Love and loyalty. Betrayal and murder. What is the cost of a crown? In 1290, Scotland is without a king. Two families – the Bruces and the Balliols – vie for the throne. Robert the Bruce is in love with Elizabeth de Burgh, the daughter of an adherent of the ruthless Longshanks, King of England. In order to marry her and not give up his chances of someday becoming King of Scots, Robert must abandon his rebel ways and bide his time as Longshanks' vassal. But Edward, Longshanks' heir, doesn't trust the opportunistic Scotsman and vows to one day destroy him. While quietly plotting his rebellion, Robert is betrayed by one of his own and must flee Longshanks' vengeance. Aided by the unlikely brilliance of the soft-spoken young nobleman, James Douglas, Robert battles for his throne. Victory, though, is never certain and Robert soon learns that keeping his crown may mean giving up that which he loves most-his beloved Elizabeth.

The first Seamaster appeared in 1948, originally as a dress watch with limited water resistance. By the late 1950s, however, Omega had transformed the Seamaster line into full-blown dive watches capable of operating in the ocean. They became favorites of notable watermen including Jacques Cousteau and COMEX divers. Fast forward a few decades, and the Seamaster gained a renewed burst of popularity when it was featured in the movie GoldenEye in 1995. Seamasters have appeared in several James Bond films since then, which further cemented the watch’s reputation as a tough, dependepable, and incredibly stylish timepiece.

With its durable automatic movement, bold 42mm stainless steel case, black ceramic bezel, and distinctive “wave pattern” dial, the Seamaster up for grabs in this sweepstakes perfectly exemplifies the trusted design and timeless style these watches are known for. It’s no surprise that the Seamaster is 007’s pick, and now it can be yours, too. Check out the video above for more info on the giveaway, and then head over to Crown & Caliber to enter today.

If you’d rather not leave it up to chance, you can also browse other Seamaster watches on sale at Crown & Caliber. And no matter what timepiece you’re looking for, you can count on C&C’s trusted advice and data-driven approach to help you find the perfect match.

Breitling and Crown & Caliber Just Made It Easier for You to Get a New Luxury Watch

Getting tired of your usual watch? Now you can trade it in for a brand-new Breitling. The esteemed Swiss watchmaker has partnered with Crown & Caliber, the online retailer which lets you buy and sell pre-owned luxury watches, to launch an online platform where you can trade in your luxury watch and receive credit towards the purchase of a Breitling timepiece. That makes Breitling the first major Swiss watchmaker to accept pre-owned watches for a new model. The platform is now live, and you can access it on the Breitling website.

Here's the Versatile, Rugged Watch John Krasinski's Wearing in 'Jack Ryan' Season 2

“In the industry there was a lot of talk about the secondary market,” Thierry Prissert, Breitling USA President, told Men’s Journal. “We needed to embrace it in a way that satisfies our customers.”

Trading Up

With the launch of the platform, Breitling has entered into the booming pre-owned watch market—by some estimates, a $ 17-$ 20 billion industry—in a big way, although Crown & Caliber handles the process of appraising the timepieces. The companies first crossed paths at Baselworld, the watch and jewelry trade show, a few years ago, but began to work on the new platform in earnest starting last year.

For Prissert, working with an established partner like Crown & Caliber was the best way for Breitling to get into the secondary market. C&C already handles sales of many pre-owned Breitling watches and has a reputation for selling high-quality timepieces. But the company’s knowledge of watch sales was a big draw, too. Since its launch in 2013, C&C has processed over 40,000 transactions and built a massive database in the process, including not only how much certain watches sell for, but also how long they’re on the market.

“Virtually any watch that we see,” Hamilton Powell, CEO and Founder of Crown & Caliber, told Men’s Journal, “we will have historical sales pricing on.”

