8 Topcoats to Keep You Feeling Warm and Looking Sharp This Winter

While there are many of us that wish we could spend our working hours in sweats, sometimes it’s necessary to throw on a suit to make a good impression for that big meeting. And in the winter, it can be tough to stay warm in tailoring, even if you’ve got a suit made out of a heavier material. Enter the topcoat: it’s a great way to add some warmth to your cold-weather look by providing a heavier outer layer, while also protecting your suit coat from the elements. (It’s also a much cleaner look than covering up with a bulky down-filled parka.)

How We’ve Kept Our Son From Feeling Like He’s From A ‘Broken Home’

As part of our Blended Family Friday series, each week we spotlight a different stepfamily to learn how they’ve worked to bring their two families together. Our hope is that by telling their stories, we’ll bring you closer to blended family bliss in your own life! Want to share your family’s story? Email us at divorce@huffingtonpost.com.

A family may change after divorce but it doesn’t have to fall apart. Just ask Heather Belanger. The remarried mom of two prides herself on the close co-parenting relationship she shares with her ex-husband Tony.

“As far as my son is concerned, it’s normal to see mom and dad at each other’s homes and to see mom and dad there for all of those special moments in his life,” Heather told The Huffington Post recently.

Below, she shares more about her blended family.

Hi Heather. Please introduce us to your family.

At my house we have me, my husband Mike, our daughter Grace (1) and my son Alex (5). At Alex’s dad’s house, there’s his dad Tony, Tony’s girlfriend Jesse, plus their 3-year-old daughter Violet.

Tony and I have been divorced since February 2013, but separated since 2011.

Mike, Grace, Alex and Heather. (Photo courtesy of  Gabrielle Wyckoff)

How did you forge such a close relationship with Tony and Jesse? As a parent, why is that relationship important?

The most important thing in our eyes is for Alex to know that even though he comes from a “broken home,” the love and commitment his father and I had from the very beginning is still there, because we’re a family. Family is family and nothing is more important at the end of the day.

As for my relationship with Jesse, we didn’t set out to be friends, it just naturally evolved. It started between the births of Violet and Grace, after the emotions following the divorce had begun to fade. We both felt it was important for Alex to be close to both of his sisters. And the more we did things together for the sake of Alex, the closer we all became and the easier it was for us to realize that working together as a team benefited everyone. It’s also practical; with both my husband and my ex working a lot, it’s awesome to have the help or the extra set of hands.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as parents since the divorce?

This is a tough question! I’d like to say the relationship between our families has come to be through trial and error, but really, there hasn’t been much of that. We’ve just adapted as situations have changed and it’s worked out in our favor. Most of the challenges we have come across have come from outside our family, when people are confused or critical of our situation. People’s perception on how we do things is that it isn’t “normal” and anything not normal is chastised or questioned, which is frustrating.

What’s the best thing about being so close even after divorce?

As far as any of us are concerned, our kids are happy, healthy and in my opinion, more fulfilled getting to see two families come together and work together so well.

What’s your best advice for other divorced parents struggling to co-parent?

My advice would be to find the things that are preventing co-parenting from happening and figure out a way to resolve those issues. Is it hurt feelings? Jealousy? A grudge? Look at your behaviors and think about whether you’re comfortable with your kids following that example. None of that can be more important than getting in as many moments with your kids as possible, so try to compromise and make it happen.

How I Reconcile Feeling OK About Myself With Completely Loving Makeup

My makeup wearing habits aren’t actually so deep or complex. I love to wear it sometimes, but I feel absolutely fine without it, too. When I do wear makeup, it’s not in an attempt to “fix” or “cover” things, but more of embodying different characters, or experimenting with different “vibes.” One of the most reassuring things I’ve been told was by my very clever academic aunt, who said my relationship to “all that stuff” was “extremely healthy.” But I do worry that my love for all things cosmetic can’t be doing such great things for my brain. How can I be an interesting, clever and all around top girl if, secretly, my biggest interest is coloring in my lips?

What worries me about constantly writing and thinking about makeup is that a lot of women are using makeup not to feel amazing, but to feel acceptable. As soon as doing this bizarre, gross thing ceases to make you feel excited and powerful, and starts to be needed to make you feel normal, that’s where we have a problem. I can’t see an issue reconciling wearing makeup with being a feminist: I am, in fact, over that whole debate. I think everybody should be able to make herself look exactly how they want to — I believe that is a very positive thing, in fact. But I don’t like the waters to get muddied with negativity and insecurity. I don’t like anyone telling anyone that they have to do anything. In this case, it’s the women ruling a dictatorship over themselves, which is really depressing. You need to be on your own side, or who else is going to be?

