People of Brooklyn and the Places They Love

Joshua D. Fischer

Genre: Photography

Publish Date: May 24, 2016

Publisher: Skyhorse

Seller: SIMON AND SCHUSTER DIGITAL SALES INC

Based on the column The Regulars on the New York magazine partner Bedford + Bowery , the celebrities and everyday people who love the local joints of the world’s coolest borough. Meet the Regulars captures a previously unseen and entertaining portrait of the people of Brooklyn and the places they love. In talking with the regulars at bars, restaurants, and shops in the world-famous borough, author Joshua Fischer delivers deep and delightful stories presented alongside stunning snapshots from accomplished photographers including Nina Westervelt (Vogue.com, New York Times ), Phil Provencio ( Variety , Saturday Night Live , and CBS), and Nicole Disser ( Bedford + Bowery and Brooklyn Magazine online). Meet the Regulars reveals the great power in the connections we make with the people and places where we live. Originally an interview series on the New York magazine partner Bedford + Bowery , Meet the Regulars introduces us to a diverse and changing Brooklyn through its regulars: the first-generation American Latino café owner who drinks Coors out of a can and loves a good debate with the lawyer and plumber at his corner bar, the blogger who fixes her hair and heart at her cherished salon, the lady so loyal to her local bar she has its logo tattooed on her arm, the Asian hipster couple who drink and dance for "exercise" at their new-school Brooklyn hangout, and the burgeoning filmmaker who walks twenty blocks for sage advice from a legendary bartender inside a bowling alley. Familiar faces include party rocker Andrew W. K. spicing things up at the Thai joint from his early days, Saturday Night Live performer Sasheer Zamata reliving a break-up at her go-to brunch spot, Radiolab host Jad Abumrad sippin' whiskey to Black Sabbath, beloved NY1 news anchor Pat Kiernan chowing down on meatballs, actor Jessica Pimentel ( Orange Is the New Black ) championing her local metal bar, actor Kevin Corrigan ( Goodfellas , Pineapple Express ) contemplating a Guinness at his favorite Irish pub, and more. From Meet the Regulars : "These are stories about people finding a home in an ephemeral world of bars, restaurants, shops, and clubs that open, explode, and burn out like so many stars hidden in that bright and sleepless New York night sky." —Joshua D. Fischer, from his introduction Meet the regulars of Meet the Regulars : "It's a sense of continuity. You thread your history through a place. . . . That's what makes me a regular." — Jad Abumrad , host of public radio's Radiolab , regular at Splitty "Once you have the cell phone number of the bar owner, then you're a regular." —Twin comics the Lucas Brothers , regulars at Tutu's "I can tell if a person is cool if their vibe mixes with this place." — Sasheer Zamata , Saturday Night Live cast member, regular at Enid's "Brooklyn is this unattractive, could-never-go-to-the-prom borough. And now, not only does everyone want to take you to the prom, but everyone wants you on their arm." — Eric Adams , Brooklyn borough president, regular at Woodland "Read the book. Talk to everyone about it. . . . Move to Brooklyn with nothing but the contents of a suitcase. Be in the world's most annoying band. Get a bunch of hideous tattoos. Whatever." — Meredith Graves of punk band Perfect Pussy, regular at Roman's "This bar saved my life." — Ariel Pellman , costume designer, regular at the Way Station

Meet the Brand Introducing ‘Soft Masculinity’ to Men’s Skincare

Next time you restock your skincare essentials, pay special attention to the hallmarks that epitomize men’s grooming. Notice the monochromatic or grayscale packaging, with hard lines and minimal graphics. Does the product’s overall vibe skew rugged, sporty, and outdoorsy? Take a sniff. Catch those notes of sage, tobacco, mint, or musk? There’s a reason behind this relatively narrow spectrum of characteristics: Each element has been strategically engineered to be a perfect foil to women’s products and cosmetics— overcorrecting for bright colors; uplifting names, and fruity, floral aromas.

For the founders of men’s skincare brand Soft, this pink-versus-blue tactic is shockingly outdated. Patrick Dolezal, Emily Farra, and James O’Dwyer—three friends who met at Indiana University—joined forces to tackle the men’s aisle, redefining how the marketplace can interpret and sell masculinity in the form of cosmetics. For the launch of their debut product, the Soft Moisture Mask, masculinity means coloring outside the lines. This is a mask for the modern man. Or anyone, really. And that’s the point.

The Moisture Mask by Soft
The Moisture Mask by Soft Justin Hollar

“The philosophy behind Soft is really rooted in the name,” says Dolezal. “Not long ago, if you weren’t ‘masculine enough,’ or you showed any sort of emotion, you were ‘soft,’ and that was considered a negative thing. But being soft is actually great—it means you’re in touch with your emotions, you’re okay with being sensitive, and mostly you’re just comfortable with who you are.” It also has a double meaning: The mask is supremely hydrating, making your skin incredibly soft.

Could Fad Diets Lead to a Long, Healthy Life?

The modern man actually wants to embrace skincare as a self-care ritual rather than a hygienic necessity—and knows that it doesn’t make him any less of a man. How much longer can we wait for brands to acknowledge this natural evolution? With its unconventional branding and engaging messaging, the trio behind Soft shares a message that’s more than skin-deep: that antiquated notions of masculinity need not persist.

“When we began researching the men’s brands out there, we really didn’t find many options,” O’Dwyer chimes in. “Most of the ‘men’s brands’ weren’t selling masks—or if they did, the branding felt really outdated and didn’t resonate with our New York lifestyle.”

Just take a peek at Soft’s website. From the ’70s-inspired graphics to the diverse cast of models wearing pastel shirts and holding flowers, we see that the approachably confident “soft guy” eschews what it means to be a man’s man. It’s more aligned with the “soft masculinity” cultural movement spurred by male K-Pop stars who proudly wear makeup (just not all the way there).

Soft model Ryan, who's also an artist and designer
Soft model Ryan, who’s also an artist and designer Justin Hollar

“We tried to subvert these archaic rules of what is ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine,’ ” he adds. “At the end of the day, we think the guy who’s buying Soft is into the fact that we represent a departure from the historically conservative narrative around men’s skincare and masculinity.”