“That was the convincing factor,” Prissert said, adding that the partnership saved Breitling from having to figure out the pre-owned watch market from scratch. As any watch aficionado will tell you, it can be a difficult arena to navigate—shady sellers and fake watches abound. That makes established, legitimate retailers like C&C all the more valuable.

breitling
The The Breitling Super Avenger Chronograph 48 Night Mission Courtesy of Breitling

The new launch comes at an exciting time for Breitling. The company revamped its website last year and only recently began selling some of its watches online. The goal with these new initiatives is to give watch buyers more options in how they find and purchase a timepiece, Prissert said.

With trade-ins specifically, both Powell and Prissert view the new platform as a way to catch up with other industries that have long accepted trades to knock down the price of a new product. If you want to buy a new Mercedes, for example, you trade in your current ride and get a better deal. Now you can do the same with the watch sitting in your drawer.

“We wanted to be able to offer customers the same optionality that’s existed in other industries,” Powell says.

With trade-ins, Prissert also sees an opportunity to make Breitling more accessible for people who are looking to put something new on their wrist, but might balk at a several-thousand-dollar price tag.

“It’s also to open the brand to new people that would be very much helped by a good gift certificate credit amount,” he said.

Of course, you already have to be sitting on a pretty nice watch in order to really bring the price down. But if do you have a quality model, a trade-in is a good way to try out something new, and doing it through Breitling ensures a relatively seamless transaction.

This Limited-Edition Omega Seamaster Diver Watch Celebrates an Iconic James Bond Film

How It Works

For someone ready to upgrade, the process is simple enough. Head to Breitling’s trade-in page and choose your watch’s brand from a dropdown menu (the company currently accepts over 30 different brands). Then, fill out a form, upload some images of your timepiece, and submit it. The information goes to Crown & Caliber, where experts review the form and assess the value of your watch using the company’s database. Based on the condition of your ticker and how others like it have sold, the company generates a quote and replies to your submission in one business day.

If you accept it, you’ll get a shipping label to mail your watch to C&C’s processing facility in Atlanta, and once it’s received, you’ll get confirmation of the offer. From there, you can either have the company cut you a check for the value of the watch, or you can get a voucher towards the purchase of a new Breitling model.

Take note: There’s also a sweetener if you choose the voucher. According to Powell and Prissert, Breitling will add a premium on top of your watch’s quoted value if you opt for store credit. Although they wouldn’t provide specifics, Powell said it’s “a meaningful percentage,” of the quote. Try making that happen with your local Mercedes dealer.

New Watches to Look Out for Right Now

With several new watches debuting this fall, now’s a great time to get your hands on a Breitling. Here are the details on our favorites.

The Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown Courtesy of Breitling

Unveiled at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, the Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown is a collaboration between the watchmaker and Slater’s apparel company, Outerknown. It’s an update of Breitling’s classic Superocean dive watch, which was first released in 1957. It comes with a 44-millimeter stainless-steel case and a ratcheted unidirectional bezel—a key feature that allows divers to time their dives accurately. It has a green dial and the hands, numerals, and indexes have a luminescent coating for easy reading in low-light conditions. The launch also included a new Econyl strap made from recycled nylon that will work with any Breitling timepeice, and the strap comes in a range of colors for a rugged look that can match any outfit.

The new Avenger collection launched in September, and these watches are built to the highest standards of reliability and durability and come with some serious performance chops built-in. We like the Super Avenger Chronograph 48 Night Mission, which features a tough, shock-resistant 48-millimeter titanium case that’s designed for use even while wearing gloves. The blue dial’s large numerals are inspired by the stenciled numbers on aircraft carriers, and they’re coated with a luminescent film to make them easy to read no matter where you are. A blue leather strap secures this bold military-inspired watch to your wrist.

breitling
The Aviator 8 Mosquito Courtesy of Breitling

This watch is packed with aviation history. We’ll start with the name: It’s a reference to the de Havilland Mosquito, a legendary WWII-era British warplane made almost entirely from wood. Design-wise, the Aviator 8 is also a nod to the on-board clocks that Breitling designed for planes back in the 1930s and 1940s and the company’s famed Co-Pilot watch, which was beloved by aviators for its large, easy-to-read numerals. The watch is powered by a Caliber 01 movement made in-house at Breitling, and it comes with a brushed stainless-steel bezel over a handsome black dial with silver chronograph counters. The red and orange accents on the hands add a pop of color, and there’s some history behind them, too: The colors are inspired by the military roundels painted on Mosquitos during the war.

