The Latest Timex + Todd Snyder Watch Is the Perfect Father’s Day Present

Todd Snyder just has a gift for finding the sweet spot between nostalgic romance and modern feasibility. His savvy blend of contemporary fashion with timeless style comes through in most of his designs—though we particularly love the collaborations. The brand’s latest collab with legendary watch brand Timex is one for the ages.

Introducing the Timex + Todd Snyder Welton Bi-Metal Quartz watch.

timex todd
Todd Snyder

The story goes something like this: While browsing through the Timex archives one day, Todd’s eye was captured by a long-forgotten timepiece that seemed achingly familiar. But this was more than simple nostalgia. The Mercury looked just like the watch Todd imagined his own father wore. It had a silver face and a brown leather strap, with just a hint of gold. Somehow, the old Timex seemed rugged and elegant at the same time. Classy, but tough. Todd was determined to bring this overlooked classic back to life according to today’s exacting standards.

So to honor the memory and style of Todd Snyder’s father, and of every dad who wore a Timex with class and grace, the Welton Bi-Metal brings yet another classic into the 21st century. Just in time for Father’s Day.

timex todd
Todd Snyder

The Perfect Father’s Day Gift

Originally named the Mercury, the new Timex + Todd Snyder Welton Bi-Metal ($ 158) retains the sleek, form-follows-function appeal of mid-century design while incorporating the latest in timekeeping technology. The original V-Conic has been replaced with quartz movement. A 34mm stainless steel case houses a brushed silver face with simple, elegant gold numerals and hands, and it’s capped by a domed acrylic crystal and adorned with a subtle 18mm lug. Bound with a brown leather strap, the aesthetic of the casual but classy Welton Bi-Metal hearkens back to the golden age of American design.

Water resistant up to 30 meters, the Welton Bi-Metal is perfectly sized and elegant without being flashy. It still exudes a rugged grace, and its style will let you take it from the office to the workshop without missing a beat. Of all the Timex + Todd Snyder collaborations, this is the one we’d most like to give—or get—for Father’s Day.

So here’s to dads everywhere. Thanks for showing us, day in and day out, that men can be rugged and classy at the same time.

GET IT: Pick up the Timex + Todd Snyder Welton Bi-Metal Quartz watch ($ 158) at Todd Snyder

Flags of Our Fathers

Clint Eastwood

Genre: Drama

Price: $ 9.99

Rental Price: $ 2.99

Release Date: October 20, 2006

From Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) comes the World War II epic "Flags of Our Fathers,” produced by Eastwood, Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Schindler’s List”), and Rob Lorenz (“Mystic River”). February 1945. Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo capturing that moment became a symbol of victory to a nation that had grown weary of war and made instant heroes of the six American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. But the surviving flag raisers had no interest in being held up as symbols and did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay on the front with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory. ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ is based on the bestselling book by James Bradley with Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company. Bradley’s father, John “Doc” Bradley, was one of the soldiers pictured raising the flag, although James never knew the full extent of his father’s experiences until after the elder Bradley’s death in 1994. The ensemble cast of “Flags of Our Fathers” includes Ryan Phillippe (“Crash”), Jesse Bradford (“Happy Endings”), Adam Beach (“Windtalkers”), Paul Walker (“Into the Blue”), Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot”), Barry Pepper (“Saving Private Ryan”) and John Benjamin Hickey (“Flightplan”). Clint Eastwood directed “Flags of Our Fathers” from a screenplay adapted by William Broyles, Jr. (“Cast Away”) and Oscar winner Paul Haggis (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Crash”).

Awesome Dad Teaches Fellow Fathers How To Do Their Daughters’ Hair

Philippe Morgese knows a thing or two when it comes to styling his daughter’s hair. Now, he’s sharing his skills with other dads.

According to BuzzFeed News, the single dad started out using just simple barrettes with his daughter, Emma. Then, he polished his skills to learn how to do pigtails and even complex braids. Morgese became such an expert that he won a contest started by fellow hair-styling dad Greg Wickherst.

He got so many compliments and even requests for advice from fellow dads that he started a class to teach fathers how to do their daughters’ hair. The free class, which was held at the International Academy in South Daytona, Fla., on Oct. 6, provided tutorials from brushing the girls’ hair to learning how to do braids and buns. The dads also received goody bags with supplies so they can continue their hair-styling journeys.