How to Clean Up Your Facial Hair for Spring

O’Dwyer himself is a believer that the ritualistic aspect of skincare lends itself to general well-being. “We really enjoy the ritual: dimming the lights, putting on a record, listening to a guided meditation, burning palo santo, and smoothing on the mask at the end of the day,” he professes. “That’s something everyone can (and should) treat themselves to at least once a week.” Soft packages up self-care quite nicely, with guided meditations, cocktail recipes, and self-care advice posted on their site. For a self-care starter pack, you can purchase the Ritual Set, which throws in Palo Santo sticks with the Moisture Mask for spiritual cleansing.

“Our branding and photo shoots were conceived to fill a void in the market, but we never wanted to exclude people who are female or non-binary. It was always important to us that people of every gender would identify with Soft—especially since it’s a complete myth that skincare should vary by gender,” tells Dolezal. “Skin is skin, and most of these products have the same ingredients in them. We’ve had great feedback from women from the very beginning; some of them are really into our soft masculinity messaging, but others don’t seem to consider Soft a ‘men’s brand’ at all.”

The Ritual Set by Soft
The Ritual Set by Soft Justin Hollar

With “toxic masculinity” in the rearview mirror, the launch product had to be non-toxic—naturally. So the founders chose to abide by strict EU standards in cosmetic production. Whereas the U.S. FDA bans or restricts just 11 (!) potentially harmful chemicals, the EU’s list features over 1,400 elements. “It was a no-brainer for us, and we didn’t need to compromise anything in terms of quality or efficacy by avoiding those ingredients,” says Dolezal.

How to Get Chris Evans’ Manicured Beard and Slicked-Back Hairstyle

By tapping the expertise of a formulist, the team developed an incredibly effective moisturizing mask, one that boasts exceptional concentrations of enriching ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration, niacinamide for skin barrier protection, and squalane for smoothness. Nailing down the scent was also imperative. They landed on refreshing ginger root, a zesty aroma with a subtle earthiness that could easily differentiate itself from a sea of overpowering mint and cedar. Ginger is also reputed to protect against free radicals.

As for the future, Soft has its eyes on expansion. “We want to create products that tap into the ritual of skincare, from additional face masks to bath products, candles, and other items,” says O’Dwyer. “We also like the idea of keeping our product range small so we can really focus on each item and ensure it’s the very best.”

While they’re sticking with a direct-to-consumer online business, the Soft team is also exploring brick-and-mortar retail opportunities, and collaborations with like-minded names in fashion, skincare, music, and beyond. “People are increasingly drawn to brands with a clear purpose and a limited offering, not the ones that are trying to be everything for everyone.”

We give Soft a hard “yes.”

Meet the New Faces of Plus-Size Modeling

PARIS — Before stepping up on the Fendi catwalk on Thursday, Paloma Elsesser was hardly a unknown figure: the American model features regularly in Glossier campaigns and is a face of Fenty Beauty.
But walking for an LVMH-owned luxury house is another thing. While most Millennial-savvy, digital native brands have embraced diversity from their very inception, getting better representation of all body sizes is a relatively new phenomenon for the higher spheres of fashion — especially the European ones.
“Plus-size models started in the U.S. quite a while ago,” said Nathalie Cros-Coitton, chief executive officer of Women Management modeling agency and founder of its new Curve W360 division dedicated to curvier body types. “Maybe because the American population is a better reflection of that particular market. But what we’ve seen recently with social media and the personal expression it allows is that brands have finally realized there is a wholly different audience out there.”
While models like Ashley Graham and Tess Holliday have truly made their mark and become ambassadors for body diversity within the industry, the second wave of body positivity is brought on by a flurry of new faces that are scouted on social media, where some of them already have

From Digital Design to Upcycling: Meet the Students Pushing for More Sustainability in Fashion

Amber Slooten, Amsterdam Fashion Institute (Netherlands)
Amber Slooten graduated from AMFI in 2016 with a minor in Hypercraft, the school’s virtual design section, which was launched 10 years ago. During a gap year spent at MediaLab, a division of the Amsterdam University of Applied Science, she discovered a virtual design software named CLO3D: alongside game designers, interior designers and fashion branders, Slooten created a virtual reality fashion show named SecondSight, to be watched on mobile phones using 3-D glasses.
The project lead her to reconsider her design practice at AMFI. “We were creating so many clothes, I was forever dragging all these different collections on my bike for each project, and when the project was over they would just sit in my closet,” remembered Slooten. The student pushed her teachers to allow her to present an entirely digital graduate collection, projected via holographic layers onto a dancer, and ended up teaching a course helping students to use the CLO3D software. Since Slooten’s digital project, a number of other students were able to graduate without producing a physical collection of clothes, effectively changing the fashion school’s assessment methods.

Amber Slooten’s graduate collection at AMFI was presented in holographic form.

Meet the Woman Behind the Modeling Industry’s Dutch Dominance

marit code management models

Having long been a destination for scouts in search of elegant new beauties, the Netherlands is responsible for some of fashion’s favorite faces: Modeling icons like ’90s super Karen Mulder, Doutzen Kroes, and Bardot doppelgänger Lara Stone all got their start at home in the Netherlands. One of the reasons behind the current Dutch dominance on the high-fashion scene? Code Management’s Marit Simons, the woman responsible for the careers of several of the current era’s biggest stars, from Imaan Hammam (whom Simons spotted on the streets of Amsterdam) to Prada campaign star Nimue Smit (whom Simons discovered via social media). This season alone, several of the most successful girls—including J.W.Anderson opener Nirvana Naves and Céline star Vera van Erp—got their start thanks to Simons. With the Dutch wave showing no signs of slowing down, Simons explains what separates the new generation of Dutch models from their predecessors and which faces to keep an eye on for 2016.

How did you first become interested in scouting?
As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in photography, design, and architecture. My plan was to become a photographer or a fashion designer. I’m part of the first generation that grew up with the Internet, so I was doing my own research about the things I liked—discovering new bands, building websites, taking pictures. That led to discovering fashion designers, models, and photographers. When I was about 15 years old I became intrigued by models like Gemma Ward, Lily Donaldson, and Lisa Cant, who were all over Italian Vogue, and I became fascinated with the idea of discovering such unique faces. I became curious about the infrastructure behind the models. At the time, I was asked to do some research for a popular website that kept track of up-and-coming models. Through them I got in touch with some agencies in Holland and started scouting.

