Roberta Einer Eschews the Runway, and Hosts Dinner at Claridge’s Instead

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Not every designer is taking to the runway this season, with names including Roberta Einer choosing alternative ways to showcase their ideas.
To mark the 10th anniversary of her label, Einer opted for a dinner held at Claridge’s hotel and a special-edition collection photographed by Andrew Vowles. That collection featured 10 new looks, each inspired by a different season from the brand’s past.
Guests at the dinner were all wearing Roberta Einer: The stylist Soki Mak dazzled in a voluminous red mini dress, while the likes of Phoebe Lettice Thompson, Maddie Waterhouse and musician Rainy Milo exuded elegance in sugary pastel ensembles.
“There’s a really big pressure for emerging brands to compete with big megabrands by creating more looks, selling cheaper products and delivering orders to stores earlier,” said Einer.
“I think many of us are realizing that there’s not much longevity in this, and that we need to find a way of working that suits each brand personally and makes us happy overall. It feels quite empowering to be able to take a step back and reconsider the strategy how I want my brand to grow.”
She said Brexit and the environmental crisis were two things on her mind when she created her

Miley Cyrus Models in Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 Runway Show

Miley Cyrus has made her New York Fashion Week fall 2020 debut.
The singer joined a host of other models for Marc Jacobs’ fall collection, which closed out New York Fashion Week. Cyrus modeled a black bra-like top with matching trousers and was holding a zebra-print coat.

This isn’t Cyrus and Jacobs’ first time working together. The singer teamed with Jacobs in 2013 for a charitable T-shirt which showed the slogan “Protect the Skin You’re In” inscribed on top of a nude Cyrus.  She later starred in the designer’s spring 2014 campaign photographed by David Sims. Last year, the duo teamed again to support Planned Parenthood, designing a pink hoodie that read “Don’t F—k With My Freedom.”
Cyrus also wore a look from Jacobs’ fall 2013 collection to the Met Gala that year, which celebrated its “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit.

Prada to Stage Resort 2021 Runway Show in Japan

MIUCCIA HEADS TO JAPAN: Prada is heading to Japan to unveil its resort 2021 collection.
The runway show will take place on May 21, but the location of the event is still undisclosed. This will be the first show staged by Prada in Japan.
In June the brand hosted its men’s spring 2020 runway show in Shanghai.
Prada started presenting its resort collections with a show in 2017, when the luxury brand staged a runway event at the Fondazione Prada Osservatorio inside Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. In 2018 and 2019, Prada headed to New York to show its resort 2019 and 2020 collections with shows at its headquarters in Midtown Manhattan.
The Prada resort 2021 show will follow the Chanel one to be hosted in Capri on May 7 and will happen just a few days before Max Mara’s cruise runway event in St. Petersburg on May 25.
While the full schedule of resort shows is still to be defined, the pre-fall calendar already counts a Dior Men show in Miami on Dec. 3 and a Giorgio Armani women’s show on Nov. 14 at the Armani Theater in Milan. On that occasion, the designer will also unveil the first high jewelry collection under

Karlie Kloss, Alicia Silverstone Front Row at Christian Siriano’s First Paris Runway Show

So nice, he did it twice.
New York designer Christian Siriano held an encore presentation of his spring 2020 collection in Paris on Wednesday, with a few famous faces in the front row, including his “Project Runway” co-star Karlie Kloss, and actress Alicia Silverstone.
Silverstone, who will next star in “The Baby-Sitter’s Club” revival, said she’s been friends with the designer for a while, and that they are travel buddies.
“I met him about four years ago. He asked me to come to a show and I hadn’t been to a fashion show since the one I had been in for Yves Saint Laurent when I was 8! The reason I went is he didn’t use fur, he didn’t use wool, and this was reason enough for me to show up. I felt so beautiful in the clothes, and he became a dear friend.”
The Paris show was the perfect excuse for a trip, she said. “He’s such a talent. I’m a huge fan of his work, and I’m so inspired by how he creates. I love everything he puts me in, and I also lie on top of him on planes.”