Morgese shared photos from the class on Reddit on Oct. 7. So far, the photos have been viewed more than 2 million times.

The class was such a success that Morgese started the Daddy Daughter Hair Factory Facebook page to share updates. In a post on the page, the dad wrote that the commitment from the fathers in the class was “admirable.” “I’m so proud of you guys,” he wrote.

Morgese also told BuzzFeed News he plans on having more classes in the future. So get ready, dads. We have a feeling spots will go fast.

Man Receives Father’s Day Card From Dead Son — 26 Years Later

The Father’s Day card may have been 26 years too late, but for one dad in Lynchburg, Virginia, it was a priceless gift from beyond the grave.

In 1989, Duane Schrock Jr. wrote his dad a note for Father’s Day and sent it in the mail. The card was lost in transit and his dad never received it.

Until now.

Duane Schrock Sr. told WSET that his son’s card finally found its way to him, fittingly arriving at his home a few days after Father’s Day this year.

“Somebody picked up the ball and carried it and after all these years they must still have forwarded it,” Schrock, who is 87, told the news outlet. “I still kind of tear up when I think about it.”

The card had evidently been returned to sender and forwarded on several different occasions. Shrock says he’s moved all around the country in the intervening years.

fathers day card

“Dear Dad,” the card read, per ABC News. “We haven’t been in touch for quite a while, I’m doing fine and am very happy in Richmond, I’d like to hear from you. Have a Happy Father’s Day. Love Duane.”

Shrock said the letter was an especially poignant surprise as his son, who was gay, died of AIDS in 1995. Shrock added that their relationship had been strained when Duane was alive because he’d struggled to accept his son’s homosexuality.

The letter, Shrock told WSET, was “like a sign from heaven that his son is doing just fine.”

Louis C.K. Gets The Best Father’s Day Message From His TV Daughter

If any grumpy, balding, middle-aged dad is going to earn admiration from his kid, it’s going to be Louis C.K.

Hadley Delany, who plays one of the comedian’s daughters on “Louie,” had a Father’s Day message for her show-biz pop. It beats Hallmark treacle any day.

“You taught me the most important rule of all: never, ever get fat,” she says in a Made Man video posted last week.

Later in the clip, she asks, “What other dad would catch their daughter smoking pot and then take her out for burgers? That’s like an irresponsible level of cool.”

Hey, nobody said the guy was Ward Cleaver.

Check out the full video above. And a belated happy Father’s Day to all of you other stand-up dads, even if you don’t do standup.

FtM Feelings On Father’s Day

My father was the first person to call me a faggot.

One night, my younger brother had woken me up from sleep due to a realization that death is inevitable. I tried to talk him down, but he wasn’t able to be soothed. At wits end, my solution for his anxiety was to accompany him to our parents in the living room. My father, high and drunk, looked at us and with a smirk on his face said, “Holding hands? How can I help you two faggots?”

My father’s abuse, physical and verbal, was always jarring, but this particular phrase surprised me. Two years earlier, at age 6, I came out as a transgender boy to him. We were walking to baseball practice. I was the only female-assigned-at-birth on my entire baseball league. I remember complaining to him that my teammates challenged me relentlessly because they viewed me as a tomboy, not another boy.

“They throw the ball harder at me, they quiz me on players stats, they wait for me to mess up and they make fun of how I run, but they shouldn’t, because I’m a boy, too.”

“What? No, you’re not!” My father exclaimed.

Softly, I rebutted, “Well, maybe not… a full boy.. but I am at least half boy.”

He asked me if there was a dick between my legs that he didn’t know about.

Standing in front of him that night, nurturing my brother, I felt affirmed. I knew he viewed being a fag as feminine, and therefore a shameful trait. I wasn’t sure what the term truly meant, but I knew it referred to a specific kind of man. Through hateful words, he was unconsciously recognizing me as male.

My father, as most fathers do, taught me how to perform masculinity and who was “allowed” to be masculine. He assumed only people assigned male at birth could be masculine. He taught me that being a man meant protecting your masculinity in extreme ways. He expressed verbal discomfort around the fact that I could beat up boys. He’d tell me that these boys would eventually become men, and I would be put into my place. To prove this to me, one day he snapped after my brother and I had a scuffle. He grabbed me and held my hands behind my back. He directed my brother to hit me as I was restrained. On my knees and unable to defend myself, my brother wept as he punched and kicked me.

