The future of gaming has officially launched… on Samsung’s flagship smartphone, that is.

On Tuesday (Sept.15), Microsoft’s cloud gaming service Xbox Game Pass Ultimate officially exited the beta mode and is now available in the Samsung Galaxy store. The new service allows gamers to play 100 games on either their Samsung Galaxy Note20, Note20 Ultra, or Galaxy Tab S7.

Samsung also announced it will be offering consumers an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Bundle when they purchase a Galaxy Note20 (or qualifying Samsung Galaxy device) as well as the MOGA Bluetooth Controller. Consumers will get a 3-month subscription, but you will have to move fast because Samsung is only offering the bundle for a limited time.

We got a chance to experience Xbox Game Pass Ultimate while it was still in the beta phase, and we must say it worked smoothly on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra.

We even spoke with professional Fortnite streamer, Myth, and he is all-in with the new way to play Triple-A Xbox titles.

“I remember just thinking to myself like, “Is this real?” (laughs). Because I couldn’t, I didn’t, it was hard for me to imagine trying to tell my 10-year-old or 12-year-old self exactly what I’m doing right now. Like I don’t think past me would believe in what exactly is going on. So, that’s how I felt about it, if I had to go back a few years and explain to a younger version of me how you’re able to play games nowadays, I just straight up wouldn’t believe you. I’d be like, “Yeah, okay, bro, cut it out. Like, you’re joking. You’re joking, right? Like, I could play years on my- on my phone, yeah, on my couch, or on my bed, maybe while I’m using the bathroom?”

We share that same excitement with Myth because this will be a gamechanger in the mobile gaming world. Samsung’s partnership with Microsoft gives the Korean tech company a clear advantage in that department over Apple, which only has Apple Arcade to offer to iPhone owners.

Tkees Opens Miami Store, More in Works

With its flip-flops already on feet all over Miami, Tkees chose the endless-summer city to roll out retail. The decade-old, Brazilian brand opened a 700-square-foot boutique in the Miami Design District on Feb. 22; locations in New York and Los Angeles are slated by year’s end. In addition to women’s and children’s footwear and women’s apparel, which launched in 2019, the all-shoppable concept extends to husband-and-wife founders Carly and Jesse Burnett’s selection of home decor and art.
“We wanted the store to be more than a white box. We wanted it to take you somewhere,” said Jesse of expanding into brick-and-mortar after building a wholesale business that currently hovers around 600 accounts. “Even saying the word retail feels dangerous now, but retail’s not dead — boring retail is dead.”
Rather than see it as risky, he said well-rounded business models need to embrace all channels. Tkees fared well in the e-commerce transition, with digital multibrand stores and department stores’ online divisions accounting for 60 percent of its wholesale business. Miami ranks in its top three markets for e-commerce, and Tkees’s web site has only been a boon for wholesale partners.

Enfants Riches Déprimés Chooses Paris for First Store

BONJOUR PARIS: Los Angeles-based ready-to-wear label Enfants Riches Déprimés has chosen Paris for its first flagship.
Founded in 2012 by artist and designer Henri Alexander Levy, the brand picked a former jeweler’s atelier on the Rue Charlot in the Marais for its first brick-and-mortar space.
Working with architect Didier Faustino, the 164-square-foot boutique was designed to mirror a Twenties’ bank vault. The walls of the two floors, one on ground level and one below, were covered with stainless-steel plaques that catch the light coming in through the old-school Parisian storefront. Slabs of dark marble were used to create countertops, on which jewelry and accessories will be presented, as well as the staircase winding down toward the lower level.
Downstairs, in a room covered with wall-to-wall steel panels, a lime carpet added a touch of color, matching the Pierre Paulin ABCD sofa picked by Levy to decorate the space, which has steel racks subtly blending into the walls.

