For The Clout: Lindsey Granger Passionately Explains Real Journalism vs. Shameless Click Chasing

Lindsey Granger Passionately Explains Real Journalism vs. Shameless Click Chasing

Source: screen cap / Daily Blast Live

When the unfathomable news of NBA Legend Kobe Bryant’s death broke, it shattered the world. While many were trying to figure out if it was real or a hoax, journalists and bloggers across the country were scrambling to fact check the event while some were just putting out random and triggering misinformation for the sake of clout and being “first.”

While it’s understandable that in the digital age no one wants to be on the tail end of news, one important thing has been forgotten and that’s to make sure that the news you are spreading is correct. As journalists, our number one goal above all else is to make sure that the information we distribute is not only accurate but also morally correct.

During a topic segment on the talk show Daily Blast Live, veteran journalist Lindsey Granger dropped a whole lot of truth bombs about not only the mishandling in the way media covered the tragedy; but also the insensitivity regarding personal feelings towards Kobe himself hours after he passed.

Hours after TMZ broke the news of Bryant’s passing to his wife and the world, Washington Post Political Journalist Felicia Sonmez tweeted out a 2016 article from Daily Beast that resurfaced Bryant’s 2003 case of sexual assault—which was dismissed after the accuser refused to testify or show up in court. She pointed out that Sonmez, a high ranking political journalist, was operating in a manner that is likened to a blogger versus a writer with actual training.

“I’m looking at the journalist Felicia,” Granger said. “She is someone who was a went through a sexual assault herself and she said that in the Washington Post, when she wrote an article a couple of years ago detailing her experience; but as a journalist it’s our job to objectively report the news. I know that may be tough for someone who survived sexual assault but looking at the story, she didn’t give the story any context and she got upset that she was being attacked on Twitter for tweeting a link that basically was condemning Kobe’s character and accusing him of rape.”

Granger didn’t stop there, she went on to call out everything wrong that Sonmez did and educated her on how to address a complex situation as a journalist.

”I think that her job as a journalist was to put that in context, you have a responsibility and you need to have the journalistic acumen to write the full story,” Granger continued. “Go to the Washington Post and say  this man was a nuance character, this man has a detailed layered history that we need to discuss.’ But don’t just tweet that out two hours after his death and be a political reporter for the Washington Post and tweet that and leave it there, because you’re opening yourself for the attacks you are receiving.”

Attacks that were honestly valid. The trolling tactic of tweeting links without proper context or ill-timed for shock value is definitely an improper technique that should have never happened at the hands of a journalist. But attacking celebrities for shock value is what sells. A brazen trend started by blogger Perez Hilton in 2005. Hilton’s gossip and tabloid style blog offered a fresh, yet demeaning and salacious news style that offered a more opinionated option for Entertainment News. But his style was never meant to be considered an industry standard—although that’s what his success led to.

Hilton’s model coupled with sites’ high traffic led to an explosion of blogs with an unconventional style of news reporting, which lacked empathy and often times facts. The unorthodox method eventually bled into journalism, producing a media culture that was focused on clickbait headlines and being first —a model still being used until this day.

”We are in a time where we don’t know what journalism is anymore,” Granger said. “We have a president that attacks journalists, we have TMZ who broke the news to Vanessa Bryant that her husband passed away—you know, what are we doing now for people who call themselves journalists? We have journalists who attacked a seven-year old child, which is Blue Ivy, and we look at them calling out her characteristics. We need to do better altogether as journalists and I look at this woman and I say it was your responsibility just to do better—and give it more time than just two hours after the man passes away to say what you think about him if it’s negative.”

A sentiment that many echo one hundred percent. As journalists, our job is not to break death or sensitive topics just for the sake of being first or just to be cited. Yes, there will always be blog style outlets like TMZ; but as professionals journalists, it’s our job is to operate with full integrity while unbiasedly telling the story.

