Miley Cyrus Models in Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 Runway Show

Miley Cyrus has made her New York Fashion Week fall 2020 debut.
The singer joined a host of other models for Marc Jacobs’ fall collection, which closed out New York Fashion Week. Cyrus modeled a black bra-like top with matching trousers and was holding a zebra-print coat.

This isn’t Cyrus and Jacobs’ first time working together. The singer teamed with Jacobs in 2013 for a charitable T-shirt which showed the slogan “Protect the Skin You’re In” inscribed on top of a nude Cyrus.  She later starred in the designer’s spring 2014 campaign photographed by David Sims. Last year, the duo teamed again to support Planned Parenthood, designing a pink hoodie that read “Don’t F—k With My Freedom.”
Cyrus also wore a look from Jacobs’ fall 2013 collection to the Met Gala that year, which celebrated its “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit.

Marc Jacobs RTW Fall 2020

Marc Jacobs and I go way back. We started in the industry at about the same time, and in WWD’s then-idiosyncratic breakdown of which market editors covered which designers, I “got” Marc. Certainly, I have admired his work throughout his career and the ups and downs of his company and brand. Some may say too much.
But after Wednesday night’s New York Fashion Week finale, that was all beside the point, for will someone please tell me who in New York is a better designer, more creative, more provocative, more capable of delivering a thrill? And how many lists of “greatest designers in the world,” both current and over the past 30 years, would he not make? Jeez, the guy’s good.
Jacobs is an extraordinary designer, his talent part pure fashion acumen and part showmanship. Over the years, he has staged some incredibly engaging shows, the kind now called “experiential.” This one might take the cake: a band of 54 dancers under the brilliant direction of choreographer Karole Armitage comingling with 88 models in an extravaganza so exquisitely audacious and compelling and masterful that it’s a shame it was one night only. This was a museum-worthy performance-art piece — one that would sell

Marc Jacobs to Sell Some of Personal Art Collection at Sotheby’s

IN WITH THE NEW: Oh to live like Marc Jacobs. Well now thanks to Sotheby’s, fans sort of can.
Some prized art that used to grace the walls of his West Village apartment will soon go under the gavel at various upcoming sales at Sotheby’s. Separately, an uber fan could spring for Jacobs’ four-story Bethune Street town house, which has an asking price of $ 14.5 million — down from the original asking price of $ 15.9 million.
Having recently purchased a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in Rye, N.Y. with his husband Char Defrancesco, the designer has reason to refresh his environs. Jacobs told his friend and Sotheby’s chairman Amy Cappellazzo in an online interview, “I’m not Marie Kondo. I didn’t decide everything must go. I thought about my role as an art collector…and I just felt it’s time to give myself this window to start again.”
More than 150 pieces will be sold next month, including works by Ed Ruscha, John Currin, Urs Fischer, Richard Prince and Andy Warhol. There will also be work from Francis Picabia, François-Xavier Lalanne, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, Eugène Printz, Jean Dunand, Paul Dupré-Lafon and Maurice Marinot, among others.

Marc Jacobs RTW Spring 2020

In his show notes and during a preview on Wednesday night, Marc Jacobs acknowledged the Sept. 11 anniversary. For anyone who worked in this industry 18 years ago in a show-related capacity, the two are inextricably linked. “Where were you when you heard the news?” The answer is at or en route to a show; working at a show; casting a show, doing something show. (I was traveling down Fifth Avenue to Bryant Park in a taxi and saw the Towers in flames in front of me.) Jacobs heard the news in a phone call from a reporter — myself. He’d slept in since the night before, he’d thrown a huge postshow party on Pier 54 with views of the Towers. In the moment, carefree reverie. In the aftermath — bacchanal before carnage — a stark reminder of how quickly life can change, and of how little control we have of our destinies.
Heavy material in the lead-up to a fashion show (or in a piece about a fashion show), but given the timing of Jacobs’ show and party 18 years ago, it would have been odd for him not to reminisce. He lost a friend in the attacks, David Rivers.