Everlane Opens First Permanent L.A. Store

San Francisco-based, direct-to-consumer brand Everlane has opened its first permanent shop in Los Angeles, where it all started eight years ago.
The mission-driven basics line beloved by Meghan Markle, Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie and more, has opened a 3,188 square-foot store at 1101 Abbot Kinney in Venice, stocking Everlane’s denim, Ts and popular shoe styles including the Day Heel and Day Glove, alongside seasonal new arrivals. The space features huge glass windows, tons of natural white and a dramatic archway leading to the fitting rooms. 
“Everlane has had roots in L.A. since we launched in 2011. It’s where our first product, the T-shirt, was made just outside of downtown, where they’re still made today. It’s also the home of our first pop-up and recent experiential concept store, Tread by Everlane,” said Tara Shanahan, vice president of retail at Everlane. “We know there is a huge appetite for the brand and after testing concept shops in a few different areas in L.A., we landed on Abbot Kinney for its sense of community, laid-back feel and the incredible foot traffic it sees on a day-to-day basis.”

Depop Takes Over Selfridges With a Pop-up Store

LONDON — Depop is giving its online vendors an off-line space in Selfridges.
The vintage finds marketplace has taken over space in the department store’s Designer Studio, on the third floor. The pop-up will run for three months, until the end of October.
Products have been hung on a moving rail, similar to those found at the dry cleaners to mimic the look and feel of an online marketplace. The rotating rail can be turned on and off with a switch controlled by the customer.
“It was interesting to bring our marketplace — which is so diverse, broad, scrapping and thrifty — into an elegant destination. So we came up with this idea that we thought was a nice representation of Depop, because it is this never-ending cycle of unique items,” said Peter Semple, chief marketing officer of Depop.
At the moment, merchandise on the rail includes a diamond-patterned vintage pair of pants from Versace, graphic Marily Manson and Public Enemy shirts and limited-edition sneakers from Nike from three online stores that sell to Depop — @NS_Shop, @Ladskazeem and @Archive_Dna.

Dior to Open Temporary Champs-Elysées Store on July 15

FACE OFF: The Dior flagship on Avenue Montaigne is about to close for renovations, but the facade of the building will travel: a reproduction of the historic headquarters will be superimposed on its new temporary boutique on Avenue des Champs-Elysées, opening on July 15.
The trompe l’oeil image, which lifts up at the corner like a page being turned, also went up on an advertising billboard on Place de la Concorde in Paris on Monday.

The Dior store, located next to the Publicis Drugstore and across the road from Cartier, opens at a troubled time for the Champs-Elysées, which has been repeatedly closed to traffic and public transport since the gilets jaunes, or yellow vests, protests started last November.
The Avenue Montaigne boutique will close shortly before the Champs-Elysées store opens its doors, a spokeswoman for the brand said. The new boutique at 30 Avenue Montaigne, a building which also houses offices and the brand’s haute couture ateliers, is expected to reopen in 2020.

FEMALE PERSUASION: Celine is putting the spotlight on women artists with its latest boutique in Paris, its fourth opening in the French capital in as many months.
The store on Rue Duphot, just off Rue Saint-Honoré, carries women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and accessories. In line with creative director Hedi Slimane’s new retail concept, inaugurated in New York City in February, the 3,770-square-foot space features a mix of his furniture designs, vintage pieces and original art works.
They include a ceramic sculpture by German artist Katinka Bock; a sculpture by Chinese artist Hu Xiaoyuan incorporating materials such as rosewood, ink, raw silk and nails; a wall-mounted sculpture by Canadian artist Georgia Dickie, who often works with found objects, and a work by fellow Canadian Rochelle Goldberg. Rounding out the selection is a man, Brazilian artist Deyson Gilbert.

Delvaux Mounts Magritte Exhibit in New York Store

Delvaux will bring its partnership with the Magritte Foundation Stateside, mounting an in-store exhibit of five René Magritte works that have not yet been seen publicly.
The show, opening Tuesday, is a brand-building exercise, according to Delvaux chief executive officer Jean-Marc Loubier. The Belgian leather goods firm opened its first U.S. store in January, and is interested in building local goodwill through experiential pop-ups in the shop.
Loubier said that Magritte enthusiasts not interested in purchasing a bag are still welcome to come view the works. “We are not arrogant, we are always welcoming people,” Loubier said. “We want people to discover us, our universe. The moment people come to us and enjoy, they have a good memory so they can come back or tell a friend. We want to be appreciated here long-term, that is the development we are doing.”
The Magritte works will be on view until May 24. To mark the occasion, Delvaux has released a new collection of Magritte-inspired accessories — a motif the brand has been working with and evolving over the past few years. Small leather goods and a men’s travel bag bear the artist’s famous rendering of a cloudy sky.

