full quarantine beard, a sporty new mustache, or a simple sprinkling of stubble, all facial hair needs regular tending with the right tools.

Here are 15 professional beard trimmers will help tame your face and spruce up your look.

Best Everyday Beard Trimmer: Wahl 5 Star Cordless Magic Clipper

Wahl Cordless Magic Clip

The updated cordless version with eight attachments combines old-school reliability with modern ease.

Best Face Wipes for a Breakout-Free Summer

Whether you’re sweating after your outdoor workout or wrapping up a grueling hike but aren’t close to home, it’s never a bad idea to have a few face wipes ready to go in your pack or pocket. Here are some of our favorite face wipes to consider adding to your on-the-go grooming routine this summer. They more or less cover every base on their own, but we’ve targeted specific situations where each one excels best.

Best for Outdoor Athletes: Art of Sport Face and Body Wipes

These soothing, aloe-packed wipes are your post-workout reboot, especially if you can’t shower within the first minutes of finishing. They’ll wipe sweat, dirt, and grime from the face, and can then be used to wipe down anything else, like the droplets trickling down your arms or backside. They calm the skin, too, after a sunny workout, and they cool it with tingling mint so you know it’s working. Pack it in your gym bag, too, to unclog pores after a pump and before you get home to rinse off.

Like a cup of coffee to get you through the latter half of the day, these cooling wipes also have gentle “crystals” on the surface that help buff away dead skin as they unclog pores. They’re loaded with caffeine for this same purpose, to boost circulation in the face, as if you just took a cool, refreshing dip in the pool. You’ll have to work for the weekend for the real deal, but these things should tide you over till then—and till 6 p.m. each weekday.

Each wipe contains that tonic, which dissolves dead skin and unclogs pores, while removing grime, hydrating the skin, and toning it. It’s a full skincare regimen, and it’s perfect for the grooming lover who moonlights as a hiker or camper.

If either sounds like you, then Cetaphil’s gentle cleansing cloths will flush away the bad stuff without any disruption.

These cloths have both of those ingredients, along with sage, bergamot, and eucalyptus to cool and wake up your skin.

Best Men’s Hair Products to Try This Summer

If you haven’t buzzed your hair off this summer, then you’re probably looking for the best lightweight hair styling creams, sprays, and more for your new cut. The best men’s hair products won’t melt down onto your face, but they should let you still run your fingers through your ‘do. The group below offers a range of results depending on your hair type and needs. We picked a favorite in each field, from styling cream to pomade and dry shampoo, to make the purchase as easy as can be this summer.

The Easy Haircut to Try at Home (That’s Not a Buzz Cut)

Best for Light Hold and Taming Strays: Styling Cream

Cream is the quintessential lightweight styler, in that it has a barely-there feel but still helps you style your hair. It allows you to comb or coach your hair into whichever resting place you prefer, or to define curls and natural texture. And, while it’ll still blow in the wind, cream is cooperative and allows the hair to settle back into place. It’s also good for a light dusting over strays. It can even double as a beard tamer. Church California’s is packed with sea- and land-sourced plants, which nourish the hair while maintaining effortless, lightweight control.

Try: Church California cream pomade (pictured above) [$ 30; churchcalifornia.com]

Best for Touchable Texture: Salt Spray

Salt spray replicates the “surfer” texture you get after a swim in the ocean. (You know the feeling, where your hair is perfect and effortless no matter which way it settles.) Salt spray is terrific for light hold on its own, or as a last-step finishing touch following a cream. It can deliver choppy waves to short styles, or definition to curls and longer lengths. The best ones, like Fellow Barber’s, also nourish hair with ingredients like algae, which is rich in minerals.

Try: Fellow Barber mineral spray [$ 28; fellowbarber.com]

Best for Curl Hydration and Definition: Leave-in Conditioner

Guys with naturally curly hair will often rely on balms to preserve hydration levels and maintain control over their style. A lighter option is a leave-in conditioner. It borders on being a hair cream, but it’s ultra lightweight and its key purpose is the nourishing and hydrating that helps curls look their best. Longer styles may demand a little balm to follow, but a nutrient-dense leave-in conditioner like Scotch Porter’s will handle the brunt of the taming. It also strengthens hair and works well as an overnight conditioner, for especially dry or damaged hair.

Try: Scotch Porter leave-in hair conditioner [$ 12; scotchporter.com]

Best for High Hold and Texturized Volume: Dry Shampoo Wax

If what you want is high volume, choppy texture, and a matte finish, there is really just one summer-ready product that fits this bill: Hanz de Fuko’s innovative Quicksand. It’s a curious combination of gritty granules (diatomaceous earth) and hair wax, and it soaks up excess oil at the base of each hair shaft, while also delivering unparalleled texture and volume. Unlike other waxes, it wears lighter, and works well with styles between 1-3 inches. It’s especially great for that second or third day between shampoos, when the hair is lifeless and needs some bounce, but you aren’t ready to fully wash the strands just yet.

Try: Hanz de Fuko ‘Quicksand’ dry shampoo + styling wax [$ 23; amazon.com]

oribe

Best for a Medium Hold Style: Hair Paste

Hair paste is perhaps the most utilitarian product you can own. While it works best applied to towel-dried hair (to provide medium hold and light shine), it also works well for touch-ups and quick, glossy texture upon dry application. However, if you want to style your hair in any specific direction or straighten out some curls, simply comb it through damp hair and let it dry. Then, as it does, break it apart with your fingers to create texture and definition, or dismantle it entirely (without disrupting the direction you combed it) for a medium hold at the roots, while the strands themselves flow a bit more freely. You can blow dry it to maximize the hold, for a buttoned-up look that isn’t as polished as pomade. Oribe’s paste is ahead of the pack, and allows you to re-work the style throughout the day, with a splash of water and your fingertips (or a comb). You’ll be able to run your hands through the finished look, without compromising your intended result.

Try: Oribe molding paste [$ 39; nordstrom.com]

blumaan
Courtesy image

Best for Definition and Some Shine: Hair Oil

If you want to add shine to any other product, or if you just need a nourishing and frizz-fighting coat over each strand, then hair oil is your pick. Simply apply a few drops of oil to your palms and distribute evenly. Most of them use one or many oils that also neutralize the scalp and prevent bacteria, while delivering hair-strengthening nourishment to the hairs and follicles. And worry not, because they won’t give you an oily finish, so long as you only use a couple drops (or 3-4 in longer styles). You can even mix the oil into your paste or cream if you want to add a pinch of shine and light-catching definition. BluMaan’s vial is great in that it’s twice the size of most options, and it combines oils of sesame, sunflower, coconut, and olive to tame hair and restore or preserve healthy hydration levels.

