Pop Smoke Murder Investigation Stalled Due To Coronavirus

Street Style - Paris Fashion Week - Menswear F/W 2020-2021 : Day Three

Source: Jeremy Moeller / Getty

Back in February, Pop was Smoke was shot and killed in a home he was staying in located in the Hollywood Hills. Unfortunately, the investigation into the up and coming Brooklyn rapper’s murder has stalled due to the coronavirus.

The killing seems like it was obviously either an inside job or a targeted hit (the killers, four men, knew exactly where to go and dipped out without being caught), but the cops reportedly have no leads.

Reports TMZ:

Born Bashar Jackson, Pop Smoke was just 20 years old at the time of his death. The “Dior” rapper was coming off just dropping his second commercial mixtape, Meet The Woo 2, and was a leader in the Brooklyn drill music scene.

Rest in power Pop Smoke.

A Guide to the Retailers Reopening Amid the Coronavirus Pandemic

This month, many states will start easing stay-at-home restrictions set because of the coronavirus pandemic, permitting businesses nationwide to begin reopening their doors.
Fashion retailers have been heavily impacted by the pandemic, which has forced many to shutter their doors, furlough their staffs or reduce operations. Several companies, including J. Crew and Neiman Marcus, have filed for bankruptcy due in part to the virus.
After nearly two months of limited operations, major retailers such as Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, among others, have started implementing reopening strategies, which include resuming operations in states with relaxed restrictions, offering curbside pickup or by-appointment services.
Check back on this post, as it will be updated as news develops.
Here, WWD looks at the major U.S. retailers that have started reopening their doors.
Abercrombie & Fitch:
The fashion brand reopened an undisclosed number of locations in states that have eased stay-at-home restrictions.
American Eagle Outfitters Inc.:
The company has reopened 207 American Eagle and Aerie stores across the country. The stores will be practicing social distancing and will offer curbside and in-store pickup options.

A Guide to When States Will Reopen Amid the Coronavirus Pandemic

As the coronavirus pandemic has had much of the country on stay-at-home orders for nearly two months, the question remains when normal life will resume with businesses, restaurants and stores opening up.
Several major retailers, including J.C. Penney Co. Inc., Neiman Marcus Group, Macy’s Inc. and Nordstrom Inc., have already begun devising reopening plans as a few states have started permitting nonessential businesses, such as gyms or hair salons, to resume operations. However, each state is operating on its own reopening schedule, with the focus being on minimizing the spread of the virus.
Here, WWD breaks down when and how each state is reopening amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Check back on this post as we will be updating it as news develops.
Alabama
Alabama was on a stay-at-home order until April 30. Gov. Kay Ivey has now issued a “safer-at-home” order that went into effect on April 30 and lasts until May 15.
Under the order, retail stores and beaches are permitted to reopen as long as they follow sanitation and social distancing guidelines. Retail stores are restricted to 50 percent occupancy and restaurants are restricted to take-out, pickup or delivery options.
Alaska
Alaska’s stay-at-home order went into effect on March 28. The state began reopening as

G&G Garments, Jack Martin Fund Donate 8,000 Respirator Masks Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

G&G Garments and the Jack Martin Fund are teaming to donate 8,000 N95 respirator masks to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
The garment manufacturer, which produces private-label apparel found in retailers such as Macy’s, Dillard’s and Nordstrom, among others, is working with the Jack Martin Fund to obtain the respirator masks from its overseas suppliers and manufacturing partners.
The company is also developing 1,000 headbands — which make wearing masks more comfortable — for the hospital’s frontline workers.
G&G Garments president Glenn Reisender embarked on this initiative because he “felt it’s my civic duty and obligation to help out during the pandemic. With so many strong connections to suppliers and manufacturers overseas, I knew we could make a difference to those on the frontlines.”
The Jack Martin Fund also has a close connection with Mount Sinai, as its supported the hospital for 70 years.
G&G Garments is also importing and selling other essential supplies such as gloves, face shields, hospital gowns, shoe covers, hand sanitizer and infrared thermometers.