The way I reconcile naked-me with made-up-me is wearing makeup in a way which doesn’t make me feel like a total p.o.s. when I remove it. That is a one way ticket to not being at peace with your bare naked face, which is going to make you feel distinctly un-amazing at least half of your life. Don’t feel things need to be “fixed” with makeup. Don’t try to change the fundamentals of your face in a way which will be psychologically damaging when they have to be cleansed off every day. By all means make your face look like how you want your face to look, but keep the language distinct in your head: this is not how your face “should” look. And if you’re doing it for any reason outside of pleasing yourself, then that’s a red flag.

I know I’m almost certainly over-intellectualizing it. For most people, makeup is probably an automatic, even meditative process that they just do and don’t even think about. That’s fine, and I bet the thoughts they have for the rest of the day are no less valuable because of the fact they’re coming out of a head which is covered in makeup. I just can’t help thinking about it. Why am I finding certain aesthetics appealing? Is it all me or is it society tricking me? I don’t want anything I say to make anyone else feel bad about themselves, even if what I’m saying is as fatuous as “wearing grey lipstick is cool.” The balance between being a makeup obsessive, a feminist, an anxious person, a confident person is hard to strike, but I think I’m getting pretty ok at it.

My cousin, aged 4, came downstairs to tell her mother she was very beautiful that day. Her mother asked who had told her so, and she replied, “The mirror.” Why this would be a ridiculous thing for a grown woman to say is stupid to me. If you’re doing things to change your face, you should certainly be allowed to admit that you like the way it is making your face look. You should be allowed to do exactly what you want to your face, but try to make sure what you want is truly coming from you. The mirror should be telling you you’re beautiful every day, with all of the obliviousness and naiveté of a 4-year-old.

News in Brief: Anti-MDMA Campaign Warns Teens About Dangers Of Feeling More Connected To Others

ROCKVILLE, MD—Explaining that most young people mistakenly believe the popular drug to be safe for recreational use, officials from the National Institute on Drug Abuse unveiled a new anti-MDMA campaign Friday warning teens about the dangers of feeling deep emotional connections to others. “Too many of our nation’s children don’t realize that even a single dose of MDMA—or Molly, as it’s known—has the devastating potential to make users feel like they’re part of one big human family, connected to all those around them by a single cosmic thread,” said NIDA spokesperson June Kessler, who noted that 13- to 18-year-olds were especially at risk of succumbing to a profound warmth and admiration toward their peers that knows no bounds. “Teens need to know this isn’t just a benign party drug; it comes with serious consequences, and it can and will cause users to …

Nicki Minaj And Beyoncé Have An Awesome Summer Party In ‘Feeling Myself’ Video

Tidal subscribers were in luck on Monday when Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé dropped the video for “Feeling Myself” exclusively on the streaming service. The song, which appears on Minaj’s “The Pinkprint,” first leaked online last December. And now the video for “Feeling Myself” has leaked.

In the video, Minaj and Queen Bey play with squirt guns in inflatable pools in pink fur coats, eat cheeseburgers in a bounce house, have a champagne pool party and share Now and Laters. It’s pretty much the summer party of your dreams. (And proof that bucket hats only look good on Beyoncé.)

Beyoncé previously released her video for her new song “Die With You” on the artist-owned streaming service last month. Feeling the ‘Rocky’ in Relationships

In 2008, a massive earthquake shook the Chinese province of Sichuan. Measuring 8.0, the quake killed more than 69,000, injured countless more, and left 4.8 million homeless. The Chinese government has spent billions on the region’s recovery, which even now is incomplete.

The immediate devastation in Sichuan was also followed by a dramatic spike in the divorce rate, a phenomenon that captured international attention — and sparked widespread speculation — at the time. Did the deadly earthquake actually cause the jump in marital breakups?

The spike might have been a coincidence, though that’s unlikely. It could also have been that severe emotional and financial stress took a toll on the relationships. That’s certainly plausible. But it might also have been something much more basic. It could be that the turbulence itself — the shaking and crumbling of the physical environment in Sichuan — triggered cognitive and emotional turbulence, undermining personal commitment in the process.

That is the provocative idea that University of Pittsburgh psychological scientist Amanda Forest, with colleagues at the University of Waterloo, has been exploring in a series of studies. Though it sounds a bit wild, the hypothesis has a solid grounding in theory, specifically one called “embodied cognition.” This is the idea that abstract concepts are scaffolded on top of actual physical sensations, beginning with early caregiving experiences. Just as experiencing actual warmth activates feelings of personal warmth, perhaps actual shaking and crumbling can trigger thoughts of personal instability. Indeed, this cognitive link may be the basis of the metaphor “rocky relationships.”

