Catching up With Saks Potts, Instagram’s Favorite Winter Coats

The fur industry might be attracting protest, but Saks Potts — a Copenhagen-based fashion and outerwear label — has Millennials and Gen-Z trendsetters lining up to buy its fox, lamb and mink-trimmed coats.
Saks Potts has lured a new generation to expensive coats by making luxury outerwear part of larger pop culture. An endless list of global pop stars have sported one of their designs with Cardi B, K-pop fashion plate Jennie Kim of Blackpink and budding LatinX phenomenon Rosalía among the label’s fans. Their coats, simultaneously ostentatious and cool (typically $ 850 to $ 2,000), are offered in ice cream shop palettes and strike an aspirational nerve with their laissez-faire styling and emphasis on youth culture. Founded in 2014 by Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts, the brand is now stocked in around 80 stores globally — including Bergdorf Goodman and Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysees.

While an integral part of Copenhagen’s new wave fashion movement, both Saks and Potts find inspiration for their collections through travel. And thus, the designers touched down in New York earlier this month to take in the city’s Christmas lights, visit FIT’s research library and meet with their local retailers including Nordstrom and Kith. Rick Ross ft. Gunplay “Nobody’s Favorite,” Tyga “Ayy Macarena” & More | Daily Visuals 12.17.19

Rick Ross "Nobody's Favorite"

Source: Epic / Epic Records

Gunplay’s been down with Rick Ross for a decade now so it’s kinda surprising that he and the Bawse haven’t exactly dropped a gang of videos together, but today we get a rare installment into their duo clip library.

Today the Southern brethren decide to add one to that category as they team up with “Nobody’s Favorite” which features lots of rump shaking (like, A LOT), iced out jewelry (lots of that too) and a machete wielding Gunplay terrorizing the ops.

Tyga meanwhile shows and prove that the Kardashian Kurse hasn’t touched him as his rap career done continues to flourish and for his clip to “Ayy Macarena” revisits 90’s pop culture dance phenomenon while recreating scenes from Jim Carrey’s The Mask.

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from soWayv, Peso Peso and more.

Our Favorite Nike Athletic Socks Are a Great Deal at Macy’s

Guys, don’t skimp on the socks.

There are a few things in life worth paying a little extra for. A decent mattress comes to mind. Good beer certainly qualifies. Toilet paper is definitely a get-what-you-pay-for kind of item. And great socks should be on that list as well.

One of our favorite socks is made by Nike—and clearly, we’re not alone. Nike athletic socks come in a handy six-pack, in crew, quarter, ankle, and no-show styles. They’re available in white or black. Best of all, they have over 800 reviews at Macy’s alone, and still manage a perfect five-star rating. So you should head over to Macy’s today and get a great deal on a six-pack of Nike socks for just $ 20.

Fact is, socks are one of the most knocked-off garments in the world. When we buy socks at our local discount store, or even at various places online (yep, even Amazon), there’s no guarantee that they’re authentic, or are truly made by the brand that’s listed on the label. We know that. We know we’re taking a chance when buying discounted socks, and that’s fine—if we’re in a pinch.

But we also know to temper our disappointment when they wear out their softness and stability in a matter of months, or completely fall apart after a few runs through the washer. A better solution? Buy a known brand from a seller you trust.

We love these Nike socks because they’re soft and comfortable, and they’ll last for dozens, if not hundreds, of washes. At the gym, they’re tough enough to withstand the most severe punishment, whether we’re running, balling, or lifting. And on the street, they’re great for everyday.

Honestly, we rock the black ones to the office all the time; they’re way more comfortable than synthetic dress socks, even if we’re wearing loafers.

And they’re ideal for boots. In fall and winter, dress socks just don’t cut it. We need full-length, thick socks to keep our toes warm and our footing secure. And really need our socks to dry relatively quickly if we step in a slush or puddle. These Nike athletic socks make great winter socks.

When it comes to socks, you definitely get what you pay for. And besides, twenty bucks for six pairs of socks is a great deal! So get over to Macy’s today and get six pairs of excellent socks that will last you for a long time to come. No matter where your feet take you.

Get It: Pick up a 6-pack of Nike Athletic Socks ($ 20) at Macy’s

Our Favorite Sandals and Flip-Flops for Summer

Summer is the time when dressed-down, casual looks become stylish. Chinos, short sleeves, and linen are back, and it’s acceptable to finish off the look with your favorite open-toed shoes. Using sandals and flip flops can give your summer outfits a laid-back feel, plus they can be comfortable and stylish too.

“A lot of guys are self-conscious about sandals, but if you like them, you should wear them — guys need to have a look that they like,” menswear icon Sid Mashburn says. “Function is more important than fashion, and sandals are just good summer shoes. But it can be surprising how cool they are, how chic they are, and how elegant they are. They hit all the buttons.”

Here are some of the best sandals and flip-flops for summer, whether you’re going out for a day on the lake or a night out on the town.

Reef Draftsmen

Here’s your perfect party sandal. Reef outfitted their leather Draftsman sandal with a bottle opener in the footbed so you can pop open your brew anywhere, anytime. The low-profile design comes in two rich colors (we’re fans of the chocolate leather). And just because they look simple, doesn’t mean they aren’t well designed. An EVA midsole and arch support cushion your foot and keep you comfortable no matter where you’re headed.

[$ 60; reef.com]

Hari Mari Dunes II

Thanks to their savvy design, Hari Mari’s flip-flops will have you ready for the sand dunes, the campsite, a hike through a National Park, or a day out on the water. This pair comes with non-scuffing rubber outsoles, memory foam toe-post grips to keep the blisters away, and a beveled sole edge that helps prevent tripping. Plus, Hari Mari donates one percent of the purchase price to help kids with pediatric cancer.

Hurley Lunar

These flops combine low-key styling with serious comfort. They’re contoured to match the shape of your foot and made with Nike’s soft and springy Lunarlon foam, so you can expect a good fit and a soft step-in feel. Plus, the unique grooved gum outsole prevents slips and looks great, too.

Bogs Dylan Sandal

It wasn’t until recently that Oregon-based Bogs, which makes insulated boots for farmers, started making sandals. The Dylan Sandal speaks to that hardworking everyman heritage by packing value into a pair of affordable flip-flops. A Rebound rubber strap and footbed offer all-day support, and a tacky outsole grips wet terrain.

[from $ 15; amazon.com]

Freewaters Basecamp

These are the ultimate cushy campsite-ready sandals. The Basecap features a memory foam version of Therm-a-Rest cushioning (through a partnership with the sleeping-pad maker), giving a whole new meaning to the word “footbed.” Additionally, the padded strap is made of vegan leather and is water friendly—just like the Freewaters company, which funds clean water projects around the world by donating a portion from each of their sales.

[$ 45; freewaters.com]

Rainbow Single-Layer Classic

The Rainbow Single-Layer Classic flip-flop features arch support, a non-slip bottom, and double stitched straps for durability. The finished leather, along with a polished top sole, makes for a more dressed-up look than other sandals can muster.