Swerving the Runway: Not Every Brand Needs a Splashy Show to Succeed

LONDON — Who needs the runway when there’s the digital screen, the salon, showroom, shop floor — or a cup of tea and a chat?
Brands such as Duro Olowu, Markus Lupfer, Goat, Needle & Thread, Bella Freud, Rixo and Giuliva Heritage certainly don’t need to walk the catwalk, and neither do scores of others, in London — and other fashion cities worldwide.
In an industry where the noise has become deafening, where sustainability is top-of-mind, and communing with the end-consumer has become second nature for so many designers, the runway — with a few exceptions — can look out of date, expensive, bad for the environment – and just wrong.
During London Fashion Week, which wrapped on Tuesday, protesters from Extinction Rebellion turned up the heat outside Victoria Beckham’s show and outside the official British Fashion Council venue.
The protesters, who want to put an end to fashion production and consumption, chanted their slogans — and pleaded peacefully with showgoers to quit shopping. They held up placards that said: “Repair, re-wear, rebel,” and “Enough is enough. Fashion = Ecocide.”
Early Tuesday, during a lively debate on the sustainability of fast fashion at the Royal Danish Embassy here, Judith Watt, the fashion historian and journalism

EXCLUSIVE: Dior to Stage Runway Show for Men’s Pre-fall in Miami

THE ART OF TRAVEL: Kim Jones is deepening his ties to the art world. The designer plans to show his Dior pre-fall men’s wear collection in Miami on Dec. 3.
Jones staged his first traveling men’s show last year with a men’s pre-fall runway display in Tokyo, featuring a monumental sculpture by Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama. He will hit Miami two days before the start of Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the highlights of the year for art collectors and fashion brands alike.
With collaborations with Kaws, Raymond Pettibon and Daniel Arsham under his belt, it’s highly likely that Jones will tap another artist to work on the show.
“When I do these collections, I always think about what’s going to go in the exhibitions about Dior or Vuitton, whenever, in 50 years’ time, so it’s kind of important to have things that can create a legacy for the brand further along the line,” he told WWD recently.
The choice of location reflects not just Dior’s long-term relationship with the U.S., but also the strategic importance of the U.S. market, which accounted for 23 percent of sales at parent company LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton in the first half of 2019.

RCA Graduates Put on Combined Runway Show

FASHION’S FUTURE: London’s Royal College of Art hosted its annual MA fashion show on Friday night, dubbed “All at Once” at Cork Street Galleries in Mayfair. The group show consisted of looks from the graduating class, with each student presenting one look from his or her graduate collection, and the results were uneven.
Looks spanned the MA fashion women’s wear, men’s wear, knitwear and footwear programs. Some were shown downstairs in an exhibition style format, while others came as more of a presentation, with models moving from circle to circle, which were painted on the floor, when prompted by a speaker.
Some designs bordered on the conceptual, as in a white mesh bodysuit with scrunched and ruffled extensions that made the model look like an unraveled loofah sponge by women’s wear graduate Lili Zhao. Another model flowed to music wearing shiny purple latex leggings and matching cage-like heels from footwear graduate Annie Foo.

Other students showcased their talent for tailoring. Women’s wear graduate Yimeng Yu’s all-black outfit featured a long paneled black coat and relaxed trousers with slits that revealed flashes of skin when the model walked.

Karlie Kloss and New ‘Project Runway’ Judges on the Show’s Kinder, Gentler Reboot

When “Project Runway” launched in 2004, it pulled back the curtain on the fashion industry, made Michael Kors a household name, and elevated the role of designer into the pop culture pantheon. Running for 16 seasons with guest judges including Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ciara, the show introduced such memorable moments as the Gristedes challenge and the Thunder From Down Under challenge. And it gave millions of wannabes dreams of making it like Christian Siriano, the biggest success story among the winners.
After a nearly two-year hiatus, the show returns on March 14 to Bravo for its 17th season, reimagined for now. New host, model Karlie Kloss, who is also executive producer, is joined by a new mentor (Siriano) in the Tim Gunn role, and three regular judges — Elle magazine editor in chief Nina Garcia, a veteran of the show’s earlier iteration; former Teen Vogue editor Elaine Welteroth, and designer Brandon Maxwell.
The 17 designers competing have a range of experience, and hail from all over the world, including one contestant who is a Syrian refugee, and others who are from India and Samoa. The show will put a new emphasis on inclusion, featuring models of all races

19 Calvin Klein Runway Looks Worth Taking a Look Back At

It’s the end of an era at Calvin Klein.
The American fashion brand announced Wednesday it will not continue its traditional collection business, meaning Calvin Klein will no longer be a fixture on the fashion week runway. The news comes after the brand shuttered its 205W39NYC label in January, following the departure of its chief creative officer, Raf Simons, the prior month.
Starting his namesake label in 1968 as a coat shop, Calvin Klein grew his brand quickly, adding sportswear and lingerie. In 1973, Klein received the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award for a 74-piece women’s wear collection, becoming known for his youthful and classic American style.