After a while, I felt like these agencies were missing out on some opportunities. They did not see things the way I saw them as a young person. I became friends with the photographers I met and started to understand what they needed to accomplish their ideas for a shoot. I started to have my own vision about what an agency should be, a haven that focuses on a few select girls in a very personal way with high-end international goals. That’s when I started Code.

Nimue Smit

Expand

Nimue Smit

Who was the first model you discovered?
The first model I discovered was Nimue Smit. I spotted her picture on a social media website and asked her to meet me with her mom or dad. I was very young at the time for an agent, and her mom later on confessed to me she thought her daughter would be doing some local modeling, nothing too big. A year later, [Nimue] went to New York to shoot the Prada campaign.

What makes scouting in the Netherlands different than scouting in other locations?
In general the people in our country have “tall genes”: We’re a tall—and friendly—bunch of people. That makes a lot of girls more likely to model.

Dutch models have a very pure kind of beauty that radiates health and happiness: high cheekbones, strong eyebrows, full lips, and a fit body. Holland is known for their blonde-hair, blue-eyed beauties like Doutzen [Kroes], Karen Mulder, and Daphne Groeneveld, but there is another generation of young, racially mixed kids growing up into stunning adults. Imaan [Hammam] comes from that generation with a Moroccan mom and dad from Egypt, and Nirvana [Naves] with a Dutch dad and mom from Guyana.

Imaan Hammam

Expand

Imaan Hammam

Photo: Courtesy of Imaan Hammam / @imaanhammam

Why do you think so many successful models come out of the Netherlands?
Dutch people have a softness and positive energy about them that makes them very likable. We also tend to be very active, ambitious people with over-planned agendas. We grow up riding our bikes through the rain, we’re sporty and persistent. We work hard and don’t expect too much. When good things come our way, we’re appreciative and will work harder to keep it up. This down-to-earth mentality allows a lot of Dutch models to stay on top. They’re rarely one-day flies.

Who are the girls we should be keeping an eye on for the future?
Kiki Boreel and Kim van der Laan are two girls with a lot of potential. Kiki just cut her hair, giving her a rock ’n’ roll edge, and Kim looks just like an angel with her light blonde curls and full lips. We also just signed a new, very cool girl by the name of Alex Neij that a lot of people are excited about.

Meet Jerry Lorenzo, the Man Behind L.A.’s Coolest Menswear: Just Ask Rihanna and Bieber

fear of god brand

“It’s just humbling,” says the soft-spoken Jerry Lorenzo via phone, about the rapid success of his menswear label, Fear of God. The line, whose latest offering is available for preorder starting November 1, might only be four collections deep, but it already counts stylish A-listers—including Kanye and Kim Kardashian West, David Beckham, and Justin Bieber—as fans. “I essentially started to go to downtown Los Angeles to make pieces that were missing from my closet,” he says. “Selfishly, so I could look cooler.”

That approach seems to be paying off: Many of his signature jeans and plaid shirts sell out within weeks of posting on the brand’s website. Citing the style of basketball star Allen Iverson and grunge legend Kurt Cobain as his two main influences, Lorenzo attributes the popularity of the line to a foundation of the most essential items in an everyday wardrobe. “Nothing of what I’m doing is anything that hasn’t been seen before,” he says. “It’s sweatshirts, it’s bombers, it’s a dad shirt. It’s classic American menswear with my take on it.”

Jerry Lorenzo

Using the imagery of iconic American rock bands as a starting point, his vintage-inspired band tees have that evergreen cool factor, too, and have been spotted on the likes of Justin Bieber and David Beckham—which only makes sense, given that the brand’s name sounds like it was swiped from the lineup of an alt-rock music festival. “I’m not a graphic artist. For me the best version of a graphic tee is a vintage band tee,” Lorenzo says. “It’s the fact that when you wear it, it might spark a conversation with some 40-year-old fan of Metallica that you bump into in the grocery store.”

It doesn’t hurt that some high-profile women in music have shown interest in the label, as well, including a certain bootylicious superstar. “I had to pause and screenshot Beyoncé when she wore the Fear of God thermals in the video for ‘7/11,’ ” he says. “That was one of the most awesome things.” Lorenzo says his focus is strictly on menswear for now, but who knows— perhaps a Fear of Goddess women’s line is on the horizon.

Meet The High School Hero Who Jumped In To Defend Legally Blind Teen From Accused Bully

Cody Pines, 17, is being hailed as a hero after the teen was caught on tape taking down an accused bully who was allegedly beating up his legally blind high school classmate, Austin Higley, 16. Video of the incident went viral, with more than 26 million views, showing Higley being attacked by another student as Pines swiftly steps in to help him. The accused aggressor has been charged with misdemeanor battery.

Pines and Higley, students at Huntington Beach High School in Huntington Beach, CA, speak out together for the first time exclusively to Dr. Phil on Wednesday’s episode, with Austin giving his account of the incident, and Cody explaining what he was thinking when he jumped in to save Austin.

“I saw the kid getting into Austin’s face and stuff. I didn’t even notice it was Austin until I got closer and whenever I noticed it was Austin, that’s when I went to go help him,” Pines says in the video above. “I just ran up there and I just swung my arm. I was only trying to hit him once, I was just trying to get him off of him.”

“Honestly, I feel like you saved my life,” Higley responds.

Meet Giowana Cambrone, The Transgender Woman Who Tried To Help Brazil’s ‘Sustainability Network’ Push For More LGBT Rights

Giowana Cambrone is a charming woman with an incredible story. A transgender woman, LGBT activist, lawyer, professor of family law with a master’s degree in public policy and human development from Rio de Janeiro State University, Giowana participated in the coordination of the Rio de Janeiro branch of Rede Sustentabilidade (Sustainability Network) — a political party founded by Marina Silva– and played a key role in preparing the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB)/Rede coalition’s program for the 2014 elections.