[$ 54; rainbowsandals.com]

Havaianas Power Flip Flops

Havaianas is practically synonymous with the word with “flip-flops.” The Havaianas Power Sandal design, however, moves away from the classic thong: Its sole has ergonomic grooves that align with the pressure points of the foot for cushion-like comfort and flexibility. But the perforated matte strap and sporty style keep it from looking too soft.

Adidas Adilette Slide

When it comes to slides, there’s nothing more iconic than the Adilette. First introduced in the ’70s, these simple sandals are still going strong today, although they’ve moved beyond their original purpose as post-match shower shoes for soccer players and morphed into poolside essentials. Quick-drying and available in a bunch of bold colors, they’re a great pick for your next tropical vacation.

Nike Benassi Slide

Prefer the swoosh over the stripes? Try Nike’s Benassi slide. It has a Phylon foam midsole for shock absorption and comes in several striking colorways to match any style.

Astral Filipe

The Filipe earns high marks for versatility. Astral Designs made it very water friendly, with durable outsoles that latch onto wet rocks and patches of rubber on the footbed that help keep your foot glued down even when soaked. Thinking of hitting the trail? Attach the accessory strap to get a lockdown fit around your heel.

[$ 75; astraldesigns.com]

Birkenstock Arizona Sandal

The classic Birkenstock Arizona sandal has been the outdoorsman’s go-to for generations, and for good reason. Its high-quality construction includes a molded footbed, a deep heel cup, and durable materials like leather and reinforced cork—and it’s available in waterproof versions, too.

[$ 135; birkenstock.com]

Chacos Z/2 Classic

Hikers favor Chacos, and it’s not hard to see why. The durable design of this sandal is rugged enough to protect your toes out on the trail while still managing to pull off a low-maintenance and minimalistic look. Now the decades-old Z sandal has been updated to the Z/2, which is composed of only eight parts but allows for a custom fit thanks to the toe loop, adjustable straps, and molded podiatrist-certified footbed. Added bonus: The sandals have an antimicrobial treatment that keeps away stink.

[$ 105; chacos.com]

New Balance PureAlign Recharge

Comfort is key when it comes to a pair of sandals, and New Balance’s PureAlign Recharge makes sure your puppies are comfortable for a day of exploring. Featuring a contoured footbed, arch support, a durable outsole and synthetic upper with mesh liner, your feet are in for a real treat.

[$ 50; newbalance.com]

Shoes.com

Brooks Brothers Leather Criss-Cross Sandal

The minimalistic construction and leather design is comparable to top-of-the-line brands, such as Prada and Gucci, but it won’t break the bank. Calfskin leather creates a trendy style that is subdued enough for everyday wear, and the tonal stitching offers a nice luxurious touch.

[$ 168; brooksbrothers.com

Brooks Brothers

Teva Original Universal

Tevas are some of the most trail-ready sandals you can buy, thanks to their hook and loop closures, universal strapping system, and ultra-durable rubber outsole. But with their rich colors and supple suede footbed, you can be sure-footed between routes on the crag and head straight to the bar for drinks afterward without bringing a change of shoes.

Our Favorite Men’s Care Brand Has A New Line: Hair by Harry’s

With the influx of razor-by-mail companies lately, we keep coming back to Harry’s. We’ve never been disappointed. Harry’s has amazing shave products as well as razors, with low prices and fantastic customer service. And now our favorite men’s care brand has just released a line of hair care and grooming products that are as awesome as their shaving gear: Hair by Harry’s.

2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner

Harry’s new 2 in 1 ($ 7) is a quick, nourishing way to clean and condition your hair without stripping it of its natural oils and essences. It lathers up nicely and rinses clean, and then you’re done. No fooling around with a separate bottle of conditioner, no waiting 60 seconds for some magical conditioning effect to take place. That’s it, you’re done.

harrys
Harry's

And it has a pleasant scent that isn’t overly fragrant, with light notes of lavender as well as bracing peppermint, and soothing eucalyptus. It’s great for all hair types, plus it’s paraben-, dye-, and sulfate-free. With enough moisturizing properties to make it okay to use it everyday.

Now you’re ready to move on to another of Harry’s fantastic hair grooming products.

Sculpting Gel

Harry’s Sculpting Gel ($ 8) is perfect for guys who want a light but firm hold on their coif. It locks in any style in any shape, but remains soft and gentle to the touch. Unless, of course, you’re going for a slicker look, in which case you comb it through while your hair is wet.

harrys
Harry's

It won’t fade or flake away light some other gels, and there’s no alcohol—so it won’t dry or damage your hair. And it rinses out clean at the end of the day. Paraben-free, sulfate-free, and never tested on animals, Harry’s Sculpting Gel has a light and refreshing scent, with hints of lemon and fresh herbs. It leaves your hair firmly in place, and won’t come off on your—or anyone else’s—fingers.

Taming Cream

For long-haired dudes after a more natural look, Harry’s has something for you as well. For an unruly mane that desires a soft hold and a carefree finish, you need Harry’s Taming Cream ($ 8). It’s lightweight cream that’s ideal for curly, coarse, thick hair, leaving it naturally casual without feeling stiff or sticky.

harry's
Harry's

Best of all, Taming Cream styles, moisturizes, and conditions as well. And to paraphrase an old ad slogan, just a little dab will do. So your hair comes away looking natural and free of harsh chemicals and powerful smells.

Texturizing Putty

This stuff is great for guys who want to look like they put zero effort into their hair. With a matte finish and malleable hold, Harry’s Texturizing Putty ($ 12) delivers subtle definition without stickiness or stiffness. It’s ideal for professionals, guys with short hair who want keep it tidy without looking like they spent more than a few minutes in front of the mirror.

harrys
Harry's

Just rub a dab between your hands to soften it up, then smooth and work it through dry (or towel-dry) hair until you get your desired shape and style. It leaves your hair smelling rich and woodsy, and lets everyone know how you feel about your hair: There are far more important things for a man to worry about.

So if you’re looking for great hair care products from a reliable company, stuff that’s made by guys, for guys, check out Hair by Harry’s hair care products. Pick yourself up some amazing razors while you’re there. And don’t sleep on their awesome shower products.

This Direct-to-Consumer Brand Produces Some of Our Favorite Footwear

Ethical fashion is exploding, and it’s about time. Thanks to companies like Patagonia, Faherty, and Nisolo, consumers are moving away from cheap attire from fast-fashion brands and toward quality apparel made with ethically made products sourced from environmentally and socially responsible supply chains.

Three Sustainable Clothing Companies That Are (Figuratively) Killing It

If you haven’t yet heard of Nisolo, you soon will. The Nashville-based shoe and accessory manufacturer runs on one simple premise: If you’re paying too little for a product, chances are someone in the supply chain is getting the short end of the stick. And if you’re paying too much? That person is probably you.

Patrick Woodyard, Nisolo‘s founder and CEO, has created a quality shoe that will last for years, while being fair to the artisans and factory workers who actually produce the line—and to the planet from which it reaps its resources.

How Is Nisolo Different?

Most consumers, blinded by the allure of cheap prices, are unaware that expansion of the global fashion industry the last few decades has been violently unjust, both for workers and for the planet. Low wages and poor working conditions are rampant; fully 98 percent of clothing industry employees work in unsafe conditions and/or receive wages below fair trade standards. And with exorbitant water usage, irresponsible waste disposal, non-biodegradable fibers, and filthy carbon emissions from coal-powered factories, the fashion industry is among the top five of the most pollutive industries in the world.