Try: BluMaan hair oil [$ 24; amazon.com]

1. Raen Wiley

Square sunglasses provide strong, clean lines that perfectly suit round and oval face shapes, balancing out the proportions. 2. Illesteva Patmos Sunglasses

A modern take on the aviator frame, these Italian-made shades are inspired by the Greek island of Patmos. Opt between 24K gold or metal frames—we like the former to mimic the way light shimmers off water at sunset. The slightly hexagonal shape and tortoise temple tips add another dimension of elegance.

3. Warby Fletcher Griffin

You can’t beat the price and convenience of Warby Parker, especially with their option to try multiple frames at home for free before you buy online. The Griffin is available in multiple widths and lens types (prescription, progressives, readers, and single vision), as well as two glossy acetate frames. We’re partial to the Pacific Crystal (shown above) for an understated pop of color that’s neutral enough to match virtually any outfit. The slightly arched brow of the frames soften the boxiness of their shape to boot.

The timeless tortoise colorway, green lenses, and plaques on the front and temples add durability.

A major trend of summer 2020, aside from acetate frames, is standout brows and unique nose bridges (specifically a lack thereof). Best Men’s Sweatpants for Working Out, Relaxing, and More

Sweatpants have been enjoying some well deserved time in the spotlight in recent years. Although they started out as basic workout apparel, clothing retailers and designers have expanded the category significantly, and now guys have lots of options to choose from. The best men’s sweatpants can work in all kinds of situations, whether you’re gearing up for an abs workout or just looking for something comfortable to get you through the day.

The Top 10 Sweat Shorts for Men

How to Pick the Best Sweatpants

In this guide, you’ll find some of the best Nike Dri-Fit sweatpants, the best Adidas sweatpants, and top pairs from other brands as well.

No matter how you like to style your sweats, these are the best men’s sweatpants, track pants, and more to know about right now.

Best Men’s Slim-Fit T-Shirts for Summer and Beyond

When it comes to your wardrobe, there’s nothing more classic than a T-shirt. But ask any stylist and they’ll agree: The humble tee is the foundation for effortless style. While there are no shortage of options available, it’s a good idea to focus your search around slim-fit T-shirts—they’ll deliver the most flattering shape and they work well in a variety of outfits.

10 Best T-Shirts for a Muscular Body

“A slimmer-fit shirt makes your body look better, plain and simple,” says image consultant and personal stylist Patrick Kenger.

How to Choose the Best Slim-Fit T-Shirt

Wondering what to look for? Opt for 100-percent cotton tees, which are generally soft, comfortable, and breathable. The sleeves should lightly hug your arms and hit at mid-bicep, and the hem should fall around your pockets, Kenger says. It’s also important to load up on neutrals (white, gray, and navy blue). That way, you can wear your shirts in many different outfits—from layering them under a bomber jacket to pairing them with a suit and sneakers.

Below, you’ll find top options from brands like Uniqlo, Todd Snyder, and more, all across a range of price points and styles. Grab your favorites, and you’ll have your summer style solved.

Here are a few of the best men’s slim-fit tees to consider.

Uniqlo U Crew Neck Short-Sleeve T-Shirt

Uniqlo shirts come highly recommended by Patrick Kenger, and their affordable price point makes them a great option if you’re looking to stock up on tees. Although not advertised as slim fit, they have a trim shape, and the durable cotton fabric and many colors of the U Collection T-shirts make them a long-lasting and versatile addition to your closet.

Bonobos Soft Everyday Tee

A favorite of Los Angeles-based stylist Lisa Cameron, this Bonobos tee is made from 100-percent cotton for a soft, comfortable feel. Plus, it’s available as a V-neck or crew neck, in standard or short lengths, and with or without a front pocket, so you can order it exactly how you like.

J. Crew Slim Broken-In Pocket Crewneck T-Shirt

First introduced in 2004, the Broken-In T-Shirt has been in the J. Crew lineup for a long time, and it’s still a perennial favorite. It’s dyed twice and washed for exceptional softness and a slightly faded color, which gives the shirt a unique vintage look.

Mack Weldon Silver V-Neck T-Shirt

Hate doing laundry? This one’s for you. This slim-fit v-neck (it’s also available in a crew neck version) is made from a blend of premium Supima cotton and Silver XT2 antimicrobial fabric, so it’ll stay fresh through days of repeated wear.

Buck Mason Costa Tee

The Costa Tee is constructed from Supima cotton for low weight and excellent breathability, both essential features for summer wear. It also features a curved hem that helps create a slimming silhouette and tucks in easily.

Todd Snyder Champion Basic Jersey Tee

A new item from Todd Snyder, this tee is a collaboration with the legendary sportswear brand Champion. It uses a comfortable cotton jersey fabric and is available in many different colors, but there’s even more to like if you look closely: details like the vintage Champion logo on the sleeve and contrast stitching along the hem and neck.

Orlebar Brown OB-T Slim-Fit Cotton-Jersey T-Shirt

One of Orlebar Brown’s most popular items, this all-cotton shirt combines a slim fit through the torso with a wide collar for a tailored look that still feels breezy and relaxed. It’s perfect for summer.

Softwear Men’s T-Shirt

This shirt from Softwear opts for a modal/spandex blend. In other words: It’s soft as hell. The fabric has excellent resistance against pilling and color fading, so this shirt will continue looking great no matter how many times you wear it. Bonus: It’s great as a stylish workout shirt.

[$ 42; wearsoftwear.com]

Alex Mill Slim-Fit Slub Cotton-Jersey T-Shirt

Because of the way it’s manufactured, slub cotton has many tiny lumps, and they create a subtle texture that feels light and soft against the skin. When dyed, the fabric also develops a slightly heathered look that works great with washed-out pastel colorways, like these shirts have.

The Best Supergoop Suncare Products for Men

Suncare should be a given, but most of us aren’t priming our mugs with sunscreen every day or dutifully spraying our bodies with SPF before a run through the neighborhood. It’s not self-righteousness (at least not entirely). Most people know they aren’t impervious to skin cancer. (The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates 1 in 5 Americans will develop it by the age of 70.) A lot of our sunscreen usage has to do with ease of use. We’re way more apt to use products on the reg that are a breeze to apply; don’t leave a film on your skin that’s begging to be sweat off; and lend themselves to a daily grooming regimen. Supergoop is one such company that’s gained traction in the suncare space for its bevy of smarter SPF products. They offer sprays, sticks, lotions, and balms for your face, scalp, and body—beyond the one-dimensional offering you grew up with.

The Best Colognes for Men

We tried a sampling of suncare products from Supergoop, all of which have gotten an ocean-friendly makeover. They’re free of the chemical octinoxate to keep our reefs safe. Here’s what you should stock up on for summer and beyond.