“This is a complicated thing to talk about,” Granger continued. “But I think as a journalist if you’re going to take that name and that stance and that dignity of a position, I think you should do it properly and at least tell the complicated story with as much care as possible and that goes for everyone involved in this Kobe situation. We can all just have a little bit more empathy,” Granger concluded. Whether you’re the outlet trying to be first that were completely wrong saying his whole family was on the plane, have some empathy for other people. People lost their lives, so we have to learn to step back and remember that this man was a legend for so many people, he was also a complicated human; but let’s not assassinate his character when he who is no longer here to defend himself. We have to do better.”

A great journalist knows how to break a story with facts and not gossip. Overall, this isn’t an attack on blogs or bloggers nor knocking their validity, but journalists need to get back to the basics by reporting with integrity and truth, no matter what, and finally let the fad of sensationalism die.

Check out Lindsey Granger’s full statement below.

Tony Robbins Explains How to Beat Trump

If you have been following my Master Wizard Hypothesis series, you know I called Tony Robbins the best hypnotist in the world. His job is motivating people to improve their lives, and apparently he is amazing at it. His persuasion skills trace back to famous hypnotist Milton Erickson, same as mine. Robbins has added lots of layers to that learning, but his understanding of how people are influenced is similar to my world view, and probably quite different from yours.

Many of you have asked me how to design a Linguistic Kill Shot that would take out Trump. I keep saying I don’t know how, because his defenses are so solid. His Trump persona can shake off almost anything.

But what does Tony Robbins think? Business Insider asked Robbins how Trump’s opponents can beat him. Listen to Robbins’ answer and tell me who he expects to be our next president.

Convinced yet?

Oh, and I forgot to tell you I wrote a book that is relevant to the topic of our Moist Robot selves.

Update: If you want to boost your blog traffic, try posting about Taylor Swift, followed closely by a post on how to keep Trump out of the White House. Traffic just spiked hard.

Bernie Sanders Explains Why He’s Not Insulted When People Call Him A Socialist

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders explained on Friday why he’s not insulted when people call him a socialist.

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, laughed when he was asked by “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert why he wouldn’t take the words “liberal” and “socialist” to be insults.

“I prefer the term, actually, to be a progressive and I’ll tell you why,” he said. Using Denmark as an example, Sanders said that social-democratic countries had better health care, child care and higher education systems than those in the United States.

“What you have is a society where government — as I believe it should in this country, radical idea though it may be — should actually represent working people and the middle class rather than large campaign donors,” Sanders said.

When asked what his vision for America would look like in “concrete terms,” Sanders spoke about what he saw as a “moral outrage” in the United States.

“In concrete terms, what it means is that it is a moral outrage that the top one-tenth of 1 percent today owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent,” he said. “That is the outrage and that has gotta change.”

That outrage at income inequality, Sanders said, is why he does not have a Super PAC, which would allow corporations, unions and other groups to give unlimited donations.

“I don’t have a Super PAC, I’m one of the few presidential candidates that does not, because frankly, I do not support the agenda of corporate America or the billionaire class. I don’t want their money,” he said.

Sanders has surged ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire and Iowa, though polls this early in a presidential contest can be poor predictors of the eventual outcome. Asked why voters who think Clinton has a better shot of defeating a Republican should support him, Sanders made the case that he would match up better against a Republican in the general election.

“If you look at the polls of me running against Republicans, despite the fact that still in this country 20, 30, 40 percent of the people don’t know who I am or what I am fighting for, we do almost as well and in some cases better than Hillary Clinton does today, and that will only get better in the future,” he said.

Republicans win when the voter turnout is low,” Sanders continued. “I think the kinds of crowds and the excitement that we are generating with young people, with working people, will result in very large voter turnouts to get the White House, and not only get the White House, recapture the Senate and do well in the House.”

Sanders, who was first elected to Congress in 1990 and is its longest-serving independent, also rejected the suggestion that he was making a populist appeal similar to that of Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

“I think that what Trump is doing is appealing to the baser instincts among us, xenophobia and, frankly, racism,” he said. “I think that is disgraceful and not something we should be doing in this country in 2015.”

