The annual Serpentine Summer Party once again served as a coming-out fete for London’s short-lived heat wave. Security this year was tighter, but the guest list was wilder. Scottish-born Christopher Kane along with his muse-cum-friend Alexa Chung and Dasha Zhukova, in association with NARS Cosmetics, played host to the gallery’s unveiling of a new Pavilion commission—and celebration of its fifteenth anniversary.
The Serpentine’s directors, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton-Jones (in custom canary Christopher Kane), introduced the vibrant new space by Spanish architects SelgasCano. Poppy Delevingne—in a white and Klein Blue spiderweb see-through Kane dress—was seen rescuing society girl Sophia Hesketh’s vintage Pucci gown from the hinges of a door: “There’ll be nothing left of it!” she shrieked, as the girls made their way to a semi-transparent shoe box–like dance tent.
Suki Waterhouse—in fairy tale pistachio Valentino—played babysitter to her younger (even more excited) sister Immy as they fished their stilettos out of the freshly mown grass, following the throng of couture towards a crammed bandstand blaring out crowd-pleasers. The hits came in the form of Mark Ronson, who else, following the revival of Brit five-piece Spandau Ballet earlier in the evening: much to the delight of most of the women in attendance—with guitar player Gary Kemp being watched by ex-wife Sadie Frost arm in arm with makeup matriarch Charlotte Tilbury.
Edie Campbell initiated the raucous dancing to Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” wearing a LVMH prize–winner Marques ‘ Almeida Schiaparelli pink leather skirt and powder blue chiffon top; as designer Matthew Williamson tested the strength of the bandstand’s poles.
Afterwards, guests gracefully made their exit, relocating at Annabel’s for the after-party. Was that my imagination or was that Johnny Depp inconspicuously making his way through the gallery? “Dur, of course it was,” said socialite and model Jack Guinness, “Everybody comes to THIS party.”
