‘The Farewell’ shows off Awkwafina and finds truths in a lie

“The Farewell” will inevitably inspire references to “Crazy Rich Asians,” featuring a predominantly Asian cast, a wedding, lots of big mouth-watering meals and Awkwafina. The similarities, however, pretty much end there, in a small, melancholy movie that explores cultural differences and dealing with death in an utterly charming, understated manner.

Supreme Finds Temporary Home on Bowery During Remodeling

The center of gravity of New York’s streetwear scene moved four blocks east on Thursday as Supreme set up a temporary retail home at 190 Bowery Street for the launch of its latest collection.
While the brand’s home base on Lafayette Street has gone dark from time to time as the brand switched between seasons, the store is closed now for remodeling after nearly 25 years.
The brand’s fans got the message and queued up outside the Bowery Street door, which gives only a hint at an oversize version of the red-and-white Supreme logo through a row of windows. The store features a typically sparse interior, with hats, sneakers, shirts, skate decks and the rest lined up along the walls. Occupying the middle of the space is a baby blue, comic Sphinx-like sculpture flashing a peace sign.
Among the latest from the brand are a green and black Supreme/Castelli cycling jersey, a metallic jacquard crewneck, a reversible faux suede leopard coat and a drum set, co-branded with Pearl.
Supreme designs its stores internally and it remains to be seen just how the original space will be transformed. Word is the location will be closed for one to two seasons.

News in Brief: New Study Finds Box Still World’s Most Popular Container

PHILADELPHIA—Noting its ability to enclose, protect, and transport a wide variety of objects, a University of Pennsylvania study published Monday confirmed that the box remains the world’s most popular container. “We found that when something needs to be stored or moved—be it tools, jewelry, pizza, even ballots—people tend to put their trust in a box more often than, say, a bucket or satchel,” said the study’s lead author, Susan Kemmis, who highlighted the rectangular containers’ stackability and closable top as the key assets that set them apart from bags. “Whether the item or items to be stowed away are large, small, heavy, or light, there tends to be a box of appropriate dimensions and rigidity to adequately contain them. The same can’t be said of baskets, jugs, or barrels.” While later admitting that crates are the go-to container for shipping purposes, Kemmis emphasized that …

News in Brief: Study Finds Majority Of U.S. Currency Has Touched Financial Executive’s Nude Body

CAMBRIDGE, MA—Saying their findings pertained to every denomination of banknote, researchers at Harvard University released a study Friday confirming that the majority of paper currency in the United States has been in direct contact with at least one financial executive’s nude body at some point during its circulation. “Our data suggest that, for any given piece of U.S. legal tender, there is a 64 percent chance it has touched a portion of a Wall Street CEO or CFO’s naked flesh, likely when the executive gleefully rolled their nude body around in a large pile of money or dumped a bucket of bills over their head and let the currency cascade over their bare skin,” said professor of economics Robert Barro, noting that several dozen of the $ 10 bills his team randomly tested contained traces of DNA from every executive-level officer and board member at Goldman Sachs …

News: Study Finds Movie Attendance Declining As More Americans Act Out Films At Home

LOS ANGELES—Noting that ticket sales nationwide have fallen to a 20-year low, a study published Friday by the Motion Picture Association of America found that movie theater attendance continues to decline as more Americans choose to act out films at home.

According to the study, rising ticket prices across the country, combined with the greater convenience of staying in, have contributed to the popularity of performing full-length feature films in the comfort of individuals’ own living rooms.

“Whereas previous generations of moviegoers would look forward to new movie releases and head to their local theater on a Friday or Saturday night, today’s entertainment consumers are increasingly choosing to print out screenplays, cast friends and family in the various roles, and act out films without ever leaving their houses or apartments,” said MPAA analyst Tate Mitchell, citing the fact that in 2015, more than 80 million households acted out …

News in Brief: Study Finds Harshly Criticizing U.S. Education System Only Causing It To Fall Further Behind Peers

PALO ALTO, CA—Explaining that even the most well-meaning criticism can lead to adverse repercussions, a study released Thursday by researchers at Stanford University has found that berating the U.S. education system has only caused it to fall further behind its international peers. “We often feel compelled to point out flaws and shortcomings when we’re trying to help our nation achieve its goals, but our research shows that criticizing a struggling institution like the United States education system actually lowers its confidence and causes it to perform even more poorly,” said the study’s lead author, Julie Ostel, who noted that authorities’ tendency to harp on the country’s substandard math and science skills was correlated with steady declines in math and science test scores. “People might think they’re helping when they highlight the educational deficits of our school systems by comparing them to academic standouts like …

Ahead Of Pope’s U.S. Visit, Survey Finds Many Catholics Disagree With Church On LGBT Families

Just weeks ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to the United States for the World Meeting of Families, a major international Catholic festival that kicks off Sept. 21 in Philadelphia, a new survey shows that many Catholics are widely more accepting than church hierarchy of families led by parents who are gay, unmarried, single or divorced.

Nine in 10 Catholic Americans say that a family led by a mother and a father is an “ideal situation,” according to the Pew Research Center’s report, which was released Wednesday. At the same time, nearly half of Catholics say that children being raised by an unmarried couple is “acceptable and as good as any other arrangement,” while more than 4 in 10 Catholics say the same of gay and lesbian couples who raise kids.

Francis, who will address an estimated 1.5 million people during a World Meeting of Families Mass in Philadelphia, is expected to speak frequently about Catholic views of the importance of the family during Masses, speeches and high-level meetings that also will take him to Washington, D.C., and New York.