The Vermont senator, who at times has had a tense relationship with those in the Black Lives Matter movement, spoke about his vision for a more inclusive America.

“What I am talking about is a vision that goes beyond telling us that we have to hate a group of people,” he said. “What I am talking about is saying that in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, there are extraordinary things that we can do when people come together, black and white, and gay and straight, and demand that government start working for all of us and not just the few.”

Sanders, who has dismissed frivolous questions from reporters during his campaign, also played along with a lighter segment on the show where he stood in front of a camera and said whether he is for or against certain issues. Among those he weighed in on were rainy-day Mondays (he is against them) and kissing on the first date (he supports it sometimes).

Donald Trump Finally Explains Why He Doesn’t Apologize

If any of the presidential candidates have something apologize for, eh … it’s probably Donald Trump. But don’t expect to hear a “sorry” anytime soon.

“I fully think apologizing’s a great thing, but you have to be wrong,” Trump told Jimmy Fallon on his show Friday.

“This is unbelievable,” laughed Fallon. And it is.

During his brief time campaigning, Trump has managed to mock fellow candidates about their looks, publicly attack Fox’s Megyn Kelly over “unfair” questions during a debate and incense millions with his polarizing views on immigration.

Yeah, that’s pretty unbelievable. In Trump’s defense, however, he did say if he was ever wrong, he would apologize “sometime in the hopefully distant future.”

So, yeah, we’ll probably all be dead by then, but at least that’s something.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

This Theory Perfectly Explains Why ‘The Hobbit’ Movies Were So Bad

Look, some of us liked “The Hobbit” trilogy. They’re not the perfect movies, but it’s a perfect adventure. Oh, and there’s a dragon who’s a total baller.

Other people, however, didn’t really appreciate the films. In fact, they really hated them.

And that’s how frenemies are made.

The criticism has been that the movies were overly exaggerated, there was too much CGI and it didn’t need to be stretched into a trilogy. Now, a fan theory suggests the films were actually meant to be a little ridiculous and needlessly drawn out.

The Theory: “The Hobbit” films were bloated with CGI and long-winded because they represent Bilbo’s own exaggerated retellings of his adventure.

Redditor Questionbdp posed the idea as “internal justification” for why the movies were a “disappointment,” and it actually makes sense. The Redditor explains:

What Bilbo actually experienced during his adventure with the Dwarves was probably far less significant and monumental than the movies make it out to be, because the movies show how Bilbo retells his adventures, not how he actually lived them.

The theory goes on to say Bilbo probably felt bummed after he returned from his adventure to find all the other Hobbits didn’t care and were selling off all his stuff. (You nasty Hobbitses!) Because of this, he makes his story larger than life and “events which only filled a small book turned into three separate movies.”

Commenters called the theory “brilliant,” and one even joked, “Lol, Peter Jackson, is that you?”

Speaking of Jackson, even he says “The Hobbit” movies were meant to be a different tone than “Lord of the Rings,” but could this be the reason why?

In J. R. R. Tolkien‘s original stories, Bilbo authors his own memoir, There and Back Again, so it’s entirely possible that he embellished a bit. The dude was pretty good at making stuff up when explaining how he escaped the Goblin tunnels to his Dwarf bros, after all. And how else would you explain Legolas running up a crumbling tower?

Image: YouTube/MakeAGif

Ugh … #SMH.

Jackson said he doesn’t have regrets when it comes to the films, so we’re thinking he either completely missed that Legolas scene, or perhaps there’s a bigger plan at work.

Please let there be a bigger plan at work.

Woman Explains Why She Falsely Accused Her Dad Of Sexual Assault As A Child

“When I was a teenager, I ran away from home a lot,” says Amber, who had a tumultuous relationship with her mom growing up. “One time, my mom had called my friends trying to find me and threatened them with charges if they didn’t turn me in. I didn’t want to go home, so I made up accusations against my dad. I told the sheriffs that he was sexually assaulting me and that he was hitting me with a pistol … I knew if I said something, they’d start an investigation.” Ultimately Amber called the police and admitted the story was fabricated.

