Anthropause 2020: The year when humans shut down the planet. Lockdown in Los Angeles The photos you're about to see were taken during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020. What makes these images so unusual is how devoid of people they are. We Angelinos have never seen our city so empty. Los Angeles is one of the busiest cities in the world. A human ant hill. Crawling. Teeming with life. These photos were taken at busy places and on always crowded streets, that are suddenly deserted. It's an unprecedented moment in human history. For a brief moment, we were frozen in time. Human activity around the globe came to a grinding halt, while the world held its breath in fear. We all together shared a pivotal moment in human history: a moment that will be remembered for centuries, for its silence. It was the calm before the storm.

She Stoops to Conquer is a comedy by Irish author Oliver Goldsmith that was first performed in London in 1773. The play is a favourite for study by English literature and theatre classes in Britain and the United States. It is one of the few plays from the 18th century to have an enduring appeal, and is still regularly performed today. It has been adapted into a film several times, including in 1914 and 1923. Initially the play was titled Mistakes of a Night, and indeed, the events within the play take place in one long night. In 1778 John O'Keeffe wrote a loose sequel, Tony Lumpkin in Town. Wealthy countryman Mr. Hardcastle arranges for his daughter Kate to meet Charles Marlow, the son of a wealthy Londoner, hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately Marlow is nervous around upper-class women, yet the complete opposite around lower-class females. On his first acquaintance with Kate, the latter realises she will have to pretend to be common, or Marlow will not woo her.

Throughout his three-decade career as a founding member of and bassist for The Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman was known to the world as the "quiet one" in the band. Now, the famously private music legend speaks out about his extraordinary life and experiences as part of "the greatest rock and roll band in the world." Opening up his vast personal archive—a lifetime's worth of previously unseen home movies, photographs, and memorabilia—Wyman reflects on his early years with The Stones, the band's meteoric rise to fame, and his search for a sense of "normalcy" amidst the whirlwind of sex, drugs, and rebellion. Endearingly humble and down-to-earth, Wyman pulls back the curtain to offer a one-of-a-kind perspective on life as a reluctant rock star.

Oliver Peoples Fetes ‘California as We See It’ With Lisa Eisner

A clutch of bespectacled Angelenos joined luxury eyewear brand Oliver Peoples on Thursday to fete the launch of the Assouline tome “California as We See It.” Cohosted by photographer and Los Angeles style arbiter Lisa Eisner, who penned the book’s foreword, the party drew Shaun Ross, Levi Dylan, William Peltz, Stormi Henley, Markus Molinari, Brad Elterman, Lorenza Izzo, Ivan Olita and Tasya van Ree, along with Oliver Peoples chief executive officer Rocco Basilico and creative director Giampiero Tagliaferri.
“Do you remember their first shop?” asked Eisner of the Sunset Plaza store a few blocks down the street. “It was right in the middle of all this history — George Hurrell’s studio, Billy Haines’ showroom, Adrian’s shop. Then there were all the rock clubs like The Whiskey a Go Go and The Roxy.” She also pointed out the pioneering retailer Charles Gallay — the first boutique in the U.S. to carry Azzedine Alaïa — and the location used for the apartment of Richard Gere’s character in “American Gigolo.”
“That’s sort of the area in which we played, and when I bought my first pair of Oliver Peoples in the Eighties, we were like this clique,” she said. Eisner has also photographed several campaigns

The Row, Oliver Peoples Team on Second Eyewear Collection

SHADY BUSINESS: It’s The Row and Oliver Peoples round deux.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen’s sportswear brand has teamed with the luxury eyewear label on a follow-up range of sunglasses. Their first collection was released in 2015.
Both brands declined to comment on the designs, but provided a mood to speak for their aesthetic inclinations instead. The mix of pictures features Bob Dylan, Naomi Campbell and a heavy serving of the Nineties’ foremost icy blonde, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. A publicist for Calvin Klein during the brand’s Kate Moss era, Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist style was often punctuated with small, ovular sunglasses.
This seems the tipping point for the four-style collection of smaller-scale frames. There are two riffs on aviator styles made of wire, while acetate frames come in a sleek Wayfarer style and a mod rectangular shape. The collection is priced from $ 455 to $ 645 and will be released in Oliver Peoples stores this week.

