Scent-Sational: Last-Minute Fragrances for the Holiday Season

So you left your holiday shopping to the last minute this year, and now you’re in a panic for that perfect something. How do you find the gift that leaves a lasting impression? Just follow your nose. We’re talking fragrances.

The 2019 Men’s Journal Holiday Gift Guide: 23 Gifts Our Editors Love

The fragrance industry is built around creating emotive products, and the sense of smell is closely linked with memory. This means with the right fragrance you can create an impactful and memorable holiday moment. All you have to do is pop over to a department store and there will be a plethora of options—and more than likely a small, slightly annoying army of sales associates—happy to have you sample their scents.

Fair warning these fragrances can send a strong message, so let’s just say be careful when you’re choosing. In case you need some help, here are some outstanding suggestions:

Best Holiday Fragrances for Men: Versace Eros Flame

The head notes are particularly vivacious: Fresh, juicy Italian fruits such as lemon, tangerine, and bitter orange are mellowed with notes of black pepper from Madagascar and enveloped in aromatic wild rosemary. Through an olfactory wave of pepperwood, geranium, and rose facets, we reach the base notes where precious woods such as Texas cedar, patchouli coeur, Haitian vetiver, mountain oak moss accord, and sandalwood subtly blend to create a soft and sensuous roundness. And the tonka bean perfectly mingles with vanilla.

Here’s a look behind-the-scenes from the Versace Eros Flame Campaign:

K by Dolce Gabbana

K by Dolce&Gabbana, the brand-new fragrance for men, celebrates a new era of masculinity. It captures the essence of a man in his element, a man who is the king of his everyday life. The fragrance opens with zesty citruses that invigorate the senses: an energetic fusion of sparkling blood orange and pressed Sicilian lemon. Their effervescence is tinged with the fresh bite of juniper berry, warmed by amber and clary sage, and blended with crisp geranium and restorative lavandin. These notes are ignited by an arresting spark of spicy pimento essence—an ingredient seldom used in perfumery—which adds a touch of heat, kindling the heart of the fragrance and  amplifying its masculine energy. The scent further unfolds to a base of warm woods,  sensual cedarwood merging with earthy vetiver, before yielding to the sweet spiciness  of patchouli.

Acqua di Colonia Nostalgia

Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella’s intent with this fragrance was to capture scents associated with Millemiglia race cars. Featuring notes of wood, leather, and rubber, Aqua di Colonia Nostalgia really does bring to mind antique cars. One whiff and it evokes tires worn out by acceleration and sudden braking. There’s a hint of gasoline and leather. It’s not for everyone, but it’s certainly dramatic.

BYREDO Night Veil Trio – Sellier

This fragrance and the two below make up the BYREDO Night Veil Trio. Distilled into a pure essence, each Night Veils fragrance taps noble raw materials chosen with meticulous care. With its high concentration, this new trio reinvents a new perfume ritual.

Distinguished, sombre, smoky, Sellier is a truly unbridled concentration of leather. The olfactory surprise explodes from the very first second. Sellier teleports us to a vintage smoking room with precious tobacco leaves, antique books, and age-worn leather club chairs.

BYREDO Night Veil Trio – Reine de Nuit

Reine de Nuit is a testament to how empowering a rich floral perfume can be in the twilight hours. It revives the rich tradition of oriental perfumes and celebrates the intrinsic seductiveness of rose. Reine de Nuit has a sensual and spellbinding scent.

BYREDO Night Veil Trio – Casablanca Lilly

Casablanca Lily was inspired by the thriving city that rises on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. From its Berber roots to its colonial heritage, Casablanca’s modern identity is a mix of diverse cultures, a place in constant flux between tradition and modernity. Given time, the city unravels itself, revealing the most amazing corners, a vibrant kaleidoscope of Moroccan life found nowhere else. The fragrance surrounds you like the elegance of the city that inspired it.

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. We update when possible, but deals expire and prices can change. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
Questions? Reach us at shop@mensjournal.com.

Christmas is fast approaching, and it’s time to get down to holiday business. There’s simply no more time to lose; buy now, or risk being the rotten egg at the holiday dinner table. Fortunately, Huckberry has got you covered and is pulling out all the stops to make sure this holiday season is a successful one.