23 Menswear Brands Making the Next Generation of American Classics

Nisolo takes a direct-to-consumer approach so it can offer a fair price to the consumer while ensuring the workers in its supply chain are offered fair trade wages, benefits, and a healthy working environment. At the company’s own factory in Trujillo, Peru, Nisolo offers lessons in health, nutrition, English, and even yoga to its employees and their families. Meanwhile, the company insists its partner factories champion ethical causes as well. All producers and employees must be 18 years or older, and receive safe, healthy working conditions and healthcare and wages beyond fair trade standards.

And for every pair of Nisolo shoes sold, a contribution is made to help protect forests in the Amazon Basin.

What About the Shoes?

Nisolo shoes and boots exude class and effortless style that’s rooted in versatility, comfort, and quality. The leather is responsibly sourced from tanneries committed to the ethical treatment of animals (the leather is always a byproduct of the meat industry) and the implementation of eco-friendly waste disposal systems.

From wingtips to boots to duffel bags, Nisolo is turning the fast-fashion industry upside down with quality products, responsibly sourced, and ethically made. They may cost a bit more, but the quality is unparalleled. And with Nisolo, you know you’re not getting the short end of the stick.

Listed below are some of our favorite Nisolo products. Check out the full line here.

Cher’s Favorite Designer Bob Mackie to Speak at 92Y With Fern Mallis

Theatergoers, who haven’t lined up tickets for “The Cher Show,” can catch her famed fashion designer Bob Mackie at a Jan. 29 Q&A at 92Y.
Looking to give the glitzy bedazzler his due after more than 50 years in the fashion industry, Fern Mallis said she has been trying to get him to commit to the stage for a year. About a year ago, the Fashion Icons interviewer started the process. “Booking people for this is not exactly easy,” she said, adding that news reports of the Cher-inspired Broadway show only made her more impassioned to seek him out.
Mallis said she first met Mackie more than 30 years ago through the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “I remember going to one of his shows in the tents at Bryant Park that was just mind-boggling. It was so theatrical that it was like watching a Broadway show. The crowd was just on their feet. It wasn’t about the latest trends or fads. It was spectacle.”
While Cher remains perennially linked to Mackie’s career, he worked with Carol Burnett for 11 years, and dressed standouts like Judy Garland and Diana Ross, too. Mackie also sketched the nude-colored rhinestone-encrusted gown that Marilyn Monroe wore

Colin Jost on His Favorite SNL Jokes and Playing Football With Aaron Rodgers

Over the years, Saturday Night Live has earned a reputation for its cast and staff putting in long hours and grueling weeks to get a show on the air. From marathon sessions writing jokes, to starting from scratch on skits that aren’t working, it’s basically a six-day-a-week job during the season. As head writer and co-anchor of “Weekend Update” on SNL, Colin Jost knows this all too well.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s 5 Best ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketches

Jost has been working on the show for over a decade, having started back in 2005 as a writer before rising up to be one of the co-head writers. Over that time, Jost has figured out how to balance all his responsibilities to get things done. For all the craziness that can go on when you’re writing comedy for hours on end, Jost’s tips are pretty simple.

“It’s a little exercise and sleep,” Jost told Men’s Journal. “It’s crazy, because you do the show every week and then you kind of forget what you did last week, because you’re working on the current week, and on it goes. If I can do some kind of exercise three or four days a week, it helps keep me sane. And I know sleep is obvious, but it can really help things to wake up fresh and work more efficiently the next day, rather than stay up all night and work like I did back when I was like 22.”

Jost got to put some of those tips to work this summer while starring with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on a new campaign for Izod. Jost gets pretty physical in the video, which he co-wrote and makes fun of some of the more traditional menswear ads and clichés of the past.

I became an expert with nunchucks, and now I have a pair in my office so I can try and intimidate young writers.

In the campaign, Jost and Rodgers teamed up to make some meta jokes about those traditional ads, and show off some of Jost’s other “skills” in the process—like playing ping-pong with nunchucks:

Jost spoke with Men’s Journal about his favorite Saturday Night Live skits he got to work on, his essential travel tips, playing football with Aaron Rodgers, and who he’s rooting for this NFL season.

What are some of your favorite jokes you’ve worked on for Weekend Update?

I really liked writing and working on the “Drunk Uncle” character that Bobby Moynihan would do was one I enjoyed, and he was just so good at it. I also really enjoyed the character Cecily Strong would do, the “Girl You Wish You Didn’t Start a Conversation With At a Party,” and writing for the David Ortiz “Big Papi” character that Kenan Thompson would do. The three of them are all such great performers and I enjoyed writing those characters and coming up with jokes for them. They’re all incredible actors so it’s crazy to have written some of them, and then be on “Weekend Update” alongside them as characters. It’s so fun to be out there with them and see how much the audience loves them. That’s a special thing I’m enjoying more now that I’m not constantly a ball of nerves out there so you can go out there and enjoy those moments and have fun.

What was it like working with Aaron Rodgers and getting to show off some of your football skills in the Izod video?

The whole crew was great for it and they made the experience really enjoyable, it felt like a vacation in that sense. Aaron was really funny in it, and he has a lot more experience at this point with commercials then I do, so it was fun to see him set the tone and be really funny by playing it straight and get the tone right.

NFL Superstar Aaron Rodgers Talks Super Bowl LII, Loving ‘Game of Thrones,’ and Playing As Long As Tom Brady

You got pretty acrobatic in the video. Was that you doing all your own stunts?

Absolutely, I do all my own stunts. Sometimes, the way I do them is so impressive that you have to get someone else to do them, but I attempt all my own stunts and sometimes someone else eventually has to get in there. I may not be successful, but I try. The crazy skills competition was funny and I did actually get to learn to use nunchucks a little bit. I became an expert with nunchucks, and now I have a pair in my office so I can try and intimidate young writers [laughs]. I’m not really a skilled ping-pong player, so I had to learn a little bit of that on the fly too.

Colin Jost and Aaron Rodgers for Izod
Izod

What was it like being able to show your personality in a different setting than SNL?

It was liberating and fun to do it. I don’t get to film a lot of things on the show because I usually have my hands full with “Weekend Update” and writing a lot of other sketches, so it was really a lot of fun to get to do it. Being on the set like that was some of the most fun I’ve had in the moment of shooting something and it was just a really cool experience. It was easy in that sense to be working with someone like Aaron on it.

You do shows around the country and travel a lot during the year. Do you have any travel tips or any essential gear you always try to bring with you?

These days, definitely a phone charger. I still manage to somehow forget it even when I remember it. Something essential I think is a good is having a pair of shoes you can wear for everything when you’re on your trip. If you can wear them most days, that’s pretty big because they can take up a lot in your bag, and if you could only wear one pair of shoes for a week and get away with it—I am always happy doing that. Having multiple shoes on a trip is a lot if you’re just taking one bag. At this point, I’ve really streamlined things and I’ve learned through experience what to bring and what not to bring. I keep it as simple as I can, basically, if I can wear most of my outfit for the week right on the plane I’m pretty happy.