The scientists tested this idea in three experiments, all involving people in committed relationships. In all the studies, only some of the subjects experienced subtle forms of instability in the laboratory — standing on one leg, sitting on a wobbly chair or cushion. While experiencing this instability (or not, in the case of controls), the subjects answered questions about their relationships: How confident are you that your partner and you will be together in six months? In a year? Three years? For a lifetime? How satisfied are you in your romantic relationship? How committed are you? And so forth. Some of the studies required the subjects to write notes to their partners, which were then analyzed by independent raters for signs of affection.

When they crunched the data, all the studies supported the notion of embodied shakiness. As reported in a forthcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science, actual physical instability led people to perceive their relationships as less likely to last. But more important, these perceptions were associated with less satisfaction and less relationship commitment. It’s known that people who experience less satisfaction and commitment are more likely to break up down the road.

Even in the most established relationships — defined in these studies as one and a half years together — people’s perceptions of relationship stability were remarkably malleable, shifting in accord with very subtle physical experiences. What’s more, physical rockiness triggered responses associated with known relationship risks: People who reported romantic instability were more likely to be withdrawn and less affectionate. Since emotional expression is key to satisfying relationships, shifts are not inconsequential.

Why would physical instability trigger such damaging responses? It’s not entirely clear, but it could be the wobbliness makes people uncertain of their own commitment. Or it could be people become more insecure about their partner’s commitment and withdraw as a form of self-protection, distancing themselves to diminish the possible pain of rejection. Or both. Whatever the dynamic, it appears that powerful turbulence, as in Sichuan, can result in both a natural and social disaster.

Follow Wray Herbert’s reporting on psychological science on The Huffington Post and on Twitter at @wrayherbert.

6 Little-Known Beauty Tips For Looking And Feeling Your Best

New year, same resolutions. Right?

It seems as though our yearly goals haven’t changed very much from last year. But a new beauty book landed on our desks recently that has inspired us to move forward with a better game plan.

The editors of Woman’s Day have created an extensive guide for beautiful skin, hair, mind and body in “7 Years Younger Instant Makeovers”, the likes of which we haven’t seen before.

While this is the third title in the women’s magazine’s “7 Years Younger” series, this new book addresses common beauty concerns like lackluster locks and dull complexions from a holistic perspective. They’ve tapped big-name pros, including celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff, hairstylist Andre Walker and dermatologist Dr. Patricia Wexler, for quick fixes and long-term techniques that really pay off.

Throughout the 336-page manual, readers will find before-and-after makeovers that illustrate the transformative effects of a fresh haircut or brow filler, as well as chapters dedicated to resetting your sleep and fitness routines to lower stress. Because we all know how that impacts your skin.

Needless to say, we’ve refocused our New Year’s resolutions after digesting all the advice.

So if you’re in need of some encouragement to embrace incoming gray hair or try a new shade of lipstick, below are six little-known beauty tips excerpted from “7 Years Younger Instant Makeover” that will help you put your best face forward each day.

If you’re battling dry, brittle locks, check your shampoo.

Don’t use a clarifying shampoo more than once a week (or more than once or twice a month for textured hair types, which are naturally drier). Because these cleansers are formulated to remove product buildup, they strip hair’s natural oils, too.

Instead, try a shampoo for dry hair, which contains extra moisturizing agents, or an aging-related formula, which hydrates and adds shine to regular or color-treated hair without over-softening.

Give gray hair a boost with clear styling products.

Because gray hair lacks melanin, it can pick up pigments from the environment (smoke in the air or minerals in the water), products (chemical relaxers are a big culprit) or the oils on your scalp.

To keep color pure and prevent tarnishing, make sure styling products are white or clear, and use a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for gray hair once or twice a week.

Cover your entire face to minimize signs of aging.

“Apply all of your skincare products from the periphery of your face inward,” says New York City dermatologist Doris Day, MD, author of “Forget the Facelift.” (This includes SPF and anti-agers!) “Most women apply too much in the middle and not enough around the hairline and jawline — these are the areas where I see the most skin damage.”

Want glowy skin? Change your jewelry.

Choose medium-length drop earrings and necklaces with embellishments. They’ll attract light, which reflects off your skin, brightening your complexion.

Highlight wrinkles to help them “disappear.”

Dab a liquid highlighter that’s close to your skin tone on top of crow’s feet; blend outward. This will reflect light away from imperfections while giving the illusion of an even complexion.

Before you pick up that teeth whitening kit, switch your go-to lipstick color.

If you usually wear an orange-y coral, try a berry pink, which will give a similar radiance and freshness, without the yellow undertones.

If you usually wear a tomato red, try a plum or richer red with a purple tinge. It will create the same kind of contrast against your other facial features, but will bring out whiteness too.

If you usually wear a frosty pink, try a rose or mauve with a hint of blue tones. These colors are equally understated, but also add some brightness that boosts your smile.