Find It First: 15 Beaches That Are Totally Off the Radar, For Now

PLAY Antioxidant Body Mist SPF 50 with Vitamin C

You wouldn’t think a nozzle would make such an impact, but when you’re trying to sufficiently cover your back or spray a squirming child, it does. The valve on Supergoop’s body mists ensures a wide surface area and lets you spray from all directions, including upside down, to get hard-to-reach spots. The formula has added vitamin C to nourish the skin, but we especially love that the broad-spectrum coverage is water- and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes—plus you can apply to wet skin to ensure protection at the pool or beach. One nitpick: This doesn’t have a dry finish, which we prefer for active pursuits.

[$ 21; supergoop.com]

PLAY Lip Balm SPF 30 with Mint

Chapstick might be your top grooming product in the winter, but come summer most men neglect their lips—which is a big mistake. The skin is sensitive and easy to burn, so a balm with SPF 30 is just the ticket for days on the water. Supergoop employs shea butter to nourish lips without leaving a tacky or glossy residue. Because of the tube’s design, you don’t have to stash it in your cooler, say, at the beach to keep it from melting all over your mouth when you apply—but like to. The added coolness and mint is a nice pick-me-up when it’s hotter than hell.

City Sunscreen Serum

If you’re the kind of guy who can’t be bothered with an intensive skin regimen, at least use Supergoop’s City Sunscreen Serum in the morning. As minimalist as grooming gets, this serum does double duty as a lightweight lotion. The formula is bolstered by vitamin E and B5 and melts into your skin without a chalky tint. Your cells gets to drink in hydration, while fighting photoaging (read sun spots and wrinkles) with broad spectrum SPF 30.

Your hands are always subject to intense sun exposure for two reasons: they’re almost never covered by UV-blocking clothing and most people wash their hands after applying sunscreen, ridding most traces of SPF. Supergoop has come up with a nifty workaround: a fast-absorbing hand cream that moisturizes while it protects (SPF 40). Keep it on your bathroom sink as a reminder to use before you walk out the door.

Unseen Sunscreen

If you’re looking for a facial sunscreen you’ll actually want to use every day that comes in a totable package, meet Unscreen Sunscreen. True to its name, the formula has a satiny finish that really glides onto your skin. Unlike zinc-based sunscreen, you won’t spend 10 minutes rubbing it into your beard either. Bottom line: You’ll be hard pressed to find another sunscreen you love more. The only downside is the size of the tube.

The Best Colognes for Men

First things first: The best colognes for men may go by a different name. “Cologne,” after all, is just one classification of fragrances, and it has nothing to do with gender. That’s why it’s good to look far past that term when shopping for colognes (or perfumes, or fragrances, or scents) online.

The 10 Most Irresistible Colognes, According to Real Women

What You Should Consider Before Buying Cologne Online

“The biggest hurdle for online scent shopping is buying a new scent before smelling it,” says Clayton Ilolahia, who splits time and expertise between Fragrances of the World (where they classify scents) and What Men Should Smell Like (where he reviews fragrances and reports on the industry). “To play it safe, have an idea of what notes or ingredients you like and dislike.” Ilolahia also says to check the retailers’ online returns policy before you buy. “Some will provide a sample or scented card with the purchase to try first before opening the product, allowing for returns or exchanges.”

How to Pick the Best Cologne

To better understand what you want in a fragrance, Ilolahia says to think about the ones you have worn in the past, or the ones you have noted liking (whether your friends, colleagues, or family members wear scents that have left positive impressions). “Look at the fragrance families these scents belong to, or their notes,” he says. “Is there a common theme like woods or citrus? If there is, do you want to stay within that theme or is it time to try something different?”

Sometimes these notes can play to seasonality, too, like how woody, smoky, or spicy notes often warm the senses in fall or winter, while citrus, aquatic, and floral notes play strong in spring or summer. But, of course, don’t overthink it too much: If you like a scent, it doesn’t matter what season it is.

Finally, consider when and where you’ll be sporting the scent. Is it going to take you from the office and into a future happy hour or for a date once it’s safe to do so again? Or is it for a specific special occasion? Perhaps you prefer a more alluring scent for date night, but a brighter and relaxed option during the day or at an office. For the latter, Ililahia prefers more intense notes like sandalwood, amber, leather, or exotic spices. But if you stick with one cologne for all occasions—a signature scent—you might want a fragrance that meets in the middle.

But how do you know when you’ve found the best cologne for you? “You’ll know your signature scent when you smell it,” Ilolahia says. “It’s a bit like love: Pick the one that attracts the most compliments. You, and the people around you, should enjoy the scent.”

What’s the Difference Between Cologne and Perfume? And What Do Labels Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Parfum Mean?

When you see “Eau de Cologne,” “Eau de Toilette,” or “Eau de Parfum” written on the bottles, it’s important to pay attention: This labeling refers to the scent’s intensity (that is, the concentration of fragrant oils used in the blend). It increases in that order— EdC, EdT, EdP. Chances are you’ll only want to shop for EdT (which uses 5-15% perfume oil concentrations) and EdP (which uses 15-20%). EdCs only use 2-5% so they won’t last as long. Above EdP is “Parfum” itself, with 20-30% concentrations—probably too intense for most. But a fragrance’s cost is often determined by this concentration, which also determines how long lasting and pronounced it is. In other words, EdPs are often going to be more expensive than EdTs because they use more oil.

With the above in mind, we’ve picked 10 of our favorite colognes right now. Some of the scents work all season long, while others are candidates for your next (or first) signature scent. Whichever one you finally choose, remember that a little usually goes a long way.

Bulgari Man

Best for: Signature Scent

What It Smells Like: Vetiver, cashmere wood, pear, and musk form a sweet woody harmony

Why We Like It: Bulgari is actively building out the “Man” family of fragrances for various moods and manners, but this “hero” cologne around which they orbit is a frontrunner for signature-scent status—especially if you’re frequently transitioning from work to evening plans without a change of clothes. You can wear it for all occasions and it should last you all day long without you needing to reapply.

Richard James Aqua Aromatica Blade of Grass

Best for: Spring/Summer

What It Smells Like: Vetiver, fig, green tea, and bergamot combine for the most summery scent imaginable. And as the name suggests, it truly smells like fresh-cut grass and it’s one of our favorite colognes to wear during warmer months.

Why We Like It: The standout among a quartet of outstanding “Aqua Aromatica” scents, Blade of Grass feels like poolside cocktails in the backyard—and a freshly mown yard at that. But don’t limit yourself to spring and summer; that evocation will suit cold, dreary days just as well.

Le Labo Bergamote 22

Best for: Signature Scent

What It Smells Like: Bergamot, petit grain, grapefruit, and musk provide a mind-clearing lift that friends and colleagues won’t be able to forget, mostly because they’re bound to ask you what you put on this morning.