While the proliferation of Klein’s underwear and jeans businesses — and legendary ad campaigns featuring the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Kate Moss and Brooke Shields — are a significant marker in the designer’s legacy, his designs on the runway were equally impactful. Most notably, Klein popularized the slipdress, which was routinely modeled by Moss on the runway.

EXCLUSIVE: Dior to Stage First Men’s Pre-Fall Runway Show in Tokyo

PARIS — In the latest sign that Dior is beefing up its men’s business, the French fashion house plans to stage its first men’s pre-fall runway show with a collection designed by Kim Jones scheduled to bow in Tokyo on Nov. 30, WWD has learned exclusively.
The choice of location reflects not just the brand’s long-term relationship with the country, but also the British designer’s fondness for Japan and the strategic importance of the Asian market.
The show will coincide with a Dior men’s pop-up at department store Isetan in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, set to open on Nov. 28 for two weeks, that will carry the first collection designed by Jones. The capsule line for summer 2019 will simultaneously go on sale at the Dior flagship in Ginza ahead of its global launch on Dec. 1.
Jones told WWD in July the capsule would include denim pieces embroidered with Dior’s signature bee, as reimagined by U.S. artist Kaws, whose real name is Brian Donnelly, who also designed a monumental floral sculpture for the designer’s debut Dior show in Paris in July.
The spring collection featured new accessories, including a men’s version of the Saddle bag; belts with a stylized CD buckle created by Matthew

‘Project Runway All-Star’ Helen Castillo Designs Jumpsuit for Blue Man Group

DOWNTOWN BLUES: For the first time in 27 years, the Blue Man Group is adding a new item to their wardrobe. “Project Runway All-Star” Helen Castillo has created a jumpsuit for the three performance artists and, unlike their stage makeup, the design is not entirely blue.
Raised in New York, the designer attended an arts magnet middle school and subsequently saw her share of traditional Broadway shows. “Kids at school would always boast about their parents or the ‘cool aunt’ taking them to see this show. I grew up knowing it [BMG] as a household name. When I was invited to see a night showing of BMG, I couldn’t believe how close it was to St. Marks Place, where I hung out as a teenager getting my first tattoo and piercings,” she said. “It was refreshing to know there’s still an authentic New York tradition being maintained at Astor Place Theatre.”
Seen by 35 million people worldwide, the show is relatable to Castillo, who likes getting creative, messy and having fun. “Typically, I am inspired by paintings or art movements, so this opportunity was a stroke of fate. Rebecca Minkoff, AOL Bring Runway to Consumers

Rebecca Minkoff is taking her athleisure collection directly to her customer.
Earlier this week the designer partnered with AOL build to bring a live, shoppable fashion show, but with a twist. Unlike Minkoff’s bi-annual runway shows during Fashion Week that are targeted to industry editors, retailers and influencers, the event that took place at AOL Studios in downtown New York City was consumer facing, with more than 200 fans in attendance.
“With the show being livestreamed and shoppable, I wanted my customer to be able to capture that from the runway. I think people are much more comfortable experimenting with that,” Minkoff said.
The designer has 100 Millennials who work in her office — ones who want to look fashionable, but also want to be able to hit the gym after work (“or at least look like they worked out,” Minkoff added).

Tom Ford Taps a Lady: Gaga to Appear in Designer’s Runway Video for Spring 2016

LONDON — Tom Ford is taking to the small screen to showcase his spring 2016 collection, putting paid to speculation that he was skipping the show season altogether.
The designer has tapped Lady Gaga to appear in the film, a runway video of the collection, which was shot by Nick Knight. The online video will be released to some editors in the early hours of Friday, and everyone will be able to view it at 1 p.m. CET on the designer’s Web site.
Ford told WWD: “Instead of having a traditional show this season, I decided to try something new. I wanted to think about how to present a collection in a cinematic way that was designed from its inception to be presented online.”
Ford’s choice is no shocker. The designer-turned-film director is in full production for his second big-screen effort, “Nocturnal Animals,” and will be shooting that until the end of November. The film stars Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, and is an adaptation of the 1993 novel “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright, which is a novel within a novel. The movie is due for release next year.

Is the Twisted Ponytail the New Topknot? Why J.W.Anderson’s Runway Hair Is a Hit

jw anderson hair braid

Cutting a clean line down the back of J.W.Anderson’s graphic black bralettes, mutton-sleeve tops, and Keith Haring–esque Pop Art prints on the runway earlier today, models’ spear-like twisted ponytails felt like sleek contradiction—well, almost. After all, the British designer’s fleet of It girl fans do tend to favor deceptively simple hair that lets their fashion do the heavy lifting, with an emphasis on urban cool.