Looking back, Amber, now 24, says, “I hate that I did that to my dad. I don’t know how else to explain this. It was just something horrible. There’s no amount of times I can say sorry enough.”

Neil DeGrasse Tyson Talks Pluto With Stephen Colbert, Explains Why Earth Could Be A Dwarf Planet Too

As humans caught their first glimpse of Pluto’s surface on Tuesday — thanks to New Horizons’ historic flyby – comedian Stephen Colbert sat down with astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson to chat about the “9th rock from the sun.

Pluto was downgraded from a planet to a dwarf planet in 2006, and Tyson has often been credited with playing a central role in its demotion. During the interview, Colbert tried his hardest to get Tyson to change his position in light of the new images.

“It looks like a planet, it’s got atmosphere, it even has a heart – unlike you,” the comedian said.

Tyson refused to budge.

“[Calling Pluto a planet] would insult all the other planets,” Tyson quipped.

However, the director of the Hayden Planetarium did concede that these terms are all relative.

“Jupiter is more bigger compared to Earth than Earth is compared to Pluto,” Tyson told Colbert. “Jupiter is 11 times wider than Earth and Earth is five times wider than Pluto, so if we were Jovians, Earth would be a dwarf planet too.”

Watch the Pluto chat go down in the video above.

Silento Explains How “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” Went Viral [Exclusive]

You haven’t been able stand two minutes near a computer this year without being subjected to the “Watch Me Nae Nae” song. The viral dance hit (officially titled “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” has been the subject of many YouTube and Vine renditions but only the creator, Silento has the magic ingredient behind the record. At seventeen-years-young, the ATL native already has a gold-selling single and a label deal with Capital Records with nothing but potential ahead.

Now history has shown us that these sort of break-out hits don’t exactly lead to substantial careers but Silento insists that he’s not an one-hit wonder when we grilled him about the notion at the 2015 Bet Awards.

“Before [“Watch Me Nae Nae”], I was making other music; rapping and singing. That’s just the attention track,” a confident Silento tells Hip-Hop Wired. As fate would have it, his claim to fame started by playing around on social media.

“At first…I was having fun at school; just singing out of my mouth. And I recorded for fifteen seconds and put it on my Instagram,” Silento recalled. After getting several hundred comments, his next move could be considered a no-brainer.

58-Year-Old ‘Cougar’ Explains Benefits Of Dating Her 24-Year-Old ‘Cub’

Pie, 58, says she’s proud to be a “cougar” — an older woman who dates younger men. Her current “cub” is 24-year-old Oleg, whom she has been dating for four months. “Oleg is my darling little cub right now. He’s gorgeous,” she says, comparing his good looks to Orlando Bloom. “Sex with younger men, in my experience, they’re just ready to go on a dime.”

Pie says although her choice in men may be unusual for some to understand, she’s proud of her dating habits. “I don’t see myself as a mother figure to these men but I see myself, honest to God, as a mentor,” she says. “Anyone who has an issue with me going out with younger men: Love is love, baby; you never know where you’re going to find it.”

Watch the video above to see where Pie says the “magic” happens, and Pie shares her top 10 tips for dating younger men here.

Travi$ Scott Explains Why He Embarrassed A Cameraman At Summer Jam [VIDEO]

This year’s HOT 97 Summer Jam had plenty of standout moments but Travi$ Scott ran away with the event’s most viral moment. No, it wasn’t for the debut of an incredible track from his upcoming album. It was because he literally put a cameraman on that Summer Jam scream, calling him “a nerd” and kicking him off stage after he had been filming him for most of the show.

While Kanye West’s ghostwriter the G.O.O.D. Music artist felt that “500 kids” rushing a baricade to see his performance should have gripped the Internet headlines, he broke down his side of the story with Power 106’s The Cruz Show.

