Fashion Fights Coronavirus: Designers Create Masks, Hospital Gowns and More to Fight Pandemic

Many of the world’s fashion designers and brands have had to halt everyday operations due to the coronavirus pandemic — but now, several firms are reallocating resources to fight the virus’ spread.
As COVID-19 cases have sharply increased, affecting 341,500 people and causing 15,187 deaths globally as of March 23, so too has the need for essential resources, such as masks, hospital gowns and hand sanitizer.
Fashion designers including Christian Siriano, Brandon Maxwell and Michael Costello are coming in to help fill that gap, mobilizing their teams to produce supplies needed by health-care workers and COVID-19 patients.
Larger companies, such as LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Kering, L’Oréal and Coty are also pitching in, having their factories produce hand sanitizer to distribute free of charge to health authorities.
Here, WWD compiles the ways that fashion designers and brands are pitching in to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brandon Maxwell’s team is researching the appropriate medical textiles to make gowns for hospital doctors and nurses treating COVID-19 patients. He also aims to create medical grade masks and gloves as more information on manufacturing these supplies becomes available.

Wrangler, Opening Ceremony to Create ‘Value’ Capsule Collection

It ain’t just for cowboys anymore.
Wrangler, a brand created initially for the professional rodeo cowboy, is now cozying up to the high-fashion community.
Last month, the brand opened a six-week-long pop-up at Fred Segal’s Los Angeles flagship to showcase a capsule collection of modern interpretations of archival pieces from four pivotal times in its history: 1919 as well as the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties.
Now it is partnering with Opening Ceremony on a reinterpretation of some of its key products from the Eighties and Nineties. Called Value, the collection includes oversize cargo pants, wide-leg jeans and graphic Ts in heavyweight fabrics. There are also checked shirts, hooded popper jackets with retro colorblocking and boxy jeans with zip-off legs.
The collection’s name is a nod to the mass merchants that sold the original versions of the pieces. But the new Value collection, which is made from all organic cotton, has more of a street style vibe and is being produced in limited quantities. The collection is being sold exclusively at Opening Ceremony stores and on its web site beginning Thursday. The collection will range in price from $ 40 for a T-shirt and $ 70 for a rugby shirt to $ 140 for a zippered jacket.

Kate Winslet and Galvin Scott Davis Create a Beautiful Daisy Chain

Novelist Theodore Dreiser once said “Art is the stored honey of the human soul, gathered on wings of misery and travail.” Galvin Scott Davis’ timeless new film, Daisy Chain, a five minute animated short narrated by Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet, was born from misery and travail, and is the most stirring recent example of art communicating the subject of anti-bullying. Appropriately, the Tim Burton-esque, hand-drawn Daisy Chain has been released during National Bullying Prevention Month, and in its first week has been downloaded 100,000 times. Proof that art is often the best way to speak to the masses.

Daisy Chain (Courtesy of Screen Australia)

Daisy Chain was created by Australian writer/director Galvin Scott Davis after his nine year old son was bullied. He told his son “Bullying is for people with no imagination.” Davis’ son invited the bully, both comic book fans, to create a comic book with him and a friendship grew. A passionate storyteller (as well as director of Sydney-based digital media firm, http://www.protein-one.com/) Davis began developing Dandelion, an anti-bullying children’s book and app that went on to become a top-seller on iTunes, and winner of several awards. Davis then teamed up with Screen Australia to create the whimsical Daisy Chain, about a little girl named Buttercup bullied by older girls in a playground.

Davis’ chance meeting with actress Kate Winslet on the set of 1996’s film Hamlet planted a seed that nearly twenty years later grew into a beautiful collaboration.

Davis says

We were both being costumed for Hamlet and Kate had asked if I wanted a career as an actor. I said, ‘I want to tell stories. I want to write and direct.’ Then she said, ‘If I have one piece of advice I can give you, it’s to never give up.’

Winslet was Davis’ first and only choice to narrate Daisy Chain, and he even put the project on hold for a full year until she was available. Because as he notes “there was no better voice.”