Photo: Courtesy of Greta Villiger / @gretavilliger

Backstage, hairstylist Anthony Turner created a look that was slick, graphic, and low-maintenance by scraping the hair back into a slick ponytail, then separating the lengths into two even sections and twisting them around each other like a helix before fastening them with a band at the ends. If you’ve been mulling over fresh alternatives to air-dried waves or the now-ubiquitous topknot this season, congratulations—this is your look.

Between US Open hysteria and New York Fashion Week mania, it’s easy to forget that the Emmys are happening this Sunday. And with well-dressed nominees including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Schumer, Taraji P. Henson, and countless others attending, it’s likely that many a stylist scanned the runways in search of last-minute showstoppers. From the breathtaking gowns at Oscar de la Renta to the fashion forward and subtle minimalism of Delpozo, we’ve had our eyes on them too. Above, the top 10 dresses we hope to see having winning moments at the awards show.

Harlem Fashion Row Hosts Style Awards and Spring 2016 Runway Show

Harlem Fashion Row, which showcases emerging designers of color, hosted its style awards and spring 2016 runway show at Pier 59 on Thursday night. Mary J. Blige showed her support in the front row and honorees included actress Tracee Ellis Ross (daughter of Diana Ross), designer Azede Jean-Pierre, stylists Rachel Johnson, Misa Hylton and Groovey Lew, TV host Bevy Smith, InStyle editor Kahlana Barfield and Macy’s.
“Thank you for a moment like this, where we can all be together celebrating each other,” Ross told the crowd while accepting the Icon 360 award, in recognition of her paving the way for diversity in film and fashion. “I’m so grateful to be here. I just want to see the clothes!”
After the awards, three designers — The Fashion Deli, M-Sew and Fe Noel — sent their spring collections down the runway. “My objective was to present an alternative narrative to African design,” explained Thulare Monareng of The Fashion Deli, a retail platform for African designers. “From what I see, there’s this one-dimensional idea of what African design is, which is very print- and wax print-based.”
London-based, Bermuda-born Meagan S.E. Wellman showed her M-Sew collection after winning Bermuda Fashion Festival’s local designer showcase last month. Her spring vision took

Viva la Espadrille! Tracing Its Tracks from Spain to the Altuzarra Runway

altuzarra spring 2016

Inspired by his Basque heritage, Joseph Altuzarra showed a collection today that evoked the sun-warmed Spain that Ernest Hemingway fell in love with in the 1930s: Naturally, it was accessorized with espadrilles. These humble, flat, rope-soled shoes, dating to the 13th century, have traditionally been worn by men and women. Yves Saint Laurent put them on a wedge in the early 1970s, and today Altuzarra lifted them higher with a ladylike heel. The effect . . . caliente! Here, we trace the evolution and elevation of the espadrille.

Chromat Features Not 1, But 2 Plus-Size Models On Its Runway

We demanded diversity, and Chromat delivered.

The architecturally inspired brand, which describes its clothing as “structural experiments for the human body,” debuted its Spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection Friday night, featuring two curvy models, Sabina Karlsson and Denise Bidot, in the mix.

The models’ appearances come in the middle of New York Fashion Week and amid The Huffington Post’s #NYFW4ALL initiative, which aims to promote and highlight diverse designers, models and runway shows alike.

Chromat’s designer Becca McCharen has featured Bidot on her runway before, and has made her position on contributing to a more diverse industry crystal clear. As she told Fashionista in September 2014, “I’m so against all white, straight, skinny girl runways. That just doesn’t reflect my reality and who I am and who the Chromat woman is.”

Bidot, whose mantra is “there’s no wrong way to be a woman,” explained to The Huffington Post why being included in this show in particular was so special to her.  ”It was an absolute honor to walk a runway show that is not only in the forefront of change with technology and fashion but also visionary in the seamless inclusion of diversity. Chromat is the future of fashion,” she said.

Here’s hoping for many more awesome moments like this one to come during Fashion Week and beyond.

Jeremy Scott Teams With Melissa on Runway Show Shoes

MAN MADE: If the music at Jeremy Scott’s forthcoming runway show in New York comes blaring from the speakers singing, “Life in plastic, it’s fantastic” — the infamous lyrics from Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” — it wouldn’t be without good reason. That’s because at Scott’s Sept. 14 show, models’ feet will be bound in plastic shoes — designed in collaboration between Scott and Brazilian plastic footwear brand Melissa.
Scott — who will make his fashion week appearance straight off a noted involvement with MTV’s Video Music Awards — designed two Melissa-produced shoes for his spring show. Further information regarding their make, appearance and retail availability could not be learned.
In teaming with Melissa, Scott joins the Brazilian brand’s past collaborators including Vivienne Westwood and Karl Lagerfeld.