At the start of my medical transition, I needed a man who was comfortable with his body, sexuality and masculinity to be in my life. I wanted support in matters dealing with sex, as well as my physical and emotional changes due to hormone replacement therapy. I was looking for a father-type figure. After some searching and a few problematic and lackluster experiences with male therapists, I fathered myself. I learned how to shave my face. I excitedly flaunted my new body hair to the Internet. I embarrassingly watched a lot of bad porn.

The more I passed as male, the harder it became to get close to men in my life. I’ve felt pressure to perform a masculine person’s specific brand of masculinity, or affirm them, in order to have a bond with them. This type of set-up does not feel authentic to me. While I didn’t find a dad during my male puberty, I was helped a lot by a friend. Kent is a cisgender, straight male who helped me simply by holding space for my transformations, feelings, queerness and softness over coffee. Our connection through non-performative masculine support was life-altering. My past experiences with masculinity, before Kent, felt staged, fragile and isolating. Many of us are just little boys who are quietly weeping as we’re directed by someone else to punch and kick.

I am not implying that I am different from most men. In fact, my girlfriend has a tendency to remind me of this when I act out. I possess my fair share of insecurities and have gained male affirmation, in the past, through silly and harmful methods. Recognizing our similarities as men and creating dialogue is the first step in gender healing. It is time to deconstruct masculine rigidity. Another step is to change the future as fathers. I want to be a dad. I find this to be horrifying, but not for the reasons many do. While I haven’t seen my father in nearly a decade, I still struggle with what he taught me about being masculine. Because of this, I fear behaving like him when raising children. I also scrap with the idea that because I am transgender, I am somehow not “man enough” to be legitimately viewed as someone’s father. As a culture, we need to change the narrative around what fathers look like. Fathers aren’t always born with conventional male genitalia. They don’t have to be biologically related to their children. Dads can be queer. They can be kind. Fathers shouldn’t have anything to do with upholding patriarchal male standards. Fathers are all genders. Fathers can be so much more then what our traditional view of them is.

I don’t fully know how I will interact with my kids if I have them. I do understand that no matter what, I will be myself. I’ll give them permission to feel and exist as whatever gender they choose. I can promise that I won’t perform for them. I will only show up as my complicated, transgender, sensitive, bisexual, sober, funny, spiritual, ever-changing and supportive self. I will always show up. This Father’s Day, I will love my father from the furthest distance possible by listening to a Black Sabbath song for him. I will thank him for teaching me about what I do not want to be and I will express gratitude for who I can become without him.

Happy Father’s Day to My Male-Identified Lesbian Parent

2015-06-20-1434823449-6643988-grandma_Pat_and_Lewis.jpg

We haven’t always gotten along. In fact, we have had more than our fair share of turbulent years. Stepparenting my brother and I couldn’t have been easy, and there weren’t a lot of other lesbian parents back in the 1970s and ’80s to talk to about it.

Perhaps I fought with you because it was easy — much safer to hurt your feelings than my mother’s or my biological father’s. Perhaps I fought with you because that’s what kids and parents do when they are struggling to balance independence and responsibility. But you always encouraged my dreams, and you always wanted me to be my best self, just like you do for my children.

But one thing I know for sure — no matter what I said or did, you would never go away. There was so many things you couldn’t control, like the simple fact that you were in a same-sex relationship at a time in America when that was abhorred. You couldn’t make us happy, because happiness comes from within. But you could control if you stayed or left, and you always stayed.

I think sometimes life is harder than we think it will be when we are children. I know parenting is harder than I thought it would be. But you managed the most important aspect of parenting — you gave me security. No matter, what, I knew you would love me anyway. No matter what, you would help me if I was in trouble.

I have been poor, depressed, or sick at varying times in my life, and I always knew if I asked, you would be there. Even if you were sick, or hated my spouse, or thought I was making a mistake, you would do whatever you could to help me.

That is the kind of unconditional love we all talk about. It’s not about agreeing about everything, or liking to do the same sorts of activities. It’s about knowing that no matter what, the people who love you will always be there, in good times and bad, sickness and health. Words that we say so often and rarely mean. There is no “unless” in the way you love me — you will love me no matter what mistakes I make or pain I cause. And I have relied on that love more than I have ever admitted, and my children do, too. I see how much they love you, and how gentle and patient you are with them.

