Highs and Lows of First Paris Digital Couture Week

Paris taxi drivers usually know when it’s Paris Fashion Week.
Not this time, with participants in their homes or offices behind computer screens or hunched over their phones to discover creative films dedicated to the fall couture collections.
Said films ranged from rapid-fire teaser clips clocking in at less than a minute to Dior’s mega production, a 10-minute mythical movie directed by famed Italian director Matteo Garrone that was followed by five minutes of rolling credits.
Plenty of couture houses — even Chanel — kept it simple with films that mimicked fashion shoots or runway shows.
A word of caution to brands: When using the same model and the same music throughout, tedium can set in.
Other films resembled music videos, while a few went for disturbing drama scenes. Here, a selection of highlights and lowlights.
HIGHLIGHTS
Singer Mika is pitch-perfect as a retro newscaster offering deadpan commentary on Viktor & Rolf’s collection. His description of a spiky coat, part of a gloom-and-doom segment? “There’s a lot to feel angry about and this garment will communicate exactly that,” he intones.

Bouchra Jarrar kept everything close to home, filming twin sisters frolicking in her Paris apartment, where she produced many prototypes herself. Her models also ventured out to a

Naomi Campbell opened Paris Couture Week with a video address dedicated to the “fight for equality and diversity.”
“This is a call for action we are making,” she said, wearing sleeveless T-shirt bearing the words PHENOMENALLY BLACK.
Seated on a cream-colored sofa in a gilded room, a crystal chandelier behind her head, Campbell quoted Nelson Mandela and the Black Lives Matter movement.
“It is up to us, it is up to you to start enforcing inclusion of the multitude of identities that compose our countries,” she said. “The time has come to build a more equitable industry with a good form of checks and balances.
“It is now more than ever compulsory to include them in a permanent way, and not a transient one,” she added.

François Pinault Delays Opening of Paris Museum Until 2021

ART ON HOLD: Billionaire François Pinault has decided to push back the opening of his Bourse de Commerce art museum until spring 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The historical building, renovated by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, was originally due to be unveiled in June after several years of renovations. It was completed on March 9 and workers were busy putting the final touches to the venue when France entered its lockdown on March 17.
“Following the announcement of the continuation of the confinement linked to the health crisis and given the uncertainty over when activity can resume, the work necessary for the completion of the Bourse de Commerce cannot be carried out according to the planned schedule,” the Fondation Pinault said in a statement on Friday.
The City of Paris was in the process of completing construction work outside the building. Initially expected to last three months, this phase will now take an estimated eight or nine months due to the social distancing rules that are likely to remain in place once the lockdown is lifted, the institution explained.
The 150,000-square-foot building is in the center of Paris near the newly refurbished Forum des Halles shopping center, and in a neighborhood that

Andreas Aresti Debuts New Brand Lourdes in Paris

FASHION HOLOGRAMS: Guests treaded carefully upon arriving at the Lourdes presentation on Wednesday: the floor at the entrance of the Dragons Elysées restaurant was a pane of glass atop an aquarium.
That wasn’t the only quirky detail that evening. Instead of racks of clothing or even a photo installation, designer Andreas Aresti decided to show his debut women’s wear collection on holographic screens.
While his name might not ring a bell, Aresti is behind some of the buzziest fashion brands around: he started at 17 years old at Gypsy Sport, then went on to design for Tim Coppens, Kanye West and Stefano Pilati for the launch of Random Identities. The designer is now working on the relaunch of Hood By Air alongside Shayne Oliver.
“My aesthetic is an accumulation of all of these experiences,” said Aresti, who is now 26 years old.
Named after his mother, Lourdes is a brand offering clothes that are easy to wear: multi-pocket jeans, silk dresses, leather pieces and a skirt created out of an upside down ribbed cotton tank top, a nod to Aresti’s personal style – he confessed to wearing one everyday.
The color palette — earthy tones of brown, black, beige and hints of blue — was

Kilian Hennessy Hosts Paris Lipstick Bash

Champagne flowed at Lapérouse restaurant in Paris on Thursday night as Kilian Hennessy and guests celebrated additions to his brand’s Le Rouge Parfum collection of scented lipsticks.
Ellen von Unwerth lensed the campaign for the 10 new shades, coming in satin and in matte textures.
“The colors are super intense and stay a longtime on your lips,” she said. “Also, when you put them on, you actually want to eat them, because the smell is so lovely.”
Von Unwerth, who is working on a new issue of her Von magazine and has her photography exhibition “Devotion! 30 Years of Photographing Women” running at Fotografiska New York, said she has a soft spot for lipsticks that either enhance her natural lip color “or are red — Coca-Cola red.”

Moore From L.A.: At Paris Fashion Week, Air Kissing Is Out, Hand Sanitizer In

The LVMH Prize cocktail party is the latest cancellation at a Paris Fashion Week gripped with anxiety over coronavirus, where bottles of hand sanitizer, not perfume, were door gifts at the Paco Rabanne show held Thursday at the Conciergerie, the historic French Revolution-era site that’s certainly seen more head-spinning disasters.
The invisible menace hasn’t emptied the lunch crowd at L’Avenue, or cleared Caviar Kaspia (“We are fully booked every night with a huge waiting list,” reports chief executive officer Ramon Mac-Crohon.) And it didn’t keep Rachel Brosnahan, Demi Moore and Sigourney Weaver from the front row at Dior, Usher from Rick Owens or Carla Bruni and Tyga (what a pair) from coming to Off-White.
But it has created new rules of engagement, as the most social creatures on earth adjust to the “social distancing” being recommended by medical professionals to prevent the spread of the virus.
Air kissing is out, the arm squeeze is in, and every greeting (at fashion week, there are so, so many) is fraught with awkwardness as people gauge their coronavirus comfort level. “Wait, did you just come from Milan?” joked Anthony Vaccarello, kissing Vogue editor Mark Holgate on each cheek backstage after the Saint Laurent show. “No!” Holgate