Honey, I Shrunk the Saint Laurent! 10 Adorably Chic Kids Looks Inspired by Fall’s Top Runway Trends

Photo: Corbis

Traditionally, mommy-and-me dressing has existed somewhere on the sidelines of fashion, in a pink-hued world of sugar and spice, where everything is frilly and matchy-matchy. Which is sweet and all, but where’s the fun? And variety? Not every little girl wants to dress like a princess each morning, as North West, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, and Suri Cruise can attest.

Dolce & Gabbana, whose Fall collection celebrated motherhood, isn’t alone in giving the throwback approach to dressing la familia a rethink. “It’s never too early to play with fashion,” says Assistant Market Editor Anny Choi, who selected looks from the Fall collections to inspire a guide to the season which has the major trends—from the neo-boho look at Burberry Prorsum to Loewe’s shinny metallics—covered for kids. Far from being copycat looks, these clothes are maximally chic while being totally age-appropriate, too. “The trick,” Choi explains, “is putting all the pieces together to make a statement.

Hot Off the Runway: Women’s Fashion Trends for Fall

If you want to be on the cutting edge of fashion for fall, don’t look to shop windows, look to the future! As I often tell my clients, if you see it in stores, it’s already out, which is why I keep an eye on global trend forecasts. This week at MAGIC, the semiannual fashion trade show in Las Vegas, I soaked up the latest in men’s and women’s lifestyle and apparel trends, color trends, and much, much more.

In a seminar led by Melissa Moylan, Creative Director of Womenswear at FashionSnoops (a trend forecasting agency), I got the scoop on global trends for gals next year (fall/winter ’16-17). So if you’re a buyer, a designer, or a forward-thinking fashionista, read on! FashionSnoops identified four major up-and-coming trend stories for fall: Method + Madness, Weekender, Raven, and Varsity Daze. And while each of these distinct trends is uniquely inspired, they do share some common elements–colors, fabrics, silhouettes, and details–you can look out for regardless of your affinity for any particular trend.

COLOR

Hues predicted to be popular for winter come from an earthy and warm, yet bold, color palette. Neutrals such as Ivory, Biscuit, Flax, Camel, Toffee, and Dust Grey form a supple base for the richer, more vibrant colors in the Fall ’16 color story.

Vintage hues and jewel tones also play an important role across global trend forecasts with colors like Forest, Navy, Plum, Crimson, Scarlet Fever (a bright, orange-based red) and Roast (a chocolatey espresso brown) laying a foundation of deep undertones.

Mid-tones and accent colors include Olive, Pea, Marigold, Tangerine, Cyan, Teal, and Indigo, along with my personal favorites (for their freshness): Baby Blue, Rose Taupe, Bronze, and Lavender Grey.

SILHOUETTE

The key silhouettes to look out for in ladies’ fall fashion are A-line skirts and dresses (in both mid-lengths and floor dusters), culottes, and wide-leg pants. Also predicted to turn heads are turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks, as well as oversized sweaters, blanket coats, and floor-length overcoats.

FABRIC

According to the forecast, textiles such as boiled and compressed wools, twills, tweeds, and chunky knits will keep you both stylish and warm when the weather start to cool. On the softer side, sheer satin, chiffon, cozy cashmere, and plush, teddy-bear-like fabrics (think: wearable Ted) will be white-hot for winter.

DETAILS & ACCESSORIES

Already dangling in your favorite boutiques, suede fringe will continue to play a prominent role in apparel and accessories. (Ladies, it’s time to let your inner cowgirl lose!) Lace and laser cut-outs are two details also forecasted to remain strong. Keep an eye out for vintage-y patches and appliqués; think old-school letterman jackets and sweaters, along with team pennants and athletic patches. In a nod to handicraft, big buttons, quilting, and patchwork will also be popular, while updated ditsies, graphics, and photography will spice up patterns and prints. As for footwear, the wedge bootie is predicted to give your seasonal style a kick!

So if you want your winter wardrobe to weather more than just one season–while still being on the forefront of fashion–start stocking your closet now with vintage-inspired colors and details; cozy, oversized knits; and cowgirl-meets-Little-House-on-the-Prairie fabrics and accessories.