With football season about to start, do you have a team you root for?

I am a big New York Giants fan. I’m excited for the season and to see what Saquon Barkley can do. I’ll admit I’m also a big Aaron Rodgers fan as a football player, so it was pretty cool to appear with him in a project like this. It’s pretty rare you get to do that with an athlete you watch play, so it was really cool to work with him.

They hit all the buttons.” Here are some great open-toed options whether you’re going out for a day on the lake or a night out on the town.

Levi’s Vintage Clothing Is Reviving Albert Einstein’s Favorite Leather Jacket

How smart was Albert Einstein? One of the first things he purchased after coming to the United States in 1933 was an unlined brown leather jacket by Levi’s. A colleague at Princeton University once wrote that it “solved [his] coat problem for years.” Einstein wore it so often while enjoying a pipe of tobacco that when Christie’s auction house sold it in July 2016, curators noted that it still smelled like smoke. Levi’s Vintage Clothing bought the jacket, and its designers will release a limited edition of 500 replicas on February 19. Each one comes with a bottle of fragrance by D.S. & Durga that blends the smells of pipe tobacco, papyrus manuscript, and vintage leather. Will wearing it make you think like a genius? That’s relative.

For example, a cleanser with a hydrating ingredient like coconut oil can pull triple duty, providing enough slip for a shave, purging dirt without drying, and giving hair a thorough clean. And a face moisturizer with an emollient like shea butter can double as a styling tool for your hair or beard. “Softening your beard and the skin underneath with a moisturizer helps a beard grow better and look healthier,” says Oscar Blandi, the New York grooming specialist who has tamed Jimmy Fallon’s mop. Rising Literary Stars Dress Up As Their Favorite Book Characters

Every writer began as a reader, a brilliant new photo feature from New York Magazine’s The Cut reminds us. The Cut photographed and interviewed five acclaimed women authors, each embodying a favorite literary character, in a piece on “literary heroines” appearing in the Nov. 16 issue of the magazine.

We may know Hanya Yanagihara as the author of this year’s melancholy epic A Little Life, and Angela Flournoy as the scribe behind breakout novel The Turner House — both finalists for the National Book Award in Fiction, which will be awarded this week.

But did you know Yanagihara feels a special connection to Tom Ripley, the scheming social climber of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley? “The villains,” she told The Cut, “are always the characters the author has the most fun writing.”

Flournoy, on the other hand, was profoundly affected by Toni Morrison’s classic Sula. “The first time I read it, I had never really read a book that was pretty plainly just about black female friendship,” she recalled.

Check out the full feature, including authors Alexandra Kleeman and Emily St. John Mandel, at The Cut.

Why You Should Match Your Eyeshadow to Your Favorite Jeans This Season

denim inspired eyeshadow

In light of Vogue’s current denim marathon, we’re suddenly feeling drawn to all things blue: blue flowers, blue sweaters, and, best of all, blue makeup. For girls who live in their jeans (and aren’t afraid to experiment a little with their beauty look), what better way to complement those crisp new skinnies than with a matching swipe of eyeshadow? Bold shades of azure, sky, and sapphire were spotted on the recent Spring ’16 runways at shows like Diane von Furstenberg, Dries Van Noten, and Marc Jacobs, where they were painted onto lids and smudged on lash lines with painterly flair. And rest assured, there’s a color and technique to suit every taste. Think of it like choosing a denim wash: Some of us prefer faded vintage jeans, while others stick to classic navy or ’70s-era cobalt. And no matter which shade you choose, you can’t go wrong with a simple scribble of liner (à la Jonathan Saunders) or a bright, Pop Art smudge of cream (seen at Missoni). In the slideshow above, we paired the season’s best street style jeans with the products to match; true denim-heads will want to try them all.

What Your Favorite Go-To Clothing Color Says About You Personality

By Christine Schoenwald

I recently read a piece in The Elephant Journal by Alex Myles where she talks about how the color of our clothes reveals a lot about our personality type. It made me consider how dressing can be a form of personal expression and how the clothes we wear send out messages to the world.

You can tell a great deal about a person by the colors they wear.

Color plays a major role in our lives by the way it influences our moods and emotions. You wouldn’t think that a color can make you feel secure or make you feel un-easy, but it can. When you choose to use a color or avoid it, that action can reveal much about your personality.

Even if you aren’t consciously aware of the symbolic meanings of certain colors, your subconscious is. What one color means to you may have a completely different meaning to me.

Here’s a guide to what the color of your clothing may be saying about you (with or without your knowledge):

Black colors: It used to be that black was the color of mourning. You only wore black while you were grieving. Luckily, wearing black is no longer just to respect the dead, and it’s perfectly acceptable to wear it at any time.

Punk, Goth, and clubs kids are known to wear a lot of black, and almost every woman has that perfect black dress that’s flattering to her body in her closet. Black symbolizes extremes — all or nothing — and is a color of strength, power, sophistication, elegance, and authority.

Blue colors: Blue soothes and cools. When you wear blue, you’re broadcasting creativity, positivity, peace, loyalty, and you’re saying that you’ve decided to live by your own rules, and by your own truth. Because blue wearers think for themselves, they’re smart, have a quick wit, and are independent.

Brown colors: When you wear brown, you’re representing all things solid and grounded such as the color of the earth. Brown is the color that people associate with someone who’s stable, smart, and dependable (like the UPS driver).
2015-10-13-1444750163-3124889-brown.png

Grey shades: One thing we all know is that there are many different variations, shades if you will, of grey. Wearing grey can wash you out, and make you seem indifferent, depressed, and apathetic. It can also seem suppressive and give off the impression of a lack of confidence. There’s a reason the classic color of sweatpants is grey.
2015-10-13-1444750266-3276750-grey.png
Photo: H&M

Silver colors: Wearing metallic colors like silver isn’t just for hookers or socialites any more; metallic clothing comes in everything from cute tops to sophisticated dresses. If you wear metallic, you’re letting the world know that you aren’t shy, but that you’re adventurous, up for anything, and hip.
2015-10-13-1444750340-2709379-silver.png
Photo: Macy’s

Not everybody can wear metallic; it reflects the light, which will make you look older, so either you’re young when you wear silver, or you’re a bad*ss.

Red colors: If you want to stand out and grab the spotlight, wear red. It’s the color of energy and is the symbol of life. An Indian bride wears red instead of white. Wearing red is empowering and can give you confidence. Red is also the color of sensuality, aggression, passion, and boldness.