While the pope has made several friendly gestures toward LGBT people, including his famous “who am I to judge” remarks on gay priests, he has also spoken out against efforts to “redefine the very institution of marriage” and has warned of “ideological colonization that tries to destroy the family.” In October, Francis and high-level bishops will gather at the Vatican for the church’s synod on the family, which will likely address divorce and LGBT Catholics.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Religion Newswriters Association in Philadelphia, where Pew revealed the survey results, Pew Associate Director of Research Greg Smith said Saturday that he was “struck by the high level of dissent” from church teachings by self-identified Catholics, who are “very accepting of nontraditional families.”

“Catholic opinions look an awful lot like U.S. opinions as a whole” on issues such as sexuality and marriage, Smith said.

At the same time, he said, Catholics are “also quite loyal to the church despite any misgivings” about its positions on hot-button issues. Seven in 10 said they could never leave the church, “no matter what.” Close to 6 in 10 also said abortion is a sin. Greater than half said that devotion to Mary and receiving sacraments, such as communion, are “essential” to being Catholic.

There are “major differences between Catholics who attend Mass regularly and those who do not,” Smith said. Catholics who attend Mass at least once a week are much more likely to agree with church positions on sexuality, marriage and other controversial issues.

Pew’s report on the survey noted that although it was conducted before the Vatican’s June 18 release of the pope’s encyclical on human ecology and climate change — a topic he’s expected to highlight during speeches to Congress and the United Nations — “Pope Francis may have a difficult time persuading Catholics in the U.S. to adopt his philosophy about excess and his focus on the environment.”

Six in 10 Catholics told the organization that helping the poor is essential to being Catholic, yet just half gave the same response regarding combating climate change.

“Catholics are divided on the question of whether it is sinful to spend money on luxuries without also giving to the poor, but large majorities say it is not a sin to live in a house larger than needed or to use energy without concern for the impact on the environment,” the report said.

The survey, which asked questions of 5,122 adult Americans, including 1,016 Catholics, was conducted between May 5 and June 7 with a 3.5 percentage point margin of error among Catholics.

News in Brief: Poll Finds Americans’ Greatest Fear Is Waitress Forgetting About Them

ORANGE, CA—Surpassing their anxieties regarding public speaking, mass shootings, and natural disasters, Americans’ single greatest concern, according to the latest results of the Chapman Survey On American Fears released Friday, is that their waitress will forget about them. “More than 70 percent of the individuals we surveyed listed having their waitress set down some glasses of water, promise to come back and take their order when they’re ready, and then never return to their table as their number one fear in life,” said sociologist Christopher Bader, adding that the majority of the 1,500 poll respondents said they experience a deep and persistent worry that their server will continue attending to other patrons, but never make her way back to them, at least once per week. “For millions of Americans, the fear that they might find themselves stuck at a table or booth as their waitress disappears into …

EU finds no evidence of illegal activity in Apple’s music streaming deals: report

An Apple logo hangs above the entrance to the Apple store on 5th Avenue in the Manhattan borough of New York City(Reuters) – Antitrust authorities in Europe failed to find evidence that Apple Inc's deals with record labels and online music streaming services are blocking rivals' access to its music streaming platform, Re/code reported, citing sources. The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, started an investigation in April and had sent out questionnaires to several record labels seeking information about their dealings with Apple. The investigation did not turn up evidence of any illegal activity, but the European Union will continue to monitor the market, the report said, citing sources.

Chris Brown Finds Liquid Courage In “Liquor” | Wired Tracks 6.25.15

Chris Brown has lots of liquid courage in his system (not that he needs it) on a newly released cut, aptly titled “Liquor.”

While the song’s origin (or where it’ll land) is unclear, the same can’t be said about the crooner’s intentions. Brown chants “All I want to do is drink and f*ck,” long after he asks the woman he’s with what she put in his cup. Our guess is that it’s Hennessy.

Hear Brown let his inhibitions fly on “Liquor,” which appears along with material from Tuxedo (Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One), Joey Fatts, and more in Wired Tracks below.

LGBT Asylum Seekers Not Getting Enough Relief In U.S., Report Finds

WASHINGTON — While the United States awaits a major Supreme Court decision that could legalize gay marriage across the nation, there are more than 70 countries where being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is a crime.

LGBT rights activist Victor Mukasa said the violence and hate crimes against LGBT people in his home country of Uganda became so bad that he had to get out.

“At some point it became unbearable. It became unbearable and you’re just like, ‘I have to leave. I have to leave to save my life,'” Mukasa said Thursday at a panel hosted by the think tank Center for American Progress. “There are people who are here for safety. There are people there who need safety.”

The U.S. has been offering asylum to LGBT people who face persecution in their home countries since 1994. Mukasa was able to obtain asylum in 2013, and others have done the same, although the government does not collect data on LGBT asylum seekers. But LGBT people still face serious barriers to receiving asylum, according to a report released Thursday by the Center for American Progress.

“For LGBT people seeking a haven in this country, we are doing more to meet our charge than ever before, but much more work still remains,” said Winnie Stachelberg, an executive vice president at the think tank who participated in the panel discussion.

One difficulty is a requirement that asylum seekers apply within a year of arriving in the U.S. The Center for American Progress report calls for dropping the one-year deadline so that those who need protection aren’t denied it simply because they applied too late.

“A lot of people don’t even realize that they can get protection based on persecution because of their sexual orientation or identity,” Sharita Gruberg, senior policy analyst at the think tank, said during the panel discussion. “And feeling comfortable disclosing something to a government official you’ve been forced for survival reasons to hide your entire life, you have to do all that and do it in a year.”

The report also urges the government to limit the detention of immigrants, which it says hurts individuals’ chances of receiving asylum. Aaron Morris, legal director at the nonprofit group Immigration Equality, said detention is particularly problematic for transgender people.

“One of the biggest problems that we see and one of our highest policy priorities is to get the U.S. government to stop putting transgender women in men’s facilities,” Morris said at the panel. “They’re attempting to keep them safer, but it’s not a humane way to do so.”