In an interview, she told us about her personal experience, her view on the hetero-cis-normative society she lives in, and explained Rede’s views on sexual minorities.

Giowana also offered details on the controversy around chapters that addressed LGBT rights in Marina Silva’s program during the 2014 presidential elections.

Let me start with a personal question: How did you realize you were a woman? What was going on in your mind then?
I’ve known I was different from the hetero-cis-normative standard ever since I was a child. I remember watching the Silvio Santos show, a talent show where drag queens were performing. And then the host asked one of the drag queens how she felt. She gave an answer that would be considered inappropriate today, but I completely related to it. She said she felt like a woman trapped in a man’s body. From that moment on, I got to know myself better and I thought: “I am not alone, there are other people like me.” But I lived in the state of Minas Gerais, and there was a lot of prejudice. I didn’t feel accepted. I felt guilty, abnormal and even sinful. But I overcame all that.

What has changed since?
A lot has changed. Today I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I lived a life that wasn’t mine. I was unhappy. I was trapped for 30 years, with an identity that wasn’t mine. Gender rules that are imposed on us are very strict, and they oppressively dictate our behaviors. The transition process was not without struggle and pain– both emotional and physical. I had to deconstruct an identity shaped by the gender assigned to me at birth, and build another one that actually represented me. It was like I was impersonating a character. There was no Giowana in the old Giowana.

In an earlier interview, you said: “We live in a state with an imaginary heterosexual population.” Could you explain to our readers what you meant by that?
Actually, this is a concept proposed by a feminist named Ochy Curiel, who developed the notion of the “heterosexual nation.” Using this concept, I realized that heteronormativity and cisnormativity are very prevalent among the hegemonic ruling class. And this is reflected in public policies, legislation and the entire structure of the state. As a result, it is very hard to approve legislation that favors the LGBT population, even when it addresses very basic things, such as same-sex marriage or the recognition of trans as an identity. This suppresses access to essential citizen rights.

What do you think about the controversy around the Family Statute?
The Family Statute is a stillborn law. Today, the definition of family is much more pluralistic and diverse. Laws often become irrelevant due to the changes in the social dynamics, thus losing their purpose. But this law has been proposed without a social purpose. That is why I say it is stillborn. Moreover, they are proposing a Statute that goes against the interpretation of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which is the guardian of the Constitution. In fact, it proposes a threatening political discourse. The main problem is that it is a prohibitive and hate-oriented discourse. The proposed Family Statute violates the constitutional principles of equality, fairness and freedom. They are trying to approve a law that discriminates against other, non-standard family configurations…This greatly concerns me. What defines a family is the bond of love and affection, which cannot be extinguished by a law. The families outside this imposed “normative standard” will exist, regardless of the law.

You were the first transgender person to be appointed as part of the Sustainability Network. How was this experience? Are you no longer a coordinator?
I participated in the coordination of Rede Rio. It was a very good experience. I had to leave for personal reasons. I was busy getting my master’s degree and also going into the job market, which took up more of my time than I had hoped. But I’m still active with Rede and I’m dedicated to the project.

Many people mention the editing of Marina’s campaign program in 2014. How do you feel about what happened then?
I helped prepare that program. We held meetings with representatives of the LGBT groups in the coalition, and I drafted the proposals that would be submitted to the program. As a human rights activist for many years now, I learned that one must go for the whole package. And that’s what we proposed. However, we knew that there would be mediation. That is, the program would not include everything we proposed. Because a program means goals, for which you will fight with all your political capital to accomplish. In the meantime, between the proposals for the a program and the mediations, everything changed. Eduardo Campos died in an airplane accident, the campaign was reset, and Marina Silva had to take the lead. All of this disrupted the normal flow of events. On that Friday when it [the LGBT program] was launched, people called me and said: “The program is out, the program is out!” When I read it, I saw that the proposal had been published in full. They even kept my original punctuation. I was very pleased, of course, but I found it odd that they had published it in full. Obviously, there had been no mediation. The final, mediated version of the document was published the following day. I was very upset, not so much because of the program, which hadn’t been changed substantially, but because of the mistake [in the editing process].

Nevertheless, one must recognize that the proposed program was still the most advanced compared to those of the other candidates, because they kept the chapter that allows adoption by same-sex couples in the program, and upheld the João Neri Act, which provides for the civil requalification of transgender people. However, the misunderstanding that took place during the publication stage unfortunately weakened the campaign, and we started being attacked and accused of having changed the program after Malafaia’s (a conservative evangelical minister) opportunistic tweets.

Malafaia was never an ally of Rede, and is an extremely opportunistic public figure. Saying that Malafaia had a role to play in Rede means you know nothing at all about the movement. As I see it, Marina has no restrictions on LGBT civil rights. I think Marina is someone who is very open to this human rights issue. You just have to read the final version of the program to understand that. In the heat of the campaign, though, the winners were those who resorted to marketing strategies, rather than those who presented proposals and made written commitments.

Is there room for the LGBT population in Rede?
Of course! Rede was born with sustainability in mind. You cannot think of sustainability without considering diversity. Diversity applies to all aspects of life. There is cultural diversity, biological diversity, human diversity and, of course, sexual diversity. That’s one of Rede’s commitments.

It is a party that welcomes human diversity, a party that welcomes pluralism and the diversity of voices. Rede is not a party of one color. It was born with special attention to the human condition.

The Diversidade em Rede (Network Diversity) has used a horizontal approach and a knowledge-sharing exercise to discuss and build an LGBT agenda within the party. We have already gotten two resolution proposals approved, in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, to guide the party’s policies regarding sexual diversity, as well as push for a secular state. Additionally, we have welcomed new congressmen and members of other parties, and shared our values and agendas with them.

Finally, what can people do to help improve the quality of life of the trans population?
There is so much, but at the same time it is very simple. The main problem is disrespect. It is as if society wished it could make transgender people invisible. But they exist. They are a reality that most people would rather not see. They are bodies that challenge the concept of gender. “Abnormal” when compared to social standards and relegated to societal margins.