His patience paid off. When Winslet read about the project, it spoke to her as a mother. The actress has also admitted that bullies made fun of her appearance growing up. As an adult, she has made it her mission to help build self-confidence in others. Davis was right. There was no better voice for Daisy Chain.

A moment from Daisy Chain (Courtesy of Screen Australia)
2015-10-29-1446089089-4477497-daisychain.png

Davis says the hope is to see Daisy Chain (which is now also an illustrated children’s book, App, and character figurines) grow into an animated feature film in the vein of Coraline. A percentage of the proceeds from the Daisy Chain products are split between three international anti-bullying organizations: U.S. based Pacer, Bully Zero Australia Foundation and the U.K’s Anti-Bullying Alliance.

Daisy Chain’s animation was orchestrated by Frederick Venet, illustrations by Anthony Ishinjerro, and music composed by Hylton Mowday.

How to Create a Fall Floral Arrangement With Foraged Foliage

floral arrangements

Fall foliage is now in its prime. Dahlias, bittersweet berries, and crabapple branches in shades of orange and crimson are abundant and may even be growing in your own backyard. Rather than taking a trip to the flower market, foraging can be a wonderful way to create unique and fresh floral arrangements showcasing berries and shrubs that may otherwise go unnoticed. “Oftentimes, the best foraging can be on the side of any road or highway,” says potter Frances Palmer of Frances Palmer Pottery. Earlier this month, Palmer teamed up with florists Michael and Darroch Putnam of Putnam & Putnam for an afternoon of foraging at her Connecticut home. There they collected bunches of ripe blooms and rustic branches to create whimsical Secret Garden–esque arrangements in Palmer’s signature white vases. Here, Palmer and Darroch Putnam offer tips and tricks for transforming foraged finds into effortless, woodsy centerpiece arrangements.

What types of flowers and berries work best for fall floral arrangements?
Frances Palmer:
The flowers that are abundant in my garden in the fall are dahlias, nicotiana, zinnias, roses, cosmos, scabiosa, sage, and amaranth. Porcelain and bittersweet berries grow nearby, and rose hips as well. I use fruit branches such as raspberry, crabapple, fig, grape, and apple. Then come the quince and persimmon fruit and branches, which are also gorgeous. I like vegetables and herbs like tomatoes, string beans, chard, fennel, mint, basil, and nasturtiums.

Darroch Putnam: Fall is an exciting time for flowers! Dahlias are at their peak. Other wonderful fall flowers are Japanese anemones (also called autumn anemones), amaranth, zinnias, and celosia. When arranging with fruit, pomegranates, apples, persimmons, and grapes are all in season and fun to work with.

What combination of florals, greenery, and branches create the best effect?
FP:
I tend to think of flower arrangements by color. I take different types and sizes of flowers and branches and put them together to make a profusion of orange, pink, or red. I’ll pick branches that will support the flowers in the vessel and give an underlay of the dominant color.

DP: When making an arrangement, you should start with base foliage: Choose something with an interesting shape and color. Then find a focal flower that pulls in a color found in the branch. A great combination for the fall is plum branches and chocolate dahlias. You could also bring in other elements with a similar palette—a burgundy trailing amaranth and pomegranates would look beautiful.

What are crucial tools to have on hand when foraging and making the arrangements?
FP: For foraging, I always carry clippers in my car or bring them with me on my daily walk with my dog, Peter. For flower arrangements, I use the clippers and the foraged branches, which function as the support system in the vase or bowl for the arrangement.

DP: When foraging, always wear pants, long sleeves, and gloves. There are many plants that can irritate the skin when touched, as well an abundance of thorn-covered vines and branches. Also bring a bucket or canvas drop cloth to put your found materials in, small floral clippers, extending loppers, and waterproof shoes.

What types of vessels do you like to use?
FP: I am a potter and make many shapes of vases and footed bowls. Just as I think of the flower arrangements in terms of color, I select the vessel by glaze to echo the tones of the flowers.

DP: We always lean toward a footed bowl or compote. The wide opening and shallow base is easiest to achieve a low, wide arrangement.