Coronavirus Funnies

Tomorrow is the National Home-school Tornado Drill. Lock your kids in the basement until you give the all clear. You’re welcome!

2019: Stay away from negative people.
2020: Stay away from positive people.

The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house, and their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors!

You think it’s bad now? In 20 years our country will be run by people home-schooled by day drinkers…

This virus has done what no woman had been able to do… cancel all sports, shut down all bars, and keep men at home!!!

Do not call the police on suspicious people in your neighborhood! Those are your neighbors without makeup and hair extensions!

Since we can’t eat out, now’s the perfect time to eat better, get fit, and stay healthy.
We’re quarantined! Who are we trying to impress? We have snacks, we have sweatpants. I say we use them!

Day 7 at home and the dog is looking at me like, “See? This is why I chew the furniture!”

Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands???

I never thought the comment, “I wouldn’t touch him/her with a 6 foot pole” would become a national policy, but here we are!

Me: Alexa what’s the weather this weekend?
Alexa: It doesn’t matter… you’re not going anywhere.

Can everyone please just follow the government instructions so we can knock out this corona virus and be done?! I feel like a kindergartner who keeps
losing more recess time because one or two kids can’t follow directions.

When this is over… what meeting do I attend first… Weight Watchers or AA?

Quarantine has turned us into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We are told “no” if we get too close to strangers. And we get really
excited about car rides.

Mississippi Governor Pivoted From Coronavirus Crisis, Declared “Confederate Heritage Month” Last Week

President Trump Holds Rally In Tupelo, Mississippi

Source: Brandon Dill / Getty

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, whose state is currently combating the spread of coronavirus like much of the world, took time from working on the COVID-19 crisis to pander to a small but loud minority. Last week, just days after issuing a stay-at-home order, Reeves proclaimed the month of April “Confederate Heritage Month” which connected back to his questionable dealings in the past.

The Jackson Free Press noted that Gov. Reeves made the proclamation on April 3, just two days after issuing the stay-at-home order he initially resisted passing. States across the nation have wrestled with similar ordinances as the impact felt by the economy slowing to a crawl has shifted perspective.

In support of Reeves, the Mississippi Sons of Confederate Veterans posted a copy of the proclamation to its Facebook page.

“God bless the Confederate Soldier. He shall never be forgotten. Deo Vindice!” read the post. The Latin phrase Deo Vindice translated to “Under God as our indicator as found on the seal of the Confederacy and served as its motto.

The Free Press dug into Reeves’ Sons of Confederate Veterans connections. Back in 2013 while serving as lieutenant governor, Reeves spoke at the group’s reunion. Coverage of Reeves’ speech was revived in 2019 after a blog post sharing details of the moment were unearthed.

This came into play as Reeves was under fire after yearbook photos of his time at Millsaps College revealed he was a part of the Kappa Alpha Order whose members reportedly wore afro wigs and blackface. Reeves denied that he participated in such activities

The Jackson Free Press did an excellent deep dive into this matter, which can be read here.

Social Distancing Hat Gains Popularity, Raises Funds Amid Coronavirus Crisis

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, a number of fashion brands are pitching in to help with COVID-19 relief efforts, including a few new entrants that are leveraging the global crisis to do some good.
Enter Social Distancing Hat, a fund-raising initiative launched two weeks ago that’s giving a nod to the now well-known phrase experts have been using to help stop the spread of the virus. Jazz Legend Ellis Marsalis Has Died Due To Coronavirus

2019 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival - Day 4

Source: Jeff Kravitz / Getty

As the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 ravages the nation, the grave situation has affected notable figures as well. Ellis Marsalis, a legend in New Orleans jazz circles, has died after suffering complications from COVID-19.

Ellis Louis Marsalis Jr. was born on Nov. 14, 1934, in New Orleans. The jazz pianist graduated from Dillard University and attended graduate school at Loyola University New Orleans. While the patriarch of the sprawling Marsalis musical family was adept at his instrument, passing on the knowledge he acquired as a teacher gave him greater fulfillment.