Right now, Huckberry has some great prices on clothes and gear and is offering free shipping in the US. And there’s something for everyone—the adventurer, the foodie, and the fashionista. Most of the Sunski line of shades is marked down 25 percent, from the classic Navarros ($ 43, down from $ 58) to Huckberry’s exclusive take on the Dipseas ($ 55). There’s also a big sale on the ultra-cozy Glerups camp shoes. We particularly love The Boot ($ 133, from $ 155).

There’s more. For the next seven days, Huckberry is introducing its Deal of the Day. The lineup is as follows:

Wednesday 12/12: Buckler’s Grooming Kit 25% off
Thursday 12/13: Select Blankets up to 25% off
Friday 12/14: Biolite Firepit Bundle 30% off
Saturday 12/15: Candles up to 25% off
Sunday 12/16: Chippewa Exclusive 20% off
Monday 12/17: Japanese Chef Knives 15% off
Tuesday 12/18: Reversible French Terry 25% off

These deals will be valid for 24 hours only, starting at 9am PST daily. So if you’ve got your eye on something, you’d best set yourself a reminder.

Still in the dark about what to buy (or ask for) for Christmas this year? Here are a few things we wouldn’t mind finding under our tree.

Form•Function•Form Horween Leather Weekender Watch

The adjustable rugged leather band is set off by the simple sophistication of the Midday Timex watchface. (It also comes in black and chronograph versions, if you want to snazz it up a bit.) We appreciate that the button stud in the band is set up near the watch, so it doesn’t scrape the desk while we type. It’s the little things that make us happy.

[$ 80, huckberry.com]

Pappy & Company Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup

We’re talking American maple syrup, harvested in spring 2015 from Bissell Maple Farm in Ohio, that’s aged 6 months in retired Pappy Van Winkle 15-year bourbon barrels. Look for subtle but distinguished flavors of vanilla, butter, oak, and of course, Pappy. It’s great in recipes (maple Sriracha wings!), cocktails, or, we suppose, on pancakes.

[$ 38 for 13 oz.; huckberry.com]

Vuarnet Glacier XL

From James Bond to The Dude, a legendary silhouette for legendary explorers. High-performance, low maintenance, and pure panache, these iconic shades are normally $ 690. Also available in a tortoise shell frame with smoked lenses.

[$ 519; huckberry.com]

White Mammoth Tusk and Turquoise Vein Damascus Knife

If you’re flush in shades and slippers, perhaps you’d care for something a bit more rustic? The entire line of Santa Fe Stoneworks knives is cut up to 30 percent off right now, like this simply stunning specimen. It’s normally well over $ 200.

[$ 175; huckberry.com]

Flint and Tinder Flannel-lined Waxed Trucker Jacket

Waxed cotton jackets look great and work well at keeping water out. But this F and T takes it to the next level by lining it with flannel—all the way down the sleeves.

[$ 220; huckberry.com]

Ethics Supply Co. Peak Bagging Soap

These small-batch charcoal soaps are crafted to recreate the locales of the mountain ranges they represent. The smell of the Grand Tetons soap is reminiscent (see what we did there?) of engelmann spruce, tree moss, and birch pitch.

[$ 14; huckberry.com

Ethics Supply Co.

All-Weather Duckboot

Huckberry’s own duckboot is perfect for hiking, whether it’s in the woods or on the streets. 100 percent waterproof, it’s got a sneaker-like rubber sole for comfort and durability. It’s kind of like a Jeep for your feet.

[$ 180; huckberry.com]

Danner Vertigo 917

Consider this some of our editors’ go-to boot this year. Classy but tough, it’s outfitted with all the technical details that make Danner’s trail boots so popular—but with a lightweight sole and twin gores for easy on and off.

[$ 220; huckberry.com]

W&P Design + Chili Lab Homemade Hot Sauce Kit

Adventurous dudes love hot sauce, so give him the tools to make his own with this easy, self-contained kit. It’s got all the ingredients and supplies to make two distinct, delicious hot sauces: The Forager’s Blend is a red sauce with deep notes of berries, wood smoke, and earth; the Grove Blend is a yellow sauce with bright notes of citrus, green herbs, and cut grass.