Have Something Awful To Say? Scream Into The Void With John Oliver

An upcoming app called Peeple will allegedly allow users to rate everyone they know — sort of like a Yelp for reviewing human beings. Its founders say they want to “spread love and positivity.”

That claim has “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver wondering if they’ve ever been on the Internet.

“The Internet is a faucet that dispenses hate, racism and the occasional sad orgasm,” Oliver said on Sunday night’s show.

“The Internet essentially exists so people can say vicious things about each other,” Oliver said. “We don’t need another app to facilitate that. What we need is something which helps stop people from getting hurt.”

So Oliver and his team launched a website called Scream Into The Void, which allows people to write hateful things without consequences.

“You simply type whatever awful thing you’re thinking, hit the button at the bottom of the page and the message will be deleted forever,” Oliver said. “It’s brilliant.”

Unlike the Peeple app, which may be a hoax, the Void is here now… and it’s waiting for your screams. If you’ve got some awful thoughts to share, you can Scream Into The Void right here.

The Row, Oliver Peoples Link for Eyewear Collection

The Row and Oliver Peoples have linked up for a new eyewear collection that will debut during the clothing label’s Paris Fashion Week presentation.
The six styles, which will come in both optical and sunglass options, will be available in stores beginning in January. The collection will be labeled The Row x Oliver Peoples.
The frames are feminine reinterpretations of long-time Oliver Peoples designs, including the O’Malley style, which will be renamed O’Malley NYC and which marks the first time the Los Angeles-based eyewear company has allowed an outside designer to adopt the frame. The sunglass options all feature custom mineral-glass color lenses unique to The Row’s collection.
“Oliver Peoples is singularly focused on eyewear and in this sense they are experts in the category,” said Ashley Olsen, adding the tie-up will help the sisters’ brand move their eyewear to the next level.
“We felt optical was just as important as sun,” added Mary-Kate Olsen, who said that was why they chose to adapt the O’Malley style.
The frames, which range from $ 350 to $ 600 at retail, incorporate key Oliver Peoples signatures such as wire ridges and discreetly placed logo plaques.
“We sat down together at the beginning of this project with a very clear objective

Arrested? John Oliver Has A Warning You Have To Hear

You have a right to an attorney… but as John Oliver pointed out on Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” you don’t have a right to an attorney who actually has time for you.

Public defenders are so overworked that they often handle hundreds of cases — or in Fresno County, California, they handle up to 1,000 felony cases a year when state guidelines say they should only have 150.

And in New Orleans, some public defenders get an average of seven minutes to prepare a case.

“That is not long enough to prepare anything,” Oliver said. “If I only had seven minutes to prepare this show, I definitely would not be talking about public defenders right now. I’d be desperately trying to fill time by listing Muppets in order of fuckability.”

(Which he then proceeded to do… ranking Fozzie at #1.)

It’s so bad that New Orleans is turning to crowdfunding to make up its budget shortfall, Oliver said, and many states now even charge people for access to a public defender.

“We have a system where conceivably, if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you, provided that you pay that attorney, which is absurd,” Oliver said. “You can’t tell people something’s free and then charge them for it. This is the American judicial system — not Candy Crush.”

So what’s the answer? Maybe a new Miranda warning to be used on cop shows that are more reflective of reality.

Oliver drafted some of the stars of those shows to demonstrate that new warning. You can check it out in the clip above.

John Oliver Says It’s Time To End Discrimination Against Gays

John Oliver says it’s time for the federal government to finish the job when it comes to gay rights

Speaking on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver pointed out that while gay couples now have the right to get married, they don’t have many other rights in much of the nation.

In some cases, they have no rights at all.

Now Oliver is calling on the feds to extend basic civil rights protections to the gay community.

“States have a checkered history when it comes to civil rights,” Oliver said. “Just look at Arkansas right now. Not only do they not have any anti-discrimination ordinances, earlier this year they actually passed an anti-anti-discrimination ordinance that prevents any city or county from extending civil rights protections to gay people.”