The main problem is in not acknowledging transgender identities, which leads to other problems, such as difficulties in finding jobs. The labor market rejects them. There is a lack of opportunity. Today, approximately 90 percent of this population are employed as sex workers. No other oppressed or marginalized population, women, black people or any others, has ever been reduced to a single economic activity. I am not judging those who work in this industry willingly. The problem is when it is the only option.

If you don’t work, you don’t live and you don’t eat. Some people think that the transgender population lives on air, or glitter, or glamour. No, transgender people have to eat, have to drink and have to dress. They must have at least two meals a day. They must have access to health care and education. Now. And from time to time, they should be able to go to the movies.

However, these needs are neglected. While the rest of the LGBT community is discussing and claiming their civil rights, transgender people still have to discuss their rights to the most basic needs. Even the physiological ones, such as which restrooms they are allowed to use, or social rights, like work, health care and education. Something unthinkable in the 21st century.

Meet the Makeup Artist Whose Bold New Vision Is Shaking Up Chanel

Photographed by Daniel Jackson, Vogue, September 2015

With her singular beauty vision, the makeup artist Lucia Pica is bringing a cool new attitude to Chanel.

Lucia Pica’s big love of color should hardly set alarm bells ringing. And yet it has. Literally. At London’s Tate Modern. It’s a Saturday afternoon, and in her attempt to really inspect the brushstrokes and exacting undertones of a Sonia Delaunay masterpiece, Chanel’s new global creative makeup and color designer has accidentally tripped the security borders, and the alarm is now reverberating across the busy exhibition hall. Mortified, the Italian makeup artist slides away from the scene until she safely turns a corner, whereupon she bursts into a fit of can-you-actually-believe-I-did-that giggles.

Bold pops of color are her thing, and Pica—who will be responsible for conceptualizing and developing Chanel’s cosmetics—represents something of a brave move for the French luxury house. She thinks nothing of applying glossy acid orange to lips, dusting lids in canary yellow ombréd-out to sooty black, or artistically painting a single stroke of Wite-Out white just below brows with the style of an Abstract Expressionist. But that’s not all she can do; Pica can just as skillfully turn her hand to a natural no-makeup makeup look. It’s a versatility honed on set with photographers Mario Testino, Mikael Jansson, Alasdair McLellan, and Willy Vanderperre, and backstage at shows like Roksanda and Peter Pilotto. She’s also behind Chanel’s beauty campaigns, making up the faces of Keira Knightley and the model Sigrid Agren.

At lunch at Brawn, one of her favorite local restaurants, not far from her home in neighboring Dalston, East London, she’s wearing vintage black Levi’s 615s paired with a chic white turtleneck. Her oversize stone-colored trench from Armani menswear is jauntily accessorized with Margaret Howell’s foldaway trilby and—what else?—Chanel’s classic monochrome ballet flats and 2.55 bag. “I’m really into black and white at the moment,” she says, smiling and sipping an Americano. “I’ve been Chanelified.

“Coco Chanel was such a punk in the way that she approached style and feminism,” Pica continues. “She gave power to women, made it about how we wanted to look and not about dressing to please others. She pioneered that, and it couldn’t have been easy.” The heavy-fringed brunette pauses before adding, “Yes—I’m reading a lot of her biographies. . . . ”

Pica, who grew up in Naples, was always interested in makeup but didn’t consider it as a career until much later. She moved at 22 to London, where she waitressed, working the night shift at Soho’s lively Cafe Boheme. After completing a brief makeup course, she did a stint at Shu Uemura’s counter and assisted a roll call of legendary female makeup artists, including Charlotte Tilbury.

“I knew she would be a star,” says Tilbury. “She’s got creative vision and really knows her art, film, and fashion references. It’s been great to see her develop her own makeup style over the years, which has a fresh, cool edge to it.” Plus, she adds, “I love her naughty sense of humor!”

Though Pica’s first full collection for Chanel won’t launch until late 2016, she is already clear on one thing: “I want the lineup to be modern and very straightforward. I want it to be super now, precise, and strong.” In preparation, she has been spending her time creating mood boards, gathering visuals that inspire her. Her references are broad: Art Deco postcards, images of Brutalist architecture, a snap of an edgy young girl spotted in an L.A. nightclub, a series of Polaroids of single-stem flowers pulled from the vast congratulatory bouquets she received when news broke of her appointment, and a handwritten note from an ex-boyfriend. When we duck into the florist Grace & Thorn on Hackney Road, a spriggy purple shamrock—otherwise known as a love plant—catches her eye. “Everything translates to a palette or a lipstick,” she says. “Whatever I look at, I see makeup.”

Meet the Model Turned Accessories Designer, Who’s Dries Van Noten’s Secret Weapon

sylvia van der klooster

With soulful eyes and dramatic cheekbones that recall a latter-day Vermeer painting, it’s easy to see why model Slyvia van der Klooster was plucked from a small farming town in Holland and thrust into the fashion spotlight back in the late ’90s. In a recent email interview, the Dutch beauty said that the best birthday present she ever got was making her runway debut for Prada when she was just 20 years old.

She soon became part of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s famiglia, too; for years both she and Giovanna Battaglia, now a much-photographed stylist, were the fit models for the house. Dolce & Gabbana weren’t the only ones to fall under Van der Klooster’s spell, she was a face of Versace beauty and walked for British showmen John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. Eighteen years later, and she’s still walking the runway.

These days, Van der Klooster does fittings and walks for Dries Van Noten, the romantic Antwerp-based designer, whose studio is a quick train ride from Amsterdam, Van der Klooster’s hometown, and just as bicycle friendly. She is a woman on the go, and on the rise: The demand for the handmade organic leather handbag often outstrips supply (though fellow Dutch model Saskia de Brauw scored one); her first movie, Debiel, is released this month; and then there are those street style photographers to pose for . . . .

Here, Van der Klooster talks about her inimitable style—a mash-up of vintage, prints, and flannel—working with Dries, and the Céline skirt that got away.

How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix of prints and colors. I don’t even own anything black. I have always had a crush on the ’70s and the grunge era, so I dress with a lot of layers and mix all kinds of prints and proportions. My closet is full of Dries Van Noten, which is fantastic to mix. His clothes are seasonless, so they suit me very well.