Kenneth Ize Steps Up With Paris Fashion Week Debut

PARIS — This time last year, Kenneth Ize was preparing to showcase his work in Paris as one of the semifinalists of the LVMH Prize for Young Designers. Twelve months on, he’s gearing up for his first runway show in the French capital, to be held on the opening day of Paris Fashion Week.
“I wasn’t expecting this to come that soon, so it’s just an amazing journey,” marveled the Nigerian designer, who made it to the finals of the LVMH Prize. Though he didn’t leave with an award, the connections he made in Paris have opened many doors, with Ize’s retail network doubling to 18 stores for the spring 2020 season.
Having shown at Arise Fashion Week last April, he’s ready to bring his gender-fluid collection to a bigger stage, with the support of Naomi Campbell, who co-owns the fashion week held in Lagos. The British model is expected at the Paris show, to be held at the Palais de Tokyo on Feb. 24, though whether she will model for Ize again, or sit in the front row, is undecided.
“I just need to grow this brand and I need to open it to investors,” Ize said of his decision to show in

Enfants Riches Déprimés Chooses Paris for First Store

BONJOUR PARIS: Los Angeles-based ready-to-wear label Enfants Riches Déprimés has chosen Paris for its first flagship.
Founded in 2012 by artist and designer Henri Alexander Levy, the brand picked a former jeweler’s atelier on the Rue Charlot in the Marais for its first brick-and-mortar space.
Working with architect Didier Faustino, the 164-square-foot boutique was designed to mirror a Twenties’ bank vault. The walls of the two floors, one on ground level and one below, were covered with stainless-steel plaques that catch the light coming in through the old-school Parisian storefront. Slabs of dark marble were used to create countertops, on which jewelry and accessories will be presented, as well as the staircase winding down toward the lower level.
Downstairs, in a room covered with wall-to-wall steel panels, a lime carpet added a touch of color, matching the Pierre Paulin ABCD sofa picked by Levy to decorate the space, which has steel racks subtly blending into the walls.

Ecologist Demonstrators Occupy Paris Mall

PARIS MALL MOVEMENT: Hundreds of demonstrators, largely comprised of members of the ecological movement Extinction Rebellion (or XR), staged a sit-in from Saturday to Sunday in the Italie 2 commercial center of Paris.
The demonstrators, which also included some members of the gilets jaunes (or yellow vest) movement, among others, chose the location that is home to 130 stores and restaurants in the French capital’s southeastern section as a symbol of consumerism.
According to Extinction Rebellion, a thousand demonstrators entered the mall on Saturday and left on Sunday at 4 a.m.
Police were called to the scene.
The sit-in marked the start of a larger effort by Extinction Rebellion, which plans a series of protests around the world starting on Monday.
The group’s web site says: “To governments around the world, we declared a climate and ecological emergency. You did not do enough. To everybody else, rebel. 10 a.m., Oct. 7th, 60 cities worldwide. See you on the streets.”
This weekend’s protest came two weeks after the climate march in Paris took place and spiraled into violence after being infiltrated by anarchist demonstrators.

Moore From L.A.: In Paris, Everyday Grandeur Reigns and Green Is the New Black

It wasn’t the Chanel runway crasher, the Rick Owens bubble makers or Mr. Funkadelic himself, George Clinton, at Sacai that stuck with me most this week (though all were awesome). It was a quaint scene on the balcony of an apartment building across from the Valentino show, where a couple had set out a white tablecloth and wine to watch the runway feast.
They just wanted to catch a glimpse of the grandeur (some of their balcony neighbors even had binoculars in hand). And grandeur is the word that comes to mind for the season; Paris wouldn’t be Paris without it. And neither would fashion, no matter how comfortable are jeans, leggings and sneakers.
It could be nostalgia for a going, going…and bygone era — pre-impeachment, pre-yellow vests and pre-revolution. But it seems more like a calculation by designers that they had to go big, even with ready-to-wear, or go home. Which could also explain the crazy number of looks in some runway collections, including Dior and Balmain. (Who can take it all in? And what kind of a sustainable message is that?)
Certainly there was lots of couture-like fantasy — in the lush, trailing coats and billowing skirts by Christian Lacroix, welcomed

L’Oréal Paris Hosts Third Fashion Show

L’Oréal Paris’ third fashion show, held Saturday evening at the majestic Paris Mint, began with a drumroll. Six-hundred guests, with Naomi Campbell, Olga Kurylenko and Louise Bourgoin sitting in the front row, waited for 32 of the brand’s ambassadors to make their entrances on the circular stage.
Helen Mirren, Andie MacDowell and Eva Longoria were among the star-studded cast taking part in the show, which was set to original music performed live by a 40-piece orchestra. But before that began, the women shared with WWD their thoughts on sustainability.
Mirren, walking for L’Oréal Paris for the second time, was scared of tripping over her dress, as was Amber Heard, a first-timer. “I’m terrified of falling down,” revealed Mirren, whose recent projects include HBO’s “Catherine the Great” and “The Good Liar.” “I’m wearing this gorgeous Giambattista Valli dress. It’s very, very floaty — lots of stuff to get tangled in and fall over.”
Mirren drew parallels between runway and stage work. “It is theater,” she said. “I’m a theater girl. I want to be on stage.”
Mirren loves the backstage fashion-show experience. “It’s all chaos, and yet somehow they make sense of it, and then you line up and they go ‘OK, go,’” she said.