[$ 45; huckberry.com]

Upstate Stock American Mohair Beanie

Soft and silky to the touch, mohair is actually renowned for its durability and strength. We really like that the tag comes off so easily. Available in a veriety of colors, these beanies are knitted right here in the USA.

[$ 32; huckberry.com]

Ridge Aluminum Wallet + Money Clip

The perfect size to slip right into your front pocket, it’s thin and small—3.3″x2.2″—but it can carry up to 12 cards. Pure aluminum blocks RFID skimming devices.

[$ 72; huckberry.com]

Los Poblanos Beard Box

High in the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, the folks at Los Poblanos Inn & Organic Farm have been hand-making organic grooming products since the 1930s. Created with all natural, USDA certified organic materials, the Beard Box includes sage and cedarwood soap, scented beard oil, lavendar lip salve, and a wooden comb.

[$ 50; huckberry.com]

Give’R 4-Season Gloves w/ Wax Coating

Made for everything from stoking the campfire to ice fishing, these all-weather, all leather gloves are waterproof as well as Thinsulated. Sizes range from small to double XL, so they’re made for everyone. And they come in black, too.

[$ 114; huckberry.com]

This Is Ground Bandito Lifestyle Roll

Man, we need this just to roll up all our cords. This Is Ground always finds creative solutions to everyday problems with well designed, high-quality handmade leather goods, and the Bandito solves a quandary we didn’t even know we had.

[$ 65; huckberry.com]

Mystery Ranch Mission Duffel/Backpack Hybrid – 55L

Flush with features that make it stand out from the rest, the one that we like the most is this hybrid’s oval shape, which not only helps it lay flat for easier packing but lets it rest more comfortable when worn as a backpack.

If you’re looking for a smaller, go-anywhere, do-anything backpack, Mystery Ranch’s Urban Assault ($ 139) is the way to go.

[$ 165; huckberry.com]

Arcade Belt Co. YOSAR Guide Belt

Exclusive to Huckberry, 100 percent of all revenue from the sale of these YOSAR belts goes to benefit Yosemite Search And Rescue.

[$ 30; huckberry.com]

Klhip Ultimate Clipper

Surgical stainless steel and precision crafting make this the world’s sexiest (?!), most efficient nail clipper. Better ergonomic balance creates better control and a more comfortable grip for a smooth, sharp, precise cut so that filing isn’t even necessary.

[$ 70; huckberry.com]

Proof Field Jacket

A modern spin on the M65 Field Jacket used by the military, this is a fantastic top layer that pairs perfectly with a sweater or button-down (or both). We really like that we can access all five pockets—including a secret stash pocket for our phone, wallet, whatever—without unzipping the jacket.

[$ 175; huckberry.com]

GrowlerWerks uKeg 64oz. Stainless Steel Growler

As long as Huckberry keeps selling the uKeg, we’re gonna keep putting it in our gift guides. It’s just that cool of a product. It keeps beer fresh and cold for—literally—weeks, and comes with 10 CO2 cartridges. What adventurous dude wouldn’t love to find one of these under the tree?

[$ 137; huckberry.com]

American Mountain Whiskey Glasses—Set of 4

Made of lead-free handblown glass, each features a unique topographic impression of one of America’s greatest mountain peaks: Half Dome, Denali, Mt. Rainer, and Mt. Whitney. You can also buy these a la carte for $ 30 each.

Last-Minute Swimwear to Buy Before Summer Ends

It’s the tail end of summer—but don’t pack up your swimwear just yet. There’s plenty more time to frolic in the saltwater and enjoy a last-minute sand-strewn vacation. And what do you need for the rest of the dog days? A fresh new swimsuit to match. Here, three cool labels to keep in stock for the rest of the swelter.