What are your favorite pieces in your closet right now?
The purple velvet boots from Dries Fall 2015—they are heavenly—and my flower-printed coat from Dries as well.

When did you start working with Dries?
I walked for Dries in the late ’90s, three times I think. He was always my absolute personal favorite. Three years ago I started doing the fittings with him in Antwerp. I live in Amsterdam and it’s only an hour and half away from his office.

What’s it like?
We start three or four months before the show with fittings. It is so very inspiring to see a Dries collection come together, as I said, I have been a fan for as long as I can remember and love the humble mentality of the Belgian people in general. Dries and his team are the nicest, down-to-earth people who work super hard. It doesn’t even feel like work sometimes because I am very interested in his way of thinking when it comes to making a collection.

How did you get into bag design?
I started making bags four years ago; I went to a bag-making school in the south of Holland where you learn everything from scratch: patterns, cutting, stitching. I make all my bags myself with organic vegetable-tanned leather. It takes me about a week to make one. Right now I have a long waiting list of people who want to order one, so I try to make them in between my work as a model.

Do you have any tips for dressing for bike riding?
Anything goes on a bike! I have [worn] a long evening gown on my bike to go to a Dutch Vogue party. [When I do that] I try to either tuck it under my bottom on the saddle or put a knot in it—you become creative. I lost a Céline skirt once because it got stuck in the wheel. I hope that never happens again.

Do you dress differently in Paris than at home?
Yes, in Holland I am more practical, especially when I work on my bags. In Paris I dress up more, [in] heels, dresses. I love how people dress in Paris as well, [and] that gives me more inspiration to dress up.

Do you have a favorite shopping spot in Paris?
I always love to go to Kiliwatch, the vintage store close to Rue Étienne Marcel. I always find something there.

Ready for Leather Weather? Meet Zana Bayne’s Bright Ideas for Spring ’16

zana bayne

Even if you don’t know Zana Bayne’s name, you probably know her work. The leather maven’s decidedly bondage-y designs—harnesses, chokers, skirts, bags, etc.—have been spotted on the likes of Debbie Harry, Zoë Kravitz, and Anja Rubik (who sports hers regularly with crisp white oxfords). And if an undeniably dark appeal has characterized Bayne’s designs in past, her tropically-tinged Spring ’16 lineup, dubbed Bossa Nova, brings a new side of the label’s aesthetic to the fore.

Taking cues from mod icons like Courrèges and Cardin, the designer introduced juicy pops of coral and raspberry leather alongside all her classic noir (whatever the hue, all pieces are made by hand in her New York studio). Graphic petal shapes inspired by her ’60s influences appear as one of Bayne’s signature lattice-like skirts—ideal for layering over a prim midi skirt—but also in the form of footwear. Both ankle- and knee-high styles mark a first step into shoes for the brand. And for the truly statement-making among us, look no further than the Side-Eye Hat: a quietly Surrealist, wide-brimmed number in jet-black leather with a generous peephole cut in the brim, perfect for a little shade in the sun—or throwing a little shade in the sun.

Yuri, Piero, Noma, and Erin: Meet the Boys Keeping Public School Cool

public school male models

Who says girls get to have all the fun during Fashion Week? Public School may have already displayed their streamlined menswear looks during the New York Fashion Week: Men’s collections, but that didn’t stop designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne from adding a select few male models to their lineup for Spring. Utilizing a mix of brand favorites like Yuri Pleskun and Noma Han—both of whom have been appearing on Public School’s runway since the label’s debut—and emerging talents like newcomers Piero Méndez and Erin Mommsen, Public School’s boys provided an appealing menswear moment. Get to know the guys who brought a touch of cool to Public School’s catwalk.

Yuri Pleskun
Known for his cooler-than-thou nonchalance and bright blue-green eyes, Bronx boy Yuri Pleskun has been one of the world’s top male models for the past few years. Discovered on the subway back in 2008, Pleskun quickly became a favorite of everyone from Marc Jacobs to Steven Meisel. With his buzz cut and tattoos, Pleskun was one of the guys who helped bring in the trend toward atypical male models, and as the former face of Public School’s advertising, he was a clear choice for the show.

Piero Méndez
Since his debut opening Prada’s Spring/Summer 2015 menswear show, Spanish newcomer Piero Méndez has become an in-demand figure on the male modeling scene. With his full lips and lush curls, Méndez possesses a romantic beauty, but at heart he’s a jock. Méndez excelled as an athlete—prior to modeling, he pursued a career as a professional soccer player. Their loss: These days he’s too busy fronting campaigns for Balenciaga and Calvin Klein to become the next Neymar. Instead he spends his time traveling the world and documenting each new trip on Instagram.

Erin Mommsen
Androgynous and elegant with a memorable name, Erin Mommsen has been building a name for himself working for labels like Opening Ceremony, Kenzo, and Y-3. A skateboarder and an artist, Mommsen prefers to share paintings and drawings on his social media rather than selfies. His look has won a few very famous fans: Kanye West tapped him for his first Adidas presentation, and Lily-Rose Depp recently posted his pic to Instagram with a telltale emoji.

Noma Han
Good looks and a winning personality are a rare combination, but Noma Han is in possession of both. Signed to his agency after his photographer roommate submitted his photos, Han has been steadily working for fashion’s best and brightest since 2010. Always ready with a joke or comic backstage selfie, Han is a regular at Billy Reid, Dries Van Noten, and Public School. When asked what makes his longstanding collaboration with Osborne and Chow work, Han’s response was fittingly tongue in cheek: “Every season I think to myself, ‘Maybe this time they won’t want to use me!’ ”

Meet Joe Wong, China’s Funniest Export

I have a particular fondness for comedians, and have had close personal friendships with some of the great ones over the years. Even as a teenager in the 1960s, my favorite reading material was not comic books, but rather biographies and autobiographies of comics– W.C Fields, Jack Benny, George Burns, Steve Allen, Groucho Marx, Red Skelton, Woody Allen, and many others, all of which I still have in my library. I also have maintained a collection of volumes of one-liners by Robert Orben, Joey Adams, and other comedy writers.