Looking Back: Alexander McQueen’s ‘Highland Rape’ 1995 Runway

Designers from Vivienne Westwood to Oscar de la Renta and Isaac Mizrahi have long mined Scottish tartans for inspiration. But perhaps none is more closely associated with the theme than Alexander McQueen, who broke out with his seminal “Highland Rape” collection in 1995 and reprised it for fall 2006 with his “Widows of Culloden” effort, which he described as “very ‘Macbeth.’” WWD called it “a moment” that lived up to the hype — “fabulously creative and achingly wearable.” Afterward, McQueen said, “I wanted to show a more poetic side to my work….I find beauty in melancholy.”

Two Double-Mastectomy Survivors Walked Topless Down A Runway For A Powerful Reason

It was a powerful moment: the event was a fashion show that sought to challenge normative ideas of gender and beauty, and there, walking the runway were two double mastectomy survivors, both topless and wearing nothing but underwear.

The two women are cancer survivors Emily Jensen and Melanie Testa, and they were modeling the creations of Play Out, a New York City-based company that specializes in gender-inclusive undergarments. The show took place during Rainbow Fashion Week, a weeklong event that’s part of NYC Pride.

play out 2

Abby Sugar, co-founder of Play Out, told Mashable that the point of the show was to challenge gender norms and empower people of all bodies. She said she also hoped to spread awareness about “flattoppers,” or women who have undergone mastectomies and have chosen to remain flat-chested.

“We wanted to … show that you can be yourself, no matter your gender presentation or after a cancer diagnosis,” she said. “We also want to … keep breaking down barriers in terms of gender expectations. It’s underwear, no matter your gender presentation or sexual orientation (gay, straight, bi, pan, etc.), we should all be able to wear whatever underwear makes us feel sexy and affirms our sense of self.”

Earlier this year, Play Out released a powerful photo campaign featuring double-mastectomy survivors. Both Jensen, founder of Flattopper Pride, an organization that supports LGBTQ breast cancer survivors, and Testa took part in the series. They said at the time that they hoped the campaign would serve to empower other survivors.

“Living in a society that does not reflect the image of my body [type] — breast-less, scarred, affected by cancer — has great consequence and influence to those who are newly diagnosed,” Jensen told HuffPost in May. “Not all women choose reconstruction or feel that it will make them whole again; some feel quite whole without breasts and without the need to wear breast forms. I choose to embrace my body as is and blithely proceed with grace and dignity. My hope is that other women will see these images in their time of need and that they will feel empowered and informed about flat reconstruction as one option among many.”

Flattopper Pride was also born from a similar sentiment, she said.

One in eight women [in the U.S.] will have breast cancer in their lifetime. Fifty-eight percent of those women will not have reconstructive surgeries. That is a huge percentage of the population that is flat, yet people are shocked to see flattoppers,” Jensen told HelloGiggles in a recent interview. “Flattopper Pride began as a result of my realization that people like me had nowhere to turn for support, or even for a compassionate ear.”

Find out more about Flattopper Pride here; and visit Play Out’s website to learn more about their underwear, which the company says are designed to appeal to all genders. Play Out told Mashable that the company is planning on expanding its product line to include plus-size products, and new items including tank tops and bandeaus.

Zayn Malik’s Street Style Is Pulled Straight from the Louis Vuitton Runway

zayn celeb style

The men’s collections just kicked off in Paris, and while the runways are filled with everything from cross-body bags and athletic-inspired attire, the fashion in the front row is equally compelling. Taking his seat earlier today at Louis Vuitton was former One Direction crooner Zayn Malik, who put his own spin on vacation dressing in a distinctive rock-star ensemble from the house’s spring 2016 collection.

While florcore isn’t anything new—here’s looking at you, Pharrell!—the 22-year-old modified the motif with a retro vibe, and the jacket swung between collegiate prep and Hawaiian escape. Completing the singer’s blue note were tailored trousers and crisp white tennis shoes. If this is any indication of the look he’s crafting for his solo career, then expect to see him rise to the top of the charts.

From Chipotle to the Runway: The Unlikely Modeling Career of Angel Rutledge

angel rutledge chipotle

Angel Rutledge

Expand

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

Model Angel Rutledge arrives at the Vogue.com offices looking like she is fresh from a hazy day hanging out on a California boardwalk: a skateboard in tow and mile-high legs jutting out from a pair of cutoff shorts, all chill West Coast drawl and proverbial cool-kid shoulder shrug at life. But don’t let her nickname fool you, the model’s got an angular sharpness and tomboy edge to her features, a look that has secured her exclusive spots with Proenza Schouler, as well as Louis Vuitton—a house that she has walked for ever since her debut. And it’s all a far cry from Rutledge’s former life: Just a year ago, she was posting selfies on Instagram @angelpupledge at her job on the burrito bar at a Chipotle in Burbank, California.