So Happy Father’s Day, Pat. I love you, too.

Just in Time for Father’s Day: A Survey of Facial Hair from Abraham Lincoln to Will Ferrell

facial-hair-hero

Facial hair is not a subject people are dispassionate about. For Jeeves, P. G. Wodehouse’s brainy arbiter of decorum, who believed that “A man’s character is better displayed through his actions than his attempts at facial hair,” there was no room for gray area (or stubble). The razor ruled. Whereas, until 1916, British soldiers were required to wear moustaches.

Facial hair is literally a sign of masculinity, as its appearance marks a boy’s biological entry into manhood. But its symbolic meaning is always in flux. In classical Greece, philosophers wore beards; later they’d be favored by counterculture beatniks and “turn on, tune in, drop out” hippies who rejected their Gillettes along with gray flannel suits. In the seventies and eighties, the bushy mustaches of Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck reminded us that facial hair can be associated with virility and sex appeal, while the Anonymous hacktivists have adopted fearsome Guy Fawkes masks to mark their vigilante status. (Take that Yosemite Sam.)

But we have the hipsters—all those tattooed, man-bunned and bearded baristas—to thank for giving facial hair a fashion twist and, who, in trickle-up fashion, have made a hirsute handsomeness popular among Hollywood types from Fifty Shades’s Jamie Dornan to Night’s Watch commander Kit Harington.

What better way to celebrate Father’s Day, than a look at the ever-growing popularity of facial hair?

Jimmy Kimmel Wants You To Serve Your Dad Breakfast In The Shower For Father’s Day

What dad doesn’t like a nice breakfast and a shower??

On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this week, Jimmy put out a challenge to his viewers: serve your father a nice breakfast on Father’s Day. Sounds rather lovely! The one catch — because it wouldn’t be fun if there wasn’t — is that your dad must be in the shower when you serve it.

Jimmy, you’re going to be making a lot of enemies who have the power to turn off the television. Still, this should prove to be pretty hilarious.

We can’t wait. Sorry, dads.

Our Father’s Sons

Growing up with a father who is a Lieutenant Colonel of the US Army who also happens to be a hardcore Republican and Wall Street trader who used the word “faggot” at the dinner table wasn’t exactly a warm welcome for me as I discovered my sexuality. When I first took a look at Marky Mark in those now infamous Calvin Klein ads at 12 years old and got that feeeling, I thought, fuck, this is going to be a fun ride.

It probably didn’t help that my brother was beating me on the side, like a part time job, and that I had six years of intensive speech therapy for a mumble and lisp that sure as hell wasn’t going anywhere quickly. Most times when I spoke, people would just mutter back “WHAT?”, and so I stopped wanting to talk since it seemed like nobody was listening. Yet, I had so much to say! Even at that age, I knew my voice was to be heard; I knew all of our voices are to be heard.

What I’ve discovered is that one day, long ago, we were lied to. We were told that we weren’t good enough, and we believed it because we were naïve, and feeling vulernable in our skin. We wanted so sincerely to be seen for all that we are, but often, people weren’t willing to take a look at who that person was. It was at this same time when we started closing ourselves off and took a nose dive into fear, often burying our shame and avoiding our true identity.

We got busy fighting ourselves, so now we spend our days in competition with one another. Our energy is spent in trying to one up each other in all areas of life, and in turn, we try to one up ourselves. We never think we’re enough, and we think that burying underneath things like superficiality and sex partners is going to fill in the missing answers. That’s simply because we don’t know where to look for the missing answers; we don’t even know what questions to pose.

But, damn, do we love posing!

I know the game well. All of the revolving characters, with their ins and outs, many downs and even all those ups, had precedence in my life. The emotionally unavailable men, the vanity, and the feeling that I’m just so different than everyone so leave me alone, what you staring at boo?

It’s as if we don’t even know what we’re staring at when we look into the mirror. We are in some way blocked, but we’re not sure what that block is, so we fixate on our perfect hair and just-the-right-outfit. We seem to have forgotten what genuine love is, and when someone walks by us with a smile, it’s as if they’re a fucking alien, because our senses think we must be in some great danger.