The Line: Ward Whillas
The Backstory: The longtime friends Rosie Ward Densen and Alicia Whillas have always known that they wanted to start a label together. Initially, a ready-to-wear brand felt like the most natural next step—which made sense coming off of ten years working as designers at Marc Jacobs, The Row, and Proenza Schouler—but what was even more instinctive for the two Aussie-born buddies? Swimwear.
The Look: Understated and sophisticated. Upon first glance, there is no mistaking the designers’ penchants for athletic-minded silhouettes and graphic, minimal prints. Upon further inspection, one learns that each bikini and one-piece is also smartly assembled. Each and every suit (made from quick-dry Italian fabrics) is constructed using new, heat-sealed technologies that were previously only utilized in high-performance activewear. In layman’s terms? Seamless, sculpting, and UV protecting. Oh, and reversible.
Where to Find Them: Bergdorf Goodman and select concept stores including Opening Ceremony.

The Line: Rochelle Sara
The Backstory: Rochelle Sara Gan grew up competitively training with her local Florida swim team. For the designer, racing garb is second skin. So, when she left Giulietta to design her namesake label, she applied the best of function (woven rather than knitted, jersey fabrics) and fashion (sleek silhouettes in a superchic palette) to her standout suits.
The Look: Think back to the nineties and what you would imagine Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Christy Turlington Burns, and Kara Young wearing while vacationing. That nostalgic nod turns up in the minimal yet severe shapes of each piece. And best of all, they’re updated in sporty cuts that more closely resemble a Helmut Lang sports bra rather than an itty-bitty bikini top.
Where to Find Them: rochellesara.com

The Line: Matte Swim
The Backstory: The debut Australian swimwear designer Ilona Hamer first got her start at Australian Vogue. It was there she accredits the invaluable lesson that “you don’t need everything; you just need the right things.” Hamer, who still has her hand in the editorial world as a contributing fashion editor for Russh magazine as well as fashion director at Unconditional magazine, designs between New York City and Sydney, Australia, alongside her business partner and sister Peta Heinsen.
The Look: To the editor turned designer, the right things don’t include padding, cutouts, or strings dangling off one’s bathers. The collection is all about creating a sense of confidence and a sense of ease via a concise three-piece, three-color offering of the timeless classics: a simple shelf-bra set, a demure triangle top and high-wasted briefs, and plunging one-piece that features an athletic crisscross across the back.
Where to Find Them: Directly order online for now, matteswim.com, but this October, the brand will launch e-commerce.

Woman Arrested For Choking Granddaughter While Last-Minute Shopping

Diana Hendren of Albuquerque, New Mexico should have tapped into her zen state of mind during a recent last-minute shopping tripping because she’s being accused of the ultimate no-no.

Witnesses are saying that she choked out her granddaughter after an accidental money dropping incident.

Reports NYDailyNews:

An angry granny choked her granddaughter as they were Christmas shopping in a busy New Mexico store after she dropped her money on the floor, police said.

Stressed-out Diana Hendren allegedly grabbed the youngster by the throat as they searched for presents at J.C. Penney in Albuquerque on Sunday, reports KOAT.

Workers reportedly stepped in after hearing the child screaming, “Don’t choke me.”

They dialed 911 and cops arrived.

Hendren told officers she was angry with her younger relative for dropping her cash.

Emergency crews drove the girl, whose age has not been revealed, to hospital so she could be checked out. Her current condition is not known.

Hendren now faces child abuse charges.

It’s never that serious. Especially over some last-minute shopping on Christmas.

Last-Minute Gifts for Every Makeup-Loving Lady in Your Life

I know what you’re thinking: “Makeup is so personal. I don’t want to get her something she’ll never use.” I’m not telling you to buy her foundation or concealer (both of which are very personal). I’m talking about giving her collectible makeup sets and palettes that are only available this time of year, most of which bundle together products for a discount.

Let’s put it this way, I have more makeup than you could ever imagine and I still want the Tarte holiday signature item every year. Why? Well, the makeup is fabulous (skin-loving ingredients, staying power, flattering colors) and Tarte is always generous when it comes to stuffing these bags to the brim. But it’s also because I actually still use their makeup bags and containers I’ve amassed over the years. In fact right now I’m gazing at the mirrored jewelry box (Tarte 2011 Holiday Starlette Makeup Vanity) that once was full of makeup and now houses my jewelry.

And, you actually get rewarded for waiting so long. Many of these treasures are on sale! Everybody wins.