The report recommends the government dedicate more resources to reducing the backlog in immigration courts, offer free legal counsel to asylum seekers and increase training on LGBT issues for immigration officers and judges.

Former Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who is openly gay, said during Thursday’s discussion that he thinks the nation’s asylum policy could be improved by allowing people to apply at U.S. embassies in their home countries.

“Asylum is given to people who are already here and then can apply not to be sent back by documenting the problems,” said Frank, who helped push to expand asylum to include LGBT people in 1994. “There should be a procedure whereby people could go to the embassy and apply for refugee status.”

Even after people are granted asylum in the U.S., Mukasa said, many LGBT individuals need assistance in finding food, jobs and housing.

News: Study Finds Dangers Even In Casual Bullfighting

BETHESDA, MD—Challenging conventional wisdom about the activity’s hazards, a groundbreaking new study by the National Institutes of Health published Thursday has determined there are significant dangers even in casual bullfighting.

The health agency’s latest findings indicate that bullfighting recreationally, often considered relatively harmless in comparison to frequent or habitual bullfighting, carries health risks far more severe and long lasting than had been previously understood.

“There’s a general perception out there that bullfighting in moderation is relatively safe, but our data paint a very different picture,” said lead author Susan Ellis, noting that the study, which assessed the health of more than 200 bullfighters, provided clear evidence that engaging in even just an occasional bullfight considerably raised the risk of adverse medical outcomes. “Whether you fight several bulls over the course of an evening or just one, the fact is, every single time you put that red …

News in Brief: Study Finds Humans’ Greatest Swing In Mood Occurs Between Leaving Office For Lunch, Returning Afterwards

WASHINGTON—Offering insight into the extreme fluctuations in humans’ emotional state, a study published Friday by the American Psychological Association finds that the most severe mood shifts tend to occur between the point in time at which individuals leave their workplace for lunch and the point at which they are compelled to return afterwards. “According to our research, there is no greater mood swing than that experienced by an employee who had exited his office in anticipation of sitting down to a pleasant Honey BBQ Chicken Salad, and who now must trudge back to his desk and resume working for four or more hours,” said lead researcher Amanda Gibbons, pointing to data comparing the peak concentration of serotonin in an employee’s brain when he steps foot in the direction of a nearby Buffalo Wild Wings or sub shop and the drastically reduced levels of these neurotransmitters recorded when he …

News in Brief: Report Finds Drug Tunnels Most Intact Transport Infrastructure In U.S.

ARLINGTON, VA—Touting the extensive safety precautions, routine maintenance, and limited congestion, a report published Friday by the American Transportation Research Institute revealed that drug tunnels are now the most intact and reliable form of transport infrastructure in the United States. “The nation’s drug-smuggling tunnels have benefited from large-scale investments in new technology, high-quality materials, and regular repairs, leaving them in far better condition than U.S. railways, ports, bridges, and interstates,” the report read in part, which praised the state-of-the-art rail systems in many tunnels for efficiently ferrying narcotics with few, if any, malfunctions. “With advanced ventilation systems to keep fresh air circulating and well-lit passages to prevent accidents, these tunnels are a modern engineering feat, the likes of which are virtually unseen elsewhere in the U.S. transit network.” The report concluded by noting that, with scores of new construction projects underway, U.S. drug tunnels are …

News in Brief: New Report Finds Humanity 10 Years Away From Something Called Ash Age

TUCSON, AZ—Explaining that the large-scale shift in geologic conditions and social organization would require a new taxonomic classification, researchers at the University of Arizona released a report Tuesday revealing that humanity is approximately 10 years away from something that will be called the Ash Age. “According to our projections, within the next decade, conditions on Earth will become such that human civilization will enter a span of time best classified as the Ash Age, or potentially the Gray Epoch,” said the study’s co-author Kevin Reynolds, who told reporters that by 2025, Ash Age peoples will discontinue their city- and village-based societies and transition to the more common “roaming clan system” that will define life for the next era of human existence. “Our data indicate that the Ash Age will be further subdivided into three distinct periods, known as the Smoldering Ash Age, the Middle Ash Age, and the …

Boy Scout Finds Eagle Badge Somewhere Over the Rainbow

With Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” blasting, students, teachers, parents and community members tied thousands of fabric strips to the schoolyard fence. After 15-year-old David Fite tied the last piece into an expert bowline — arguably the strongest knot with the least stress to the lead line — the only thing standing between the boy and his lifelong dream of becoming an Eagle Scout was a rainbow.

When he overheard camp counselors discussing the Boy Scouts of America’s institutionalized homophobia two years ago, David returned home to Chicago despondent. “I was having a blast,” he recalls. “I couldn’t understand why any kid, gay or straight, wouldn’t want to be a part of it.” After a quick Internet search confirmed his worst suspicions, David told his mother that he needed to quit or follow the lead of a handful of Eagle candidates who were earning, then returning, their badges in protest. Since her son loved camping and his troop, and was so close to achieving one of the country’s highest honors, she proposed another idea: If he thought the policy was so immoral, why not convince the organization to change it?

After countless letters to national leadership went unanswered, David joined a broad-based grassroots movement of fellow Scouts using social media to encourage people to make their voices heard. After 6 months of aggressive lobbying, lo and behold, David beat Goliath: the 105-year-old institution begrudgingly reversed its national ban prohibiting openly gay youth Scouts. However, the organization stopped short of permitting “open or avowed” gay adult members or leaders, arguing that to do so “would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA.”

Watching a handful of local chapters mobilizing to defy the new ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, David sensed an opportunity to move the needle. A boy’s final step to earning his Eagle badge is to “plan, develop and serve as a leader to others in a service project helpful to his religious institution, school,or community.” And so was that last month, a council of Scout elders found itself navigating in uncharted territory.