Do you find particular flowers while foraging that may not be available in flower markets?
FP: I don’t go to the New York flower markets often to compare, but when a foraged flower is cut fresh, it is at its best. This summer I was working with joe-pye weed, goldenrod, jewelweed, Queen Anne’s lace, yellow primrose, clover, milkweed, chicory, aster, rose hip, and grapevine. Not pokeweed, as that is toxic.

DP: Finding flowers while foraging can be tricky. Many types of wildflowers wilt immediately when cut. That being said, there are many fun flowers like goldenseal, milkweed, and Queen Anne’s lace that are in abundance in the Northeast.

For city dwellers who don’t have access to fields of wildflowers and berries, where would you recommend to forage? Are there any hidden foraging gems nearby?
FP: Oftentimes, the best foraging can be on the side of any road or highway. For example, I always contend that the best lilacs are on the side of a highway. If you are going onto someone’s property or into a park or preserve, it is optimal to get permission first.

DP: Foraging can be tricky because you often need a permit to cut in state parks. We often find fun stuff growing on the side of country roads in upstate New York. Just be weary of traffic and never pull over on busy highways. The best option is to forage on friends’ and family’s property if you have that option available.

Old Amber Rose Ustream Video Used To Create Prostitution Ring [VIDEO]

Amber Rose is one sexy vixen and apparently a band of perverse lowlives took advantage of her attributes by attempting to create a prostitution ring using one of her old Ustream videos as bait.

Reports TMZ:

TMZ has learned, the LAPD is now investigating a company that was soliciting models “for a paid celebrity photoshoot and clothing line.”

Aspiring models who contacted the company after seeing an Instagram ad were then told Amber Rose was a key person in picking the models.

The company — which was allegedly trying to lure the models into prostitution — enticed them by setting up what they called a FaceTime session with Amber.

When the models called in, they saw Amber struggling with a bad connection, that eventually failed. What the models didn’t know … the company took an old video from Amber’s Ustream and made it look like she was actually on the phone.

Eventually the company told the models they would be set up “on dates with rich guy,” with a catch. The company would text the model, asking if they would be willing to be intimate. If so, it would help them get bigger projects, and working with Amber might help them.

One of the models went to LAPD Monday and filed a police report, claiming the company was trying to rope her into a prostitution ring. The LAPD is investigating.

Amber herself addressed the failed prostitution ring and gave credit, even when she probably shouldn’t have.

Media Coverage of Donald Trump Will Create Temporal Stupid Loop That Could Destroy Earth

Scientists warn that media coverage of Republican presidential contender Donald Trump is creating a temporal loop that could potentially destroy the Earth. “The endless reporting of every jackass utterance from Mr. Trump is building what we call a ‘serious-stupid temporal-political convolution’,” says Dr. Sander Von Gelding from the Institute of Dimensional Studies and Sports Apparel (IDSSA). “Journalists, by deliberately giving Mr. Trump air time for each stupid thing he says and justifying it even though they believe he is not a serious candidate, build a continuous serious-stupid feedback which could threaten our political equilibrium, which is precariously stupid enough as it is.”

Von Gelding went on to explain:

Let’s say Mr. Trump holds a press conference in which he announces that, if elected President, he will build a giant laser to fire at Mars because it is sending rapists to Earth to probe us. Media analysts run that announcement, aware of its stupidity, while salivating over ratings it will bring, like the serious drooling dogs they are. Trump responds by insisting Mars will pay for the giant laser. Media analysts respond to Trump’s stupid response, which converts the stupid energy of the original press conference into an equal amount of serious energy, since the media coverage now exists as proof of the original press conference’s serious intent, stupid as it was. Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and other Republican candidates follow with their own seriously stupid responses. Soon, the level of serious stupidity increases exponentially until all reality is subsumed by stupidity, Trump has nothing more to say, or we all die, whichever comes first.

Following the IDSSA’s warning, Donald Trump announced he will, indeed, build a giant laser to fire at Mars, claiming, “Ford Motor Company has plans to build a new plant on Mars and take away thousands of jobs on Earth. I’m the only candidate who won’t let that happen.” An apologetic Dr. Von Gelding responded, “Please disregard everything thing I said. Seriously.”

After Marriage Equality, What Will We Create Next?