5 Cool Things You Need to Know About Crown & Caliber

Crown & Caliber founder Hamilton Powell came up with the idea of a creating a trustworthy online wristwatch marketplace when listening to a friend complain about trying to sell a Patek Philippe Gondolo. That friend’s options were limited to eBay, Craigslist or, the option he went with, the local pawnshop.

The watch was sold to the pawnshop for $ 5,200, but when the friend walked back through the doors a few weeks later, he noticed the price tag said $ 12,500. Ouch. The fact is, before Crown & Caliber came onto the scene, the business of buying used luxury watches was one seemingly destined to stay fraught with uncertainty. On the authenticity side, even high-profile buyers have admittedly been taken advantage of in the shadowy world of fake Rolexes.

Since launching its website five years ago, the company has helped thousands find the piece of their dreams and sleep soundly in the process, all while building a cool community of collectors. Here’s everything you need to know.

IT EMPLOYS A TEAM OF SWISS-TRAINED WATCHMAKERS

Once a watch comes through the doors of the Atlanta headquarters, it gets fully inspected by a team of classically trained watchmakers, technicians, and refinishers. The kind of people who love watches so much they would be tinkering with timepieces even if they weren’t getting paid for it. This team of specialists makes sure that each outgoing product is operating to their Swiss-certified standards, is made of authentic parts and, of course, keeps accurate time.

ITS INSTAGRAM WILL SERIOUSLY UPGRADE YOUR FEED

Our social media feed is always in need for more mechanics and less bad food photos, which makes @crownandcaliber an easy click. Expect plenty of desirable wrist candy like the Rolex GMT-Master II “Pepsi” or the OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra. Not only that, but they also do a great job of spotlighting iconic watch lovers with their favorite pieces, like Buzz Aldrin with his OMEGA Speedmaster or Steve McQueen with his Tag Heuer Monaco.

IT PRODUCES A SLICK SERIES CALLED “WATCH STORIES”

The artful docu-series profiles people within the diverse watch community, from sportscar racers to auction house heads to chefs, and goes in-depth on the moments and pieces that define them as collectors. Their latest is with renaissance gentleman and Crown & Caliber ambassador Spike Feresten, who hosts one of the most popular automotive podcasts Spike’s Car Radio for Podcast One. Feresten wrote for fellow car enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld on the hit sitcom Seinfeld, and like his old boss he has the kind of car collection that will make any red-blooded man drool. Not to mention a watch collection to match, stocked with racing brands like Rolexes, Tag Heuers, and Tudors.

IT EVEN OFFERS COOL ACCESSORIES BEYOND TIMEPIECES

For most men, spreading your regular watches out on the bureau for selection is a perfectly passable way to display them. But if you are a Crown & Caliber kind of guy, you may be looking for a slightly more elevated presentation. Luckily it also offers watch boxes, cases, and winders from luxury designers WOLF. Family-owned since it was founded in the 1800s, the team designs the products to be passed down generations, just like your watches.

THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERY RANGE OF COLLECTOR

Whether you are a young professional looking for your first statement piece, or a seasoned collector, there is something for you on Crown & Caliber. The selection features over 40 brands, including signature pieces like the Cartier Tank Francaise, inspired by the French Army’s Renault FT-17 Army Tanks, and the Panerai Radiomir Black Seal. For those in search of their “grail watch”, you may want to check in on the regular; currently a like-new IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater Limited Edition can be snagged for $ 50,000. Looking to treat yourself? Pour a scotch and set aside some time to click through over 2000 timepieces. Better make it a double.