Karlie Kloss, Alicia Silverstone Front Row at Christian Siriano’s First Paris Runway Show

So nice, he did it twice.
New York designer Christian Siriano held an encore presentation of his spring 2020 collection in Paris on Wednesday, with a few famous faces in the front row, including his “Project Runway” co-star Karlie Kloss, and actress Alicia Silverstone.
Silverstone, who will next star in “The Baby-Sitter’s Club” revival, said she’s been friends with the designer for a while, and that they are travel buddies.
“I met him about four years ago. He asked me to come to a show and I hadn’t been to a fashion show since the one I had been in for Yves Saint Laurent when I was 8! The reason I went is he didn’t use fur, he didn’t use wool, and this was reason enough for me to show up. I felt so beautiful in the clothes, and he became a dear friend.”
The Paris show was the perfect excuse for a trip, she said. “He’s such a talent. I’m a huge fan of his work, and I’m so inspired by how he creates. I love everything he puts me in, and I also lie on top of him on planes.”

EXCLUSIVE: Karl Lagerfeld to Introduce Makeup With L’Oréal Paris

Karl Lagerfeld had a great appreciation for makeup, using eye shadow to hand-color his dreamy fashion illustrations. The late designer was also famous for conceiving entire fashion collections in his sleep — up to and including the beauty look.
Among the many projects he had initiated before his passing in February was a makeup range in collaboration with L’Oréal Paris that channeled his “rock-chic style, fused with a sense of Parisian elegance,” according to the partners.
“This line of makeup truly reflects the Karl Lagerfeld brand universe and what Karl loved in makeup,” said Caroline Lebar, head of image and communication at the Karl Lagerfeld fashion house.
She lauded the inclusive “beauty for all” ethos of L’Oréal Paris, noting, “Karl liked it when a collaboration resonated with a brand and would make a real impact on many people.”
The one-off collection is to be revealed for online sales on Sept. 20 with a global release on Sept. 27 during Paris Fashion Week.
L’Oréal and Lagerfeld are keeping product particulars and pricing under wraps, but said the range would be created with the beauty firm’s “scientific dedication and color expertise.”
The partners also trumpeted their shared “pioneering spirit and commitment to celebrating feminine power, with a relentless

Christian Louboutin Plots Paris Exhibition

When Christian Louboutin was growing up in Paris, heels were not allowed at the Palais de la Porte Dorée, an Art Deco gem dedicated to African and Asian arts.
Sweet revenge comes in February 2020, when the museum, whose partial restoration was funded by the luxury shoemaker, will house an exhibition devoted to Louboutin’s creativity and his diverse aesthetic passions.
“It’s an open window to my brain,” was how Louboutin summed up the vast showcase, where more than 200 pairs of shoes will be sprinkled among an eclectic mix of art works, furnishings, installations, performance pieces and some fashion items, including crosses and crowns. “The heel is back in the museum in full force, only it’s not only an exhibition of high heels. We have flat shoes, too.”
The delicate mosaics and parquet floors are what compelled the museum to ban spindly footwear back in the day. And its ornamental splendor is what sparked Louboutin’s passion for decorative arts, which would become a key source of inspiration for the future designer.
In an interview on Thursday, Louboutin recalled being awed by the tall doors sheltering one of the museum’s sumptuous salons, its door handles made of jutting horns that evoked the wonder of Africa.

Paris When It Sizzles: Men’s Designers Join the Juggernaut

PARIS — There’s something about Paris, what with six packed days of men’s shows starting today, the calendar bulging with 10 more official shows and reflecting a United Nations of diverse fashion talent.
“Paris is the center of the fashion industry. It’s the pinnacle of luxury and a hub of creativity,” enthused Spencer Phipps, a San Francisco native showing at the Cite Internationale des Arts Tuesday. “Starting a business here as an American, it pushes us to innovate and puts the way people view the brand in a different context.”
Hed Mayner, based in Tel Aviv, said he chose Paris as his platform partly because he happened to live in the French capital shortly after his studies in Jerusalem, and found the team that puts together his namesake label. “Besides this, we wanted to get closer to the hub of the fashion world, which will provide us with the opportunity to increase our knowledge, and network with industry leaders and creative minds,” he added.
With men’s weeks in other capitals withering, young designers are attracted to the creative energy in Paris, and the opportunity to capture not only attention, but business, given the concentration of press, influencers and buyers congregating this week. About

Chanel’s Métiers d’Art Show Is Coming Back to Paris

HOMECOMING: There’s no place like home, according to Chanel.
Chanel’s next Métiers d’Art collection will be shown in Paris on Dec. 5, according to a statement issued by the house. The exact location is yet to be revealed.
The Métiers d’Art 2019-2020 collection will be the first designed exclusively by Virginie Viard, Karl Lagerfeld’s longtime right hand, who took over creative direction of the house following the designer’s death in February.
The collection traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for New York for Chanel Métiers d’Art 2018-2019 and Lagerfeld’s native Hamburg, Germany, in 2017. The Métiers d’Art collection hadn’t been presented in France since the Paris-Cosmopolite collection at the Ritz in 2016, in honor of the luxury hotel’s reopening.
Lagerfeld introduced this pre-fall ready-to-wear collection — embellished with the specialty couture ateliers Chanel owns — in 2002. Previous destinations for the Métiers d’Art show include Edinburgh, Scotland; Shanghai; Rome; and Dallas.
The announcement comes as Chanel is strengthening its bond with the French capital. In February 2018, the house signed on as the exclusive private sponsor of the renovation of the Grand Palais with plans to pledge 25 million euros toward the works, which are due to be completed in time for the Summer Olympics in

Sies Marjan Expected to Show Men’s in Paris

Count Sies Marjan as the latest brand to make the jump from New York to Paris.
Sources said the buzzy New York-based brand will hold its first men’s-only show in June during Paris Fashion Week. The company declined to comment but an announcement is expected next week.