Marsalis was the chief instructor for his talented sons Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo, and Jason Marsalis. He also taught the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Terence Blanchard, and other future jazz figures of the later generations. After working at the high school level at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the city’s first school to be focused solely on public arts, Marsalis then joined the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University ahead of returning home to teach at the University of New Orleans.

As a bandleader, Marsalis left the comfort of the classroom and released well over a dozen recordings, including projects with his sons Wynton, Branford, and Delfeayo. Marsalis was also still very active as a player, working a weekly gig for over 30 years before retiring this year.

The Phi Beta Fraternity, Inc. member was inducted into the Lousiana Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2011, Marsalis and his sons were given the NEA Jazz Masters Award. In 2007, Tulane University awarded Marsalis an honorary doctorate for his many contributions to New Orleans jazz music.

‘Empire’s’ Final Season Has Been Shortened Due To The Coronavirus Pandemic

FOX's "Empire" - Season Three

Source: FOX / Getty

Welp, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Jussie Smollett-less final season of Empire has been shortened.

For those of you still wondering, yes, Empire still comes on, and during last night’s episode, fans were told to “Get ready for the shocking final three episodes of Empire.Deadline is reporting the episode that airs on April 21 will be the final one.

Per Deadline:

“The last completed episode before the coronavirus-imposed production shutdown, Episode 18, which is scheduled to air on April 21, is now set to be the premature end of Empire. To help create a more seamless overall ending, we hear this newly minted finale will likely feature footage from Episode 19, which was halfway through filming when the health crisis paused all Hollywood production. The show’s long intended ending, the series finale Episode 20, will never see the light of day for the once blockbuster.”

The show’s final season already underwent massive changes due to Jussie Smollett getting the boot following his staged homophobic attack, and now the coronavirus is the latest monkey wrench thrown into the shows cogs. But don’t fret when Empire goes away that doesn’t mean you will have seen the last of fan-favorite, Cookie Lyons.

Deadline reported back in January that FOX is considering the idea of Taraji P.Henson led spinoff of Empire that will see Cookie return and showrunners Lee Daniels and Danny Strong are very intrigued by the plan.

Will you guys be tuning in to the final three episodes of Empire? Or have you had already tuned out seasons ago? Let us know in the comment section below.

7 Grants Helping Small Businesses Impacted by Coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the fashion, beauty and retail industries is staggering, as major retailers have shuttered their doors, halted production and even furloughed most of their employees in response to the virus.
While major companies are experiencing setbacks, small businesses across the country and the globe are feeling the brunt of the losses with many independent fashion labels ceasing operations, streamlining their collections and making other changes in anticipation for an uncertain future post-COVID-19.
Several major companies and cities across the country have responded to the challenges facing small businesses amid the pandemic by creating grants to keep them afloat, including the likes of Facebook, Google and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
The $ 2 trillion Coronavirus Stimulus Package signed by President Donald Trump last week also offers respite to small business owners, with a $ 350 billion federal small business loan program.
Here, WWD lists seven grants for small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amazon
Amazon has created a $ 5 million Neighborhood Small Business Relief Fund to offer cash grants to small businesses with fewer than 50 employees or less than $ 7 million in annual revenue in the Seattle area, including in the South Lake Union, Bellevue and Regrade neighborhoods.

Coronavirus Doesn’t Deter Online Jewelry Auction Bids

Sotheby’s logged one of its most successful jewelry auctions ever this week amid global coronavirus lockdowns.
The auction house marked its best sell-through for an online jewelry sale, selling 97 percent of lots from its Jewels Online auction that wrapped on Wednesday. The sale realized $ 739,375, far surpassing its highest total estimate of $ 671,600.
Sotheby’s says that half of the auction’s lots exceeded their highest estimate and that it received bidders from 32 countries with an average six bidders per lot. Approximately 22 percent of the auction’s buyers are new customers for Sotheby’s and half of all bids were placed through mobile devices.
The biggest sale was a pair of ruby earrings by Michele Della Valle that realized $ 25,000 — far more than the lot’s high estimate of $ 7,000. Sotheby’s says that the sale’s lots by David Webb, Tiffany & Co. and Verdura all saw 100 percent sell-through rates.
A Paloma Picasso chunky green peridot necklace designed for Tiffany’s realized $ 12,500 — approximately six times its highest estimate of $ 2,000. A pair of Verdura Byzantine ear clips originally thought to take between $ 5,000 and $ 7,000 sold for $ 13,750.
Sotheby’s global head of online jewels said of the sale in a statement: “In this unprecedented moment,