The men listened thoughtfully as the teenager stood in front of his brightly decorated tri-fold presentation board, nervously explaining the backstory: In 2008, after an incident of gay bullying at my public elementary school, Nettelhorst, concerned parents organized a diversity committee to help foster a culture of tolerance and respect, not just for gay kids, or kids of gay parents, but for all kids. To drive the point home, the group co-opted our annual Fence Project, arranging the colored fabric strips into the pride rainbow sequence, and posting this little sign:

Each Nettelhorst student has tied a piece of fabric to the fence as a tangible sign of his or her personal intention to create a better world. As Nettelhorst, we’ve also made a collective intention: that each of us becomes kinder, gentler and more tolerant. Here, the rainbow colors of gay pride are a visible sign of our respect for the neighborhood of which we are a part, and the diversity of families that we serve. In June, Nettelhorst will be the first public school to walk in Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade. We believe family means everybody. Enjoy the summer: SPF 50, baby!

Many a passerby stopped, smiled, tweeted and posted; some even cried. The rag-tag public civics lesson had inspired a deeply personal, neighborhood catharsis.

But when the Chicago Tribune ran a front-page story cheering our efforts, Nettelhorst landed on every hate blog in the country. We even had the “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church up from Kansas protesting. Critics accused the school of corrupting innocent children, and using them as pawns in a decidedly liberal social agenda, all on the taxpayer’s dime no less.

Under death threat, 200 Nettelhorst families marched in the parade that year; in fact, we led it. The outpouring of support from the 140,000-strong crowd was overwhelming, as if we had taken away generations of hurt in one surreal-therapeutic-Kodachrome coronation.

“It takes real courage to stand tall against bigotry,” State Representative Sara Feigenholtz said. “While I’ve been fighting tirelessly for basic human rights legislation in Springfield for years, what’s incredible is that these children have shown us what it truly means to value equality, dignity and each other.”

Chicago’s first openly gay Alderman, Tom Tunney, who marched in the parade proudly wearing his Nettelhorst Pride t-shirt, professed that, “Time will show on this day, Nettelhorst was on the right side of history.”

Now, seven years later, the original parent organizers are finally seeing the change they imagined. “We started this movement to teach our children to stand up for each other and for our community,” explains Brad Rossi, the gay father of a Nettelhorst seventh grader. “If they’ve learned that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world, and believe themselves to be part of that group, public education will have served its most important function.”

As in years past, every Nettelhorst student tied a piece of fabric to the fence, and made an intention to make the world a better place. The tangible expression of those intentions lured in curious neighbors just long enough to read the laminated sign explaining the project, with one additional paragraph, unthinkable just four months earlier:

This year, David Fite of Boy Scout Troop 115 chose the Nettelhorst Pride install as his Eagle rank community project. The Eagle rank is the highest advancement a young boy can achieve in the scouts — and by leading and completing the Pride projects at Nettelhorst Elementary School, he not only shows that a boy scout must be prepared, but kind, respectful and understand that love is what we all have in common.

Next to the fence, at the corner of Aldine and Broadway, stands a forty-foot ash, one of the few trees to survive America’s devastating emerald ash borer infestation. David’s troop leader climbed a tall ladder to hang disco balls from the branches; fellow Scouts wrapped the trunk in colorful ribbon; Nettelhorst kindergarteners sprinkled the decaying wood chips that cover its roots with glitter. When the new “I DREAM” tree was all finished, David penned the first tag with a Sharpie: “I DREAM… of a day when ALL Americans are free to love and to be loved in return.” -David Fite, Eagle Scout Candidate, Troop 115.

But this week, we spotted Ms. Knowles-Carter out and about in jeans that look awfully similar to a pair we saw for $ 39 at H&M. Looks like Bey may also be the queen of bargain shopping.

Theater: Matthew Morrison Finds A Hit In “Finding Neverland;” Peter Sarsgaard’s Deadly “Hamlet”

FINDING NEVERLAND ** 1/2 out of ****
HAMLET no stars out of ****

FINDING NEVERLAND ** 1/2 out of ****
LUNT-FONTANNE THEATRE

I have high standards when it comes to Peter Pan for two reasons. First, the book by J.M. Barrie improves on his play and is a witty, heartbreaking masterpiece. You enjoy it as a child; you savor its bittersweet truths as an adult. If you haven’t read it (or not since you were ten) and do so now, you’re in for a treat. Second, one of my favorite theatrical experiences was the Mabou Mines adaptation called Peter and Wendy, which featured one actor interacting with puppets that captured the magic and wisdom of the book brilliantly. (At the same time, it made me appreciate the charm and unique appeal of puppetry like never before.) The Disney animated film? Thin stuff with cheap animation, mostly terrible songs and a dumbed-down approach to the story. The recent live TV event? Oy. So tread carefully when it comes to Peter Pan.

Despite a quietly charming performance by Johnny Depp, I wasn’t a big fan of the feature film Finding Neverland, which tells the story of how Barrie was creatively inspired by a widow and her sons while helping them deal with tragedy. It was too tear-jerking for my tastes. But just as Barrie’s book improved on his play, this musical improves on the film. It’s more cheerful, more imaginative and basically more fun. Of course, it marks Harvey Weinstein’s foray into the theater world. He’s backed brilliant, ground-breaking films, as well as turned a lot of middlebrow fare into big commercial hits. His success here is surely of the latter sort, but if it means he returns and backs more daring work in the future, all the better.

Do you know the story? It’s captured succinctly in the musical’s tagline: How Peter Became Pan. (There alone Weinstein has raised the marketing bar on Broadway. Not since Cats came up with “Now And Forever” has a show’s one-line marketing slogan been so effective; I’ll bet every show down the road works hard to come up with their own distinctive tag.)