Orange colors: Orange is known as the color that makes new possibilities happen. It’s creative, enthusiastic, and is associated with good times, warmth, and ambition. If you wear orange, you like to be the life of the party, and are in a positive, energizing, and engaging mood.
2015-10-13-1444750483-3690520-orange.png

Pink colors: Pink is very much associated with femininity, but when a man is comfortable with both the masculine and the feminine side to his personality, he can really rock a pink shirt or jacket. Pink is the unconditional love color and it’s known to sooth out aggression.
2015-10-13-1444750544-1192361-pink.png
Photo: H&M

Purple colors: Prince’s nickname of His Royal Purpleness is kind of redundant as purple is the color of royalty and is a symbol of wealth. If you want to convey that you’re rich — both of possessions and spirituality — then wear purple. Purple shows that you have a rich inner life, are intuitive, artistic, creative, and have great instincts about people.
2015-10-13-1444750619-3539065-purple.png
Photo: H&M

Yellow colors: There’s no mistaking yellow, as it’s logical, happy, cheerful, and optimistic. It has the power to bring out creativity, but is completely overpowering if too much is used (you don’t want to dress head to toe in yellow or you’ll look like Big Bird). Yellow encourages intelligence and inspiration, and is a good color to wear when you need that added boost to finish a work project or ace those exams.
2015-10-13-1444750674-5277481-yellow.png
Photo: H&M

Green colors: Nature and money are green and both things are very important. Green is a calming color and is associated with generosity, healing, and a rejuvenated state of mind. People who wear green are charismatic and care deeply about the feelings of others.
2015-10-13-1444750729-30744-green.png
Photo: H&M

White shades: Wearing white signifies cleansing and new beginnings. When you put on a white shirt or skirt, you feel as if you’re staring the day with a clean slate, and you appear to have a fresh and bright outlook. White is the color of balance, harmony, purity, and courage.
2015-10-13-1444750796-3886151-white.png

The color of clothing we wear tells the world and ourselves a little bit about us. We can use those colors to feel better and brighter. Once you know, you’ll have a secret method to feeling good about yourself and your day, even if that wasn’t the way it started out.

Happy Birthday Matt Damon! Celebrate with 15 Favorite Quotes From The Actor

Matt Damon turned 45 on October 8. The actor, writer, producer and screenwriter won an Academy Award–with Bed Affleck–for the screenplay, Good Will Hunting when he was just 27. But Damon has managed to stay incredibly grounded. On the British television show, the Graham Norton Show, he reflected about winning an Oscar when he was so young, “… I suddenly had this kinda thing wash over me where I thought, imagine chasing that and not getting it. And getting it finally in your eighties or your nineties with all of life behind you and realizing what an unbelievable waste… It can’t fill you up. If that’s a hole that you have, that won’t fill it. I felt so blessed to have that awareness at 27.”

We celebrate The Martian star with our favorite quotes from the actor, including memorable lines from Good Will Hunting. Click to this Parade.com story to read all 15 quotes.

Marimekko Makes Moves in Paris: A New Direction for Jackie O’s Favorite Everyday Label

marimekko

In 1960, as her husband was campaigning for election as POTUS, Jacqueline Kennedy bought seven dresses from the Finnish print company Marimekko. Ka-pow! In a very early version of totally authentic and unmediated-by-agent product placement, this company won itself a little niche in American fashion folklore. But there is much more to Marimekko than Jackie O’s patronage—much more even than Maija Isola’s gorgeous 1964 Unikko floral print. In 2015, this is a significant international business, with 50 percent of its income generated by apparel sales.

That was the stat delivered by Anna Teurnell, Marimekko’s creative director of one year, as she showcased her contribution. “And 91 percent of our employees are women!” chimed in Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, the company’s president. Teurnell launched & Other Stories, the highly successful, higher-priced diffusion brand of H&M, before landing at Marimekko, and you could see the building blocks of a diversification strategy in the mac, the parka, and the poppy-pink cargo pants in her lineup. The soul of Marimekko, though, is print, and here it was at the fore in a series of perfectly lovable pieces in a mixture of cotton and crepe. That orange dress was a particular stunner. “We want to bring color into ordinary life,” said Teurnell—or, in Jackie O’s case, an extraordinary life. Marimekko showed it is still doing today what it was doing then: delivering unpretentious pop and pattern.

J.K. Rowling Shoots Down Your Favorite ‘Harry Potter’ Fan Theories

Sorry, Muggles. J.K. Rowling is going all Avada Kedavra on some of your favorite “Harry Potter” fan theories.

Up to this point, fans of the books and movies have analyzed the story so much that they’ve come up with a number of theories that are so crazy they have to be true.

As it turns out, nope, they’re just crazy. Here are the theories that must not be named anymore:

Ron Weasley is not a time-traveling Albus Dumbledore.

No! Not this one!

In the books, there are a number of physical descriptions and plot points that show major similarities between Dumbledore and Ron, but after a fan asked about it, Rowling confirmed they aren’t the same person:

Bloody hell …

Also, Draco Malfoy is not a werewolf and Snape is not a vampire.

What? OK, she’s just pouring it on now.

Because of their physical descriptions and some peculiar activities in the books, Draco Malfoy and Snape were thought to secretly be a werewolf and a vampire, respectively. Draco’s physical changes that occur in the book are seen as the result of a werewolf curse by some, and Snape’s pale complexion was viewed as evidence he was in fact undead. Unfortunately, these are not the case either:

After that, Rowling was done crushing all our Muggle dreams for one day.

Don’t be too disappointed, though. Rowling has also confirmed some other fan theories, and with her new play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” coming to the stage, you can be sure more theories are on the way.

Why Coco Chanel’s Favorite Hat Is Back on Top

boater hat trend

If Thom Browne has his way, then boaters might replace the floppy sun hat and the festival-girl flower crown as the topper of choice come next spring. It makes sense that the designer, whose roots are in menswear, would be attracted to this ribbon-banded straw, worn by sailors, English school boys, and well-dressed gents the world over.

Coco Chanel is credited with elevating this humble hat to new fashion heights, just as she did jersey fabric. Heightening the impact of Browne’s show further still were Jimmy Paul’s Pippi Longstocking stick-your-finger-in-a-socket braids, over which Stephen Jones’s topless boaters were layered like lifesavers—truly a crowning moment, indeed.

From Naomi Campbell to Karlie Kloss, the Models That Fashion Week’s Favorite Faces are Crushing On

model crushes

Each season, a storm of aspirational hair, flawless skin, and anomalous features takes to the New York Fashion Week runways, resulting in a wave of rekindled and brand-new model crushes among the style set. We all have a girl who inspires a Where’s Waldo? moment as we seek to spot her in the frenzied crowd—whether just for the thrill, or to gather first-person intel on the newly shorn bob or fuzzy curls that we have a sudden urge to emulate. But what about the models themselves? We asked some of our favorite faces which of their fellow runway-walkers inspire their beauty routine and why. As it turns out, many of the crushes are shared—or even mutual.

My All Time Favorite Beauty Products and Why

Over the years I have tested and tossed a countless number of products. I like to keep up with the current trends and I enjoy testing out new things to find those hidden gems. More often than not, however, end up going back to my tried and true products that I have been using for years. I call these products my classics, and as long as they are on the market they will remain in my beauty arsenal forever. These products have never let me down and have been beneficial to me in my skin care, hair care and over all makeup routine. Below are my all time favorite products and why I love them so much.

Clearasil Daily Clear Daily Face Wash: 6.5 OZ

This face wash has worked wonders for me. It is better than any of the expensive face washes I have tried on the market. It is made from a gentle formula that is fragrance free and has never irritated my skin. I use it twice a day and it always leaves my skin feeling clean and soft.

Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths, Normal Skin, 66 Count

These face clothes come in so handy when I’m traveling. They are convenient and work great. I never have to worry about spills in my luggage when using these. They lather up wonderfully and I can use the cloth to get a deeper scrub into my skin. I am always left with skin that feels soft, fresh and clean.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, 16.9-Ounce Jar

I style my hair often and unfortunately that means my hair is exposed to a lot of heat. I leave this mask in my hair for about 10-15 minutes twice a week and it helps put the moisture back in my hair and keeps it looking healthy and shiny.

Batiste Dry Shampoo, Clean and Classic, 6.73 Ounce

I definitely don’t wash my hair everyday. On the in-between days I like to use this dry shampoo to pull out the excess oils in my hair. I have used many dry shampoos and I have found this one to be the best. It doesn’t leave a build up and my hair looks and feels clean even on the days it isn’t washed.

Clarisonic Mia 1 Skin Cleansing System, White

I love this little machine. My skin has never been smoother or brighter. The motion of the bristles gently scrub away imperfections and dead skin. It keeps my pores clean and evens out the texture of my skin. It comes with its own cleaners but I use the cleansers of my choice and still get amazing results.

Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer, Pink

I am a huge advocate of getting your eyebrows professionally done. We all know, however, that sometimes we just don’t get around to it and are left with growing caterpillars above our eyes. For these desperate times I use the Tweezerman Slant Tweezers. These tweezers have the ability to grab hold of the tiniest hairs that I used to struggle with using other brands. They are extremely precise, even on the finest of hairs.

The Balm Mary-lou Manizer Aka The Luminizer Shimmer, Highlighter and Eyeshadow, with Twinbeauty Brush

Highlighting and contouring has been around forever but has recently become a huge trend. Beauty bloggers across the world post instructional videos on how to get the perfect highlight and contour. This product has been a wonderful highlight for me and I believe it is good for any skin tone. It leaves a golden look to the skin providing it with a healthy glow. A little goes a long way with this product so be careful not to overdo it.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Dry, Cracked and Irritated Skin Protectant, 14 Ounce

I have suffered from extremely dry skin my whole life. This is a condition that seems even more apparent in the winter months. After I shower I apply this cream all over my body for some dry skin relief. I even carry some in my bag to apply on my hands throughout the day.

Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrips Professional Effects – Teeth Whitening Kit 20 Treatments

No more $ 400 whitening sessions at the dentist for me. For the past few years I have been using Crest White Strips every 12 to 18 months. The results are always mind blowing. After using these I notice I get a ton of complements on how white my smile is. I no longer have to deal with messy trays and goopy gels. These strips adhere nicely to my teeth and I only have to leave them on for 30 minutes a day. When the treatment is over I am always so impressed with the results.

Beauty Blender Original Blender Sponge – 0.15 oz

I know I talk about this product a lot but I cannot reiterate enough how helpful the beauty blender has been for my own application as well as the application of makeup on my clients. If you want airbrushed results without spending all that money on an airbrush machine I suggest giving this product a try. You wont regret it. I love how smooth my makeup looks after using the beauty blender to apply my foundation.

Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Normal, 4.0 fl oz

I have been using this product for well over 15 years now. Even when I try to swap out for some of the fancier products I still always come back to this. It does not flake like other moisturizers can and it looks great on the skin with or without makeup. I use this lotion every time I wash my face and it has never failed me. The formula is gentle, it doesn’t clog my pores and it leaves my skin looking hydrated all day.

The Ultimate Disney Dubsmash Has All Your Favorite Characters

Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear, Pluto and the Little Mermaid are just some of the beloved characters featured in this awesome Disney Dubsmash.

The compilation, which is going viral on Facebook, shows clips of a man named Dustin Hayes using the Dubsmash app so it appears as if he’s singing to the costumed characters at Walt Disney World.

He sings Foreigner’s “Cold As Ice” to Queen Elsa from “Frozen,” mimics Ariel’s vocal gymnastics in front of the Little Mermaid herself, smolders for Rapunzel and does The Village People’s “In The Navy” with Duffy, the bear known for his sailor attire… just to name a few.

But what makes the clip work so well is how the characters all gamely play along.

Check it out in the clip above.

The clip was uploaded to YouTube earlier this month, but has been going viral since it was posted on Facebook over the weekend by a North Carolina radio station.

“It’s still blowing my mind that everybody loves this video, I cannot believe that I have a viral video now,” Hayes wrote in the comments. “Thanks for all the love everybody!”

Hayes, who according to his Facebook page works at Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park, has also posted a few other Disney Dubsmash videos on YouTube,  which you can see right here. He also has an Instagram page full of Disney photos, including some unique character shots.

London Fashion Industry Favorite, Kids Company Charity, Set to Close

END OF AN ERA: Kids Company, the London charity that has long been a favorite of many a British fashion label, is set to close its doors on Wednesday after months of turmoil and the resignation of its chief executive officer Camila Batmanghelidjh, who founded the charity in 1996. The charity, whose aim was to help vulnerable, inner-city children, is closing over claims of financial mismanagement.
Labels including Fendi, Stella McCartney, Mulberry, Folli Follie and Matthew Williamson have all hosted events or collaborated with Kids Company in the past. Last year, Fendi organized an auction of its Peekaboo bags, designed by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Jerry Hall and Cara Delevingne, in aid of Kids Company. The event marked the opening of Fendi’s New Bond Street store.
In 2013, Paltrow and Williamson hosted a dinner in London to raise awareness for the charity, while in 2010 Stella McCartney hosted a Fashion’s Night Out event for the organization, showcasing creations by children that Kids Company supported. Folli Follie and Mulberry have both produced designs in collaboration with the organization.
Batmanghelidjh founded Kids Company in 1996, with the aim of supporting children, young people and families in need. Batmanghelidjh, who cuts a striking figure, with

News in Brief: Area Man’s Favorite Things All Types Of Meat

MT. HOREB, WI—Enumerating what he admitted was quite a wide array of interests, local man Thomas Hoyer revealed to reporters Thursday that his favorite things are all types of meat. “I really think people should try to live life to the fullest and focus on what they love most—for me, that’s a nice marbled steak, buffalo wings, pulled pork, and breakfast sausage,” said Hoyer, who bypassed such common categories of interests as spending time with loved ones, traveling, and viewing various forms entertainment in favor of pastimes that included spiral-sliced ham and several types of ribs. “And nothing beats a good burger, or a beer-simmered bratwurst, or a perfect medium-rare sirloin, or sirloin tips. And gyros, thick-cut bacon, and salami—oh, and lamb. Lobster tails, too.” At press time, Hoyer added, “Jamaican jerk chicken.”

Fashion’s Favorite Yoga Instructor Opens a New Chinatown Studio

Photographed by Steven Klein, Vogue, October 2002

Models, actresses, and many a Vogue editor swear by the yoga classes Krissy Jones has been teaching out of a private studio in SoHo. Jones, who trained as a dancer, specializes in a blend of Katonah yoga—itself a hybrid of traditional hatha yoga, pranayama breathing techniques, and Taoist teachings—with active vinyasa sequences that result in “a bit richer of a practice,” she says.