Everlane Cuts Hundreds of Workers Over Coronavirus Pressure

Everlane ended this week with several hundred fewer workers as it struggles to cope with the shutdown of its retail business over measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Although the California company has spent the last two weeks e-mailing customers about reduced prices for its brand, made up of casual basics, and striking a positive tone with employees, in the end it decided to layoff and furlough more than 200 workers, including retail and those operating backend functions.
A group of Everlane workers, non-store employees involved in customer experience online, had formed a union in December and wrote of the sudden layoffs on Twitter. The group claimed that “every member of our union committee was fired.” The union had not yet been recognized by company leadership, but they claimed to have only recently formalized a request for recognition.
“Anyone that showed public support of the union with a union slack avatar was fired,” the group wrote. “Everlane is using this pandemic as an excuse to gut our movement.”

After backlash from temp workers getting fired, the social team at Everlane was given instructions to remove the phrase “We’re in this together” from posts. We’re not in this together. Everlane just wants to

How Independent Brands Are Protecting Themselves Amid the Coronavirus Pandemic

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow and businesses worldwide are being hit, it is the smaller, independent brands and retailers that often are suffering the most.
WWD asked designers and small stores that support them how they are protecting themselves during this unprecedented time, and how they are looking ahead to the coming months. While some have found various ways to cope, others are energized to assist where needed, creating face masks or donating to charities. One common thread is an emphasis on community — protecting employees and factory workers while finding ways to engage digitally.
Here, part one on how independent brands are charging on.

How the Coronavirus Pandemic Has Impacted the British Royal Family

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted people across the globe in an unprecedented way. The virus continues to spread rapidly worldwide — the current count is 425,600 cases and 19,301 deaths globally as of March 25 — and even the British royal family hasn’t been exempt from its effect. Wednesday’s news that Prince Charles has contracted COVID-19 was the latest update in how the pandemic has impacted the monarchy.
The royal family began making changes to their daily schedules in early March as COVID-19 became a more serious public health crisis. Queen Elizabeth II, for one, left Buckingham Palace for Windsor Castle a week earlier than she initially planned for the Easter holiday. She is now said to be staying at the castle with the ailing Prince Philip well beyond the Easter holiday.

This Initiative Provides Aid to Ethiopian Women Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

What is the story behind your handbag? Parker Clay, an emerging leather goods company, designs its products in California and manufactures them in Ethiopia—and unlike most brands, the story of how the bags get made means everything to Parker Clay.

Over 130 employees work at its Ethiopian factory, and 96 of them are women. Of these women, 32 were found through Parker Clay’s partnership with the non-profit Christian women’s rights organization Ellilta—Women at Risk. The organization’s goal is to bring women out of prostitution—which is both legal and widespread in Ethiopia—and find them skills training and employment in safe, sustainable trade industries, like leather goods.

Parker Clay’s founders, Ian and Brittany Bentley, wanted to create such an environment for Ethiopian women. Its factory in Addis Ababa gives its artisans higher wages and more benefits, including laundry facilities, access to transportation, vacation time, and pension, pursuing the company’s goal of combining human rights advocacy with sustainable, superior goods.

Each of Parker Clay’s products—handbags, totes, wallets, backpacks, etc.—is hand-woven on a loom with weaving practices unique to Ethiopian culture. Parker Clay’s products support local cattle farmers and also incorporate all-natural vegetable dyes, which are better for the environment. They’re designed, as the best leather goods are, to be timeless, to age with style.

One Shoe Brand Is Restoring Health to the New York Harbor

By visiting its store online, you can support Parker Clay’s mission to provide women working in prostitution with artisan jobs. In 2020, the brand plans to employ over 100 more Ethiopian women from backgrounds of prostitution.