We know we were born this way, and not because Lady Gaga told us so, yet we push the envelope because something inside of us feels like we shouldn’t have been born.

The one thing that needs to be seen is our true self. Underneath the flash of cash and ego, resides a beating heart. It’s within that heart where there is pain, there are scars, and there is a story. That story is one of survival, of strength, and a whole lot of untapped power.

What I’ve realized is that we can’t drive the same train all of our lives. We can’t continue to do what we were doing when we were younger, and we can’t continually hope that we were that age again. The past is gone, and here we stand on our own two feet. We must firmly plant them onto the ground, and get out and change stations when it’s time for a new take off. Yet, few of us are hearing the signal. We are ignoring the call.

We are ignoring the call to become authentic, and so we’re caught in a never ending rat race. We spin in circles, wondering why we only feel great when our body is a little leaner than normal, or we just managed to shag the hottest British lad who’s in town visiting and whom we met on Grindr.

We have begun to rely on constant fixes because, deep down, we need constant fixing. It ain’t nice, but it’s true. Sometimes honesty is a bitch — sometimes we are too.

The way we treat our peers in the same community as we find ourselves in is shameful, because we are full of shame. We project our own feelings onto others, and judge those around us because we are judging ourselves.

We compare. We scrutinize. We front. We even throw shade. And a whole lot of it!

It’s because we are living in the shade. Too many of us gay men are afraid to step into ourselves, because we believe what we were all told at some point of time; that something is wrong with us.

Now, we spend our days picking apart what’s wrong in others. We jump from partner to partner, afraid of connecting authentically because we don’t even know who we authentically are.

We forget that our sexual orientation doesn’t make us any different; it just makes us unique. It doesn’t give us a reason to treat one another like shit, but rather, should be an opportunity to treat one another with admiration and respect.

Many of us have similar wounds, and they’re sure not going to be filled if we are in constant belittling of one another. How do we get over ourselves, and in turn, discover who we were truly born to be?

We get real. We become mindful. We make social groups that have some sort of positive outreach. We stop showing up for the gang bang, and instead get together twenty men who want to make healthy changes and drink green juice.

We talk it out. In that dialogue, we will discover that we are all the same; We are all one.

On top of this, we sure could implement a meditation practice or some sort of faith in a power greater than us. That definitely won’t hurt. We must develop ourselves and look forward to our expansion. We must realize that we don’t need to be the best or only, and we’re allowed to grow every day.

It’s time we make small changes, and find out the right questions to ask. When we can ask ourselves specific questions that are results oriented, we can get specific answers. These answers can lead to big breakthroughs, and help us live from our heart rather than our ego. It’s time we find out what the difference is.

The reason we are here on this earth is to connect with others authentically, and share our vulnerability. It doesn’t matter what’s been done to us; we are not victims, we are victorious. It’s time we share in our great victory and uprising.

We’ve got to rely on one another and bring eachother up when we are feeling down. We never know what someone is facing, or what someone has had to endure in order to stand in front of us.

Growing up with my father, I realized that on a spiritual level, I was meant to help him grow, and the way he treated me was meant to make me as strong as fucking possible.

I may not be bench-pressing 230 lbs in a cut off tank top and my muscles may not tell the story of who I am, but my love for myself does. That’s what I learned to come home to every time I didn’t feel as if I was enough.

When we can step away from the game, we can realize that what we have is actually meaningful. All physical items are temporary, just as all big dicks will go limp at some point in time.

Yet, the heart of our soul will continue to beat for all time. It will guide us to everything we need, including a better relationship with one another.

Wouldn’t it be a relief to let go of all that striving energy, and just be? Imagine life without a fight.

Compassion can shatter the walls that keep us separated and away from the epic-ness that we could be. That we are. All we’ve got to do is love, which starts with ourselves. That may not come as a surprise, but what may is that I believe we shouldn’t only love ourselves, but we should love ourselves so damn much where our cup runs over and spill onto every sidewalk and every where we find ourselves. Fill that cup up with your love, yo!

Are you up for the challenge? We’ve faced so much other shit in our lives, that I believe we can face this too. We can face our authentic selves and in turn, find our voice, so we can share it with the world. So we can share it with one another.

We are meant to be heard, and we are enough.

We are enough, and we are Our Father’s Sons.