Barrie (Matthew Morrison of Glee) is an unhappily married man. His wife is pretty but seems utterly uninterested in her husband or his work; as long as they’re in high societyand he doesn’t embarrass her with his eccentric ways, she will be placated, but nothing more. His American producer Charles Frohman (Kelsey Grammer) just wants Barrie to keep churning out more shows like the ones he’s done before. But Barrie knows he’s in a rut. His new comedy is a rehash of material he’s done better in the past. So Barrie retreats to Kensington Gardens and is struck…not by imagination, but by the fierce play of a troupe of wild boys, who have momentarily lost their mother and are having fun as pirates. They’re alive, silly, engaged, and happy — everything the dour Scotsman Barrie is not at the moment. Almost reluctantly, he’s drawn into their adventures, but before you know it Barrie is “argh-ing” with the best of them.

Their mother is the charming Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Laura Michelle Kelly, an Olivier winner for Mary Poppins). She apologizes for her rambunctious lads. But there’s a sad charm about her and even more sadness surrounding the one boy who doesn’t join in the fun. That’s her son Peter (Aidan Gemme). This Peter doesn’t refuse to grow up; since the death of their father, he’s growing up too fast, sinking into depression and stubbornly incapable of playing or smiling or having fun. What’s the point?

Barrie sees himself in the boy, naturally. He returns to the park again and again, hoping and then expecting and then planning to meet and enjoy the company of this broken but spirited family. His wife is confused. Her mother Mrs. Du Maurier (Carolee Carmello) is worried about propriety and the strain on Sylvia’s health, who is rather frail. Society begins to wag its tongue over such an unconventional friendship. But Barrie is having fun, the boys and especially Peter are clearly benefitting from his presence and the germ of an idea is forming for a work unlike anything he’s done before. It will have pirates and fairies and NeverNever Land and maybe a boy who won’t grow up….

Director Diane Paulus directs this amiable tale briskly and with precision. Still there’s no denying that the songs by Gary Barlow & Eliot Kenndy flit from your memory almost before they’re over. A few numbers stick, such as the act one closer “Stronger” and the act two highlight “Play,” which shows the actors working on Barrie’s new show letting out their inner child via nursery rhymes and nonsensical behavior. But they’re memorable more for the staging of those numbers and the energetic choreography of Mia Michaels rather than the songs themselves. “Stronger” ends with a pirate ship materializing before our eyes and “Play” is silly fun in a pub and they work — despite an inordinate number of lyrics with lazy “off rhymes” that trip you up while listening. “Stronger” does have an excellent melody, it must be said. The cast delivers them with gusto and Kelly almost makes her solo spotlight “All That Matters” feel grand. But again, it’s the performance not the song that registers.

And for all the drama, this is a fairly conflict-free story, courtesy of the book by James Graham. Yes, Barrie’s marriage to Mary (Teal Wicks) ends, but since it seems an unsuccessful one when the show begins, that’s neither here nor there. He’s had a flop and needs a hit but, while his producer and the actors grumble, they are ready to see what Barrie comes up with next. The looming possibility of a love affair with a widow is barely addressed; their romance is of the chaste variety (despite one kiss) and you don’t need to see the movie to know it’s not a good sign when Sylvia is repeatedly tired and seeing doctors.

So it’s a credit to the appealing cast and creative team that the evening moves along with amiable verve. All the tech elements are solid, starting with the scenic design by Scott Pask and the costumes by Suttirat Anne Larlarb. Sometimes sets and costumes shouldn’t call attention to themselves and that’s the case here, where stately homes, London streets, pubs and backstage at a theater are all evoked effectively and without fuss. (The exception is that act one closer with the ship, which pulls out the stops and helps the show reach a visual peak lacking in the story.)

Kelly is effortless as the kind-hearted Sylvia; her charm and sweetness anchors the show and makes the friendship between a widow and a married man one we never question. But like the show itself, there’s no friction: they are friends and don’t really seem to long for more. It’s telling that the most engaging scenes are the ones with Sylvia and her mother or Barrie and his manager. Carmello keeps the starchiness in Du Maurier understandably, ably aided by Graham’s canny first scene between mother and daughter that establishes their love and the mother’s sense of humor. And Grammer is having great fun in dual roles as the manager and Captain Hook, here seen as Barrie’s id and urging him on to kiss the girl already.

Morrison has always had a certain emotional reserve for me. It worked well as the straight arrow hero in the revival of South Pacific, as a seemingly clueless but kind Italian in The Light In The Piazza and it works well here for the tamped down Barrie, with Morrison indicating the Scottish origin of our hero with a modest but effective burr. After many years of performing on Broadway or celebrating the theater on TV, he’s finally got the lead role ni a hit new musical. The ensemble as a whole delivers their secondary comic bits with broad appeal. (This is a family friendly show, if a dead parent isn’t too problematic for the very young.)

The four boys as a group are appealing; their big number “We’re All Made Of Stars” is another winner, though again I hasten to add it’s because of the staging by Paulus and their performances, not the forgettable song itself. However, Gemme is a modestly weak link as Peter. We get so spoiled by excellent child acting in shows like Matilda and Billy Elliott that it’s easy to forget how hard these roles can be. Gemme is fine in the straightforward scenes of a depressed lad who thinks “playing” is silly now that his dad has died. But he has two big dramatic scenes and falls notably short on both of them. In the first he’s gesticulating wildly to indicate passion; in the second towards the end he was desperately reaching for a breakdown, repeatedly squinting his eyes shut apparently in an attempt to gin up a tear or two. Paulus molded the cast well, but here failed her young charge. He should dial back the histrionics dramatically; the audience is so primed to feel empathy for Peter that Gemme’s work is mostly done for him already.