Bridget Foley’s Diary: Marc Jacobs on THE Retail Launch, THE Collaborations, THE Future

It has been teased since December, most recently on Tuesday night when Marc Jacobs posted three new photographs to Instagram. Today, the designer’s new collection, THE Marc Jacobs, makes its debut at retail.
The launch marks a major milestone for the Jacobs brand. The timing seems perfect, Jacobs having put together a string of strong runway collections, including fall’s masterful outing, along with an interlude that fascinated across generations, in the form of resort 2019’s look-for-look redux of the seminal grunge collection he designed for Perry Ellis for spring 1993. That collection got the wheels turning for THE Marc Jacobs, which, for those familiar with the history of the designer and his brand, registers as something of a redux itself. Not in line-for-line reissues (although there is an archival component), but in its positioning both within the greater market, and within the Marc Jacobs brand itself.
“I want either a beautifully made version of a very simple thing or I want something very out there. That’s it, that’s what I like,” Jacobs said during a phone chat on Tuesday afternoon, describing his consumer approach to fashion.
The dichotomy applies as well to his long-standing vision of his work. He and his, longtime business

Marc Jacobs RTW Fall 2019

“You have to come to New York to see a private couture show.”
That observation came from no less an aficionado of the haute genre than Sidney Toledano. Surely the couture notion crossed some other minds of those exiting the Marc Jacobs show on Wednesday night after what was a dazzling display of fashion.
Jacobs scaled everything back but the fashion impact. He showed 40 looks, fewer than his typical 60-plus, to an audience far smaller than usual. Yet he kept the show at the vast Park Avenue Armory, where he installed a reflective black glass floor and hired the American Contemporary Music Ensemble to perform live. He positioned the quartet off in a corner, far from the runway but well-lit and very much in view as the models proceeded out, each commanding the space solo and exiting fully before the next girl emerged. It all coalesced into a haunting dialogue between intimacy and distance.
The clothes were exquisite. “Each [look] will be an exaggeration of our view of who each of the women is,” Jacobs said during a preview. “For lack of a better word, it’s like a cabine of women we love.” Perhaps the most loved: Christy Turlington Burns, who last

Bridget Foley’s Diary: Marc Jacobs, Master Instructor

“Sometimes something will get on my nerves.”
If that sounds like an unusual observation within an instructional context, that’s exactly the point: The creative spark can come from countless sources, irritation included.
It’s one of the numerous points Marc Jacobs makes during his 18-lesson MasterClass fashion tutorial that launched last week. (The pique referred to here resulted in Jacobs’ spectacular Victorian surfer collection for spring 2014, a reaction to the truism that spring collections should be light and airy.) “I just said what I felt,” Jacobs said last week in a conversation about his approach to the class.
At MasterClass, Jacobs joins a high-gloss, high-profile faculty roster assembled from diverse, if mostly creative, disciplines, all-stars of their fields — among them are Annie Leibovitz, Ron Howard, Shonda Rhimes, James Patterson, Martin Scorsese, Thomas Keller, Alice Waters, Steve Martin, and even Stephen Curry on how to shoot like a dream. (Creative? The guy’s an artiste.) And, as of this week, Diane von Furstenberg, with a course on Fashion Branding. (In the ongoing cultural comeuppance category, classes by Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Spacey have been removed from the site.)
In its first week, Jacobs’ class has attracted a diverse student body, from young, aspiring designers to

The Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2016 Beauty Look: You Probably Can’t Wear It, but You Have to See It

Marc Jacobs RTW Spring 2016

So much to process – on many levels.

That Marc Jacobs is one of fashion’s great impresarios is a given. Almost as much as he loves pure fashion, he loves fashion’s entertainment value, over the years becoming increasingly inclined to stage not just a fashion show, but a show. Both here and in Paris, his productions have swung raucous and wistful, lyrical and brash, always with pure fashion – and a pure, powerful fashion message – at the core.