After Obergefell v. Hodges, the first decision from the Supreme Court of the United States that broadly affirms the lives of lesbian and gay people and provides us with vital recognition for our intimate relationships, many national organizations and leaders quickly pivoted from marriage equality to workplace and public accommodation protections. The stark reality that a gay or lesbian person could marry in the morning, be fired in the afternoon and evicted from an apartment or restaurant in the evening, echoed across my screen as people shared these messages on social media.

I support federal legislation to protect LGBT people at work and in public, of course, and I recognize how crucial federal legislation is for people who do not live in states or cities that already provide these protections. At the same time, I want time to take a deep breath and savor marriage equality before moving to the next national issue.

The struggle to recognize loving, committed relationships of same-sex partners has been a long struggle. While Justice Scalia’s words in the Lawrence v. Texas dissent in 2003 portended this victory in 2015, gay men and lesbians have been talking about relationship recognition for decades. Before Genora Dancel and Ninia Baehr in Hawaii, there was Jack Baker and Michael McConnell in Minnesota; before them, there were discussions about marriage in The Ladder and One Magazine, and before that, there were other gay men and lesbians thinking about how their relationships could be recognized in the worlds where they lived. Lesbians and gay men have imagined the day when they could be fully, completely, and legally married for a long time–decades, even centuries. Savoring the decision honors the work and dreams of those who came before us.

Savoring the decision also gives us space and time to recognize the importance of imagination and creativity in our movements for social change. How do we create and promote communities that value imagination and creativity? How do we nurture the minds and spirits of people who help us imagine a different world and defy the conventions of the day to envision this new world and take steps to create it? How do we affirm the significance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender creative production? In particular, how do we carve out space for queer creativity amid increasing mainstreaming of LGBT people and identities? Thinking about and answering these questions is as urgent as workplace and public accommodation protections. Without imagination and creativity, our community cannot envision the changes we want to see. From our creativity, from our imagination, come the visions of the worlds we might create.

Imagination transforms worlds. Nurturing imagination and creativity is crucial. What can we do to nurture LGBTQ imaginations? How can we envision worlds where LGBTQ people can live and thrive? Considering these questions and answering these questions are an important part of our political worlds today. The imagination of a world transformed, the imagination of a world with marriage equality helped to create the world that we have today. How can we ensure that imagination and creativity are a part of the forefront of LGBTQ communities as we move forward?

Yes, attorneys and legal strategists were crucial to marriage equality. Yes, we need political strategies to win new federal, state, and local victories that make the daily lives of lesbians, gay men, bisexual, and transgender people better. We also need transformative imaginative capacities in our community. I want to hold space for creativity and imagination in our new world where organizations and individuals reorganize their priorities after marriage equality.

My greatest hope is that new resources will flow to organizations that build and celebrate LGBT culture in the aftermath of marriage equality. Tending to our culture, building on the rich and vibrant cultural tradition of LGBTQ communities, promoting queer creativity and imagination is for me an opportunity for LGBTQ people in this new world of marriage equality.

British Designers Create Chairs for Selfridges Charity Initiative

CHAIR-ITABLE CAUSE: Selfridges has collaborated with The Art Room, a charity supported by the Duchess of Cambridge, on a collection of 90 chairs by artists and designers including Tom Dixon, Paul Smith, Hervé Léger, Alice Temperley, Lulu Guinness, Charlotte Olympia, Hannah Weiland of Shrimps and Cara Delevingne.
Arts consultant Flora Fairbairn and her team gave each designer a chair to design – without a specific brief. “We approached at least 250 people,” said Fairbairn, co-founder of Fair & Co., an arts consultancy firm,  It was a very short time frame. I think we started in March. We gave them the chair, and then we told them to bear in mind that people will be looking up at the chair, so you gotta take that into account. It is really exciting to see the result because they are so varied, because obviously they are all the same chair.”

Meek Mill & Spike Jordan Create A Golden Age Classic With “Monster” Video

If you follow Meek Mill on Instagram, you know very well he’s paid in full. With his new school sensibilities and Spike Jordan’s nostalgic direction, a beautiful master plan video for “Monster” has been born.