So with weak songs and a mild book, why is Finding Neverland clicking with audiences? (It’s been a significant draw from day one.) I think perhaps the very lack of high drama is a plus. It’s a happy show with a sad heart and that’s actually an appealing combination. Peter Pan can easily be performed as schmaltz or just a tale for kiddies. But there’s a dark center to it that is the reason for the story’s enduring appeal.

When we catch glimpses of the show Barrie has created, of course we get the moment where Tinkerbell is fading and Peter urges the audience to clap if they believe in fairies and want Tink to live. This time, it takes place in the Llewlyn Davies home, with a clearly ailing Sylvia propped up in bed since she was too weak to attend the premiere. The entire cast has come to give a command performance and so it’s this frail woman who joins in on the clapping for Tinkerbell. The audience I saw it with clapped immediately without any need of prompting; they were ready, of course. I was struck for a moment by how often that scene has been repeated in theaters around the world since the play debuted in 1904. It’s touching, really:millions and millions of people have clapped because they believe in fairies, clapped to celebrate make believe. But really they’re clapping to stave off death. If only it were that simple.

HAMLET no stars out of ****
CLASSIC STAGE COMPANY

Who were the first people to climb Mt. Everest? Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, of course. But did you know they succeeded because of earlier attempts that broke paths and left caches of oxygen? Who were the next group of people to conquer it? Only mountaineering fanatics can answer that. So if you want to be remembered for conquering a mountain, you better be first or you better do something memorable, like being the first woman or so on. Most mountains aren’t even conquered on the first attempt by the ones who succeed; they have to make a climb just to get an idea of what they’re up against. One other, awful way to fame is to fail spectacularly, like the 1996 expedition that resulted in the deaths of eight climbers and was immortalized in Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet is of course a mighty peak to conquer for actors. Perhaps only Lear offers a similarly forbidding challenge. Your first Hamlet needn’t be your defining one and surely many middle-aged or elderly actors believe that only after being too old to actually play the role did they really feel ready to do the part justice.

Peter Sarsgaard is a very good actor with the requisite intelligence needed for the part. His Hamlet and this entire production directed by Austin Pendleton does not conquer the play. Far from it. Indeed, it is memorable for all the wrong reasons, a cascading disaster with almost every actor stumbling or forgetting their lines at one point or another on the performance I attended. By the end of the night, actors were dropping props, kicking swords towards the “bodies” of dead characters (making us fear for their safety) and looking relieved it was all over at the curtain call. Classic Stage Company is the home of some of my happiest theater memories in recent years. This one will endure too, unfortunately. One wonders if perhaps it would have been kindest when realizing they weren’t even off book as opening night approached to step in and pull the plug on the entire affair.

The one saving element is the look of the show. They’ve gone for a modern dress, Festen sort of vibe here, setting the entire piece at a wedding reception. This doesn’t really inform their take on the play, which is thoroughly traditional. This is not a high concept spin on Hamlet that goes for some crazy vision and falls flat, more’s the pity. It simply doesn’t work from start to finish.

But it looks good: scenic designer Walt Spangler has a handsome white floor with elegant metal trimming along the edge. Two bars are located at the back towards each exit and actors sometimes linger there before heading off or wait there and have a shot before coming on. (Who can blame them?) It’s a conceit with no thought behind it; if there’s some dramatic sense to when and how people linger and leave, I missed it. That floor lights up beautifully during the performance of the play within the play, another effective touch. And the costumes of Constance Hoffman set the tone right (though, oddly, I disliked the shoes of Hamlet and his mother and found them distracting). The lighting was…fuzzy at the start; somehow Justin Townsend managed to make the set seem out of focus before the show began. It was a nicely subtle way to keep you a little uncertain though it also proved symbolic of the show. The original music and sound design of Ryan Rumery of Scapesound was fine, though some of the background noises felt vague and indeterminate, undoubtedly reflecting the lack of sense in the entire work.

But that’s about it for kind thoughts. The cast is filled with solid actors who have all done better work before and will again and thank goodness for that. On the positive side, the always dependable Stephen Spinella was the best of a poor lot as Polonius, though I couldn’t grasp his take on this character from scene to scene. (In the famous “neither a borrower nor a lender be” speech he’s intelligent and sincere; later he’s buffoonish and then savvy again.) But he was clear and present and the language made sense when he spoke it (something almost no one else managed). And when he forgot his lines, no one handled it with more aplomb. Scott Parkinson scored capably in several roles (especially the Player Queen) and Jim Broaddus, also fine in several parts, handled the Player King with precision.

Glenn Fitzgerald was a welcome presence on stage (I haven’t seen him in ages) as Laertes, though when the character returned late in the play he’d been affected by the disease of confusion that had spread through the show. The talented Penelope Allen was elocuting with determined high drama as if she’d wandered in from an RSC production, while everyone else was speaking more colloquially. The usually excellent Harris Yulin was mumbling the role of Claudius. As a couple, they seemed so innocuous and frail even after we discover he really did kill Hamlet’s father that you wonder why the Prince doesn’t just put them in a home.

In numerous roles including Guildenstern, Daniel Morgan Shelley invariably looked annoyed at whomever he was sharing the scene with. He looked annoyed at Hamlet, annoyed at Rosencrantz, annoyed at Claudius and annoyed at everyone else. Perhaps he was just annoyed at being trapped in this production. Lisa Joyce as Ophelia was her own unique disaster; I’ve always found Ophelia’s mad scenes abrupt and very tricky to pull off and this wasn’t the production to make that work.

Hamlet is in a hell and surely the talented Peter Sarsgaard is feeling that way as well. The Dane famously dithers and that can cover a lot of hesitation. But Sarsgaard spent the entire night struggling for his lines; when he remembered them he pounced and poured them out in a rush, so glad that they were available to him. He didn’t actually call out “line” but one was constantly under the strain of expecting him to do so. Under such circumstances, at best the actor survives; he certainly doesn’t put his stamp on the role.