The label, designed by Sander Lak, a former head of design for Dries Van Noten, has historically shown men’s looks during his women’s show in New York, but a more-intense focus on its men’s collection has prompted the company to opt for the Paris runway where many of the higher-profile brands show.

Sies Marjan launched as a luxury women’s label in 2016 in New York. Lak, a Dutch native, debuted his first full men’s line for fall 2018.
Before spending five years at Dries Van Noten, Lak, a graduate of Central Saint Martins, worked at Balmain in Paris and Phillip Lim in New York. His Sies Marjan brand is known for its use of color, proportion and innovative materials.

The Paris Agreement Climate Change Goals Can’t Be Met Unless Fashion Does Better

OUT OF TIME: Despite all the noise — and the genuine changes being made — the fashion industry is losing its enthusiasm for tackling climate change, according to the latest report released by Global Fashion Agenda and Boston Consulting Group.
Industry progress has slowed by a third in the past year. The industry as a whole was awarded just four points in the GFA’s Pulse Score, a baseline score for measuring and tracking sustainability targets of the global fashion industry, compared with the six points awarded in 2018.
The report revealed that since the industry is a net contributor to climate change, the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, as stated in the Paris Agreement, will not be met unless improvements can be made.
“These latest findings emphasize the dire need for the whole industry to join the race and accelerate change now,” said Morten Lehmann, chief sustainability officer at Global Fashion Agenda, the organization that stages Copenhagen Fashion Summit, which is set for later this month.
The report also uncovered that 40 percent of the industry is not able to move into phase two of the Pulse Curve, a five-phase trajectory charting the industry’s social and environmental performance. Phase two

Chainmail Is a Trend Happening at Paris Fashion Week

As many stay tuned to Paris Fashion Week, an unlikely fashion trend has popped up among the Parisian street-style set: chainmail.
The 12th-century armor, originally a mesh made up of metal rings to protect the head and body, has been reimagined by many Paris showgoers, who are wearing the style in silver, gold and black as clothing, headwear and handbags.
Giving a nod to the medieval chainmail style, two showgoers were seen wearing the style as headwear, one with a black chain-link headpiece worn over a metallic silver headscarf and another wearing a silver chain-link headpiece with a matching handbag.

Others went with more of a disco theme. Designer Michelle Elie wore a silver metallic sequined dress with a matching bag, while another paired a metallic gold chain-link top with a matching gold sequined skirt.

Over the decades, the style has been a runway staple, most notably by Paco Rabanne, who made it his signature style in the Sixties. Most recently, the look was interpreted for fall by designers including Christian Siriano, who gave models ponytails tied together with links of chainmail; Area, which accented clothing with colorful

Leonard Paris RTW Fall 2019

Heritage can be stifling. How far can Leonard’s signature printed silk motifs actually go? Since her nomination as creative director of the house in March 2016, Christine Phung has been striving to take the brand’s identity to new heights. Sometimes her modern take works; at others it feels constrained.
The fall 2019 collection was the latter. Themed around a plane trip to Jaipur, India, the show was accessed thanks to boarding passes. Silk eye masks were laid out on seats, while on the runway models rolled Tumi suitcases, held printed neck pillows and one even wore a safety jacket. These were fun gimmicks, but they couldn’t distract from the busy prints that were splashed over total looks: in dominant tones of pink, orange, blue and purple, long silk dresses, fluid jackets, shirts, short kimonos and caftans were covered in garish orchid motifs. Most silhouettes were barely more than holiday dresses for heiresses; others looked like stewardesses from a particularly flashy airline company.
Gold lamé touches on the three black silhouettes were more convincing, taking the prints straight to evening wear. Phung played with nuances: printed silk details were ingeniously placed around wrists and belt linings on wool coats and pinstriped suits, while

Women’s Ready-to-Wear Season in Paris: The Scene

There’s never a dull moment in the City of Light. Here, a smattering of ideas of what to do between fashion shows.
GENERATION US: Two new stores, run by former Colette employees, have emerged on the northern tip of the Rue Cambon in Paris following a broad reshuffling of retail space in the tony neighborhood. Adding a sheen of Colette-cool to the luxury stronghold, the stores offer a range of streetwear, watches, sneakers and magazines from a wide swath of brands.

Inside the new Nous store.

The five-strong team behind Nous includes Olivier Breton, Marvin Dein, Enson Malbranche, Tarek Amoura and Sylvain Brondel. “After the closing of Colette, it was normal to continue our momentum, build our own project with the know-how and contacts we built up over so many years,” said Dein, who spent five of his 10 years at Colette buying sneakers.

EXCLUSIVE: Balmain Paris Flagship Opens Doors

PARIS — The doors of Balmain’s new Paris flagship officially swing open today, cementing the template introduced in the house’s recently opened Milan flagship for a new brick-and-mortar concept for the company.
A select group of editors got a preview of the store, located on Rue Saint-Honoré, one of Paris’ hottest and most exclusive retail arteries, for the staging of the house’s inaugural couture show under creative director Olivier Rousteing in January, held on the site’s ground floor. A cocktail party is planned for the day of the house’s ready-to-wear show on March 1.
Designed by Rousteing in collaboration with Studio AMV’s Anna Philippou, Marie-Charlotte Prosperi-Fouchard and Victoire Guerlay, the two-story boutique — the brand’s largest store, measuring a total of 6,845 square feet — was conceived as a series of rooms.
Channeling a Parisian apartment, it opens with a library-inspired space featuring a parquet floor, towering mirrored columns and marble shelves stocked with women’s bags. A small passage themed around a game room with a custom-made chandelier and game-table-inspired merchandising unit housing small accessories is flanked by a safe wall with jewelry displays. Bridget Foley’s Diary: To Paris We Must Go