Why We Like It: Few fragrances leave a nearly unanimous positive impression like Bergamote 22. It’s the true-fans favorite among Le Labo scents, while the masses otherwise flock to Santal 33. The brand nicknamed this one “Fire Cologne,” and it simply doesn’t disappoint.

Roja Parfums Scandal Pour Homme

Best for: Spring/Summer

What It Smells Like: Lemon, spearmint, lavender, and tonka bean have concocted the head-turning cologne of the season.

Why We Like It: Among Roja’s five-part cologne rollout in 2019, the violet-hued Scandal captures the most headlines thanks to its fresh but warming product.

Dior Homme

Best for: Signature Scent

What It Smells Like: Robert Pattinson, apparently. (Jokes aside, it offers up a combination of earthy and woody notes like cedar, vetiver, and patchouli.)

Why We Like It: We could smell this all day. This cedar-and-vetiver potion leaves a lasting impression, and it’s under-$ 100 price tag means it’s a solid option for a great-smelling cologne that won’t break the bank. Don’t be surprised if your friends and coworkers steal it for themselves.

Escentric Molecules Escentric 05

Best for: Spring/Summer

What It Smells Like: Cashmeran, pine resin, juniper, and bergamot bring the Mediterranean summer to, well, wherever you wear it.

Why We Like It: This cologne smartly turns down the citrus and marine overload, but balances a bergamot crispness with woody and spicy tones. This gives Escentric 05 a more grounded, sea-level, and coastal energy by comparison to its watery, breezy contemporaries. The bottom line: It smells damn good.

Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme

Best for: Signature Scent

What It Smells Like: Ginger, bergamot, pepper, and tonka bean come together in a cologne that’s worthy of an everday fragrance.

Why We Like It: Sometimes, your scent of choice should be up to your partner—since they’re the one on the receiving end of it, day in and out. We asked women to share which men’s colognes they like, and YSL’s cornerstone cologne led the list for its universality, but also its alluring aroma—perfect if you’re going for the “man of mystery” schtick.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity (Silver)

Best for: Spring/Summer

What It Smells Like: Juniper, nutmeg, amber, and coriander make for a top-shelf recipe in one of the industry’s most refreshing recent releases.

Why We Like It: The best gin and tonic of your life is undrinkable: Maison Francis Kurkdjian crafted it instead for the nose, in this dry, spicy scent. It’s the sharper, juniper-rich half of the Silver-Gold unisex duo that is “Gentle Fluidity” (with “Gold” skewing more vanilla); the pair of perfumes makes for a perfect His-Hers purchase.

Goldfield & Banks Pacific Moss Rocks

Best for: Spring/Summer

What It Smells Like: Moss, lemon, sage, and geranium just might transport you and everybody around you to coastal Australia as the sun beats down and the earth’s expanse beckons beyond the crashing tide.

Why We Like It: This cologne succeeds in bottling a place and moment—a careful but slippery walk through the rocky shores as salt water lightly splashes your skin. Put another way: It makes you smell pretty incredible.

Louis Vuitton L’Immensité

Best for: Signature Scent

What It Smells Like: The unfathomable scale of an open-seas sprawl is made humble and inviting, thanks to ginger, amber, lemon, and water notes.

Why We Like It: L’Immensité is, plain and simple, an appealing choice no matter which fragrance notes you prefer.

The Best Products Fix Your Red-Faced, Non-Stop-Sweating Post-Workout Woes

A basic shampoo-conditioner-bodywash combo will de-grime you but not much more. Post-workout, you want to feel like you’ve gotten a good sweat—not look it. If you need to look presentable after having really gotten after it, you’ll need additional top-to-tail help. Here are the products that’ll have you feeling and looking fresh faster.

7 Agonizing 2-minute Workouts That’ll Torch Every Muscle in Your Body

It’s common to continue sweating an hour or two post-workout, since body temps take a while to settle back to normal—including on the scalp. Duke Cannon News Anchor Quick Fix Dry Shampoo ($ 15) has tapioca starch to sop up oil and wheat protein to strengthen hair. Wash your face in 10 seconds using a textured Koa Balancing Toner ($ 22) pad, which exfoliates skin and helps kill bacteria that can lead to breakouts.

The Best Wet Shave Razors for Men with Sensitive Skin

Susanne Kaufmann After Shave Balm ($ 74) has witch hazel to calm redness and inflammation from shaving (especially if you’re using cheap, disposable razors), plus marigold extract for moisture. To avoid sweating through a shirt, fast-absorbing Lululemon Selfcare Speed Up Cool Down Body Lotion ($ 34) helps chill you down while hydrating skin. A dollop of Triumph & Disaster Ponsonby Pomade Little Puck ($ 12) keeps hairstyles in place, and flax oil balances out the scalp. Bravo Sierra Deodorant ($ 10) may be all-natural, but the woodsy-smelling stuff is strong, so you won’t need to reapply.

The Best Pullovers and Hoodies for Staying Warm, Dry, and Comfortable

People have been wearing pullovers and hoodies for a long time. The “hood” sewn onto a garment can be traced back to medieval times, with monks’ cowls. Known for living an ascetic life in solitary, monks are the original masters of social isolation. In times with much less pandemic pandemonium, hoodies and pullovers have been a comfort garment, whether you wear them at home or out on a chilly climbing belay, windy boat ride, or busy errand run.

With many nations on lockdown and others practicing severe social distancing, a good pullover/hoody is our go-to piece any time we leave the house—or simply need that extra level of comfort. These are some of the best pullovers to isolate in, and when we finally flatten that curve, these pieces will undoubtedly remain essentials in our adventure kits.

Juliana Bicycles’ Pro Rider Works the Coronavirus Frontlines

Warmth: Fohen Robson Hoody

This is one of the nicest hoodies we have ever worn. Made with a soft, yet durable Japanese face fabric treated with DWR, and stuffed with 800-fill responsibly sourced down, the Robson hoody is warm and cozy. It has laser-cut armpit venting which breathes well on hard hikes—more than any other down hoody we’ve worn. It is also easy to find yourself wearing it around the house.

Rain: Arc’teryx Alpha Pullover

This beautifully designed pullover by Arc’teryx is made with a 40D Gore-Tex and is a perfect lightweight, simple jacket to have on a spring-summer alpine objective. Its clean, sleek style keeps you dry in a downpour. We aren’t sure if we love wearing it inside while in isolation, but we do know that those medieval monks would surely have liked this jacket during a storm ‘back in the day’ at the monastery.

Wind: The North Face Fanorak

When an anorak turns into a fanny pack it becomes a Fanorak. This lightweight windbreaker is a nifty, packable piece for any adventure in warmer climes. Made with a wind-cutting, thin polyester ripstop, this is a great jacket for a mountain bike ride or a chill hike. Best of all, it has a kangaroo pocket, which is handy no matter where or what you are doing.