What Kids Really Think About Father’s Day

Father’s Day tends to bring a flood of heartfelt blog posts from parents and sweet dad-themed commercials from all sorts of brands.

But what do kids have to say about the holiday?

Comedian and YouTube personality Mark Malkoff interviewed some children about the dad-centric day, and their responses were predictably funny and adorable.

Highlights include the boy who claims his dad invented Father’s Day and the girl who says she’s going to give her father a trip to Disney World, paid for by him, of course.

How William Eggleston’s Designer Daughter Transformed His Art into the Perfect Father’s Day Surprise

Photo: Courtesy of Maude Clay

William Eggleston, widely regarded as the father of modern color photography, is not on Instagram, and thus missed it when his textile designer daughter, Andra, recently let slip an image of his Father’s Day present on her feed. On Sunday, she’ll be giving him a bow tie from her just-launched collaboration with Nashville tie maker Otis James, featuring one of her Electra Eggleston prints created from her dad’s sketches—abstract drawings that are lesser-known but as magnificently saturated in color as his iconic dye-transfer photographs and, like those images, reveal a vivid and rarified way of seeing.

“Let’s name her Electra!” Bill Eggleston allegedly shouted at first sight of his newborn daughter, to which her mother Rosa retorted, “Over my dead body!” (“Did I forget to mention histrionics in relation to both parents?” their daughter dryly recalls on the Electra Eggleston website.) Thus she was instead named Andra, and thus, four decades later, bequeathed her rejected moniker to her line of evocatively printed textiles, versatile enough to be worn or to be used for the home. As she says by phone from Nashville, “When I told him what I wanted to do with the drawings, he said [a former actress, she affects a bluntly convincing imitation of her father’s low, gruff Southern voice], ‘You have my permission to do whatever you want.’ ”

A bow tie was a natural proposition for the debut fashion collaboration, given her father’s predilection for wearing them on the regular—he is known to dress with a certain standout, dishabille elegance (recall the Marc Jacobs ad he appeared in alongside Charlotte Rampling, shot by his friend Juergen Teller). “I wanted something meaningful to commemorate the collection and to show my father what could be made of the prints,” Andra says. After moving back to the South a few years ago and reconnecting with her dad in nearby Memphis, she reached out to fellow Nashville designer James, who’d been earning an esteemed reputation for his handmade, custom hats and ties, and found in him a true aesthetic match. “I’m incredibly grateful to Otis for his craftsmanship,” she says.

The resulting bow ties were constructed in a limited edition—just ten each, in silk linen, two prints rendered in four different colorways, in palettes of multicolor or predominantly sage or midnight blue but dubbed Kentucky: Foxglove, Berlin: Mitte. You could say the prints are impressions of the places where her dad has photographed, as much as they are inspired by the musicality of a Kandinsky painting (Eggleston is a skilled pianist and a Bach fanatic), or even his dreams (generally laconic when it comes to his work, he once described his subconscious thoughts: “When I’m asleep I’m in a world quite removed from me, with moving lights and perfectly contoured shapes.”).

“I always related to them more than I did the photography,” Andra says. “He imparted that part of himself more so to my brothers. I saw the drawings as more than just part of his process, but they also made me see his photographs differently.” Eggleston’s sketches have been exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and catalogued in his major retrospective at the Whitney in 2008; they are relatively small pieces, frequently drawn on hotel stationery or receipts. The Lamplighter Lounge in Memphis has at times furnished him felt-tip markers should inspiration for those perfectly contoured shapes strike mid-drink.

From early on, father and daughter bonded over drawing and shopping sprees to the art supply store, but growing up was not always easy. “It was tumultuous!” Andra says. “How to integrate William Eggleston the father with William Eggleston the artist. . . .  All my life he was supportive of my art. But he was so eccentric and I was always like, can we just be normal? I was so tired of standing out.”

Stories abound in Memphis, of both parents riding around as teenagers in matching baby blue Cadillacs, or heading downtown, dressed to the nines, putting on Southern Gothic Dada-ist art happenings with Alex Chilton of the band Big Star, and photographer William Christenberry. Lamplighter regulars recount her father’s capes, his knee-high riding boots. He has never owned a pair of jeans.