Taking to the runway for fall isn’t necessary. Taking the collection to Paris to sell absolutely is.
That’s the current mind-set at Monse, as for the second consecutive fall season the brand will forego a formal show. Instead, designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia have enlisted Kristian Schuller to shoot their look book, which will feature Amanda Murphy, and the brand will hold showroom appointments in New York and Paris.
While the designers remain undecided about whether to opt off the runway for spring as well, in something of a paradigm shift they will definitely stage a formal show for resort 2020.
At a time when brands increasingly opt to go their own way when it comes to presenting their collections, the Monse designers and chief executive officer Renee Prince Fillip thought long and hard about the traditional schedule vis-à-vis the realities of their business. Their no-show decision for fall took into consideration the complications of staging two shows in a single season, as Kim and Garcia have done most seasons since taking over the creative helm at Oscar de la Renta. An even bigger consideration: the frustrating reality of fall markdowns. They determined that the scale of the fall business doesn’t justify the

Homme Plissé Issey Miyake to Hold First Presentation in Paris

NEW PLEATS: Homme Plissé Issey Miyake, a men’s line from the Japanese designer, is holding its first presentation in Paris on Jan. 17.
Choreographed by Daniel Ezralow, the artistic presentation will take place at the Pompidou Center at 9 p.m., following the Issey Miyake show earlier in the day at 11 a.m. in the Palais de Tokyo. Ezralow choreographed a presentation for Homme Plissé Issey Miyake featuring the men’s gymnastics team of Aomori University in 2013. The Pompidou Center presentation will take place in same space as a recent exhibit on Japanese architect Tadao Ando, a large room with windows lining one side.
Homme Plissé Issey Miyake was established in 2013 as a masculine counterpart to Pleats Please, which was launched two decades prior. The clothing is meant to be light and comfortable, with uniform pleats to keep fabric from sticking too close to the skin.
Designed by Miyake and his teams, pieces to be featured in the presentation are part of the fall winter 2019 collection, with most of the items pleated after being cut and sewn. The line has been growing with an offer ranging from ath-leisure and casual style clothing to suits.
In another recent Paris performance, Issey Miyake opened the

La Prestic Ouiston Expands With Plans for Store in Paris

A NEW FLAME: Rounding out a globetrotting tour of pop-up stores, La Prestic Ouiston is opening its first boutique in the Saint Germain district of Paris and launching an e-commerce site at the start of next year.
Nearly a decade old, the upscale Parisian label best known for original prints and fluid silhouettes, has recently experienced a surge of interest abroad, where it is sold in places including Fivestory in New York, Ron Herman in Los Angeles and Japan, Hanwha Galleria in Seoul, and soon on Matchesfashion.com.
For the label’s designer Laurence Mahéo, opening a Paris store will offer the chance to return to her design roots with one-off items. Self-taught, the designer was exposed to textiles growing up—her grandparents ran a high-end fabric store in France—and, as an adult, started selling clothing at Le Bon Marché in small batches of one-off pieces. Mahéo branched out into collections at the suggestion of the Left Bank institution’s Régine Bérault.
“I didn’t realize I was building a brand—I was making clothing,” recalled Mahéo.
“I still have a hard time realizing that it has become a French label with a certain notoriety…I feel like I have spent 10 years working like crazy and, suddenly, lifting my head

Alexander McQueen Missing From Paris Men’s Week

SHOW BUSINESS: Big acts missing from the official schedule of Paris Men’s Week in January will include Alexander McQueen. The house plans to switch to a series of intimate events as its new presentation format, WWD has learned. The first will take place in London in May for the fall 2019 season. “Intrinsically connected to the bespoke tailoring heritage of Alexander McQueen men’s wear, these events will be central to the evolution of the house’s commitment to the championing of creativity, craftsmanship and innovation,” the brand said. The house moved to showing in Paris in June 2017 after having shown by appointment in Milan and London in previous seasons.
As expected, Lanvin, which recently parted ways with its men’s creative director Lucas Ossendrijver, is also missing from the lineup, according to the Chambre Syndicale which released its provisional schedule for the week on Friday.
Maison Margiela will also sit out the Paris men’s shows this season as it undergoes a strategic review under chief executive officer Riccardo Bellini, who joined the company in March. The house is believed to be aligning its men’s ready-to-wear collection more closely with its women’s line and Artisanal couture collection. Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano oversees

Is Tommy Headed to Paris to Show?

FRENCH FLAG: Tommy Hilfiger is said to be eyeing Paris for his February “see-now-buy now” show. It is understood that the Chambre Syndicale, the organizer of the official fashion week, won’t make its decision until the end of this month if the designer can join its official calendar.
Hilfiger is reportedly looking to show his Tommy x Zendaya capsule collection in Paris as part of his see-now-buy-now extravaganzas. His globe-trotting shows, which have catapulted the brand’s social media engagement, have taken place in New York, Los Angeles, London and Milan.
Meanwhile, word has it that Hilfiger has already decided to return to his hometown in September and is considering the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
A spokeswoman for Hilfiger declined to comment on both the February and September events.
It was reported earlier this month that Ralph Lauren was entertaining the idea of showing in Paris in February, but a Ralph Lauren spokesman said Thursday the designer has decided against that idea. He plans to show in New York, although further details weren’t available.