The R1 hoodie is a snug, cozy layer for any outdoor activity, but is also a comforting piece to wear around the house.

Carhartt WIP Nimbus Pullover

Carhartt WIP (Work In Progress) is the streetwear arm of Carhartt (think Carhartt Europe of yesteryear, Beastie Boys style). WIP makes Carhartt pieces with a twist and does cool collabs with brands like AWAKE. WIP’s Nimbus Pullover is a modern take on a classic pullover made with a Nylon Supplex. It’s more of a city jacket, but it’s durable and perfect for traveling.

NHL Star Henrik Lundqvist on His Best Style Advice and How He Trains

Playing in New York City for over a decade has given Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist plenty of time to develop his style. The Swedish-born NHL star has been named the “most stylish athlete” in sports as part of New York Fashion Week and has previously developed his own fashion line with Bread & Boxers, as well as a special edition watch with TAG Heuer.

At the Indy 500 With Driver Alexander Rossi and TAG Heuer’s New Limited-Edition Watches

Not bad for a guy who previously said that for a big part of his life, he had “no idea what I was doing” when it came to style and that he “made a lot of mistakes.”

“Over the years I learned that the best advice when it comes to style is simple: be true to yourself,” Lundqvist told Men’s Journal. “Year-by-year I tried new things and I learned from my style mistakes. I had some really bad outfits at the beginning—nothing worked together. You go through things and find out what you like and what works for you. Eventually, you get to: ‘This is me, this is who I am and how I want to dress.’ My best advice is to be yourself and try and stick to that.”

Henrik Lundqvist Sounds Off on His Favorite Guitar, Leather Jacket, and Cars

One thing Lundqvist has developed over the years as part of his style is a love of watches. Lundqvist has partnered and collaborated with TAG Heuer over the years, including when he helped design a special edition version of the Aquaracer Quartz watch.

“It’s hard to beat a TAG Heuer watch. As a brand itself, all they do is quality when it comes to timepieces and I’ve had a lot of fun working with the brand,” Lundqvist said. “Their mindset and motto at TAG Heuer is ‘don’t crack under pressure.’ That mindset, that’s what it really is for me and is such a big part of what I do.  Being a goalie, you’re the only guy back there. You can’t afford to make mistakes—and if you make mistakes, it’s going to cost you. So I really take that slogan to heart.”

How 27 NHL Players Train and Work Out to Get Gameday Ready

Courtesy of TAG Heuer

Lundqvist spoke with Men’s Journal about playing in New York for a decade, how he trains, and his favorite types of watches.

How did you develop your style?

It was never a goal of mine to be trendy or anything, a lot of times I like things that might be out of style. I don’t really care because I feel comfortable in it. And once you have that confidence in yourself about, you don’t even think about it. Sometimes it can take some time. But New York is a great place for that, you can try everything. No matter what you do, there’s going to be someone else dressed even wilder on the street [laughs]. I want to feel comfortable when I dress because when I’m uncomfortable, I don’t feel like me. So I dress how I feel and it’s great to use style as a way of representing myself and I try and stick to that. So once you figure that out, you can try to be consistent in your style.

What are some of the ways you train for the NHL season?

The last couple of years have been a lot more focused on my leg workouts. Core for me is also very important as a goalie. I try to keep my back and hips feeling the right way. I think also as we get older, the best way to maximize your strength is by making sure everything is in line and making sure you’re stretching, which helps prevent injuries. Sometimes those smaller moves make the big differences, by building those little muscles you keep everything else healthy. One of the other things I like to do is tennis during the summer. It’s a lot of quick movements and in a funny way, it’s a lot of the same movements as I do in hockey. I try to make working out fun when I can, and tennis is something that’s great for exercise and I like it as well. But overall for me, working out my core, back, and legs are essential.

Need for Speed: How NHL Star Michael Grabner Trains to Be the Fastest Man on Ice

What have you enjoyed about collaborating with TAG Heuer over the years and your partnership together?

It’s hard to beat a TAG Heuer watch. As a brand itself, all they do is quality when it comes to timepieces and I’ve had a lot of fun working with the brand. I remember one project with them we did over the summer, and I got together with someone back in Europe and we drove these amazing cars. And their mindset and motto at TAG Heuer is “don’t crack under pressure.” That mindset, that’s what it really is for me and is such a big part of what I do. Being a goalie—but also for artists, being athletic, or when you’re training—the biggest part is your mindset and how you deal with your emotions.

Being a goalie, you’re the only guy back there. You can’t afford to make mistakes—and if you make mistakes, it’s going to cost you. So I really take that slogan to heart. It’s been a lot of fun working with the brand for a few years now. I had the opportunity to design my own watch last year and it was exciting. TAG Heuer always means the best and they have a great group of people there that I’ve worked with.

TAG Heuer Released a Third Limited-Edition Monaco Watch for 50th Anniversary Collection. Here’s Everything You Need to Know

How has your training changed over the course of your career?

I guess as I’ve progressed in my career it’s more just figuring out what do you need and how do I get through it to keep myself at my best. When I was younger, I trained a certain way and as you get older, you have to tweak that a little bit. Maybe you work out a little less or with a bit less intensity, or you lower the weights when you need to. As you get older, you listen to your body more and I noticed over the years, like my back and hips needed more attention. Now, I need to be more focused on those areas to make sure they’re all where they need to be and stay healthy. I make sure I’m strengthening the areas around those and so over time, you learn what you need and give an extra focus on those areas.

You previously collaborated with TAG Heuer on a special edition of the Aquaracer Quartz watch. What was that experience like for you in helping design a model?

Obviously, they have the brains and the knowledge when it comes to making a watch. For me, it was great to be able to get some guidance from the experts and go back and forth about the designs. Getting to tell them what I like and don’t like. The final result was to have a watch that I would be proud of and excited about, and we came up with some great designs for it. It was a lot of fun to be part of the process and it was also fun to give a couple of watches to some of my friends as gifts and be the one who helped design it. And to be able to have my own number on it and have it made in collaboration together, it was special to me, especially as someone who loves watches.

Courtesy of TAG Heuer
Courtesy of TAG Heuer

If someone is looking to buy a watch for someone as a gift, what are some things they should consider and what picks do you suggest?

What’s great about watches as gifts is that there are so many different types and styles, so you really can think about how it fits the person. Getting a TAG Heuer as a gift is always a good option. It comes down to you knowing the style of that person and at least a little bit of how they dress, in case you want to get one that they’ll wear when they dress up. And you can also be personal if you want, and engrave something on the back. It’s a gift that somebody will probably have for a long time, so it’s one of my favorite types of gifts to give.

What kinds of watches do you look for when you’re picking a timepiece?