Compton Looks To Crown An Impressive List Of Dr. Dre Produced Albums [Photos]

Fans and peers alike universally agree that Dr. Dre is the best Hip-Hop producer to ever do it. From his early beginnings as hands-on sound with N.W.A and Death Row Records to his subsequent maestro position in the later years, so many artists have won powered by his guidance and at the least, released the best music of their careers. (We’re looking at you, Truth Hurts.)

Now that the word is out that his first album in 16 years, Compton (also known as Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre) will be released this Friday, the bar has been set extremely high because he designed it that way.

Busta’s Big Bang Comeback

Busta Rhymes hopped on the Aftermath train in 2005 and thankfully wasn’t shelved like his latest stint with Cash Money Records. After the hit single “Touch It” blazed the winter and summer, The Big Bang solidified its place near the top of the Dungeon Dragon’s discography, all under the tutelage of The Good Doctor.

Has a Horse Ever Won the Triple Crown in Baseball?

Horse racing represents the two things I hate most: animal abuse and rich white people celebrating.

Nevertheless, congratulations to American Pharoah on winning the equestrian Triple Crown. Animal athletics represent what is pure and good about sports. Unlike the fame-driven phonies who play professional football and basketball and baseball, animal athletes are not guided by money or ego or even a basic comprehension that they’re competing in a sporting event.

Literally the moment the Belmont Stakes ended, American Pharoah had already forgotten that an important race had just taken place. And five minutes later, the rest of America forgot that an important race had just taken place.

The worse thing that could’ve happened to the sport of horse racing, thirty-seven years later, was for a horse to actually win the Triple Crown. The build-up was suspenseful and spectacular. The actual moment was like, “Eh. Now what?” Sort of like Christmas morning or airplane bathroom sex.

But unlike Christmas and- too a lesser extent, sex- horse racing is horrible.

Baseball is just as boring as horse racing. But unlike the Kentucky Derby, if Miguel Cabrera breaks his ankle running to second base, the trainers don’t come out to the field and shoot him. I mean, even North Korea waits for spectators to leave the stadium before killing its underperforming athletes.

To watch a prestigious horse race is not the equivalent of watching the NBA Finals. Rather, it’s like viewing those adorable cat videos on YouTube. That’s because- and I say this in a complimentary way, actually- horses are animals.

1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat ranked #35 on ESPN’s list of Greatest American Athletes of the 20th Century, ahead of sports legends such as Mickey Mantle, Lawrence Taylor, and Olympian Eric Heiden. Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax was #42 on the list, which, by definition, means he would’ve been #41 on a list of Greatest American Human Athletes of the 20th Century.

Interesting to note that famous horse racing jockey Bill Shoemaker was #57 on the list. Shoemaker ranks lower than the horses. Auto racing’s Mario Andretti was #92. But yet Andretti’s car is not on the list. That’s because a car is not an athlete. And that’s because a car, like a horse, is not a human being.

The fastest kitchen table in America might be the fastest kitchen table in America. Doesn’t make it an “athlete.” And I don’t know what you call it when kitchen tables ski jump, but I know it’s not “sports.”

As a matter of fact, three horses placed on ESPN’s list of Greatest American Athletes of the 20th Century. Somewhere a javelin-throwing panda bear, not on the list, is thinking, “I was snubbed.”

To describe a horse as an “athlete” is insane. Even weirder is to label it an American athlete. Are horses granted citizenship? I never really thought of animals as having a nationality, though I’m aware of the Republican Party’s insistence on building a giant fence around our border to keep out illegal Chihuahuas.

When talking about horse racing, sports pundits speak of the elite horses as having “a lot of heart” or a will to win. But I bet the horses also run fast because they’re being whipped.