The Academy Award-nominated A CAT IN PARIS is a beautifully hand-drawn caper set in the shadow-drenched alleyways of Paris. Dino is a cat that leads a double life. By day he lives with Zoë, a little girl whose mother is a detective in the Parisian police force. But at night Dino sneaks out the window to work with Nico–a slinky cat burglar with a big heart, whose fluid movements are poetry in motion as he evades captors and slips and swishes from rooftop to rooftop across the Paris skyline. EXCLUSIVE: Givenchy to Return to Paris Men’s Wear Calendar in January

DIFFERENT STROKES: At least one major brand is battling the tide of coed shows.
After switching to joint women’s and men’s displays following the arrival of Clare Waight Keller as artistic director in 2017, Givenchy has decided to switch back to the men’s wear fashion calendar for the fall 2019 season, WWD has learned.
The French fashion house will stage a presentation on Jan. 16 during Paris Men’s Fashion Week, before returning to the runway in June, it said in a statement.
Waight Keller, whose coed spring collection was inspired by the gender-fluid style of Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach, will continue to show women and men side by side in her ready-to-wear and haute couture shows, the brand said. Her campaigns for the house have portrayed both genders in mirror-image pairs.
“Granting men’s wear a dedicated platform starting from January reflects the house’s support of Clare Waight Keller’s vision for the brand,” Givenchy said.
The move comes at a time when a growing number of brands are opting to present women’s and men’s wear at the same time. Celine and Maison Margiela staged their first coed shows this season, while brands including Stella McCartney, Balenciaga, Haider Ackermann and Sonia Rykiel featured models of both sexes

Sotheby’s Paris Preps Fourth Auction of Books From Pierre Bergé’s Personal Library

BERGE’S BOOKENDS: If reading is the key to enlightenment, Pierre Bergé sure had a lot of books to spark his intelligence.
Sotheby’s Paris will hold the fourth auction for a selection of books from Bergé’s personal collection on Dec. 14. Several choice lots are on view at Sotheby’s New York office through Saturday, and they illustrated the myriad interests of the late French business titan: botany, gardens, philosophy, activism and more. The upcoming auction is expected to drum up between 5 million euros and 6 million euros, according to a Sotheby’s spokeswoman.
Literature, the 19th century and music were among the areas of interest covered in prior sales, with the first auction having been held nearly three years ago.
The December sale includes such highlights as Bartholomeus Anglicus’ “Le Propriétaire des choses,” circa 1486. This complete copy of a major medieval encyclopedia is illustrated with 19 large woodcuts, all hand-colored at that time. Bidders will also find Gustave Flaubert’s “Salammbô” from 1863, a first edition that was inscribed by Flaubert to the composer Hector Berlioz.
Another reading relic is Leonhart Fuchs’ “De historia stirpium commentarii insignes” from 1542 that is considered to be the founding treatise of modern botany. The auction house will also

Paris Opera Ballet Kickstarts Season With Audience Participation

YOU CAN DANCE: Audience participation is not usually part of the deal when you go to the ballet, but the opening gala of the season at the Paris Opera set out to shake up traditions.
Guests were invited to join the Paris Opera Ballet on stage at the ornate Palais Garnier, where they were led by dancers to perform a waltz. In their colorful evening dresses, the untrained participants stood out from the sea of tuxedo-clad dancers.
“We weren’t given any indications whatsoever,” said music producer Pedro Winter, who was the only male picked to go on stage. “The dancers guided me through touch and by maintaining constant eye contact. It turned out to be pretty instinctive in the end. You just let go.”
It was all part of Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin’s “Decadanse,” an electrifying performance featuring 31 dancers. The first act, an energetic group choreography to the tune of Goldfrapp’s “Black Cherry,” gave an indication of the unusual evening to come.
Russian prima ballerina Diana Vishneva and Aurélie Dupont earned rapturous applause for their “Boléro” pas de deux, wearing black asymmetrical costumes designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. Dupont, who retired from dancing in 2015, succeeded Benjamin Millepied as director of the

Cardi B Gets Her Morning Face On at the Mugler Show in Paris

EARLY BIRD: Despite giving one of her first live performances since the birth of her daughter Kulture, Cardi B was among the guests filing into the 10 a.m. Mugler show in Paris on Wednesday.
The “Bodak Yellow” rapper posed for photographers in a tailored black jacket that was cut open in the back to reveal sheer cycling shorts with lacing details — as well as a glimpse of her black thong. She was up at 6 a.m. getting her makeup done for the show.
“It was really hard for me to get up this morning because, you know, the time difference — I’m still in an America time frame in my head — so I was like, ‘Oh, man!’ But you gotta do it. Gotta work!” she said with a bright smile.

Marques’ Almeida to Show in Paris

JEAN GENIES: London’s Marques’ Almeida is heading to Paris Fashion Week, according to a statement released Monday, though the details are still being finalized.
Launched in 2011 by London-based Portuguese duo Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida, and propelled by the success of its signature Nineties-inspired frayed denim pieces, the growing label scooped the LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize in 2015, offering a 300,000-euro cash boost, a year of coaching and global exposure.
As reported, new arrivals to the Paris schedule include Afterhomework, A.W.A.K.E., Ottolinger and designer Anton Belinskiy.
The week is set to kick off a day earlier than usual on Sept. 24, with Simon Porte Jacquemus — who last year started showing his collection on the eve of the official start of the week — being joined by heavy hitters Dior and Gucci, the latter defecting exceptionally from Milan for one season.
Among other expected highlights are Hedi Slimane’s first collection for women and men at Céline, scheduled for Sept. 28 at 8:30 p.m. — the late Friday time slot marking a pronounced change from his predecessor Phoebe Philo, who habitually showed in an early afternoon slot on Sunday.