Not being off book is a theatrical sin; what can excuse it? But if blame must be placed, it will be shared by all the actors yet fall most squarely on Sarsgaard and the director Austin Pendleton. Pendleton has enjoyed great success as an actor and director. Not here. The show is filled with curious directorial touches, like the way actors wander on and off the set, lingering at those bars. (I wanted to join them.) Again and again he has actors sit and observe the action, rarely to any purpose or effect. It works when the Player King lingers, but mostly you are distracted during monologues by the unnecessary and unrevealing presence of a character. Early on, Joyce as Ophelia must sit in the back and look concerned and worried in eighteen different ways, pursing her brow, clutching her hands and so on.

But why is she present during “To be or not to be..?” Why does she lie down and feign sleep when Hamlet utters the lines “to sleep, perchance to dream?” Why does the gravedigger hang out and clutch the skull of poor Yorick during the final bloody scene? And why the choice after Polonius is mortally stabbed to have him walk across the stage and exit at a slow and stately pace? Worse, why does he pop back in during the massacre at the end? The dead Polonius doesn’t look censorious or angry or sad or even pay much attention to the numerous deaths taking place. He just walks across the stage, as if on an errand.

Even the last moment is botched, with poor Sarsgaard caught awkwardly between slumping to the floor and sitting back on his seat after being poisoned to death. He’s neither here nor there physically and it must have been fiendishly uncomfortable speaking his lines while a poor edit of the show’s ending stumbled to its conclusion. He abruptly sat up, letting us know the show was blessedly over. I wouldn’t bet money on who was happier, the audience or the cast.

This week, we rounded up a slew of outfits that work for different types of weather. Lucy Hale modeled a $ 50 body-con dress that will be perfect come spring and Rachel McAdams kept it professional in a long-sleeve blouse, great for chilly March mornings.

Fictional TV Presidents Are More Popular Than President Barack Obama, Poll Finds

WASHINGTON, March 23 (Reuters) – Whether it’s the earnest Josiah Bartlet from “The West Wing” or the manipulative Frank Underwood in “House of Cards,” Americans prefer television presidents to their real-life POTUS, President Barack “No Drama” Obama.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll taken this month found 54 percent of Americans held an unfavorable opinion of Obama, known for his cool and cautious presidential style, while 46 percent were favorable.

In contrast, asked to imagine that David Palmer of “24” was president, 89 percent of those who had seen the real-time Fox counterterrorism drama said they held a favorable rating of the decisive president played by Dennis Haysbert.

Martin Sheen’s Jed Bartlet of “The West Wing” – beloved by Democrats, including many who work in Obama’s White House – was rated favorably by 82 percent of its NBC viewers.

In the dark universe of “Battlestar Galactica” on SyFy, president Laura Roslin, played by Mary McDonnell, drew a 78 percent favorable rating among fans of her quest to find earth and escape the Cylons, a race of humanoid killer robots.

With Americans sharply divided along partisan lines, it is unlikely that any real-life president could achieve sky-high favorability ratings, said Tevi Troy, a presidential historian and author of “What Jefferson Read, Ike Watched, and Obama Tweeted,” a study of popular culture in the White House.

“Pretty much half the country is going to be predisposed against you just because that’s the way we line up with Republicans and Democrats,” Troy said.

Unlike fictional presidents, with their camera-ready looks and perfect timing, real-life presidents sometimes fumble.

Republican Ronald Reagan, who was an actor before turning to politics and eventually becoming president, was an exception, Troy said.

“His media people would say how great it was that he always hit his marks,” said Troy, who was a top domestic policy adviser in Republican George W. Bush’s administration.

Morally challenged fictional presidents also topped Obama’s favorability ratings in the Reuters-Ipsos poll.

Of those who watch ABC’s steamy drama “Scandal,” 60 percent had a favorable view of Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant, the philandering, scotch-swilling president played by Tony Goldwyn.

Frank Underwood also beat Obama.

In “House of Cards,” Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, kills a passed-out congressman by leaving him in a running car in a garage, and pushes a journalist into the path of a subway train.

Imagining Spacey’s scheming character as president, 57 percent of respondents who have seen the Netflix political thriller said they held a favorable opinion of him.

Even Obama likes Underwood. “This guy’s getting a lot of stuff done,” Obama quipped during a December 2013 White House photo-op with Reed Hastings, Netflix’s chief executive.

“I wish things were that ruthlessly efficient,” Obama said.

There was one result from the online poll, conducted from March 5 to 19, that could give some solace to Obama: He is more popular with Americans than Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Seventy-six percent of Americans had an unfavorable view of Putin, according to the poll, while 24 percent were favorable.

A Record Number Of Voters Support Gay Marriage, New Poll Finds

A record number of voters now support gay marriage, a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Monday found.

The poll shows that an all-time high 59 percent of American voters support same-sex marriage — nearly double the amount of voters who supported it in 2004. Support has also increased among conservative voters, with 35 percent now saying they back same-sex marriage, an increase of 9 percentage points from April 2013.

Fred Yang, a Democratic pollster who conducted the survey with Republican Bill McInturff, told the Wall Street Journal that support for gay marriage was increasing among voters faster than attitudes towards interracial marriage, now supported by 87 percent of Americans.

Despite the increase in support among conservatives, the poll found that it’s still unclear how a GOP candidate’s position on same-sex marriage would affect their chances with the electorate. Fifty percent of Republican primary voters said that they would view a candidate who supported gay marriage less favorably, while just 19 percent said that they would view the candidate more favorably.

Republicans seem to be taking a somewhat softer tone on gay marriage, and the party’s 2016 hopefuls recently have seemed reluctant to talk about the issue.

The poll comes as courts consider the legal fate of gay marriage. Last week, the Alabama Supreme Court ordered probate judges in the state to stop issuing same-sex marriage licenses even though a federal judge ruled the state’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court will consider next month whether state bans on same-sex marriage violate the Constitution.