I like them dressy and clean. For me, the watch is always like that final thing I do when I get dressed in the morning. It’s the last touch on the outfit. You get ready and think about: ‘What am I wearing?’ Then you look at your options, and the watch is going to accent it. I also love music and love going to shows when I can and I’ll usually wear a leather jacket to them. So for that, you want maybe a bigger watch or something like that. The watch is usually the final touch on my outfit. My favorite ones are the TAG Heuer Carrera and the Aquaracer, which is why I was so excited to design a model of that set.

What have you enjoyed about living and playing in New York City for a decade?

It’s been an incredible ride for me and my family, having been here for 15 years. It flies right by. Being part of the city is a big piece of playing here. And being part of the Rangers, it is such a great organization and a truly first-class organization all the time. The way they are to the fans, it has been amazing. Being part of the community means a lot to me and I just love the city. The first few years you feel like a tourist and you’re playing a game for a living, and then slowly year-by-year your mentality starts to change. Sometimes when I go back to Sweden now, I forget that compared to New York, people aren’t always walking so fast and honking and all that [laughs]. But I love the city and I’m really grateful for all that I’ve experienced.

The Best Leather Sneakers for Spring Cost Less Than $100

The search for the perfect everyday sneaker is a complicated affair. In most cases, especially if we’re talking spring and summer, you want a low-top shoe that gives your ankle a bit of breathing room so your jeans, chinos, or suit pants don’t rest on top—or, god forbid, billow over. Unless you’re a whiz at mixing prints and colors, you want to err on the side of simplicity. That’s not to say you can’t play with texture and pops of color, but a great everyday shoe has versatility. Too many embellishments will raise eyebrows, especially if you’re trying to pull this off at the office, and beat-up workout shoes will impress precisely, uh, nobody. We found the verifiable unicorn of casual sneakers that transcends the boundries of streetwear: Say hello to the Court Sneaker by Everlane.

Watch of the Week: The Alpiner Quartz GMT Is the Perfect Sport Watch for Travelers

What It Is

This shoe, inspired by basketball shoes of yesteryear, is a followup to the brand’s first foray into footwear (Tread). Made in Thai Binh, Vietnam, with full-grain leather sourced from Saigon TanTec, a sustainable, eco-conscious tannery, The Court Sneaker is all about leaving a small carbon footprint and a big fashion statement. The sole comprises natural and recycled rubber that’s almost entirely free of virgin (newly made) plastic, and the lining is made from 100 percent recycled polyester. As for that carbon footprint we mentioned, Everlane partners with NativeEnergy to wholly offset the amount of total greenhouse gas emissions produced, lessening the shoe’s impact on the environment.

Why We Like It

This is a casual sneaker, but the magic is in its subtleties. There’s a leather triangle on the inner belly of the shoe, as well as the outer, that’s imagined in a slightly darker shade or contrasting pop of color—unless you go for the monochromatic white or black options. The heel patch mirrors this color play, and is reminiscent of Adidas’ Stan Smith, only instead of that signature Kelly green, you get dusty rose, cloud grey, mustard, or forest. The stitching and vertical notches running along the back of the sole all add visual intrigue sans logo or label. It’s a minimalist design but don’t call it basic. Wear ’em with a suit or with jeans and a tee; they’re a stalwart in a capsule wardrobe.

The Court Sneaker also checks all our boxes when it comes to comfort. Even though they’re leather, they don’t stifle your feet after a day of standing or walking. They fit true to size and are easy to spot clean (we also appreciate that the white colorways aren’t blindingly pristine, so you don’t have to be on high alert about dirt. Perhaps most appealing, it clocks in under $ 100.

The Right Way to Shave Your Neck, According to Barbers

Nitpick

So far, I have no critique—other than I now want to buy these in all seven colors.

The Best Basic Cotton T-Shirts for Men

We’re going to go out on a limb and bet your weekend uniform includes a lot of simple cotton T-shirts. Spot on, right? We get it. They’re easy, unfussy, and look great. But finding the perfect tee can actually be a complicated endeavor because of the sheer variety of what’s out there.

Keegan-Michael Key on ‘Subtle-izing’ His Style and Getting Comfortable in His Own Skin

We’ll tell you this much: You definitely want to try before you buy. There’s always a possibility tees (yes, even cotton T-shirts) can be stiff and uncomfortable—or on the other end of the spectrum, can shrink in the dryer and become a wear-once-and-toss situation.

Andy Samberg Has the Perfect Spring Haircut. Here’s How to Get It

Luckily, there are companies out there wholly devoted to crafting the right tee for you, designing a range of necklines like crew and V-cut; different fits, from slim to oversized; and colorways galore, whether you like classic white or an unexpected pop of color. And if we’re talking trends, the ’90s are back, folks. So don’t be surprised if you catch some throwbacks (tie-dye!) in our 10 picks below.

Here are the best cotton T-shirts, from Madewell to Acne, to stock up on.

2020 Spring Fashion That Looks Damn Good Everywhere

1. Madewell Garment-Dyed Allday Crewneck Pocket Tee

Certainly not oversized, but not rib-huggingly tight either, the Goldilocks fit of this Madewell tee is superb. The sleeves land about midway on the biceps, and the crewneck continues the classic look. It’s made of ringspun cotton, so you’ll get some extra durability along with softness, unlike shirts made from standard raw cotton.

[$ 29.50; madewell.com]

2. Alexander Wang High Twist Long Sleeve T-Shirt

For a long sleeve tee, give this slightly oversized offering from Alexander Wang a try. The designer isn’t shy about his love of ‘90s fashion. While the long-sleeve is technically a crew neck, a thicker, tighter weave nods to the mock-neck style that was popular roughly 30 years ago.

[$ 110; alexanderwang.com]

Courtesy Image

3. 3.1 Phillip Lim Oversized Boxy Fit T-Shirt

Just like the name suggests, this trendy tee is oversized and boxy—but it’s certainly not schlubby. Though the wide, flowy sleeves hit right at the elbow, you won’t overheat on balmy days thanks to the stretch cotton jersey construction. Consider tucking this one into your trousers or jeans.

[$ 150; 31philliplim.com]

4. ATM Slub Jersey Crew Neck Tee

Tie-dye is back, you guys, so get in the game. This slub tee from designer Anthony Thomas Melillo has a unique feel, thanks to uneven yarns in the Peruvian cotton. The looser weave drapes over the torso for a breezy fit, though it’s worth noting that the fabric is ever-so-slightly sheer.

[$ 115; atmcollection.com]

5. Everlane The Premium-Weight Crew

Everlane makes the ultimate everyday tee in our book—and it comes in 15 colors. The company’s direct-to-consumer business and commitment to transparency mean you’re paying a significantly lower price than another shirt with comparable quality. These ones are built to last, and the more you wash it, the softer it gets.