And why horse racing? Why not, say, guinea pig racing? That horses are fast is not a logical rationale. Hippopotamuses run twenty miles per hour. Hippos are fast. No, they’re not as fast as horses. But other animals are. Explain to me why the Preakness is a legitimate sporting event, but put ten cheetahs on a track and it’s a sideshow?

Horse athletes are forced to compete. Human being athletes have a choice… I mean, unless you’re one of Archie Manning’s kids. Human being athletes do it for the fame and the glory. Horses do it for the food. When a human being athlete is unsuccessful, he is cut from the team. When a horse athlete is unsuccessful, he is cut into meat.

When a human athlete’s career is over, he or she usually gets a job in broadcasting or they make a living signing autographs or going on Dancing with the Stars. When a horse’s racing career is over, it usually gets eaten… which, to be fair, is slightly less degrading than going on Dancing with the Stars.

Let’s get real. Let’s call this what it is. Horse racing is not a “sport.” It’s gambling– no different than blackjack or the lottery or getting into a car when Lindsay Lohan is at the wheel.

But it’s 2015. We don’t need horses for gambling anymore. Hell, people don’t care what they’re betting on, as long as they’re betting. Every year during the Super Bowl, literally hundreds of thousands of dollars are waged on the opening coin flip! The freakin’ coin flip! (My free tip for next year’s big game? Tails.) The Breeder’s Cup wouldn’t be any less popular if they raced computerized robot unicorns, just as long as people can still play the trifecta.

It’s time to put horse racing out to pasture. It’s time. And don’t feel too bad for the rich white owners with the funny hats who look so happy when their horses win the big race. Even without horse racing, those people will still be happy because they’ll still be rich.

American Voices: Triple Crown Won For First Time In 37 Years

Nearly four decades after Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, a 3-year-old colt named American Pharoah won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday to become the 12th horse in history to sweep thoroughbred horse racing’s top three events. What do you think?

News in Brief: Owner Tearfully Releases American Pharoah After Triple Crown Win

ELMONT, NY—Overcome with emotion as he described how much he’d miss his “old friend,” the owner of Triple Crown–winner American Pharoah bid a tearful farewell to the colt Monday before granting the horse its freedom, sources confirmed. “You’ve done more than I could have asked, and now you’re free to roam and run wherever you please,” said the horse’s owner, Ahmed Zayat, who, following American Pharoah’s victory in the Belmont Stakes, is said to have transported the 3-year-old colt deep into the country near a forest clearing, removed its saddle, and given the animal one last kiss on the forehead before setting it free. “Nobody believed you could win all three, but you did it—you did it, American Pharoah!—and you earned your freedom. Wherever you go now and whatever you choose to do, just know that I’ll never forget you …

With ‘Welcome To Me,’ Kristen Wiig Dons Her Newfound Indie Crown

“Saturday Night Live” alumni tend to form predictable career paths: They star in broad comedies that double as extensions of their work on the series, then attempt to wow us with an off-kilter dramatic performance that confirms they’re worth more than sketch-show idiosyncrasies. Some forge their own paths in television (see: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jimmy Fallon), but most linger in the admittedly fruitful shadow of the famous words “live from New York.”

Kristen Wiig, on the other hand, has been quietly breaking with her “SNL” heritage since exiting the show in 2012, and this year offers a trifecta of films in which the she not only masters dramatic roles — she is a marvel in them.

First up is “Welcome to Me,” which opened in select theaters this weekend and expands nationwide on May 8. Wiig’s best role since “Bridesmaids,” the film casts her as Alice Klieg, an Oprah-obsessed hermit with borderline personality disorder who uses her $ 86 million lottery winnings to fund her own daytime talk show. Its topics, all of which revolve around Alice, are very un-Oprah-like. Instead of finding “aha moments,” Alice devours an entire piece of homemade meatloaf cake (after discussing its “carbohydrant” quantity), reenacts melodramatic moments from her adolescence and neuters dogs on live television. That description sounds like one long “SNL” sketch, and parts of “Welcome to Me” very well could have been. But that’s what makes the movie a perfect interlude in Wiig’s career: The accessories of her broad-comedy background are intact, but what resounds is a heartfelt character study that never reduces Alice’s mental condition to a punch line.