I want to introduce you to a comedian who I have never met, but with whom I have frequently communicated with since he first gained my attention about 5 years ago. Joe Wong is Chinese, and came from Beijing to the U.S. as a student in 1994. He ultimately obtained a PhD in Molecular Biology from Rice University in Houston– and he looks exactly like a guy who holds such a degree. In spite of this impressive accomplishment, he went into stand-up comedy, a decision I am sure thrilled his Chinese parents.

2015-08-29-1440823092-5375505-JoeWong.jpg

How he transformed himself from an egghead to a comic is remarkable. He went to a comedy club in Houston, where he understood nothing and loved everything about it. He joined Toastmasters International to help him with his English and public speaking. Later he moved to Boston to accept a job with a pharmaceutical firm and at night took a comedy class at a local high school. He read dictionaries, and honed his English and comedy. Eventually he qualified for the Boston Comedy Festival, and ultimately was spotted by David Letterman’s bookers.

Joe became a favorite of David Letterman and Ellen Degeneres, having made multiple appearances on both of their shows. He received a standing ovation at the White House Radio/Television Correspondence’s Dinner in 2010– a notoriously tough room.

He has a unique style, pace, delivery, look, and material. But, most importantly, he has something going for him that most comics wish they had– a stance. Like Jack Benny or Phyllis Diller, his comedic characteristics make him stand out from the crowd. He’s like a deer in the headlights, a bit surprised he’s in the spotlight, slightly reserved with a touch of socially awkwardness.

One of my favorite moments was after he finished his first national television appearance on The Late Show in 2009, Letterman approached him to shake his hand. Joe seemed unsure as to where to go or what was expected of him. It was a Wally Cox, Don Knotts, or Woody Allen moment, and the audience loved him for it.

One night I took a DVD of some of Joe’s television work to show my pal Phyllis Diller. We sat in her den watching, but Phyllis was both hard of hearing and had difficulty understanding foreign accents. After 5 minutes, Phyllis said to me “Is he speaking Chinese? I don’t understand a word he has said– but he is FUNNY!” Although she couldn’t figure out what he was saying, she did comprehend that his very essence was comical– a nerdy and nervous Chinese guy doing American style stand-up.

Ironically, Joe was discovered in and returned to China because of his U.S. television appearances. Over 50 million people in China have watched him on various internet sites, both in English and with Chinese subtitles. He was offered a gig hosting a comedy/investigative reporting show on a Chinese TV network CCTV2, and returned there to do so– with 5 to 7 million viewers per episode. In the meantime he is also performing American style standup comedy in Chinese venues and has garnered international attention, including being featured on the CBS Evening News and in the New York Times. He can perform 2 hour standup comedy shows in either English or Mandarin Chinese!

My friend, Emmy award-winning comedic actor Fred Willard, shares my passion for books on comedy and comedians, and we often exchange them with each other. He recently gave me Fred Allen’s 1954 book “Treadmill to Oblivion.” Fred Allen concludes his publication with this bittersweet observation, “When a radio comedian’s program is finally finished it slinks down Memory Lane into the limbo of yesterday’s happy hours. All the comedian has to show for his years of work and aggravation is the echo of forgotten laughter.”

I have a hunch Joe Wong’s best laughs are yet to come. It wouldn’t surprise me if he returns to the U.S. with his own sitcom that would be watched worldwide. Stay tuned.

Meet the Woman Behind Beyoncé’s Street Style Transformation

2015-08-21-1440178778-8853572-beyoncestreetstyleevolution2.jpg

by EDWARD BARSAMIAN

“She wears the crown for all the work that she’s put into the industry,” says Beyoncé’s personal wardrobe curator, Zerina Akers. “But I also want her to have fun. After all she is a woman.”

Over the past year, Akers has worked with the multiplatinum superstar analyzing the right cuts, fits, and silhouettes solidifying Queen Bey’s place in fashion royalty–one which the consummately best-dressed singer maintains through not only her own wardrobe, but a forthcoming partnership with Topshop, too. But there’s another, equally stylish side of the pop icon, and anyone who visits the 33-year-old’s Instagram or website will notice: Recently she has been upping her fashion game with seemingly impromptu shoots no matter where in the world she happens to be. We’ve also seen Bey sport some names outside the runway regulars including Harbison, Marco de Vincenzo, and Romeo Hunte–courtesy of Akers. “I really wanted to bring in some new designers, some younger kids to see what they’re doing,” Akers told us recently, adding, “and then incorporate more international designers and underground streetwear designers out of London.”

It’s been a masterful evolution for the singer who has lately taken to bold color, feminine prints, and punchy accessories. For the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Mrs. Carter slipped into a cardinal Harbison jumpsuit, while another occasion saw her opt for a tailored, canary yellow Zadig & Voltaire suit emphasizing the star’s renewed focus on rainbow-like shades. “I wanted to be a little more experimental with color,” says Akers, adding, “like the orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink Dsquared2 shorts. She’s such a bright person and I feel like in fashion today everyone strays away from color.”

However, one outfit that Akers references as a favorite was an all-cream look Beyoncé wore earlier this summer, which hinted at the shift in wardrobe that’s sophisticated and clean, but accessible: Pairing a topper from Barneys New York with Frame Denim jeans, her ensemble was a study in how to approach neutral dressing at all price points. “High-low is all about color selection, shape, and fabrication of the garment,” explains Akers. “I can get a skirt for $ 50 in matte jersey. It’s going to move and hug the body in a similar way as a skirt that’s $ 795.” Akers says the secret to her A-list client’s style comes down to the fit: She and Bey have been gravitating toward asymmetrical and bias cuts.

But the best part of her role, the stylist maintains, is being able see Beyoncé excited about the looks. “That’s the reward,” says Akers matter-of-factly. “That she’s enjoying herself and feels beautiful and confident.” How else, after all, to run the world?

Yes, Jeans Can Be Ladylike: Meet Tu Es Mon Trésor, the Prettiest Denim Around

jourdan dunn

Right now, customized denim is at an all-time “in-your-face” high. And this is not your hippie mother’s embroidery, usually falling into brash (and sometimes crass) styles of stick-and-poke illustrations on low-slung jeans and through-the-wringer thrashed and slashed pieces. But what about those who want to take part in the decorated denim boom sans the crude and rude genres? Take it from the Tu Es Mon Trésor (translation: “You Are My Treasure”)—a label that has Rihanna stepping out of her graffiti-inspired denim and into the romantic, polished pairs.