The NBC-WSJ poll, conducted March 1-5, surveyed 1,000 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Why Teen Finds Her Mom’s Facebook Posts ‘Disgusting’ (VIDEO)

At some point, almost every teen gets embarrassed by her mother. But according to 18-year-old Abbie, her mom’s public display of inappropriate behavior is so “disgusting” that she can barely stand to be around her.

“My mom dresses like a 16-year-old. She loves to show skin,” the teen says, adding that her mom also posts questionable pictures to social networking sites. “She posted a picture of her on a stripper pole. My mom posted a picture of a bunch of drinks on a table and her caption was: I might not have my underwear, but I do have my martinis. It’s wrong, and it’s disgusting, and I don’t like it.”

Abbie says her issues go beyond her mother’s posts on social media. The teen says her mom wasn’t around to take care of her. “My mom did not know how to raise me. She was never home. She was out with her friends or with her husband,” Abbie says. “I never had any boundaries. She never cared what I did. I felt really alone.”

Abbie claims that her mom is self-centered. “She is a narcissist. My mom feeds off drama and chaos … If my mom doesn’t change, I’m going to have to cut her out of my life.”

In the video above, Dr. Phil asks Rachel about her behavior and Abbie’s feelings. And, on his show Wednesday he offers mother and daughter advice for putting an end to their animosity. Click here to see where you can watch.

Tourists stand in front of the Leopoldskron Palace where part of the film 'Sound of Music' was shot, in Salzburg, Austria on August 1, 2014For almost 50 years, "The Sound of Music" has captured the imagination of movie-goers and musical fans with its catchy tunes and lovable characters set against the stunning Austrian Alps. Emerson College’s Fusion of Bright Colorful Prints and Unique Vintage Finds

Emerson College is known for its creative students and innovative alumni. From motivated journalists to aspiring film directors and everything in between, Emerson stands out from the rest by encouraging us to think outside of the box and distinguish ourselves by pushing the boundaries. As Emerson’s motto states, “Bringing innovation to communication and the arts,” students are always on the hunt for the next big thing. You can feel an air of competition as soon as you walk into a class, which makes anyone even more excited to be the best one can be.

Earlier this year, the same happened to me. I transferred to Emerson on my sophomore year. While I was nervous and anxious to adapt to a new school, I knew I had made the right decision. The first few months I did not have many friends in class. However, I liked them all. You see, there is a thing about first impressions that really amazes me. Even though my classmates and I did not talk a lot during or after class, their style and confidence taught me more about themselves than anything that we could have talk before.

What seduced me about studying at Emerson was the ability of the students to be unique and follow their own path without breaking any rules. In fact, there are no rules to break. You make your own. I felt that being creative and innovative was not enough to stand out. You want to exude the passion and imagination to the outside so people notice that you have a special talent. Moreover, because I love fashion and I have a blog called Sanctuary of Freedom, students are Emerson College are a daily outfit inspiration for me. One of my favorite things about Emerson is the clash of colors and prints that happen on the halls. From polka-dots to psychedelic prints and vintage rock band logos, you can spot every print mash-up and color-block trend on campus.

I think Emerson’s motto applies both to the academics and the style of the students. Having personal style and a unique look makes you communicate an innovative message of constant change. Jorge Drexler, famous Uruguayan musician sings, “Nada se pierde, todo se transforma,” which means, “Nothing is lost, everything is transformed.” As for style, you do not lose it. It evolves with you. That is what I feel about the fashion consciousness of an Emerson student.

This Fashionista embodies the risk-taking environment one feels at Emerson. You can spot the mix of prints like stripes, plaid and a funky circular print from the pants. Even though Emerson students are competitive in the academic field, when it comes to fashion they are very easy-going. Converse over anything, rolled-up pants and a loose knotted T-shirt. It is effortlessly chic. She chose a color pattern with neutrals like black and white and a strong dark green. When I asked her what was her favorite piece, she told me it was the vest because it was vintage and she found it in a market in Paris. I smiled and agreed with her. I think many of Emerson’s students are vintage junkies, and I love it. Walking on the streets near Emerson, one can spot Fashionistas with oversized denim jackets, or a vest in this case and soft washed-out vintage T-shirts paired with an on-trend item. That is what an Emerson student is all about: innovation, transformation and evolution. For that reason, I’m proud to say that Emerson College is a fashion-forward society.

Andrea Fernandez is a junior at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts majoring in Journalism with a minor in Photography. She has been working with CollegeFashionista for three semesters and counting. As a result of the success of her fashion blog Sanctuary of Freedom, Andrea is part of Teen Vogue’s fashion click blogger and has had the chance to go to New York Fashion Week and Miami Fashion Week. Also, she contributes as a writer in the fashion section of Emerson’s fashion and lifestyle magazine, Em Mag. She hopes to move to New York once she graduates to pursue her dream of being an editor-in-chief at one of the biggest fashion magazines in the world.

Newspaper Reporter Finds Out He's Allergic To Newspapers

It doesn’t get much more ironic than this.

Baltimore Sun reporter Mike Dresser has just discovered what’s been causing his severe eye puffing, skin conditions and irritation in the newsroom for almost 40 years: he’s allergic to newspaper ink.

“The next time you see me in the newsroom, you may see me wearing the type of rubber gloves used by a doctor or a crime scene technician,” he wrote in an email to staffers. ” It’s just that I found out this week after nearly 38 years at The Sun that I am allergic to newspaper ink.”

In addition, Dresser has been advised not the wear dark colors, due to his allergy to blue textile dye. Dresser joked that he’s never been more grateful for the digitizing of media.

“Feel free to laugh,” he added. “The irony is not lost on me.”

At least he gave permission.
