The Paris Agreement Climate Change Goals Can’t Be Met Unless Fashion Does Better

OUT OF TIME: Despite all the noise — and the genuine changes being made — the fashion industry is losing its enthusiasm for tackling climate change, according to the latest report released by Global Fashion Agenda and Boston Consulting Group.
Industry progress has slowed by a third in the past year. The industry as a whole was awarded just four points in the GFA’s Pulse Score, a baseline score for measuring and tracking sustainability targets of the global fashion industry, compared with the six points awarded in 2018.
The report revealed that since the industry is a net contributor to climate change, the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, as stated in the Paris Agreement, will not be met unless improvements can be made.
“These latest findings emphasize the dire need for the whole industry to join the race and accelerate change now,” said Morten Lehmann, chief sustainability officer at Global Fashion Agenda, the organization that stages Copenhagen Fashion Summit, which is set for later this month.
The report also uncovered that 40 percent of the industry is not able to move into phase two of the Pulse Curve, a five-phase trajectory charting the industry’s social and environmental performance. Phase two

Fierce T-Ball Players Redefine Squad Goals With ‘Frozen’-Themed Team Photo

A group of fierce little T-ball players are taking the Internet by storm with their “Frozen”-themed team photo.

Oklahoma mom and photographer Betsy Gregory took the picture of her daughter’s team of 4 and 5-year-old girls dressed as Elsa and rocking some serious game faces.

Gregory told The Huffington Post that she and some other moms came up with the idea for a “Frozen” softball team as a way to get their Elsa-loving daughters excited about the sport. Though the team name was originally going to be the “Sparkling Elsas,” they ended up going with something a little more intimidating — the “Freeze.”

frozen

When it came time to take team pictures, the girls posed cheerfully in their traditional uniforms. But the real fun started when they put on their Elsa dresses and eye black and made “tough girl” faces.

Gregory posted the “Frozen”-themed team photo on Facebook — both on her own profile and other pages like Sports Illustrated Kids, where it received over 8,000 likes.

The photographer said she and the other team parents are “humbled and grateful” for the overwhelming response to the picture, which they see as “#GirlPower” in action. “What started as a little spark of imagination has turned into something much greater. What a great memory this will be for these girls many years down the road!”

They were especially blown away when Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter shared the team photo on her Twitter and Facebook page.

Gregory hopes her photo will show young girls that “it is really OK to try anything” and that they don’t have to choose between “being a princess and getting dirty.”

She also thinks the message is consistent with the Always “Like A Girl” campaign. “We want the girls to be proud of who they are and feel empowered to take on this crazy world we live in!”

As for the girls themselves, they “love” the photo, Gregory said. “My daughter is the little catcher in the middle and she has loved every second of playing,” she added.

“The picture was icing on the cake to our fun and adventurous season!”

Keep scrolling and visit Betsy Gregory’s website and Facebook page for more photos of this badass softball team.

Audacious Goals and Incremental Victories

As an American and as an Episcopalian, I was raised to pledge to and pray for two audacious goals: “liberty and justice for all” and “thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven,” respectively.

Yesterday’s historic step by the Presbyterian Church USA brought us a little closer to both.

The powerful witness of a mainline denomination ending marriage discrimination is not only in alignment with the core American value of equality but a manifestation of the Gospel value of God’s inclusive love. It not only adds to the groundswell of movement toward civil marriage equality in this nation but debunks the false narrative that we must choose between religious liberty and equal protection for LGBT Americans.

We have been on this journey for many years. What happened yesterday in the Presbyterian Church was the result of decades of tireless work and witness by those committed to bending the arc of the moral universe toward justice for LGBT people — not just in their church but in this country. And while the work is far from done, a wise mentor in the work of Gospel justice taught me years ago that our charge is to “set audacious goals and celebrate incremental victories.”

So today we celebrate the incremental victory of marriage equality in the Presbyterian Church. And then tomorrow we get back to work on the audacious goals of liberty and justice for all and a kingdom of God’s love, justice and compassion come on earth as it is in heaven.

We get back to work on being a nation where the equal protection guaranteed all Americans actually equally protects all Americans. We call on the Supreme Court to end the discrimination against some marriages as we commit to a protect-marriage movement that protects all marriages. We stand up against “religious discrimination” legislation that is nothing more than a smokescreen for homophobia.

And we look beyond the marriage wars toward ending employment discrimination, toward just immigration reform, toward passing the student nondiscrimination act, toward eradicating transphobia in all its manifestations — toward the long list of incremental victories we need to achieve before we can declare victory on those audacious goals I was raised to both pledge to and pray for.

But today we celebrate, because yesterday’s historic step by the Presbyterian Church USA brought us a little closer to both — and the sound you hear is the arc of the moral universe moving just a little closer to justice.

Systems Versus Goals again

Those of you who were nice enough to read my latest book (How to Fail…) will recognize my writing as the uncredited source material for this video. The credit information probably got separated from the product at some point.
In any event, the systems-versus-goals idea seems to be taking on a life of its own. I like that.

Ava DuVernay’s 2 Goals for Directing | Oprah Prime | OWN

When director Ava DuVernay decided to direct Selma, the story of the civil rights marches that changed America, she had two charges at hand: To humanize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and make a civil rights film that felt interesting. “History is beautiful when it’s taught in a vibrant way and you learn it and can take it in and you contextualize it for yourself,” she says. “But so often cinema treats history … kind of like medicine.” Watch as Ava opens up about her approach to the film.