Andra laughs. “Yes,” she says. “He loves sparkly things, he loves anything with sequins or diamonds. He can’t stand it if I cut my hair short or wear overalls. He’ll be all like [another low-register Eggleston imitation] ‘What’re you . . . wearin’?’ ”

Recently, in Los Angeles, he bought her a vintage Chanel suit he’d picked out, a complete surprise. “Presents are a once in a blue moon thing for him, so it’s special,” Andra says. “It was all him, all his idea.”

Above all, she says, her father has taught her to take risks. “He loves extravagant things but he doesn’t care about brands or prices, he just loves beauty: bright, bedazzling things and something very classic. I used to always like a Hanes white V-neck shirt the way he has tons of button-down white shirts. It’s like a canvas for him. He’ll add something vintage and something with flair, something unforgettable. And it always works for him, damn him!” Again she laughs.

“I can’t wait to hear his reaction to the tie itself,” she says. “I imagine he’ll wear it sitting on his couch smoking in his apartment. He and I have this in common, we both think, if you have something nice, you don’t save it, you use it every day. Whatever we have that’s beautiful or ornate, we wear every day.”

Emotional New Ad Gives Prop To Single Moms On Father’s Day

A heart-tugging new ad from Angel Soft has an unexpected twist: In the two-minute commercial, grown children wish a happy Father’s Day to the single moms who raised them.

Unsurprisingly, most of the men and women tear up as they recount growing up with moms who handled it all, from putting food on the table to fixing the car.

“She did all of it — and she did it all as though she were two people,” one daughter recalls. “If our car broke down she would say, ‘Oh, that’s the alternator.'”

Sweet, yes, but what — if anything — does this have to do with toilet paper? Like the product, “sometimes [mom] had to be softer, sometimes she had to be stronger,” the copy reads.

If you’re dad wondering where your commercial is, reps for Angel Soft say they meant no disrespect by acknowledging single and divorced mothers on Father’s Day.

“Absolutely not,” Todd Wingfield, a senior brand manager for the company told Ad Age. “We celebrate families in all forms, shapes and sizes. Our vision is that this is the first in a series of unique stories we’ll be sharing. Dads also play an important role and exemplify those traits of being soft and strong every day.”

Big Slick: Celebs Gather in Kansas City to Focus on Family, Charity This Father’s Day Weekend

Back in 2010 I called two friends from my hometown of Overland Park, Kansas with an idea for a charity poker tournament. The friends were Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, and the goal was to have fun with our family and friends while raising $ 50K or so for Children’s Mercy Hospital. It took nine weeks to plan. I named the event Big Slick, and celebrated as year one exceeded expectations both in regard to total money raised and the generosity of all those involved — including friends like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, George Wendt and Will Forte who flew in for the cause.

This weekend marks the 6th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser. It’s also Father’s Day. And while the holiday overlap wasn’t intentional, it beautifully highlights everything Big Slick has grown to be about over the past five years. The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family — and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet — who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $ 2.2MM it’s raised (a record $ 1MM in 2014) possible.

Throughout the months leading up to Big Slick, it really is a familial effort that makes it all happen. My sister Julie and brother-in-law Mark are on the organization board along with Paul’s mother and sister, Jason’s mom, David’s sister, Eric’s sister… not to mention volunteer committees full of countless childhood and college friends. It’s an annual family reunion of sorts that keeps us connected to our roots, introduces new friends to a city that we love, rallies the entire region around charity and continually humbles and inspires us — all while having fun.

The fun of Big Slick weekend includes a variety of fundraising events ranging from celebrity vs. celebrity softball on the field at Royals’ Kaufman Stadium to song and dance numbers and high-ticket auction items. However, the best part of the weekend is always away from the crowds. It’s the hours spent in the halls at Children’s Mercy. Those moments in the hospital are also what brings us, all the volunteers and our celebrity friends — most of whom have no personal connection to Kansas City or the Midwest — back to support Big Slick year after year. Once you meet the children and their parents, hear their stories, meet the nurses and staff… there’s no denying that it’s worth taking the weekend to help these individuals — even if it means being away from your own kids on Father’s Day in order to support these fathers.

There’s an incredible documentary called Inside Pediatrics that was filmed at Children’s Mercy last year, narrated by Paul Rudd and including a glimpse of Big Slick weekend. Whether you’re familiar with the Kansas City area or not, it’s a moving look at the current work being done in child medicine and the challenges faced by our neighbors impacted by illness. It’s what inspires me. This Father’s Day or any day — whether in your hometown or current town — I encourage you to find what inspires you to act. Making a difference could start with something as simple as an idea and phone call. To learn more about Big Slick, visit BigSlickKC.org or Crowdrise.com/BigSlick.