Parker Clay’s ongoing promotion, We Go Together, is taking a “pay it forward” approach. Donors can support the brand and, in exchange, receive two gift cards of equal value, as well as a sizable discount. For example, those who donate $ 100 will receive two $ 100 gift cards—one in September, one next January—as well as a 40 percent discount code toward your next purchase. Slim Thug Talks Dealing With Coronavirus After Diagnosis: “I Feel Good”

Slim Thug

Source: @slimthug / Instagram

On Tuesday (Mar 24) after announcing that he had tested positive for COVID-19, Slim Thug took to his Instagram to share the truth about staying safe and how even when you feel like you’re the most protected––you’re still vulnerable.

Since receiving the diagnosis from his personal doctor, Slim Thug outlined the importance of getting tested. During an exclusive interview with Houston’s 97.9 The Box, Thugga expounded on everything leading up to his diagnosis and what finally led to him being tested.

“I got tested on Monday and got my results back on Tuesday,” Slim said. “I think because I had access to my personal doctor and the only way they let me take the test is because I said I had symptoms. You gotta have shortness of breath and your fever gotta be high. If you’re young, they’re just gonna tell you to stay at home and sit this out because they don’t want to waste tests.”

Slim did say he went to the rodeo around the 28th and the barbershop but all of his other travels have been to the grocery store and the house. As far as the rumor goes that celebs are being paid to tell people they have the virus, Slim put that to bed as well.

“On my kids, nobody has paid me to do this. That’s goofy,” he said. “I see a lot of people saying that and it’s dumb. I don’t get it, why would I get paid for this?”

Check out the interview below.

Fashion Fights Coronavirus: Designers Create Masks, Hospital Gowns and More to Fight Pandemic

Many of the world’s fashion designers and brands have had to halt everyday operations due to the coronavirus pandemic — but now, several firms are reallocating resources to fight the virus’ spread.
As COVID-19 cases have sharply increased, affecting 341,500 people and causing 15,187 deaths globally as of March 23, so too has the need for essential resources, such as masks, hospital gowns and hand sanitizer.
Fashion designers including Christian Siriano, Brandon Maxwell and Michael Costello are coming in to help fill that gap, mobilizing their teams to produce supplies needed by health-care workers and COVID-19 patients.
Larger companies, such as LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Kering, L’Oréal and Coty are also pitching in, having their factories produce hand sanitizer to distribute free of charge to health authorities.
Here, WWD compiles the ways that fashion designers and brands are pitching in to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kim Kardashian Addresses Taylor Swift, Cops Coronavirus Pleas Defending Yeezy

Balenciaga : Front Row - Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2020/2021

Source: Pierre Suu / Getty

Taylor Swift had a major “I told y’all so” moment this past weekend when the full video of her conversation with Kanye West over “Famous” was leaked. It made Yeezy and his wife look shady, and now Kim Kardashian has broken her silence about the situation.

As previously reported, the video made it evident that Kanye West failed to mention the “I made that b*tch famous” portion of the infamous song.

Swift addressed the clip on Monday on her IG story, saying that it proved that she had been telling the truth (that we hadn’t given her the full story) the entire time, despite Yeezy and Kim calling her a snake regarding the matter.

Well late tonight (March 23), Kardashian addressed Swift via Twitter.

“.@taylorswift13 has chosen to reignite an old exchange – that at this point in time feels very self-serving given the suffering millions of real victims are facing right now,” tweeted Kardashian.

Hang tight, because she kept going, for a while. She added, “I didn’t feel the need to comment a few days ago, and I’m actually really embarrassed and mortified to be doing it right now, but because she continues to speak on it, I feel I’m left without a choice but to respond because she is actually lying.”

Get your popcorn.

Kardashian continued, “To be clear, the only issue I ever had around the situation was that Taylor lied through her publicist who stated that ‘Kanye never called to ask for permission…’ They clearly spoke so I let you all see that. Nobody ever denied the word ‘bitch’ was used without her permission. At the time when they spoke the song had not been fully written yet, but as everyone can see in the video, she manipulated the truth of their actual conversation in her statement when her team said she ‘declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message.’ The lie was never about the word bitch, It was always whether there was a call or not and the tone of the conversation.

