Canali Assumes Control of 10 Chinese Stores

CHINA BOUND: As China rebounds from the heavy impact of the coronavirus outbreak on luxury spending and retail, brands are rushing to quickly resume business in the Asian country.
Canali is taking back control of 10 of its stores in China, WWD has learned. Located in the Chinese cities of Changsha, Changchun, Hangzhou, Kunming, Nanning, Taiyuan and Xi’an, the units were previously operated by a local franchise partner.
“This is an important project that stems from our conviction about the leading role of the Chinese market. The acquisition signifies our long-term commitment to this strategic market and marks an important cornerstone of the next phase of Canali’s growth in China to elevate the brand presence and customer experience,” commented Stefano Canali, president and chief executive officer of the company.
Canali recalled the company entered the Chinese market in the Nineties, where it operates 47 stores. Taking control of the 10 units, the number of directly operated stores in the market will amount to 26, including other flagships in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hong Kong and Macau. The company’s ceo underscored that the Italian and Chinese cultures share many similarities and emphasized the company’s commitment to create “cultural bridges” between the two countries.

Tmall Brings Chinese Fashion to MFW

The appeal of Chinese consumers is causing international fashion companies to increasingly explore the market, but Chinese fashion has been less in the spotlight.
Alibaba Group’s Tmall, China’s premiere business-to-consumer platform for brands and retailers, has brought two labels from the country to Milan Fashion Week, aiming to expand their and the country’s international visibility in fashion.
Part of the “Tmall China Cool” roving initiative which touched down in New York earlier this month during NYFW: The Shows and will hit Paris next week, the showcase displayed the spring collections of Shushu/Tong and Yirantian.
“The reason why we wanted to do the Tmall China project is that there’s so much young creativity coming out of China and actually these designers have studied in Europe and have worked for other European brands,” explained Christina Fontana, director for fashion and luxury Europe at Alibaba Group, ahead of the show. “They bring that knowledge back to China, mixing it with their culture and capabilities to really build something new.”
Shanghai-based Shushu/Tong was established in 2015 by design duo Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang, both graduates of the London College of Fashion. After cutting their teeth at Simone Rocha and Gareth Pugh, respectively, they launched their own brand,

Chinese Hypebeasts Come To Blows Over KAWS x Uniqlo Collection [Video]

KAWS x Uniqlo 2019

Source: Uniqlo / Uniqlo

Remember when you had to be ready to knuckle up at a sneaker camp out in the United States? Well China is bringing those feels back in 2019.

As spotted on High Snobiety the recent launch of the highly anticipated KAWS x Uniqlo drop caused a real scene at a Chinese retail location. So much so that consumers sprinted into the mall location. Even before the gate was lifted fans crawled in to get first dibs. The frenzy was so lit that they eventually started ripping the wears right off the mannequins.

While this is nothing we haven’t seen at a Black Friday sale things went left rather quickly when some shifty shoppers couldn’t cop their wish list. Footage shows one individual tussling with another male in an effort to rip the t-shirt right off him.

The KAWS x Uniqlo collection sold out immediately online when it was originally released on Monday evening, China time. Thankfully there is more to go around as it is also hitting Europe on June 6. More clips from the madness below.

Home Is Calling for Young Chinese Designers

SHANGHAI — As Champagne glasses clinked and heads of industry assembled at The Woolmark Co.’s gala in October to celebrate 50 years of trade with China, six of the country’s most successful designers presented their capsule collections made with Australian merino wool. During the event, the designers were periodically called for press photos, interviews and business introductions, yet between these obligations, they gravitated back to one another, sharing pats on the back, chats and inside jokes.
Perhaps it isn’t surprising that in the emerging pool of contemporary Chinese designers, there is camaraderie and familiarity among the biggest players. The kinship could also be down to the fact that many of them have studied at the same overseas colleges, shared the same manufacturers and suppliers, and worked in the same studios as their careers advanced.
Although many of these successful young Chinese designers studied their craft overseas — this cohort particularly favoring Central Saint Martins in London, many are now returning home to China to set up or promote their labels as the market in their homeland matures.
There is a mix of reasons why this moment in time offers a unique and exciting opportunity for Chinese designers to return home. As the nation’s economy continues

Shanghai Fashion Week Showcases Chinese Design Talent

Shanghai Fashion Week kicked off October 13 with a roster of increasingly consistent designers from China showing spring collections. Along with the rise of an independent design culture in the country, a change in both the retail mind-set and consumer desires has simultaneously increased the number of stores and boutiques willing to take a chance on local talent.
A few short years ago, a very different crowd populated the fashion week tents located in the city’s upmarket shopping district, Xintiandi. Today, buyers from across China — as well as some from overseas — are joining media and other industry players. The event’s higher profile is also in evident outside the tents, where interested onlookers peruse the parade of street style and scalpers sell tickets to the shows.
Here are some highlights from the spring 2016 collections.
Fake Natoo: Beijing-born Zhang Na showed a breezy, casual Fake Natoo collection for spring, opening her show with a series of white cotton shirts, trousers and shirtdresses — worn loose and sometimes layered. While the lineup lacked the drama and gravitas of her fall outing, slinky full-length silk dresses and wide-leg jumpsuits hanging from barely-there crisscross spaghetti straps were a highlight.
The designer also increased her use of prints

Farewell Pearl River! 8 Stylish Bargains to Snag Before the Chinese Shopping Emporium Closes

Pearl River

It is December 24, and it is snowing. Too late for Internet shopping, too sad to look for gifts at Duane Reade! You’re broke, but you are a person of taste, and refinement, and people expect a great present from you! What do you do?

For 23 years, New Yorkers have found the answer to this dilemma at Pearl River Mart in SoHo, three floors crammed with velvet slippers, brocade change purses, miso soup spoons, painted chests, parasols, paper fans, and things you never knew you—or your friends—wanted: a set of penguin tea cups? A cartoon dog lamp?

Or maybe it isn’t Christmas, it is spring-cleaning time, and you are in desperate need of something to hide the junk that has accumulated in your studio apartment. (Well, that is my idea of spring cleaning . . . ) Pearl River has a room divider, and it’s six feet tall and gorgeous and printed with graceful bamboo stalks. And just because you love them, and they put you in the mood for the Met’s upcoming exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” why not blow $ 16.50 on a pair of satin slip-ons decorated with dragons?

Now this wonderful emporium, a beloved New York City landmark, is closing, another victim of skyrocketing neighborhood rents. Believe it or not, their current rent of more than $ 100,000 a month is purportedly being raised to more than half a million dollars. (Who could imagine that lacquer chopsticks and bamboo bird cages would add up to $ 100,000 a month?)

The Pearl River website is still alive and kicking, and store owners say they are searching for another location. Which is a very good thing—you never know when you will just have to have a take-out-container-shaped purse, or a scarlet lantern, or maybe—splurge!—a $ 295 handmade gong with a mallet. Bang it slowly: RIP, Pearl River in SoHo.