Rutledge never thought modeling was on the menu: The 20-year-old Angelica (named after a truck that her mother spotted advertising “Angelica Linens”) grew up in Valencia, California, in an all-American suburban setting; a star volleyball player in high school, her stats surged far beyond the national average. “In high school, I was intimidating to people. I was scary because I was ripped and buff. I played volleyball and we did six hours of conditioning for five days over the week for five weeks in summer, “ says Rutledge. “At that point I could lift and bench-press 185 pounds. I was this buff girl whose shoulders could touch in the back.” Her dedication to hard work on the court soon translated into the work force: At fifteen, she scored an after-school job at a local sushi restaurant. A late-night food industry gig proved to be too hectic for a high school student, though “At first, I didn’t understand my schedule would be so packed. I worked four days a week and on the weekends,” says Rutledge. “But I’ve always been a worker because my parents always have; I just copied.”

So how does one go from food service to the runway? Add one part farm-to-table fast food, one part luck, a dash of hitting the genetic jackpot, wrap in a tortilla, and serve: After graduating high school, Rutledge took a full-time job at a Chipotle, which provided ample time to work on her upper body strength.“I had to prepare the sour cream, the cheese, shred the cheese, and make the corn salsa—all the salsas,” says Rutledge. “But I probably liked the corn salsa because I could use my hands and use my upper arms. We would put the corn in a big bowl and mix all the ingredients. I was literally hugging hundreds of pounds of corn.” A few months into the job, fate stepped in. “This guy comes in, in shorts and a tank top, total surfer, and took a look at me,” says Rutledge, who was on the clock in her visor and apron at the time. “I was like, ‘Hey, how are you doing? What can I get you?’ He told me to talk to him around the corner and asked if I ever thought about modeling. He just wrote his number down on the paper. It was kind of weird, but he knew what he was doing and it seemed legit.” That man was photographer David Mushegain, who promptly took her Polaroids and sent them off to The Lions agency in New York City. “Two days later, [Mushegain] was like, ‘Can you come to New York? You just need to quit your job,” says Rutledge. She called it off with Chipotle soon after, but can still make a killer burrito. And with a story like that, we’ll have what she’s having.

The Updo That Goes from Black Tie to Brunch: One Vogue Editor Test-Drives Chanel’s Runway Hair

chanel-chignon

When it comes to black-tie events, we “wash and go” types are acutely aware of the problems poised by the need for an evening coiffure. I tend toward an I-hope-intentionally-looking rumpled, long, easy mane, or coil the whole mess into a tight knot that I like to imagine passes for strict and sophisticated (I am of the age where I have come to realize that my face benefits from my hair being out of its way). This is who I am! I think, I do not require a hair dryer! Or a pin! Or even a brush, for that matter; any sort of measure beyond the odd elastic! And then, of course, I saw the Chanel fall 2015 collection last month in Paris.

The messy chignons on the runway (hat tip to backstage whiz Sam McKnight) were sultry, they were subtle, they were unfussy and up; it was enough to make me rethink my entire approach to life, or at least my approach to event dressing. My desire to attempt it was immediate—and thank heaven for the very patient New York–based hairstylist Cameron Rains, who worked with McKnight backstage at said Chanel show and instantly got what I was after when he arrived at my Tribeca apartment to help me get ready for Friday night’s Save Venice gala.

“It’s super easy and very sexy,” he said, brushing and spraying (Bumble and Bumble, natch) and pinning my strands into a perfectly imperfect modern coif. The black ribbon he fixed around the nape of my neck as a makeshift headband was the insouciant icing on the cake (though Rains noted it renders a much more graphic effect on a blonde; rejoice, ye towheads). Even better? The look seamlessly went from topping a new Michael Kors frock for black tie uptown that night to a vintage denim-clad downtown brunch (next-day hair: very rock ’n’ roll) the following morning in the blink of an eye. Just sleep on it, fix your ribbon, and go.

Beyoncé Reigns Victorious in a Rainbow Frock Straight From the Fall Runway

Beyonce

It was only yesterday that Beyoncé joined her husband Jay Z at a Manhattan press conference to announce his new music streaming service, Tidal, which boasts a roster that includes Kanye West, Madonna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Daft Punk, and Jack White, amongst others—so let’s just say the couple has something to celebrate. It’s no wonder, then, that the superstar took to the streets of Manhattan today in a shimmering rainbow frock and braided satin shoes straight off of Marco de Vincenzo’s Milan runway—the formfitting dress perfectly captures the whimsy of the eighties—a notably strong era for the music industry as well as a trend that took the fall runways by storm at Christopher Kane, J.W.Anderson, and Louis Vuitton. Clearly, Queen B is earning her title.