Clockwise: “Welcome to Me,” “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” and “Nasty Baby”

Wiig, whose participation in movies like Paul Feig’s female-centered “Ghostbusters” reboot indicate she hasn’t abandoned big-budget comedies, does not think of her indie-film trajectory as strategic. In fact, while discussing “Welcome to Me” earlier this week, Wiig told The Huffington Post that she receives fewer “SNL”-esque scripts than one might imagine. There’s a misperception, then, that her dramatic parts — which have recently included “Hateship, Loveship” and “The Skeleton Twins” — mean she is drifting away from the comedic realm. “It’s just the timing of it,” she promised.

Still, by the end of 2015, audiences will have a fuller interpretation of Wiig’s range. In August, the ’70s-set “Diary of a Teenage Girl,” based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel of the same name, will arrive with almost no “SNL” trappings whatsoever. One of this year’s Sundance Film Festival standouts, the dramedy finds Wiig playing Charlotte Worthington, a self-absorbed Patty Heast obsessive glued to the halcyon hippie days that have just passed her by. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgård) is having an affair with her dumpy teenage daughter (Bel Powley). Powley is at the film’s center, but Wiig’s performance is her most dynamic work yet. In Charlotte, she captures both the anger and idealism that boiled beneath 1974 San Francisco as it reeled from Watergate and the Vietnam War.

Also due out in the near future is “Nasty Baby,” an even smaller-scale indie about a gay couple in Brooklyn (Sebastián Silva and Tunde Adebimpe) attempting to have a baby with their close friend. A down-to-earth Wiig portrays said friend in the movie, which begins mostly as a comedy before its third act takes a swift dive into thriller territory.

After premiering at Sundance, “Nasty Baby” was acquired without a set release date. If it opens in 2015, the movie could be sandwiched between Wiig’s part in this summer’s bombastic heist comedy “Masterminds” — the latest offering from “Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess — and a supporting role in Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated “The Martian,” which could factor into next year’s Oscar race.

For “Welcome to Me” director Shira Piven, there was never any doubt that the same actress who gave us Target Lady and Gilly would fit firmly into Eliot Laurence’s script, which Piven helped to develop. She told HuffPost she was targeting an actress who existed in a “comic space” and could stretch into dramatic characterizations, rather than the other way around — Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation,” for example. (Were she to recruit a dramatic actress who can pull off comedy, Piven said Kate Winslet would have been her first choice, citing “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” as evidence.)

“We batted around a lot of lists of actresses, but in my mind she was really the one,” Piven said of Wiig. “I love those performances from comic actors who are asked to do something really heartbreaking.”

Wiig was the first to sign on, and a slew of others followed: Linda Cardellini as Alice’s patient best friend; Tim Robbins as her patient therapist; James Marsden, Wes Bentley, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Joan Cusack as the patient network executives who supervise Alice’s show.

Wiig acknowledges that Alice is hard to like, but because the character occupies some of the same fictional space that her “SNL” roles did, Alice’s idiosyncrasies — often tied to the demonstrative facial expressions that highlight Wiig’s humor — accentuate the character’s oddities without dehumanizing her.

“Eliot wrote such a detailed description of this character that I kind of just pictured it in my head as I was reading it,” she said. “It was so great just having him on set, even for little things like saying, ‘I feel like when I walk maybe I should be a little stiff up top.’ He was like, ‘Oh yeah, show me. Yeah, that feels like her.’ Because she has a mental illness, I wanted to be respectful of it and not comment on it and not make fun of her in any way, and if comedy came out of it, it was because of her just doing something funny, not because she’s sick.”