On Thursday night, Jacobs flexed his showman’s muscle exponentially. The location, the Ziegfeld Theatre, provided the ruse: Movie magic! Drinks! Popcorn in cardboard! T-shirts in cardboard! “One Night Only” read the theater’s marquee outside on 54th Street, while inside, hot-pink video posters teased the main event, and pretty, fishnetted Marc Jacobs’ staffers worked the aisles distributing those movie-house essentials, Junior Mints and Hot Tamales.

From a fashion standpoint, the show was a bonanza, packed with great clothes and dizzying fun. But fun on a mission. This is Jacobs’ first collection following the dissolution of the Marc by Marc brand – but not the abandonment of the Marc by Marc price structure. In that sense, the event provided a template for what the reconfigured Marc

Marc Jacobs Switches to Ziegfeld Theatre for Spring Show

MARC’S FOLLIES: Liza premiered “Cabaret” there. Woody Allen chose it to open “Manhattan.” And now the historic Ziegfeld Theatre on West 54th Street will host Marc Jacobs’ spring show.
The designer has chosen the movie house — the last single-screen theater in Manhattan and the site of dozens of premieres and screenings from 1969 to the present — to show his spring collection. It will be the first time since 2004 Jacobs has shown outside of either the Park or the Lexington Avenue armories.
Though a spokesman for the brand was tight-lipped on details — “He’s incredibly protective about elements of the show,” the spokesman said, referring to Jacobs — this one looks to be something of a production. One clue might be in the hashtag for social media: #marcjacobspremiere.
In fact, to allow guests time to absorb all the elements of the setup, doors will open earlier than usual, at 5:15 p.m. and the show will begin at 6 p.m. on the dot.

Marc Jacobs to Party for Chris von Wangenheim Book

PHOTO REALISM: In the annals of great photographers of the Seventies, the late German Chris von Wangenheim is often left out. He died too young, in a car accident at 39, to be remembered alongside peers like Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. In a new book from Rizzoli, “Gloss,” brothers Mauricio and Roger Padilha attempt to bring von Wangenheim into the mainstream, much like they did for late insider-y figures like designer Stephen Sprouse and illustrator Antonio Lopez, the subjects of their previous coffee-table books. An encyclopedic student of the era, Marc Jacobs is greeting the publication by throwing a party on the first Thursday of New York Fashion Week and selling a limited edition T-shirt, with proceeds going to the Ali Forney Center for homeless lesbian and gay youth. A note of caution about the dress code, though: Think Studio 54 glamour. “No flat shoes. No matte surfaces. No natural looks,” the invitation reads.

The Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week: Marc Jacobs, Tom Brady, and More

Photo: Courtesy of Gisele Bundchen / @gisele

Summer is the time for fun in the sun, for floral prints, and for taking your bucket hat and your wee babe out to relax on the sixth hole of some very scenic course, as Gisele and Tom Brady did. And really, hats off to this week’s most stylish Instagrammers, whether they were hatted in black leather à la Brooke Candy (necessarily subtle when paired with that bedazzled bike); piled on, as on YoYo Cao; or just the thing to top off some LemLem, as Liya Kebede did in an idyllic, sand-strewn locale. Those who stayed in the city—be it Rome, Paris, or New York—found other ways to keep cool in off-the-shoulder tops, cropped blouses, flowing floral prints, and the occasional artfully flounced sleeve, as was the case with Marc Jacobss crimson Gucci blouse. Designers supporting each other—what could be more fashionable than that?

These light black carpet munchers are certainly in the mood to show off all of their intimate secrets. First we have Cassidy Clay with soft mocha skin. She shakes her rump around and points it right at the camera. Then Chyanne Jacobs follows suit, shaking her phat anus around.