Rules for the Runway

The first Fashion Week (then called Press Week) was held in New York in 1943. Today, there are two Fashion Weeks in the city each year, in February and September. New York’s version is considered one of the four major fashion events in the world (the others are in Paris, Rome, and Milan). If you’re lucky enough to be invited to a fashion show, there are some general rules for behavior that you should observe.

1. Invitations come at a premium, so remember that you’re the guest of a fashion house and be sure to RSVP your invitation.

2. Be punctual. The show will not begin late just because you are, which means your seat will be filled before you can beg for forgiveness.

3. You’re not obliged to wear clothes from the designer of the show you’re attending unless you’re an A-list celebrity who will be photographed.

4. Take your seat, not Kim Kardashian’s. If the seat does not have your name on it, it’s not yours. A certain A-list celebrity once took my seat, but I had no problem getting it back.

5. If you’re sitting in the front row, don’t cross your legs. With the different lengths of hemlines these days, the photographers might capture more than they should.

6. Manage your accessories. If you have chopsticks in your hair, remove them for the guests behind you. Turn off your cell phone and keep your umbrella pointed down. If you’re carrying a large bag, place it close to your chair so no one can trip over it.

7. Never chew gum here or anywhere else in public. You might end up in an unflattering video.

8. It’s okay to use your smartphone, but do so discreetly. It’s distracting to the people around you otherwise.

9. Once the show begins, stay in your seat. It’s rude to leave for any reason except an emergency.

10. Clapping for the designer at the end of the show is fine, but hooting and waving your arms as if you were at a football game is not.

Three Spring Trends Make Their Way From Runway to Tabletop

holding-runway-to-table

David Stark has planned hundreds of successful parties, penned five books about them, and could probably set a table with his eyes closed. Yet more than nineteen years into his career, Stark still delights in finding inspiration in unexpected places. Happily, he was game to take some time away from planning weddings and corporate events to dress up three tables in looks inspired by the spring runway. Whether layering pattern and texture for a luxe bohemian look, mixing gingham checks, or going bold with bright blossoms, Stark’s sense of play is always balanced by his obsession with quality. Here, he shares tips and inspiration for planning fashionable get togethers.

Luxe Bohemian

Dries Van Noten’s Eastern collection inspires a table setting in patterned and natural tones. “Whether culled from actual or imagined journeys all over the world, it’s the layering of textures, tones, and items of varying international provenance that give your table richness,” says Stark, who recommends black pillar candles of varying heights to light this exotic assemblage of embroidery, bamboo, glass, and china.

Gingham

Picnics aren’t the only place for playful gingham, as the spring runways proved. Whether perched on a blanket in the shade of a tree, or more formally seated at a table, there’s a way to take the check in a sophisticated direction. For starters, suggests Stark, “vary the size, scale, and color of your plaids.” Here, he’s shifted the scale by using contrasting gingham for tablecloth and napkins, and then added colored flatware and border-striped teacups that combine a casual look with superb quality.

Bold Florals

Romantic blooms have made way for brighter, bolder florals this spring. “Flirty and loud, these larger-scaled, vividly colored blooms make for an exotic garden table,” says Stark.

Gisele Bündchen Is Retiring from the Runway: Here Are Her Best Catwalk Moments

Gisele Bundchen retires from runway

For more than fifteen years, Gisele Bündchen—with her legs for miles, sand-strewn tresses, and an eternally enviable beach babe physique—has been a staple on the runway. Now, the Brazilian bombshell has announced that she is hanging up her stilettos—according to a statement from her sister and spokeswoman, Patricia Bündchen, she is officially retiring her signature, hip-jutting strut from the runway. And we’re not just talking about the Victoria’s Secret shows—it was just last season that she walked for Chanel, and Bündchen’s roots reach way back to the runways of Oscar de la Renta, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana, among others. Her standout saunters have ranged from her barely clothed breakthrough neophyte moment, drenched in rain and teetering on a slippery sopped-up stage for Alexander McQueen’s Untitled spring 1998 show to her sweet and saccharine opening for Marc Jacobs spring 2004 as a warm-weather stunner. So that’s it: She came, she saw, she conquered, and she’s off to her home country, where she’ll reportedly close out her career on the catwalk at São Paulo Fashion Week for Colcci. But don’t fret—the supermodel will still star in campaigns, editorials, and yes, we’ll always have Instagram! Here, we take a walk down memory lane and remember Bündchen’s best catwalk moments.