“I don’t know if anyone noticed but that was like, the second-to-last song of my set,” Scott explained to the Los Angeles station. “I was already pissed about [Hot 97] not allowing me to have a screen on stage when I performed. I don’t get why radio shows allow artists to do shows without creative control, without any art direction at all. Instead of that, I get their press guys, their camera guys to be my backdrop of my show.”

In summary, he felt like it wasn’t fair to have a generalized media presence for his show. After the show, he tweeted an apology for his actions.

Complex also caught up with the videographer Jameer Pond, who insisted there was no bad blood between him and the rapper but he wasn’t a chump, either.

“I can laugh about it now because cooler heads prevailed, but I asked him if he wanted to fight—not so much in those words—but I asked him if he wanted to fight because again, going back to me being a man, a short man from Brooklyn, I’ve been in plenty of situations where jokes go a little too far,” Pond said of the embarrassing moment. “That’s how I felt at the time, but cooler heads prevailed, and I’m able to walk away, and now with things going viral I’m able to laugh about it.”

Bill Nye Announces the 2015 Fun Fun Fun Fest Lineup and Explains the Axis of Fun

Nothing validates a claim quite like hard facts from a scientist, which is why Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin’s popular cross-genre Indie music festival, hand-picked Bill Nye to announce the 2015 lineup and provide evidence that this fest is, in fact, the most fun in all the land.

Fun Fun Fun X from funfunfunfestival on Vimeo.

Although The Science Guy clearly has the chops to crunch the numbers and appears to be all up in pop culture these days, how exactly did he end up as an ambassador for this fest?

“About 2 years ago, I wanted to find a better way of showing folks that FFF was different than other festivals, because I really believe that it is. It’s not a very credible thought coming from me though,” explains co-founder James Moody. “So we decided to work with a scientist to basically prove, through science, that FFF was special… and scientifically different from everything else out there. Thankfully Bill Nye agreed, likes tacos, and loves Wu-Tang, so here we are. Because science.”

To slam-dunk the case, Nye employs all the tools in his arsenal such as a Wu-Tang Periodic table, a mind-blowing fun equation and “Quantitative Bummer Observation” metrics to explain his conclusion. With the comedy lineup yet to be announced, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him show up on the Yellow stage come November but I don’t have the science to prove it yet.

Check out the video for this year’s lineup and the full demonstration.

Mom Who Left Babies Alone In Hot Car Explains Her Decision

Shanesha Taylor first made headlines last year when she was arrested for leaving her two young sons in a hot car while she went to a job interview in Scottsdale, Arizona. Homeless at the time, the single mom was desperate to land the position that she describes as a life-changing opportunity.

But that desperation led to a near-tragic decision. In the video above, Taylor explains what led her to leave her then 6-month-old baby and 2-year-old alone in a hot car — possibly over 100 degrees — in March 2014. After her babysitter fell through, she explains, “I became frantic, but I knew I couldn’t miss this interview.” So she drove to the job interview with her two kids, who fell asleep in the car. Believing the interview would take only 15 minutes, she decided to leave her sons in the car with the windows cracked. Taylor recalls, “I peeked in the back window at the boys and said, ‘Fifteen minutes, let’s go!'”

But the interview took more than 15 minutes, and Taylor felt she had no choice but to continue meeting with her potential employers. “You know this job is going to take care of your family. How do you say, ‘Stop the interview, because I need to go?'” she asks.

By the time she returned to the car, the police were waiting.

“After I finished the interview,” she says, “I was on top of the world. As soon as I turned the corner into the parking lot, my life came crashing down.”

Taylor was arrested and charged with two felony counts of child abuse and spent 11 days in jail. Her tearful mugshot went viral, prompting an outpouring of sympathy. Strangers sensitive to her efforts to create a better life for her family donated more than $ 100,000 to a crowdfunding page set up on her behalf. She was offered a deal to avoid prosecution, but the deal required her to allocate the donated money to a trust for her children. Why didn’t she comply, and how does she respond to allegations that she misused the donations?