[$ 28; everlane.com]

Courtesy Image

6. Acne Mock Neck T-Shirt Optic White

We all know the Swedes are stylish folk, and Acne Studios’ optic white tee is emblematic of this fact. Just take a peek at the high mock neckline, the shorter dropped sleeves, and an iconic pink logo-printed tab sewn into the left side. The subtle details are incredibly stylish—but this still manages to be a versatile wardrobe addition that’ll span the seasons.

[$ 160; acnestudios.com]

Courtesy Image

7. Frescobol Carioca V-Neck Linen Blend T-Shirt

The mashup of linen and cotton-blend jersey makes for an insanely breathable fabric. This tee is begging to be worn on a tropical vacation or commuting on a humid summer day. The V-neck does more than dress it up a bit, also lengthening the appearance of the neck and making your pecs look fuller.

[$ 140; frescobolcarioca.com]

Courtesy Image

8. John Elliott Curve U-Neck

Crafted in Los Angeles, this tee has a slight scoop that dips below the collarbone. It’s longer than average, too, with a curved bottom hem. We’d layer this one under a sweatshirt or wear it with a slim-fit denim jean.

[$ 72; johnelliott.com]

Courtesy Image

9. Maison Margiela Pack of 3 ‘Stereotype’ T-Shirts

Yes, it’s possible to buy stylish and in bulk with Maison Margiela’s 3-pack of cotton jersey crew-necks. These aren’t the most affordable tees around, but we promise it’ll be one of your most-worn within the first month. Margiela serves up a relaxed fit in a trio of monochromatic colors from stark white to light beige—neutrals that you can pretty much pair with anything.

[$ 340; maisonmargiela.com]

Courtesy Image

10. Rag & Bone Classic Henley

A true wardrobe staple, this classic henley is knitted from ultra-soft slub cotton-jersey and features three Apholos metal buttons. It’s versatile (buttoned down in the summer) and great for layering (under a sweater in the spring and fall). Plus, no one ever hated on a henley.

#Unpacked2020: Samsung Saves The Best For Last With Its New Series of Galaxy S20 Smartphones

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Like they always do, Samsung saved the best for last during its Unpacked event in San Francisco, Tuesday morning (Feb.11). After formally introducing us to its new foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung had one more ace up its sleeve, the Galaxy S20.

The next Galaxy phone has arrived, and based on what we saw and got to experience will give the iPhone 11 and Pro Max some serious competition. The S20 comes in three different models, a base S20 model ($ 999.99), the S20+ ($ 1,199.99) and S20 Ultra ($ 1,399.99). Each model will take full advantage of 5G, and according to Samsung, will change how “we capture and experience our world.”

So what’s new? Well, let’s start with the cameras on each device.

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

The S20 (pictured above) sports a Triple Camera system that features an Ultra-Wide: 12MP, 120 ˚, F2.2, Wide-angle: 12MP, 79 ˚, F1.8, and Telephoto: 64 MP, 76 ˚, F2.0. The S20+ has a Quad Camera system that ports over the same camera’s as the S20 but adds a fourth lens for Depth Vision. The front-facing camera has been moved from the right side of the phone like on Galaxy S10 and S10+. It has now been placed in the middle copying the Galaxy Note 10. Both the S20 and S20+ have the same 10MP, 80 ˚, F2.2 camera.

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

The big boy, aka the S20 Ultra, is in a class all by itself in the camera department. Like the S20+, it also has an Ultra-Wide: 12MP, 120 ˚, but that’s where similarities stop. It’s wide-angle camera bumps up to 108MP. The S20 Ultra’s Telephoto lens also sees a slight boost: 48MP, 24 ˚, F3.5.  Its selfie camera is upgraded to a 40MP, 80 ˚F2.2. All three phones feature a new feature called Space Zoom, but the S20 Ultra boasts a Hybrid Optic Zoom 10X and Super-Resolution Zoom up to 100X. You can peep how it works in the video we recorded during the event.

Samsung is also using much larger camera sensors for its most significant upgrade since the Galaxy S7 jumping from 64 megapixels to an astounding 108 megapixels. You can look forward to much clearer and sharper photos and better shots in low light situations.

Another neat trick that shows off how AI (artificial intelligence) helps take S20’s camera to another level with the new Single Take mode. Basically, when you capture a photo using the method, it will give several different options like videos, cropped, ultra-wide, live focus, and color options for you to choose from.

The S20 will also be ushering in 8K video recording with improved Super Steady with anti-rolling stabilization and AI motion analysis.

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

As far as the displays, Samsung made sure all three models of the S20 have the same quality coming with 120Hz display support are HDR10+ certified plus Dynamic AMOLED 2X. So basically, that means the Android operating system, games, movies, and your videos will run quite smoothly. The only difference is the size of each screen, as you can tell by the picture above.

As far as battery life, the S20 has a 4,000mAh, S20+ 4,500mAh battery, and the S20 Ultra with a massive 5,000mAh battery. All promise all-day battery life and fast charging, whether plugged in on or wireless. Memory was never an issue with Samsung’s phones, and that trend continues with the new phones. Both the S20 and S20+ come with 12GB RAM while the S20 Ultra can come in a 12GB/16GB RAM option.

As far as internal memory, the S20 comes with 128GB while the S20+ and S20 Ultra with either 128GB/512GB internal storage with all three models offering an expandable boost up to 1TB.

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Some other goodies announced during the Samsung event, the new Galaxy Buds+, Samsung’s partnership with Netflix that gives Galaxy owners exclusive bonus content from their favorite shows. Galaxy owners will also gain access to YouTube Premium and can enjoy using Google’s video chat tool, Google Duo, which is now built-in the S20’s phone apps.

There was some big news for gamers as well, Samsung announced a partnership with Xbox and will be bringing to Forza Street to the S20 exclusively. A huge step for Microsoft’s ambitions in cloud gaming as well.

The S20 arrives March 6, 2020, and will be widely available in these colors:

  • Galaxy S20: Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue, Cloud Pink
  • Galaxy S20+: Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue, Cosmic Black
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra: Cosmic Gray, Cosmic Black

Pre-orders for the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra begin February 21, 2020, at 12:01 am ET.

The Best (and Most Innovative) Razors for a Close, Safe Shave

We preach about good grooming regimens all the time: Hair care, skincare, beard trimming, sun protection, and the like. While we hope you take our advice across the board, there is perhaps no area more important than shaving. That’s because there are so many variables—namely a very sharp blade or five—being dragged across your skin. The chances for injury, irritation, infection, and ingrowns is steep, and they all center on how steady and slow you take it, as well as how good your razor is. Allow us to introduce you to seven of the very best razors on the market for your face, head, and body alike. Some are heated and electric while others are disposable-but-high-tech. Ultimately, they’re all going to help give you a close, smooth shave, minus the pain. (Just make sure you follow the other shaving steps closely, too.)