“I never edited the footage (another lie) – I only posted a few clips on Snapchat to make my point and the full video that recently leaked doesn’t change the narrative. To add, Kanye as an artist has every right to document his musical journey and process, just like she recently did through her documentary. Kanye has documented the making of all of his albums for his personal archive, however has never released any of it for public consumption & the call between the two of them would have remained private or would have gone in the trash had she not lied & forced me to defend him. This will be the last time I speak on this because honestly, nobody cares. Sorry to bore you all with this. I know you are all dealing with more serious and important matters.”

A couple of things we’ll note off top. As you’ve read, that’s a lot of commentary for a topic “nobody cares” about. Also, did she really try to bring up the coronavirus as if people can’t quarantine and multitask?

Tell us what you think about Kim’s reasoning and plea copping in the comments. If you care.

Idris Elba’s Wife Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Idris Elba & Sabrina Dhowre

Source: Oprah WInfrey / Twitter

Marriage means for better or for worse. Unfortunately for Idris Elba’s wife, Sabrina Dhowre, she too has been diagnosed with the Coronavirus.

“I’ve been tested… Actually, I found out this morning, Oprah, that I tested positive,” Dhowre told Oprah Winfrey during a Facetime video chat on Saturday  (March 21). The interview was part of Winfrey’s new series, Oprah Talks, for Apple TV+

Dhowre was next to her husband, and the couple is actually in New Mexico where they are under quarantine. Her diagnosis was inevitable considering she was with Elba when he revealed his status early last week.

Dhowre added, “I wanted to be with him. That’s the instinct of a wife. You want to go and take care.”

Elba also spoke on COVID-19 being a message that the human race has been kicking the world itself, and it needs to chill.

“Our world has been taking a kicking. We damaged our world, and it’s no surprise that our world is reacting to the human race,” Elba, one of the first celebs to share their diagnosis, told Winfrey. “It’s no surprise that a virus has been created that will slow us down, and ultimately make us think differently about our world, and ourselves. This is almost like the world’s cry-out, like, hey, hey, hey, you’re kicking me. What you’re doing is not good. So [what] any organism would do is try to get rid of an infection, so maybe this is it for the world.”

Prayers up and speedy recoveries to Idris Elba and Sabrina Dhowre, who so far have shown no symptoms.

How the Coronavirus Is Impacting the Fashion, Beauty and Retail Industries

The impact of the coronavirus is being felt by virtually every industry.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which amassed 182,100 cases and caused 7,305 deaths globally as of March 17, has led to the disruption of everyday life, with local governments enacting strict measures to contain the virus’ spread.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio have made such orders to prohibit large gatherings, including closures of restaurants, bars, gyms, nightclubs and other businesses. These measures have affected myriad fashion and beauty businesses, many of which are now closing their doors for an indefinite period of time.

The Fashion Weeks and Major Events Disrupted Because of Coronavirus

As the coronavirus outbreak spreads, so too its effect on the fashion industry.
COVID-19 has steadily spread globally currently with more than 100 nations affected by the virus, with cases totaling at roughly 135,400 and the death toll at 4,988 as of March 13.
The virus hit Italy in the midst of Milan Fashion Week late February, causing many designers to rethink how they’d present their fall 2020 collections. Giorgio Armani, for one, barred a public audience at his runway show, later posting a video of the collection shown in an empty theater.
The virus continues to have an adverse effect on design houses, many of which have had to cancel or postpone their international resort 2021 shows.
Events are also not immune to the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak. A number of major gatherings — including SXSW, Coachella and the Tribeca Film Festival — have already been canceled, leading many to speculate the fate of others, such as the Met Gala, CFDA Awards and even the Olympic Games.
Here, WWD compiles a list of the fashion weeks and major events canceled or disrupted because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Coronavirus Pandemic: The NYC Museums, Cultural Institutions and Fashion Schools Temporarily Closing

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has touched virtually every industry, leading to the closures of a number of institutions in New York City and nationwide.
As COVID-19 cases continue to increase globally — the worldwide count is at roughly 135,400 cases and 4,988 deaths as of March 13 — New York Gov. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has also declared a state of emergency in New York City, which has about 95 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the mayor. Along with SXSW and Dreamville Fest, another major music festival has been postponed or moved as a result of the spreading Coronavirus. Pharrell Williams’ Something In The Water festival will now take place in 2021.
A statement from Skateboard P reads as follows:

After much consideration, in partnership with the City of Virginia Beach, we’ve sadly decided to postpone SOMETHING IN THE WATER 2020.