4 Reasons Fathers in Remarriage Walk on Eggshells

I’ve worked with thousands of step-couples* and it’s not an exaggeration to say that they are suffering (there is a 62-74 percent divorce rate in second marriages with children).

2015-03-06-1425679589-4684280-FrustratedMan.jpg

For the majority of fathers I work with, they suffer because they often feel like they’re walking on eggshells with their new partners when it comes to the topic of their children.

I’ve also found that the majority of men can’t stand conflict and would prefer to avoid it at all costs. They keep a lot of pain to themselves and that’s a shame.

So what do they worry about that is so difficult for them to talk about?

1. They worry about whether their new partner accepts and loves their kids.

Most fathers have high hopes of a “blended” family. They naturally desire that their children love their new partner and that his partner loves his children. He may find if he asks his partner if she loves his kid, an awkward silence or hesitation ensues. Love takes time to cultivate and can’t be imposed on anyone, especially those who are not biologically connected, but it’s a tough pill for many men to swallow. They want to talk about their children and they should be able to, but they often get mixed messages from their partners and are confused as to what to bring up. It becomes unsafe to talk about their children for several reasons. Either their partner doesn’t understand his kids because they aren’t the parent or because they’re more interested in talking about other things. They may be critical of his children and many fathers quietly give up and keep their thoughts about their children to themselves.

And if the truth be told, they also admit that when their partners aren’t at home when they’re with their children, they can relax. They don’t have to be looking over their shoulders to see if they are being constantly examined, inspected and judged. They can rough house more with the kids, let the chores go, eat in the family room and make as many loud noises as they want.

2. They worry about their new partners disapproving of their parenting.

Clinical experience shows that many fathers, post-divorce, become more permissive in their parenting. There are varying reasons for this, one of them being that a lot of fathers feel shame and guilt for putting their kids through divorce and not being able to provide a biologically intact family. Many get 50 percent parenting time and others much less. They don’t want to spend the precious time they have with their kids being strict and enforcing rules.

Many women don’t agree with this type of parenting and many men feel talked down to and judged about their parenting styles. A lot of men would rather just shutdown than talk about it.

3. They worry about communicating with their ex and upsetting their new partner.

Fathers communicate with their exes about the kids and find that their new partners may have problems with this communication or the amount of it. This is challenging especially given that “co-parenting” is foisted on divorced couples as the gold standard (whether this is a good idea is another topic for discussion). They have the desire or feel obligated to talk to the mother of their children and of course should be able to when it comes to the kids.

However, many women are threatened by the interactions their partner has with his ex. Some demand daily accountings. They want to know how many emails, how many texts, and how many calls have been exchanged.

Men get tired of what feels to them like interrogations and end up retreating or even lying about their interactions with the ex so as not to upset their partner or start the inevitable fight.

4. They worry about being put in the middle and disappointing both their new partner and their kids.

Fathers may feel that for a good part of their daily existence they’re not pleasing anyone. Wednesday Martin, Ph.D., author of Stepmonster says, “Dad likely fears that if he angers his ex or the kids, he won’t see them as much, and feels guilty that the kids went through a divorce.” Men also fear angering their partners.

They feel pulled by the needs of their new partners (especially if their partner doesn’t have children) and by their children. They find it tough to find a good balance and often feel overwhelmed.

Most fathers want to be both supportive partners and good parents to their children. Many of them live with a nagging fear that what they are doing isn’t enough, they aren’t enough, and at some point, their partners and their kids may have had enough of them.

This is no way to live.

The encouragement is for men to tell the truth to the women they are with. Walking on eggshells is an exhausting job. While this may seem simple enough, for many men it’s challenging to say what’s on their minds. Any partner, male or female, should be open to hearing their partner’s feelings and concerns. If their partners aren’t open to hearing them or these conversations tend to end in a fight, it’s time to pursue professional counseling with a therapist who is knowledgeable about or specializes in stepfamily issues.

• When I use the term “step-couple,” I mean a couple, where one or both have children from a previous relationship, are dating, living with or married to one another.