After strategically dropping track since his release from jail last December, it appears Philly’s MMG lieutenant is finally revved up and ready to make those Dreams Worth More Than Money an official reality. He recently paid homage to the slain Chinx and measured his weight up next to Drake’s and the “Monster” video proves he’s just having fun with it.

The scenery takes us into late 80s when Hip-Hop was automatically fresh and exciting and all the Big Willies donned Kangol hats, Gazelle frames and enough gold to make King Tut insecure. Aspiring Teen Model Challenges Society’s Stereotypes Of Down Syndrome: ‘Exposure Will Create Acceptance’

Madeline Stuart is an 18-year-old aspiring model, and she’s here to challenge society’s rigid definition of what “beautiful” is.

Thank you for your support, please share my page and invite your friends to like it. I love you all xx

Posted by Madeline getting Downs to modelling on Friday, May 8, 2015

Madeline, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, has Down syndrome. She writes on her Facebook page that she believes “modeling will help change [society’s] view of people with Down syndrome.”

“Exposure will help to create acceptance,” she says.

According to WPVI-TV, Madeline struggled with her weight as a youngster. Thanks to healthy eating and exercise, the teen lost 45 pounds. Madeline now dances, swims and does gymnastics and cheerleading.

Madeline’s mom, Rosanne Stuart, said she hopes her daughter will inspire other individuals with Down syndrome to make similarly positive lifestyle choices. Studies have suggested that children with Down syndrome are more prone to be overweight.

“People with Down syndrome can do anything,” Stuart told Buzzfeed. “They just do it at their own pace. Give them a chance and you will be rewarded beyond your greatest expectations.”

“I think it is time people realized that people with Down syndrome can be sexy and beautiful and should be celebrated,” she added.

Earlier this year, actress Jamie Brewer became the first person with Down syndrome to ever walk the runway at New York Fashion Week.

According to Buzzfeed, Madeline — who is already landing modeling gigs — is currently looking for an agent.

In the meantime, the teen is winning the Interwebs. She has more than 150,000 Facebook fans so far.

“I am so happy and blessed,” Madeline wrote on Facebook Monday as her story went viral. “So happy that everyone is sharing the love,” she said in a later post.

Yasiin Bey refuses to be boxed into any rigid lines his fans may unwittingly try keep him in. The artist formerly known as the Mighty Mos Def recently detailed why he left the United States.

In an interview with Beat By Dre, Bey explained why you’ll rarely spot him back in his BK stomping grounds—and why that has helped his music.

“It’s really…America is a very challenging place for me,” he said. “Sure, there’s great business opportunities and familiarity and all of that, but given the current social, political, economic climate, it is very difficult—unnecessarily difficult—to create to the degree of fullness…the type of robust, the type of creativity that I like to have, it is very difficult for me to produce right here.”

Bey went on to say he is critical of all the governments in the world, and the corporations.

Check out the enlightening interview below. This is where we put our wish for a new Black Star album out into the universie, hoping that it someday happens.

Aerie And Gray Malin Team Up To Create The World’s Biggest ‘Unretouched Selfie’

Move over, Kim Kardashian. You just got out-selfied.

American Eagle, Aerie and famed photographer Gray Malin recruited over 1,000 women, including Mae Whitman and DJ/lifestyle guru Hannah Bronfman, in an attempt to create a record-breaking “world’s largest unretouched selfie” Saturday in Miami Beach. Each participant is wearing clothing emblazoned with #AerieREAL, the brand’s mantra. While the photo was snapped on the ground, Malin simultaneously captured the moment from a helicopter.

The photo falls in line with Aerie’s dedication to ditching Photoshop, celebrating natural beauty and empowering women to be real.

Aerie has continually pushed its message through ad campaigns. This event symbolizes not only a shift toward inclusion in the fashion industry, but also the impact deciding to go sans Photoshop has had on consumers. Jenny Altman, fit and style expert for Aerie, explains:

What better way to make a statement about self expression than taking a selfie? We are so excited to host an iconic pop cultural moment, influencing women around the world to love themselves even when they are the most exposed — in a swimsuit. This photo is a celebration of the change that has happened in the fashion industry and society in general. Girls are strong and confident, whatever their shape, size or style.