On Thursday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Taylor opens up about the incident. In hindsight, does she think she made a mistake?

Lalaine Explains How That Magical ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reunion Came To Be

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and that rock doesn’t have Wi-Fi), you’ve probably heard about the recent mini “Lizzie McGuire” reunion with Hilary Duff, Lalaine and Jake Thomas. If you did somehow miss it, just know their spontaneous meetup in a bowling alley was definitely what dreams are made of.

So this happened last night… #LizzieMcGuire

A photo posted by Jake Thomas (@sirjakethomas) on

Recently, Miranda Sanchez (known as Lalaine IRL) spoke with HuffPost Entertainment and explained why that impromptu meeting was totally fate.

Image: Tumblr

So how did this even happen?
I like to bowl. I have my own ball that my dude got me during Christmas, so we’re pretty into it. We started bowling and I swore I thought I heard [Hilary Duff]. Like her voice will never not be recognizable for me. I mean, c’mon, we were like family for how long? And then I looked, and it totally was her. We finally happened to be in the same place after 14 years. It was random and a little bit of fate maybe, so I forced fate’s hand a little bit and I immediately hit up Jake [Thomas] because he’s like less than a mile away from the bowling alley.

Oh cool, so you guys kept in touch?
Yeah, I have actually been very close with most of the people that were on the show. I was just on the phone with Adam [Lamberg] for example, so I just was like, “This is hilarious,” so I hit Jake up, and I was like, “Yo, at Pins. Hilary’s like four lanes down,” and he was like, “Haha! Oh my God! Should I come there?” So he came on over, and then we were like, “Let’s make this even more hilarious and send her a drink.” And we did. She waved to us, and she had no idea who we were because we were pretty far from her and it was dark.

But then she walked over and immediately saw me. As she was walking up, I’m just like, “Really, girl? Really?”… It hit her that it’s me. She turned around and was cracking up, and it didn’t even faze her that Jake was standing right next to me. I was like, “Are you kidding me? Did you not see this thing right by me?” She was like double stumped … It was just fate.

Image: Giphy

Wow, this is amazing. It’s the best Instagram post I’ve ever seen.
Oh for sure, and Jake was just like, “I get dibs on putting this up first,” and I was like, “I don’t care about that, dude.” It’s probably been a couple years less for him, like, maybe it’s been 12 years for him since he’s seen her, but for me it’s been like 14 … I was more on the fact that it was hilarious that all of us were here.

So was Gordo not invited because he hates bowling?
[Laughs] Oh my God! Adam would’ve totally been invited. Gordo may hate bowling, but who knows — after 12 years he might’ve changed his mind.

Might’ve changed his mind. Sure …

Wife Of Convicted Murderer Explains Why She Lied On The Stand (VIDEO)

In December 2008, Linda and Steven Riley were found brutally stabbed to death in their California home. Their only son, Matt, who found the bodies, was arrested, convicted of their murders, and is serving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

But Matt’s aunt, Angela, believes her nephew is innocent. “There’s no way that my nephew would have murdered his own parents,” she says. “In my eyes this is a gross miscarriage of justice. My nephew Matt is completely innocent.”

She places the blame on her nephew’s wife, Jenny, for helping to land Matt behind bars, pointing out that Jenny had conflicting stories while testifying against her husband. “I believe Jenny began to lie because she felt that the police weren’t satisfied with what she said, and she kept revising the story until she came up with one that they were happy with,” Angela explains.

Recalling the night of the murder and how her husband acted afterward, Jenny says, “He reeked of guilt. It seemed like Matt was hiding something from me.” She acknowledges that her story had multiple versions, but explains, “I did not want to be the one to nail his coffin shut. I changed my story a lot. The truth was that Matt was gone that night. There’s not a doubt in my mind that Matt murdered his parents.”

Watch the video above as Jenny explains why she lied under oath, and see what happens when she is offered the chance to take a polygraph test.