We will return April 23-25, 2021 as part of our normal annual schedule. All tickets for 2020 will be honored for next year’s festival. Original purchasers must obtain a refund by submitting a request at SOMETHINGINTHEWATER.COM after March 20, 2020. All refund requests must be submitted through the website and no refunds will be processed by contacting Front Gate Tickets via phone or email.

Please use this time to keep building, creating, and progressing. The SITW team certainly will. There are a number of timely community-centric displays of goodwill that we are working hard to ensure still happen this April – things like the planting of a new school garden, public art, SITW Restaurant Week and more.

It’s kind of a bummer but better safe than sorry. See you next year, SITW crew!

New York’s Top Fashion Design Schools Cancel Classes Over Coronavirus

New York City’s top two fashion design schools have decided to cancel classes and move to remote instruction in light of the growing coronavirus pandemic. Both the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design are increasing measures to avoid outbreaks on campus.
Late Wednesday afternoon, New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that all state and New York City government-affiliated universities would move toward remote instruction beginning March 19 in an effort to promote “distance learning” and reduce “campus density,” throughout the remainder of this spring semester. The Fashion Institute of Technology, which is a SUNY school, is included in this mandate and has suspended classes from March 16 to 22 so that professors can “prepare for potential online class instruction and for employees to prepare to work remotely.”
FIT president Joyce Brown issued a memo to students this afternoon noting, “Beginning March 16, all classes will be suspended for a week to allow faculty to prepare for potential online class instruction and for staff and administration to prepare contingency plans for working remotely or implementing alternative scheduling in the event the campus is required to close or there is a determination to reduce the population density of the campus. NBA Suspends Season After Rudy Gobert Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Utah Jazz v Boston Celtics

Source: Omar Rawlings / Getty

The NBA season is done. The pro basketball league has suspended the 2019-2020 season after Rudy Gobert tested positive for the Coronavirus, which has now been classified as a pandemic.

The NBA reported that a Utah Jazz player had tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19), and they got word of it before the Jazz were set to play the Oklahoma City Thunder. Although the player was not in the arena, the game was still canceled.

“The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of tonight’s schedule of games until further notice,” reads the statement, released shortly before 10pm ET. “The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.”

USA Today reported that a person familiar with the situation confirmed that it was Rudy Gobert. Earlier in the day, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver held a conference call to discuss the next steps of dealing with the coronavirus. Most were said to be on board to suspend play or move forward with only essential personnel in arenas. But word is the Knicks were the only team who wanted to remain business as usual until the government issued some sort of mandate, per ESPN.

Earlier in the day, the NCAA announced that only essential staff and family would be allowed to attend the Men’s Basketball tournament games, putting a damper on March Madness.

In a sick twist of fate, it was Gobert who joked about the coronavirus by touching all the mics in front of him at the conclusion of a post-game presser a few days. Not so funny now—and life comes at you fast.

Strip Clubs Giving Away Free Masks, Sanitizer To Combat Coronavirus

The Naughty But Nice Show

Source: Andrew Chin / Getty

A strip club in Florida and a second in Las Vegas are doing their due diligence to help combat the spread of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, one lap dance at a time.

According to TMZ, Florida strip club, Déjà Vu Showgirls, and Las Vegas strip club, Little Darlings, are both helping to combat the spread of the virus in the best way they know how—club promotions. It’s reported that the world-famous Little Darlings in Las Vegas just announced a massive giveaway: 50,000 bottles of free hand sanitizer, one for each paying customer while supplies last; and across the country in Tampa, Déjà Vu Showgirls is giving away free face masks to the first 10,000 paying customers.