Now Jones has partnered with her fellow teacher and Katonah trainee, Chloe Kernaghan, to open Sky Ting Yoga, an airy, light-filled new Chinatown studio offering a menu of classes as dynamic and challenging as their own. “All of the teachers are rock star teachers and have followings,” Jones says. “We kind of curated the schedule so that I’d [want to] go to anybody’s class.” Also on offer are workshops and exotic yoga retreats—upcoming trips include an August jaunt to Turkey and a December sailing tour of Thailand—which Jones promises will offer “a balance between yoga and vacation life.” The studio’s name reflects this unpretentious attitude: Though ting is Chinese for place, “we also like it because it sounds kind of Jamaican,” Jones explains. “We don’t really chant or ‘om’ or do much of that. We’re a little more accessible and teach to the present-day New Yorker who just needs to chill out and do some backbends from being on a computer all day.”

The 2,000-square-foot duplex space, which opens July 10, features a rotating selection of artwork (first up are photographs and paintings by Nick Poe, who designed the space, and Thomas McDonell), a plant-filled practice room complete with stuffed giraffe mascot, and a roof deck for meditation sessions and workshops. An on-site boutique will sell chic yoga gear from Nike and Live The Process, and natural beauty products from Ben Shen. And the nearby health-conscious hangout Dimes—whose fashionable fans are bound to be Sky Ting regulars—has signed on to provide to-go meals and snacks. “We’re hoping to give the community a place to hang out,” Jones says. “You’ll want to be here all day.”

My Favorite Husband – Pam McCutcheon

Pam McCutcheon - My Favorite Husband artwork

My Favorite Husband

Pam McCutcheon

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Publish Date: October 10, 2014

Publisher: Parker Hayden Media

Seller: Parker Hayden Media

After five years of being lost in the Amazon, archaeologist Chaz Vincent has finally come home to his wife, Kelly, only to learn that she has had him declared dead. When he attends his own funeral, Chaz finds out that Kelly married another man just that morning. Now she has to choose between them. Who will be her favorite husband?  Sequel: Caught in the Act “A breath of fresh humor in the land of romantic comedy! Laughter, sex, a hero to-die-for . . . what else could the romance reader want? My Favorite Husband is a laugh-out-loud hit!” —Sandra Hill, New York Times Bestselling Author ”Taking a page from movie classic My Favorite Wife, Pam McCutcheon dishes up a delightfully amusing and wacky comedy. Over the top fun and humor make this a screwball classic!”  — Jill M. Smith, Romantic Times (four stars!) “My Favorite Husband is by far one of the most pleasurable books I have read this year. From page one the action never stops. I could not put the book down. I stayed awake into the wee hours reading and laughing and turning pages and laughing some more. The secondary characters are integral to the story, and provide tons of comic relief, but the focus is on Kelly and Chaz and the decisions they must make. The romance is poignant and sexy, and Chaz is the ultimate romantic hero. Ms. McCutcheon expertly intertwines laughter and fun within different plot threads, and just when I thought she had them all together, she adds yet another twist to this wonderful story! My Favorite Husband is a fun and exciting escape from everyday life, and is well deserving of Romance Review Today’s Perfect 10 award.” — Diana Risso, Romance Reviews Today  “Five stars! This romantic comedy testifies that if something can go wrong it will go wrong! This is the best romantic comedy I’ve read this year. I read this book in a day. I couldn’t put it down. I carried it with me all around my house. Yeah, my husband thought I was totally bonkers, especially when I burst out in hysterical laughter.  My Favorite Husband is a must read.” — Melissa Alvarez, About.com  “Five Roses! This book was a riot from cover to cover, the laughs just kept coming. The scenes where Chaz and Spencer ‘compete’ for Kelly by having the best date are some of the funniest I have ever read. Think rappelling, spying, wining, dining, and of course a little lovin’. These two men are polar opposites, Chaz is Indiana Jones come to life and Spencer is a debonair man about town. How can one woman chose between two wonderful men like them? Well it is no easy choice, but to console all you happy ending fanatics, I will share one little secret—both men end up happy at this end of this book! I had a hard time putting this little gem down! If romantic comedy is what you like then take my advice and put Pam McCutcheon’s new novel, My Favorite Husband at the top of your shopping list!” — Jen, A Romance Review “Reminiscent of the old screwball romantic comedies, My Favorite Husband will make you laugh until your sides ache as Kelly tries to straighten out the complicated mess her life suddenly becomes. Author Pam McCutcheon has used her considerable talent for comedy to catch and hold the reader’s attention as Kelly moves from room to room in the classy hotel Spencer had chosen for their honeymoon. She doesn’t move alone, but unwillingly with an entourage of self-interested characters who are hilarious in their efforts to complicate further an already tabled situation. Fascinating reading with a lighthearted look at the funny side of life. This is a great read for anyone with a sense of the ridiculous. A real reading adventure.” — Anne Edwards, The Book Review Site “Using the theme from the classic Grant-Dunne movie My Favorite Wife, Pam McCutcheon spins an amusing romantic romp that captures all the lunacy of the 1930s screwball comedies." — Harriett Klausner

Favorite MerleFest and Rooster Walk musical discoveries

MerleFest and Rooster Walk Music and Art Festival have kicked off the 2015 summer music festival season to standing ovations. Fans have been posting all over social media they’re already looking forward to next year, biding their time for these iconic Americana and roots festivals — considered some of the best in the Southeast. There were amazing performances by MerleFest headliners, including The Avett Brothers, Lee Ann Womack, Dwight Yoakam — as well as Rooster Walk headliners Yonder Mountain String Band, Steep Canyon Rangers and Lake Street Dive. But other acts, too numerous to mention, did not disappoint. One of my favorite things about attending these festivals in particular are the new acts I “discover” by wandering among the stages. This year was no exception. Following are just a few personal discoveries I made over the two weekends. As a friend of mine says, “You come for the big names on the poster, but it’s the smaller names that keep you coming back.” Next up for me are Red Wing Roots Music Festival and FloydFest. How about you? What festivals are you headed to this summer?

MIPSO

This North Carolina-based band performed at both MerleFest and Rooster Walk and played one of my new favorite songs, “Calling Carolina,” which I can’t shake out of my head. It’s no surprise that one of the members of the Appalachian-influenced bluegrass string quartet, Joseph Terrell, was a winner in MerleFest’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest (see below) in 2014.

The HoneyDew Drops and The Honeycutters

I have learned that I like acts that include the word honey in their names. Both performed at MerleFest. I am looking forward to hearing The HoneyDew Drops, who also have a new album out, “Tangled Country, and they are scheduled to perform at Red Wings.

Logan Brill

I had the opportunity to sit down for a few minutes to chat with this young woman and I was struck by her maturity, sincerity and passion for what she is doing. She has been compared to Bonnie Raitt, among others, but she is creating how own brand of music. She released her second album, “Shuteye,” earlier this month. Missed her at MerleFest? She’s playing Muddy Creek Music Hall in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Aug. 12.

Scythian

You may be wondering why this now periennial MerleFest favorite made my “discovery” list. While it’s true the Raleigh-now-D.C.-based Celtic group isn’t new to the festival, they did release their newest album, “Tin Can” at MerleFest. I dare you to sit down the whole time during one of this group’s performances. Their energy is infectious. Check out their exhausting tour schedule here because they are most likely coming to a city near you and soon.