As Oliver pointed out, that’s the opposite of progress.

“It would be like if Apple suddenly introduced the iPhone 7 and it was a flip phone,” he said. “That’s still not as dumb as the Apple Watch… but it’s dumb.”

Check it out in the clip above.

Bill Hudson Fires Back At Kids Oliver And Kate Hudson, Says They’re ‘Dead’ To Him

Bill Hudson, the estranged father of actors Oliver and Kate Hudson, is firing back after his son’s scathing Instagram post with a seething message of his own.

“I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own,” Hudson said in an interview with The Daily Mail.

“I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name,” he continued. “They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.”

The comments come in response to an Instagram post by Oliver Hudson that went viral. The photo, reportedly taken more than 30 years ago, featured the actor and his sister as kids with Bill, and was posted with the caption, “Happy abandonment day… @katehudson.”

Happy abandonment day… @katehudson

Hudson also slammed his ex-wife Goldie Hawn, who he says “poisoned” the kids against him, and expressed dismay at his daughter Kate’s Father’s Day post, which was a picture of her with Kurt Russell, Hawn’s longtime partner. The caption on the post read, “Pa, just simply….. Thank you Happy Fathers Day I love you to the moon and back.”

“It was an intimate shot and, as her father, I found it inappropriate and unsettling,” Hudson said. “I’ll leave it at that.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to representatives for Bill, Kate and Oliver Hudson and will update this post if and when a comment is received.

“The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that really should only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world,” Oliver said Sunday on “Last Week Tonight.”

After 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston last week, the U.S. and South Carolina flags flew at half staff over the state’s Capitol. But the nearby Confederate flag flew high, which led to a growing call that it should be removed.

Several Republican presidential candidates have said the decision to fly the Confederate flag should be left up to individual states. Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) said the flag represents the Civil War to some, but admits “it has been used in a racist way.”

Oliver agreed.

“I believe the first time the Confederate flag was used in a racist way was the exact second they finished sewing the very first one,” he said. “It was around that time.”

Oliver had some suggestions for what to do with the flag flying near the South Carolina Capitol, and every other Confederate flag. Check it out in the clip above.

John Oliver Wants You To Expose Chicken-F**king Congressmen

John Oliver has a message for lawmakers: It’s time to stand up for the rights of chicken farmers or forever be branded a “chicken fucker.”

On his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver shined a spotlight on the plight of the American chicken farmer. While chicken is one of the nation’s best-selling foods, the chicken farmers are getting paid, well, chickenfeed.

The segment explained how many of the farmers are poor because of “contract farming” practices in which they are responsible for all the expenses of running the farm, but the big poultry companies actually own the chickens — the one part of the business that makes money.

As a result, many chicken farmers are living below the poverty line. When confronted with that fact, an industry lobbyist tried to parse words.

“Which poverty line are you referring to? Is that a national poverty line? Is that a state poverty line?” National Chicken Council spokesman Tom Super asked in “Cock Fight,” a Fusion documentary.

“What the fuck are you talking about? It’s doesn’t matter!” Oliver said. “The poverty line is like the age of consent. If you find yourself parsing exactly where it is, you’ve probably already done something very, very wrong.”

Farmers who have spoken out say they faced retaliation from the powerful poultry industry. A measure forbidding retaliation against poultry farmer whistleblowers, backed by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), failed to pass the House Appropriations Committee.

Oliver blasted lawmakers on the committee by name with a list appearing on a screen behind him.

“If your representative’s name is up there, and they vote against Marcy Kaptur’s amendment, it is because they — and I cannot stress this enough — are chicken fuckers. They fuck chickens. That’s what they do, every day, every which way. And unless they want that chicken-fucker label to follow them for the rest of their lives, they might want to think extra carefully about which way they are going to vote, because chicken-fucker accusations do not come off a Wikipedia page easily. Or if they do, they tend to go right back up.”

Discover who the “potential chicken fuckers” are — and get a full explanation of contract farming — in the clip above. And keep an eye on those Wikipedia entries.