Tarte Bon Voyage Collector’s Set and Travel Bag ($ 59)

It’s only fitting that I start with Tarte’s 2014 signature holiday item. This Parisian vacation-inspired set, encased in a purple and gold makeup bag, includes: a palette of 20 Amazonian clay eye shadows, Deluxe lights, camera, lashes 4-in-1 mascara, Limited-edition deluxe cheek stain in Muse, LipSurgence lip gloss in Visionary, LipSurgence lip tint in Romantic, Deluxe maracuja oil, Deluxe smooth operator Amazonian clay finishing powder. Available at Sephora.com.

Make Up For Ever Makeup Studio Case (now $ 39)

She doesn’t shy away from adding a little shimmer to her eye makeup. Give her this magical little black box that has 12 vivid eye shadows, a step-by-step guide and full-size Artist Liner eyeliner. Bonus: The black case is certainly reusable as a jewelry box. I was surprised it didn’t play music (though I’m pretty sure I heard Chopin when I saw the shadows). Available at Sephora.com.

Shu Uemura Shupette Has-it-All Eye & Lip Palette ($ 89)

Perhaps she loves kitties as much as her cat eyes? Then you’re going to want to get her something from this collaboration collection between Shu Uemura and Karl Lagerfeld. Inspired by fashion’s favorite feline Shupette, this kit includes a brightly colored makeup palette and a fun furry clutch that looks like, well, Shupette. Available at www.shuuemura-usa.com

TheBalm Balmsai Eyeshadow and Brow Palette with Shaping Stencils ($ 39.50)

This is the ideal palette for your friend who always compliments your eye makeup but complains she can’t apply it to herself. This eye shadow and brow powder palette includes stencils for making the perfect brows, smoky eyes and winged eyes dummy proof. Available at thebalm.com.

Stila New Year’s Eve Glam Set (now $ 49)

She loves statement jewelry. She loves a statement lip. This collaboration between Stila and Bauble Bar gives her all the essentials she needs to get gorgeous on New Year’s Eve: a shimmery white shadow for highlighting the brow bone and inner corners of the eyes, a longwear mascara, a fiery red liquid lip and a fun bracelet. Bonus: She can help her hangover the next day with a little retail therapy — the set includes a $ 10 gift card to Baublebar.com. Available at StilaCosmetics.com.

Flower Total Package Complete Set ($ 19.98)

Your teen dream will actually look away from her phone for a moment to tinker with this makeup set, which includes 4 Shadow Play Eyeshadows, 4 Kiss Stick Velvet Lip Colors and 1 Lash Knockout Volumizing Mascara. Bonus: Even if she overdoes it, the hues are so pretty she will still look chic. Available at Walmart and Walmart.com.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Tamanna Palette ($ 29)

This is a lot of gorgeous eye shadow shades packed into one tiny palette. A collaboration with makeup artist and social media powerhouse Tamanna, this palette is perfect for any woman who loves to play with different looks. Available at AnastasiaBeverlyHills.com.

Hourglass Limited Edition Ambient Lighting Blush Palette ($ 58)

She always strategizes where she’s going to sit to avoid bad lighting. Don’t let her ever stumble into unflattering light with this soft-focus cheek palette that blends finishing powders and blush colors to give her a natural-looking glow. Available at Sephora.com.

Topshop Smoky Eye Set ($ 24)
This out-of-the-box smoky eye set will give her everything she needs to create the sultriest of smoky eyes on New Year’s Eve. The set includes a Smokey Eye Kit in Golden Aura, 3D Curve Mascara and Kohl in Coal. Available at us.topshop.com.

Lancome All Over Face Palette ($ 55)

She works all day and doesn’t have time to stop home before hitting the holiday party circuit. This postcard-sized palette has nine “day to night” eye shadows and a blush and contour powder to get her party ready. Available at Lancome-USA.com.

MAC Cosmetics Keepsakes/Plum Eye Bag ($ 39.50)

Does your lady friend have big blue eyes? Give her this set which includes Extra Dimension Eye Shadows, In Extreme Dimension Lash Mascara and Powerpoint Eye Liner — all in a warm plummy purple color palette. Bonus: this set would also look smashing with green eyes. Available at Maccosmetics.com.