Thieves Target Audemars Piguet in Paris

STEALING TIME: Two armed thieves made off with luxury watches estimated to be worth around 1 million euros from a boutique owned by Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet in central Paris, steps away from the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, on Saturday afternoon.
It is the latest jewelry heist to strike the French capital.
Authorities are searching for two individuals who left the store located at 46 Rue de Pierre Charonn with a number of high-valued timepieces after the hold-up at about 1 p.m. in the 8th arrondissement, according to a spokesman for the Paris police.
The duo entered the store and showed their handguns — but didn’t shoot — before taking the watches and fleeing in a car. They abandoned that vehicle, which was subsequently found in the nearby Bois de Boulogne park, the police spokesman said.
The judicial police’s bandit repression brigade is overseeing the case.
Local media outlets are reporting that the stolen watches are worth around 1 million euros.
Officials at Audemars Piguet were not immediately available to comment.
The Audemars Piguet store is located in what’s referred to as the “triangle d’or” (or “golden triangle”) in the French capital, the tony shopping area situated around Avenue Montaigne, Avenue George V and Rue François 1er. Over the

Paris Couture Booms as High Spenders Flock Back

PARIS — Paris Couture Week, which begins today, is back to its usual length after tacking on an extra day last season, but with its momentum intact as luxury leaders report a steady return of high spenders to the French capital.
The number of hotel arrivals in the Greater Paris region reached a record 23.1 million in 2017, with tourist numbers expected to rise by 10 to 12 percent versus 2016, a year strongly affected by the aftermath of terrorist attacks, according to the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Genre: Comedy

Price: $ 14.99

Rental Price: $ 0.99

Release Date: June 13, 2017

Filmed in Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon’s signature whimsical style, LOST IN PARIS stars the filmmakers as a small-town Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical vagabond. When Fiona’s (Gordon) orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her 93- year-old Aunt Martha (delightfully portrayed by Academy Award®-nominee Emmanuelle Riva) who is living in Paris, Fiona hops on the first plane she can and arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom (Abel), the affable, but annoying tramp who just won’t leave her alone. Replete with the amazing antics and intricately choreographed slapstick that has come to define Abel and Gordon’s work, LOST IN PARIS is a wondrously fun and hectic tale of peculiar people finding love while lost in the City of Lights.

EXCLUSIVE: Winona Ryder Named L’Oréal Paris Brand Ambassador

L’Oréal Paris has tapped Winona Ryder to appear in a campaign tied to a massive rebrand of its U.S. hair business, WWD has exclusively learned.
A “robust, 360-campaign” comprising digital, social, TV and print advertising is set to launch Sunday during the Golden Globes with a TV commercial featuring Ryder, said Anne Marie Nelson-Bogle, senior vice president of marketing at L’Oréal Paris.
Titled “The Comeback,” the campaign is tied to the repositioning of the majority of the L’Oréal Paris hair-care products, including shampoos, conditioners and treatments, plus a few new products, under a new franchise called Elvive.
The Elvive platform focuses on damage prevention, a message L’Oréal is hoping U.S. consumers — fond of curling irons, blowouts, dry shampoo and bleach — will relate to. L’Oréal research found that eight in 10 women in the U.S. have damaged hair — and 18- to 34-year-olds in particular overindex in hot-tool-related damage.
“Everyone does love a comeback, and we will be communicating that damaged hair deserves one, too,” said Nelson-Bogle of the new campaign. “For Winona, we know that from TV sets to the red carpet, her hair has gone through many transformations — her hair is dry and damaged.”

Previously, Vetements paraded its women’s and men’s collections during the couture shows, while last season it skipped the runway in favor of a showroom presentation.
Founded in Paris in 2014, Vetements catapulted onto the fashion scene with brash, urgent shows staged in offbeat locations: the basement darkrooms of a seedy gay club one season; a shabby Chinese restaurant the next. It helped ignite the streetwear trend and brought forth a mold-breaking approach to fashion based on garments rather than seasonal themes or narratives.
Last year the brand shifted its show from the ready-to-wear schedule to couture week as a guest member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, forging a path that American brands Proenza Schouler and Rodarte followed. Vetements declined to elaborate on its rationale for the shift, however it tends to spring from Gvasalia’s creative intent. Men’s Fashion Week in Paris is

Designers Turn Out for Paris Rwanda Benefit

FESTIVE SPIRIT: It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas as guests flowed into Yannick Alléno’s three-star restaurant, the Pavillon Ledoyen, on Thursday night Numéro editor in chief Babeth Djian’s annual dinner for Rwandan children, with proceeds going to Les Amis des Enfants du Monde (Friends of the Children of the World).
Designers including Olivier Rousteing, Alber Elbaz, Alexandre Vauthier, Jean Paul Gaultier and Christan Louboutin — who took Djian for a spin on the dance floor — got into the festive spirit.
Sparkle and black was the dress code with outfits ranging from Karidja Touré’s peak-shouldered silver and black jacket by Mugler to the matching, jewelry-loaded, black and gold Saint Laurent ensembles sported by rising rock star brother-sister duo Natalie and Elliot Bergman of Wild Belle who had been flown in by the house for the event. “I love bells,” deadpanned Elliot Bergman, whipping out his phone to share a photo of a set of bronze bells he has on display in a Paris gallery. The group is recording their third album, “a back-to-roots affair,” between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Dressed in a sheer gold leaf-embroidered black gown layered over a T-shirt by Louis Vuitton, French actress Ana Girardot, who has