While most major retailers are reporting that basic supplies including hand sanitizer, face masks and Lysol are hard to keep in stock, the two clubs are lending a helping hand allowing you the ease of avoiding panic in stores.

Although the promotion seems far fetched and opportunistic, according to a representative fromDéjà Vu tells local publication Creative Loafing, the club ran out of supplies within just two days of the promotion.

“It might seem silly,” said Déjà Vu Showgirls Tampa general manager Mark Figueroa in a press release, “but we take the health of our guests very seriously. Being the busiest and most popular nightclub in Tampa, we have to ensure the show will go on.”

Little Darlings told local outlet the Sacramento Bee that the organization felt it was it’s duty to help safeguard employees and patrons who are visiting one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world.

“[A]n opportunity to help with the Coronavirus scare is extremely important to us,” LeAnna DaPoint, one of the club’s managers at Little Darlings, told the outlet. “Las Vegas is a tourist mecca, and we have to do everything possible to stay virus-free. It might seem silly, but we take the health of our guests very seriously. Being the most popular adult club in Las Vegas, we have to ensure the show will go on!”

Although the Center for Disease Control warns that face masks are useless in preventing the spread of the virus, it’s nice to see organizations pitching in to help where they can.

AerieReal Summit Sells Out Despite Coronavirus Fears

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Fears of the coronavirus didn’t stop Aerie from celebrating the ladies.
More than 300 people — including Aerie fans, executives, friends of the brand like author Katherine Schwarzenegger and model Hunter McGrady, and 12 of the 13 AerieReal role models — flocked to New York City’s Dumbo neighborhood for the sold-out AerieReal Summit, the intimate brand’s first, on International Women’s Day on Sunday.
But instead of high-fives and hugs, attendees exchanged air-kisses and elbow bumps. That’s because only a day earlier, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency thanks to an increase of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state.
Still, attendance was “beyond expectations,” Stacey McCormick, senior vice president of Aerie marketing, told WWD. “We didn’t know with all this media happening right now with the coronavirus; we weren’t sure if people would show. But everyone’s here and we’re excited.”
The all-day event was held at the upscale 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge and included panel discussions on things like sustainability, love and success and Schwarzenegger talking about forgiveness in honor of her new book, also about forgiveness. Attendees sipped on green juice smoothies, potted do-it-yourself air plants and took turns talking to the role models in the “Real

SXSW Canceled Over Coronavirus Fears by City of Austin

South by Southwest is officially canceled after much speculation over fears of coronavirus.
The annual music festival-turned tech and media event released a statement Friday afternoon saying the city of Austin, Tex., where the event is held, decided to cancel SXSW, scheduled to begin next weekend. This is the first time in 34 years of the event that it will not take place, organizers said, and it appears to be the first instance of a U.S. city intervening to cancel a large event. SXSW draws more than 150,000 people to Austin for a weekend of performances, panels and branded events.
“We are devastated to share this news with you,” the statement reads. “’The show must go on’ is in our DNA.…We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation.”
The so-called “unprecedented situation” is the feared spread and effects of COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, a flu-like virus that has gripped public consciousness in the last several weeks as it spread from an epicenter in China to most continents and roughly 100,000 confirmed cases of the disease.
SXSW is just the latest event to be canceled over the virus, but organizers noted that, “as recently as Wednesday, Austin Public Health stated that ‘there’s

Ralph Lauren to Cancel April Fashion Show Due to the Coronavirus Outbreak

Add Ralph Lauren to the list of companies that are canceling events due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Lauren said Tuesday night it has decided to cancel its April fashion show, which was planned for an unspecified location in New York.
“In light of the ongoing uncertainties related to the novel coronavirus around the world, we have decided to cancel our fall 2020 show as a precautionary measure and out of respect for our teams, partners and consumers. Our primary focus remains on their health and safety,” said a Ralph Lauren spokesman.
As reported, Lauren didn’t participate in New York Fashion Week in February and had instead decided to show separately in late April. Lauren had been on the “see-now-buy-now schedule” since September 2016, and he was planning to get out of that rhythm and routine and show fall 2020 in April.