The Best Body Hair Trimmers to Make Grooming Easier

GilletteLabs Heated Razor

Maybe it’s a shock to start this roster with a $ 200 razor. But hear us out: GilletteLabs sought to mimic the timeless barbershop tradition of the hot-towel shave, and they have succeeded handsomely with this heated razor. The heated bar on the razor’s head keeps pores open as you shave, while simultaneously heating your mug and warming your spirits. This is lavish, yes, but it makes your shaving regimen quite enjoyable, and even forces you to slow down and appreciate the experience.

[$ 200; gillette.com]

Supply Single-edge Safety Razor

Supply recently went head to head with the Sharks of Shark Tank and found themselves with a deal: Their single-blade, perfectly weighted razors take the guesswork out of safety-razor shaving. Like any other safety razors, they are ideal for anyone who is prone to bumps and ingrown hairs, or who has too-sensitive skin for a five-blade pass. However, because of their perfect and customizable design (with three options for blade exposure, as well as a fast-loading head), they also make safety-blade shaving easier and far less daunting for the rest of us.

HeadBlade Moto Head-shaving Razor

Godspeed to anyone who wants to shave his head with a standard-fare razor or safety blade. You should use something ergo-friendly, and designed for the spherical task, rather than the same device you use on the contours of your cheek and jaw. HeadBlade is exactly that, and in turn, it always works exceptionally for your face and body, too. It expedites the process—not that you need to go fast, but it certainly spares you from taking 20 minutes too long on the rear of your head. And at $ 12, there’s no reason you shouldn’t say yes. (Though the limited-edition, $ 75 gold-plated and polished GoldFinger Moto is a worthy gift to any bald man in your life.)

[$ 12; headblade.com]

Harry’s Truman Razor Set

Ever since it leapt ahead in the subscription-shaving game, Harry’s has been the brand to watch. For just $ 15, you can get your starter Truman kit—the foundational razor with its weighted, rubber-grip razor and those German-engineered 5-blade cartridges (with the ability to receive replacement blades routinely by mail). Plus, the brand is constantly partnering with others to issue limited-release colors and designs. If you don’t fancy the orange, blue, or green standard picks (though they’re all sharp, in our opinion), just wait a month or two and you might score something one-off and fabulous.

BIC 5-Blade Disposable Razor With 6 Cartridges

There’s no need to buy cheap, flimsy, disposable razors when BIC is out here making 5-head, flexible-blade, aloe-enhanced, ergo-grip razors. We question the notion that you even need to dispose of the razor as you cycle through its cartridges, since it could compete in efficacy against some of the best “non-disposable” razors.

[$ 16; amazon.com]

Parker Semi-Slant Safety Razor

By angling and slanting its safety-blade razor heads, Parker guarantees a safe, smooth shave. They’re double-edge razors with less blade exposure, thus less worry for wear on your precious skin. A little pressure goes a long way with these chrome-finished, brass-framed baddies.

Philips Norelco electric shaver + trimmer + detailer

Makers of some of the best beard and body trimmers around, Philips Norelco also leads shaving innovation with this hybrid shaver + trimmer + detailer. You can get a close shave (not all the way to the skin, which some guys prefer; it’s a barely-there scruff), as well as the ease of cleaning up your cheek lines, neckline, and even your body hair. The device is rechargeable and shaves wet or dry, if you prefer an in-shower cleanup.

The Best Body Hair Trimmers to Make Grooming Easier

In a perfect world, you’d only need one body hair trimmer to groom anything and everything—from those unruly hairs in your nose to the winter sweater that sprouts from your torso. A dual beard trimmer and ball trimmer sounds perfect, but your jawbones give you a lot more structure and tautness than the freewheelers down below. For that reason, it’s likely you need a few body hair trimmers instead of just one device to manicure yourself head to toe.

How to Grow and Maintain a Long, Unruly Beard Like Jason Momoa

Here are our favorite body hair trimmers to cater to everything from your head to your junk—from established brands like Panasonic to relative newcomers like MANGROOMER. They’re thoughtfully designed, durable, and efficient—all experts in their respective overgrown fields.

Best of all: Most can be used wet or dry, so you can give yourself a touch up when you’re in the shower.

Panasonic Cordless Men’s Beard Trimmer (ER-GB42-K model)

Best for: beard

Your beard trimmer should present you with options and precision: Panasonic’s gives you 19 different settings, for beards of all lengths. Better yet, it can tackle varying lengths all at once, and you can use it wet or dry. Trim without any stubborn hairs escaping its blades, then rinse it clean. A rubber grip ensures a steady hold, and a mustache trimmer allows for tedious under-nose detailing. It trims for nearly an hour on a full charge, and is far more affordable than similar models on the market.

Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro Self-Haircut Kit

Best for: head

This palm-held, ergonomic trimmer is perfect for guys who want to buzz their own heads, trim their stubble down, or even detail the perimeter of either. It adjusts to any size between 1/16 and 5/8 inches. If you’re looking for a polished dome, however, this isn’t the device for you; it simply snips everything down to a stubble (or half-inch buzz), and easily.

baKblade 2.0 Plus

Best for: back

If you’re hirsute and live alone—or if your roommate/partner simply refuses to lend you a hand—then you’re left to your own back-trimming devices. Instead of signing up for yoga in order to bend all the right ways, just get a baKblade to trim those hard-to-reach spots. It’s a safety blade at the end of an 18-inch rod, a fairly simple device (and a massively successful one, commercially speaking) that will have you wondering “why didn’t I think of this?”

MANGROOMER body and ball trimmer (7th generation)

Best for: body (and junk)

This dual-headed device (shaver and trimmer) allows you to safely trim the hedges of your private property. With up to eight different lengths, you can achieve whatever aesthetics you desire. It also works well on other parts of the body, if you aren’t so precious about where those blades have been. (Come on, you’re a hygienic guy, and it’s totally fine to use one trimmer universally.) It has wet-dry functionality, if you want to trim up in the shower, and it’s particularly good at preventing breakouts and irritation at the site.

Wahl Ear, Nose, & Brow Trimmer Clipper

Best for: ears, nose, neckline, sideburns, and eyebrows

Here’s an obvious pickup if you need to clean the perimeter of your eyebrows, zap away overgrown sideburns and neck hairs, or disappear stray nose and ear hairs. For just $ 9, this tool is a steal given all the minute detailing it does; possessing one instantly upgrades your grooming game from beginner to intermediate. After all, it’s all in the details.

Philips Norelco detailer

Best for: full-body detailing

While it’s optimized for clean beard lines, this detailing device from Philips Norelco is also apt for your entire body. If you need to zap a few stubbly hairs from your expertly shaped eyebrows or more confidently frame your jewels, the different heads on this trimmer allow you to spot-check, snip, buzz, and draw even lines just about anywhere on the body.