RAMMSTEIN: PARIS – Rammstein

Rammstein - RAMMSTEIN: PARIS artwork

RAMMSTEIN: PARIS

Rammstein

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: January 1, 2017

Catching the excitement of a spectacular concert on film is an almost impossible task. All the senses are stimulated at live events in a way that can't be replicated onscreen. Director Jonas Akerlund's extraordinary film RAMMSTEIN: PARIS is the closest anyone has ever come to cracking this dilemma. His creative rendition of the all-new stage production they delivered at Paris Bercy in March 2012 takes the art form to a whole new level, capturing the rush and grandeur of Rammstein live the way the band has always deserved. The look this time is sweaty, grimy gothic veering off into Grand Guignol, a technical tour de force that captivates you even before the music has started, as the titles flicker by like an electronic malfunction to the sinister hisses and sighs of the industrial stage set. Steam and light pulsate to a dystopian beat, a flaming torch parts the crowd, and the hooded band march ritualistically through the audience to the stage via an elevated gantry, ratcheting-up the tension. Anyone who can tease the crowd for this long is confident of delivering, and Rammstein do so in spades. As the grinding lurch of Sonne mutates into Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen, fireballs shoot skywards from the guitarists' lapels, and soon Till's flaming hands are windmilling, smoke seeping from his nose and mouth as he sings. In Feuer Frei! three of the musicians have fire shooting out of their faces, the guitars burst into flames at the end of Du Riechst So Gut, and the boomeranging fireworks Till shoots over the crowd during Du Hast have to be seen to be believed. We've all seen concert films edited so headache-inducingly fast that you can't see anything properly. Akerlund's genius here is his ability to cut the action at a breathless pace which leaves you feeling exhilarated not disorientated. Like the car crash sequences in The Bourne Ultimatum, the variety of camera angles and frenetic speed with which they assault you leaves you feeling not so much dazed as, well – like you are really there. As they thrash though Asche Zu Asche, you realize that the lens through which we're seeing Rammstein has become a seventh band member. There are strange colors, textures, kaleidoscopic visual effects, distressed overhead crowd shots that look like insects, hallucinatory dissolves of flailing band members and unsettling flash frames like Till's intermittently satanic black eyes and forked tongue, fanged creatures cavorting in the crowd and electric lightning striking Flake's keyboards like a scene from Frankenstein's laboratory. This is a new kind of concert film, the live experience enhanced – as no one in the hall would have seen it. Most bands use the B stage at the other end of the hall for an acoustic interlude. Not Rammstein. As Richard Kruspe unleashes ominous electro beats from a keyboard, the rest of the band are whipped to the podium on their knees like groveling submissives by dressed-in-drag drummer Christoph Schneider for a version of Buck Dich that raises the tempo to fire alarm levels, its explosive conclusion echoing the version that got them arrested in America. But there is tenderness too, even a moment when the band stands in silence on the B stage smiling at the audience surrounding them, soaking up the love. A concert film is never the same as being at a concert, but RAMMSTEIN: PARIS is the perfect fusion of the band's extraordinary stage show with the film editor's craft. It is a visual feast, a celebration of Rammstein live that is both different to and in some ways better than being there – and a definite contender for the best concert film of all time.

Kelela on Losing Luggage in Paris and Finding a New Look on Louis Vuitton’s Front Row

kelela

It’s the stuff of Paris Fashion Week lore: The R&B singer whose breathy vocals have become something of a siren call to designers for the Spring 2016 season, is en route to take her place front row at Louis Vuitton, one of the most highly anticipated shows of the season—and yet, her luggage simply doesn’t make it.

Panic could have set in, but as Kelela, whose throwback slow jam “Rewind” popped up on the soundtrack everywhere from Opening Ceremony to Fendi, reveals, all was not lost.

“Luckily, Vuitton saved the day and outfitted me for my entire stay,” says the D.C.-born, L.A.-based singer, who chose a selvedged denim maxi skirt, cropped jacket, and ’90s raver-girl platform boots for her Paris Fashion Week debut. Perched on the front row at Louis Vuitton alongside Grimes, her ensemble was right in step with the cyberpunk-inspired looks Nicolas Ghesquière sent down the runway.

But it was the orange ribbed knit skimmer she wore later that night, to a dinner in celebration of the house’s new collection, that really spoke to Kelela’s sense of personal style. “My favorite piece of clothing was a ribbed tangerine dress that tulips out below the knee. The garment fit like a glove, and that second-skin made me feel sexy and confident,” she says. “Whether it’s body-con or an oversize silhouette, I focus on achieving that feeling when picking my clothes.”

And of course when her music inspires the people making those clothes, it makes the art of dressing seem more like a collaboration. “It’s a very fulfilling experience to see my music paired with another artist’s blood, sweat, and tears,” says Kelela who recently released her new EP, Hallucinogen, a follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2013 debut mixtape, Cut 4 Me. “I know a lot of the designers have put so much in, so it’s an honor to provide context for those pieces to shine.”

Janelle Monae’s Paris Fashion Week Hair Owns Our Best Beauty List

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2016 was filled with major moments, including the scenic airport-themed Chanel show to the mini “Game of Thrones” reunion with Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa. But we believe Janelle Monae’s many, many hairstyles stole the spotlight.

The “Yoga” singer was spotted out and about wearing different hairdos to accentuate what she described to Vogue as her “growing, evolving” style. Having worked with Monae since her debut studio album “The ArchAndroid” in 2010, celebrity hairstylist Caprice Green told The Huffington Post that the two always “start out with some sort of game plan” when discussing hairstyle for Fashion Week. “However, it doesn’t always go as planned,” said Green. “The clothes from the designers sort of determined the look each day.”

From her signature pompadour topped with a cherry-red Kristina Dragomir heart cap to a beautiful beehive adorned with Chanel accessories, Monae and her hairstylist have pushed the boundaries on what’s considered to be “natural hair.”

Scroll down to see Monae’s hairstyles from Paris Fashion Week and to learn what Green considered when creating each look.