Jesse and Noah Bellamy

The sons and nephews of one of country’s most popular duos, The Bellamy Brothers, are making their own unique music these days, music that just has to be making the elder brothers proud.

Chatham County Line

If you haven’t had a chance to catch this group of guys, stop what you are doing right now and try to find them playing a gig near you and go see them. They’re so much fun. Better yet, buy tickets for Red Wing, where they are performing on Friday, July 10.

James Nash of The Waybacks

Again, you’re probably wondering why I would include Nash in a post about new discoveries at MerleFest, since The Waybacks have been playing the festival since 2007. I was fortunate enough to sit down with Nash after he came off the Walker Center Stage from the band’s Friday afternoon performance; his energy and enthusiasm were contagious. I had no idea the time and effort that goes into what has become the festival’s most popular non-Watson stage event, The Hillside Album Hour. Nash and the other San Franciso-based Waybacks with a little help from their friends — Joan Osborne (yes THAT Joan Osborne, Sam Bush, Jim Lauderdale and Jens Kruger — surprised the crowd this year with their version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” You say you missed it? Lucky for you it was recorded and you can purchase the Hillside Album Hour performance from this year at MerleFest 2016.

Chris Austin Songwriting Contest

Also not new, but new to me. While I know a number of MerleFest headliners got their start on this tiny stage in Alumni Hall — indeed Abigail Washburn mentioned on Friday that she was second runner up in the contest not so many years ago — I had never heard any of the emerging songwriters perform until this year. That’s because this year marked the first time I actually knew someone who was a finalist in the contest. Check out Carri Smithey and her band, Josh Coe (Saxapahaw, N.C.), Ryan Burgess (Burlington, N.C.) and Keith Ingalls (Burlington, N.C.) performing their third place song, “No More.”

Will Overman Band

Will Overman is a junior majoring in sociology at the University of Virginia who sesongs seem to be drawn from the experiences of someone much older. I heard him and his self-titled band perform at Rooster Walk. Their music falls somewhere in between bluegrass, country, rock, blues and pop that creates what most of us consider Americana folk rock. You can catch them at the Devil’s Backbone Brewery on July 18 and in Charlottesville’s The Jefferson Theater on July 25, where they are performing with The Hackensaw Boys (one of my festival finds of 2014 you may recall.)

Annabelle’s Curse

I also heard this band for the first time perform at Rooster Walk 7. This five-piece alternative folk band from Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia doesn’t seem to be cursed as much as blessed with talent. Catch this refreshing act at FloydFest in July.

Josh Shilling and Mountain Heart

Bassett, Virginia-native Josh Shilling served as Rooster Walk 7’s musical ambassador, or artist-at-large, sitting in on various sets with just as varied groups including Yarn and Left Hip Pocket over the four-day event. But the highlight of Shilling’s performances was the lead singer, piano player and guitarist’s Sunday afternoon set with Mountain Heart.

Stop Light Observations

I only caught their last song when this group performed at Rooster Walk 7, but they were my husband’s favorite. His take: “The played music ranging from the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme song to ‘Gimme Three Steps’ to ‘Psycho Killer.’ It was more like being at a party than with a bunch of old people in lawn chairs.”

Seth Stainback and Roosterfoot and Major and the Monbacks

And speaking of rockin’, both of these Virginia groups rocked Rooster Walk 7.

Virginia Beach native Stainback and Roosterfoot delivered a powerful blend of blues, country, folk, old gospel and rock. What started out as a father/son duo with Keith Stainback has turned into a soulful powerhouse after adding former Wet Willie guitarist Larry Berwald , fellow shipyard worker Steven Yewcic on bass and music promoter Jason Bruner on drums.

In another family affair, twin brothers Neal and Cole Friedman founded what became Major and the Monbacks during high school in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2008, teaming up with classmates Michael Adkins, Harry Slater, and Tyler West to form the core group that has driven the continued evolution and success of the band over the past seven years.

If you missed them, both groups can be seen performing at FloydFest in July.

Channeling French Girl Cool on Broadway: The Story of the Costumes for Tony Favorite An American in Paris

An American in Paris

There is a powerful moment in the first act of Christopher Wheeldon’s Tony-nominated reimagining of An American in Paris, when the full dance company converges on stage, postwar customers and shop girls of the city’s iconic Galeries Lafayette. Amid the swirl of perfume bottles and bolts of vendeuse toile, arranged somehow imperceptibly in a row at the proscenium edge, there bursts forth a tableau of models posed down to the gloved fingertip, almost exactly like the iconic John French photograph of Christian Dior’s 1947 New Look collection. That was Mr. Dior’s clarion call to women for a return to beauty and femininity in a beleaguered city aching to rediscover its glory—on Wheeldon’s stage, the sight makes for a message equally as important to the lovelorn characters of this new production, widely considered a top contender for this year’s Best Musical Award.

An American in Paris

An American in Paris carries with it a long, beloved history, of course, based on George Gershwin’s work of the same name, and made classic in the Vincente Minelli film version starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. To create his own vision of a liberated Paris, Wheeldon enlisted Broadway veteran Bob Crowley for the sets and costumes to tell the story of Lise, a young dancer played by Leanne Cope, and American GI painter Jerry Mulligan (Robert Fairchild).

Crowley’s efforts this season have garnered an impressive four Tony nominations: two for the set and costume design for An American in Paris, one for the sets in Skylight, and another for the Cheever-esque getups worn by Helen Mirren in The Audience.

An American in Paris

It is the idea of the Parisian woman, her confidence and ease in dressing, at that moment in her history that the costume designer so masterfully captures in his clothes, through the sculptured formality of the Dior silhouettes as well as Lise’s swingy skirts and dresses. “They just have it for free and it’s like it’s in the water they drink. I don’t know what it is,” says Crowley, when asked to speculate on just what “it” is about the enviable timeless cool of French style. “We have to work so hard at it, but they don’t.”

For him the true challenge was merging that elusive quality with the choreography of the show. “I can’t remember the last time there was this much ballet on Broadway and I think people are finding it really refreshing,” Crowley says.

An American in Paris

Expand

Photo: Courtesy of Broadway.com

To get the right movement in the garment, so necessary for the dancers, Crowley looked to the synthetic fabrics that were just coming out at the time. “There was a lot of rayon. You know, that manmade fabric was coming through from the thirties, and that moves brilliantly as opposed to wool or a serge or tweed or anything like that. So all the fabrics move really, really beautifully.” The way Crowley’s nimble designs flicker on Cope’s birdlike body is a careful study in lightness and freedom, much like the hopes of Paris at the time, which was rediscovering itself after the darkness of the occupation, set to Gershwin’s music, written a full decade before the war.

The collaboration of director and costumer proved a perfect match as well. Wheeldon, a dancer who also choreographed the show, was acutely aware of the way the costumes would function on a dancer’s body, the flourishes and punctuation it can add to the choreography. Says Crowley: “I would show him [Wheeldon] the shapes and I would say, is there enough fabric in this skirt? Can she do everything in this?” Which, of course, is the true test of Parisian style.
