Algae Raincoat, 3-D-printed Faux Fur On View at Cooper Hewitt’s Nature-inspired Triennial

TRY THIS AT HOME: An edible algae raincoat and 3-D-printed faux fur are among the innovative concepts on view in “Nature — Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.”
The twofold exhibition is on view at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York and the Cube design museum in Kerkrade, Netherlands, through Jan. 20.
Interdisciplinary designer and researcher Charlotte McCurdy developed a carbon negative plastic that is made from marine algae. The bio-based plastic is also biodegradable. Made entirely from food-grade materials, she could eat her raincoat and be totally fine. While artist friends have suggested, “That’s the piece — film yourself eating the raincoat,” McCurdy is not convinced. Her aim is to start conversations with people about how much of the built environment is intrinsically complicit in climate change because of its chemistry. “There is an emerging and in some cases, well-established suite of tools that would allow us to have things like plastic be carbon negative. That changes the story that we are offering to consumers from ‘the best you can to do is be less bad’ to ‘you can start to do good with the things you do, the things you buy, the things you give as gifts,’” she said.

Cornelia Guest Launching Faux Furs With Donna Salyers

Cornelia Guest understands better than most the upsides of enduring.
Aside from using her animal-friendly beliefs to start her namesake accessories and lifestyle label, she put her vegan cooking skills to use in a cookbook and catering business. And now, the designer has joined forces with Donna Salyers’ Fabulous Furs to create a faux fur collection. Monday morning’s wilting heat had not diminished her enthusiasm for the project in any way, as she tried on various faux fur jackets and encouraged visitors at the New York Now trade show to do the same.
While taking a look at one of her recent collections and asking about future categories, O The Oprah Magazine’s Adam Glassman suggested Guest connect with Salyers. So she did, phoning the company founder and leaving a voicemail, Salyers’ daughter and the company’s wholesale director Amanda van Rooyen said Monday. “My mom was hitting the floor. She said, ‘Cornelia Guest?!’ Because she knew C.Z. Guest.”
The designer is the daughter of the late socialite C.Z. Guest whose impeccable style is known to have stood the test of time. Guest’s name also resonates with strangers, having been known as the Debutante of the Decade in the Eighties, appeared in feature films and

Faux Fur: Better Than the Real Thing?

Something was different at Stella McCartney’s pre-fall presentation in January. The format was the usual: Take over a fancy-yet-personal New York City venue, in this case the top floor of the Upper East Side’s James Burden Mansion, which houses the Convent of the Sacred Heart’s Lower School, and deck it out like a playground for adult-size children. The models were playing lawn sports in updated versions of McCartney’s classic tailoring and knits. Then there was the girl playing Putt-Putt in what appeared to be a shaggy, Mongolian fur vest.
It was fake. Anyone with passing knowledge of McCartney’s politics is aware that she considers real fur — and leather, for that matter — anathema. And indeed the fuzzy vests, coats and hats in the pre-fall collection were tagged with patches that read “Fur Free Fur.”
The designer’s decision to put product out there that even imitated fur didn’t come lightly. “We have been looking at fake furs for years, but never felt it was the right message for us to promote the look of fur,” says McCartney. “But moreover, the material and fabrics that we kept seeing as a substitute were just not great nor inspiring enough to really be able to