With delicately embellished jeans dotted with pearls, a bricolage of crystals splashed on the knees, or cuffs scattered with blossoms rendered in tulle, it’s clear that the label is embracing its feminine origins. Yes, John Wayne’s favorite textile really can be ladylike. The brainchild of Tokyo-based Miki Aizawa and Aimi Fukumoto, Tu Es Mon Trésor was the result of an inability to find jeans to go with a collection of Hermès and Chanel It bags. “I felt that [the bags] would not look good with a tweed jacket!” says Fukumoto. “I wanted to wear casual clothes like denim pants with them.” She launched the Japanese denim label soon after. “For a long time now, I have had an image of a girl living in the countryside hankering for big cities,” says Fukumoto of the inspiration behind her designs, which riff on bijoux and beyond. “When she goes to cities, she borrows a Burberry trench coat and an Hermès scarf from her mother’s closet in order to be as fashionable as possible.” And with these jeans, she won’t need much else.

The GOP Debate Class Will Meet at 5 PM

It was the “I get no respect” debate, featuring seven sad sack GOP presidential candidates who were relegated to the “Lower Tier Debate,” at 5 PM ET on Thursday.

These candidates had the lowest poll numbers– they were like the unpopular kids in high school. They were all dressed up, but no one invited them to the prom. I swear they all looked so humiliated and rejected that I felt sorry for them. None of them wanted to be there, but were required to attend– exactly how I felt in gym class.

Take a look at their sad little faces in this video when they are introduced by the substitute teachers. If this doesn’t tug at your heart strings, you don’t have one. I always have had a soft spot for the underdogs.

They had only 1 hour to make their pitch– although it seemed much longer. Again, as in high school, everyone was waiting for the final bell to ring so we could all go home.

I suppose if you wanted to put a positive spin on it, at least it was a Trump-free zone. The class bully got to play with the popular kids at 9 PM ET.

The highlight of this entire pity party was this exchange, where all (except Rick Perry), demonstrated that they had flunked math class.

MODERATOR BILL HEMMER: I need a two-word answer to the following query. In 2008, then-Senator Barack Obama described Hillary Clinton as, quote, “likable enough,” end quote. What two words would you use to describe the Democratic frontrunner? Governor Pataki to start.
PATAKI: Divisive and with no vision. No vision at all. (9 words)
FIORINA: Not trustworthy. No accomplishment. (4 words)
SANTORUM (Presumably; heard but not seen on camera): Secretive and untrustworthy. (3 words)
PERRY: Well, let’s go with three. Good at email. (3 words, but at least he stated he wanted the extra word.)
MODERATOR BILL HEMMER: Governor Jindal?
JINDAL: Socialist and government dependent. (4 words)
GRAHAM: Not the change we need at a time we need it. (11 words)
MODERATOR BILL HEMMER: Governor?
GILMORE: Professional politician that can’t be trusted. (6 words)

My two-word thoughts on this: Politicians can’t be brief, count, or follow instructions.

Meet Two Of The First Gay Dads To Foster-To-Adopt In Florida

In this installment of the Huffington Post Gay Voices RaiseAChild.US Let Love Define Family” series, contributing writer David Humiston is inspired by two foster and adoptive dads in Tallahassee, Florida, and shares their story.

Inspiration is a living thing. In the act of making ordinary people do extraordinary things, it gets passed on. Those inspired become those that inspire and, in this way, one candle is used to light another.

Couples like Daniel Nurse and his husband, Casanova, a thirtysomething couple from Tallahassee, Florida, are inspiring. Together since 2006 and married on Valentine’s Day of this year, Danny has taken on the Florida House Judiciary Committee (testimony against anti-gay adoption, i.e., Bill 7111), biased caseworkers and even an attorney who initially (and illegally) refused to represent them during adoption proceedings, and have successfully adopted three beautiful children into their loving home. The process was not easy for them, and they admit to moments of difficulty and even self-doubt. However, they persevered and can say that they were among the first same-sex couples to foster-to-adopt in Tallahassee. Daniel, already from a family familiar with the beautiful rewards of adoption, related to me that he was inspired to take his first steps by the annual CBS television special, “A Home for the Holidays.”

In 2010, Florida’s Third District Court of Appeals struck down a 1977 law banning adoption by gay parents, declaring it unconstitutional. Danny and Cas were among the very first to subsequently apply for fostering.

Their first adoption placement, a precious girl, was challenging. The family struggled to adapt and parent, as any family would, and the young girl placed in their care blossomed, but was ultimately reunited with her birth mother. The experience made them wiser, perhaps more patient, but no less eager to try again. And so they did, with two adorable and, as Danny says, “amazing” boys. Sadly though, neither child ended up staying with them for the long haul, but Danny and Cas remained positive and persistent.

Determination has paid off, and they have now successfully adopted three children through the foster-to-adopt program. Two boys, Neijal and Cameron — both 4 — and Ava Rose, who is only 22 months old. The children have brought more joy and meaning into Danny and Cas’s life.

Cas’s family, long apprehensive and unaccepting of his sexuality, have even been won over by the children, and family meetings have engendered deeper respect, love and understanding. Cas’s father, the children’s “Paw-Paw,” was instantly smitten upon meeting them and insisted on showing his love by cooking them a “hearty meal,” as Cas puts it. That meeting, and those that followed, were “critical in mending many years of misunderstanding and misperceptions about my husband’s life, and gay life in general,” says Cas.

Danny and Cas are happy. They are optimistic. They know that struggles are likely to come their way, but it is nothing they aren’t willing to face together. In Daniel’s words, they “may face issues, ridicule, embarrassment, but it is all worth it to be able to give back and provide a loving and committed family for those that would not otherwise have one.” This is a common theme among foster-to-adopt families, perhaps even more so among same-sex couples who have faced struggles for the opportunity to raise children. Nonetheless, this family is a heartening inspiration for all of us to reflect upon. Their candle of inspiration will, hopefully, be used to inspire the flame of other candles yet to be.