There’s something similar happening in “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” where Wiig is in full bad-mother mode. Unlikeable for entirely different reasons, the character still manages to ignite sympathy because Wiig’s performance is full-bodied in both appearance and actions.

In keeping, this transition to deeper storytelling seems natural for someone whose more memorable “Saturday Night Live” moments seemed to inhabit her entire body, à la Dooneese and impressions of Suze Orman and Liza Minnelli. In the same way that Wiig’s Oscar-nominated screenplay for “Bridesmaids” (written with Annie Mumolo) was heralded as a watershed for women in comedy, the future of Wiig’s career seems destined to become one of the “SNL” roster’s big-screen triumphs.

That’s the mark of a prosperous “Saturday Night Live” departure: a career that draws from and dismisses its sketch-comedy roots in the same breath. Meet Kristen Wiig, burgeoning indie queen.

51 Beauty Queens Vie For Miss USA Crown

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez, a fourth-degree black belt in the Korean martial art of taekwondo, was crowned Miss USA 2014 on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old from Las Vegas beat out 50 other contestants from all the states and the District of Columbia for the title of 63rd Miss USA. First runner-up was Miss North Dakota Audra Mari.Erin Brady, of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, the 2013 winner, gave up her crown to Sanchez after a three-hour telecast from the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana. Other runner-ups, judged on interviews, evening gowns and swimsuits were: home state beauty queen, Miss Louisiana Brittany Guidry; Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs, Miss Florida Brittany Oldehoff and Miss Iowa Carlyn Bradarich. All the titles included USA after the state.

Bradarich got a second chance when the viewing audience gave her the most votes on Twitter in the pageant’s first-ever “Save the Queen” option.

Sanchez will go on to represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe competition later this year.

In a vibrant red floor-length fishtail gown, Miss Nevada talked about the importance of women being able to defend themselves when asked a question about the high rate of sexual assaults on college campuses. Judge Rumer Willis, the 25-year-old daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, said 19 percent of U.S. undergraduate women are victims of sexual assault and asked Sanchez why she thinks this is being swept under the rug and what should be done about it.

Sanchez said bringing awareness to the issue was important, as well as women taking it upon themselves to learn how to defend themselves.

The subject of sexual assault was also on the mind of Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto. She made headlines this week when she said she was the product of rape. During a taped segment that aired when her name was called, Gatto said her mother was 19 when she was attacked leaving work in Pittsburgh and became pregnant.

Gatto said she is living proof “that your circumstances do not define your life.”

First runner-up Mari said she overcame being bullied in high school by competing in ice hockey. The Fargo, N.D., native wore a green floor-length evening gown and in her final interview talked about the importance of getting an education and going to college.

Contestants entered the stage on a glitzy float as Louisiana native singer-songwriter Marc Broussard sang the New Orleans hits “Iko Iko” and “Hey Pocky Way” to kick off the 2014 contest. The women introduced themselves while holding Mardi Gras masks in their hands as purple, green and gold confetti fell in the background.

The pageant also included musical acts by the country music duo Florida Georgia Line, rapper Nelly and Latin pop band Camila.

Celebrity judges walked a red carpet in evening gowns and tuxedos before the start of the show, posing for pictures and talking about the qualities they would be looking for in the beauty they crown the winner.

“It’s very important that she has confidence,” said Barbara Palacios, Miss Universe 1986 and a coach and judge for the new Telemundo reality show, “Miss Latina Universo.” ”The right attitude and perseverance are also very important.”

“It’s all about the eyes,” said Lance Bass of the pop singing boy group NSYNC. “I just want to see a girl that is just really having a good time up there.”

Others who walked the red carpet were former NBA star Karl Malone; actors Ian Ziering, Melissa Peterman and Rumer Willis; pageant show host Jeannie Mai; and Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization, which includes the Miss USA pageant.