Dennis Basso Opens First Store in Qatar

An outdoor plaza shopping center anchored by Galeries Lafayette is the home to Dennis Basso’s first store in Doha.
Basso’s 1,800-square-foot unit is near the Cartier, Graff and Van Cleef & Arpels boutiques. Back in New York, the designer said Friday that he hopes this first store will lead to others in the Midde East. The opening was made possible through the Ali Bin Ali Holding company. Designed by Ali Bin Ali’s in-house team, Basso said the decor consists of a range of cream-colored interiors with pale gray marble and vaulted high ceilings. It is also a corner store, which allows for greater visibility, enhanced by the valet car service offered near the store’s entrance.
One of the greatest features from the designer’s point of view is the outdoor air conditioning provided by cool air that is blasted upward through grates. While Qatari woman generally wear abayas and head scarves on the street, their attire tends to be more colorful or embellished when at home, at special events or traveling. “When they’re going to a gala, they really want to be gala,” Basso said, adding that his collection was well-received at the launch, which included a dinner and an in-store event.

American Apparel Pulls Back on Los Angeles Store Plans — for Now

LOS ANGELES — American Apparel has tabled plans to reenter retail via a Los Angeles store as it focuses on continuing the momentum within other areas of its business.
The company continues to still have a leasehold on the Melrose Avenue location where it intended to open the store.
“We’ve been really focused on solidifying the brand’s e-commerce B2C web site and platform, expanding its reach to over 220 countries around the world,” said Garry Bell, vice president of corporate marketing and communications at American Apparel parent Gildan Activewear Inc. “These initiatives allowed us to substantially increase sales online year-over-year and we look forward to keep[ing] the momentum going.”
Bell went on to say growing the company’s imprintables business in England, Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand is also an area of focus.
The store isn’t off the table and “as we continue to assess other opportunities, we will reviews the plans for the store,” Bell said.
Gildan’s acquisition of the American Apparel business, which filed for bankruptcy twice in less than two years’ time, included the company’s intellectual property and some inventory. The chain of stores were left off the negotiating table, largely seen as a drain on the business at the time.

Kate Hudson Opens First Fabletics Store in New York City

Fabletics is flexing its retail muscle in New York. On April 27, the El Segundo, Calif.-based activewear line cofounded in 2013 by actress Kate Hudson and part of the TechStyle Fashion Group opens it first physical store at 577 Broadway in Manhattan.
In addition to offering the digital-first brand’s full range of activewear, the 2,743-square-foot SoHo pop-up will have several interactive features to bring its active lifestyle to life, including an Instagram-ready mini boxing ring with custom gloves, and medicine ball installation for on-the-spot crunches.
“We have such a large Tristate consumer base, going to New York was always something we wanted to do from the start,” said Hudson. “What’s exciting about doing the pop-up is we will be able to discover, if we are doing a long-term store, how big and where and what is the most strategic location for the customer. We are super-excited.”

Rising Jewelry Brand Prounis Marks Department Store Entry

Jean Prounis’ namesake fine jewelry line, Prounis, next week marks its entry into department stores.
The brand will hold a trunk show at Bergdorf Goodman for the next month. Running from Feb. 26 through March 28, the Prounis trunk show will mark its kick-off with a personal appearance by the designer on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
Bergdorf’s adds to Prounis’ roster of specialty stockists that already include Dover Street Market in New York and Los Angeles, Holly Golightly in Copenhagen, and Desert Vintage in Tuscon, Ariz. She has also held a trunk show with Moda Operandi’s digital interface.
“Bergdorf Goodman, in particular, has a really great timelessness. It’s such a historical store that I feel is in line with my brand story and image. They really care about quality and there is this sense of yesteryear, an homage to a New York elegance of the past,” Prounis, 25, said of her decision to show with the department store.

‘Waste No More’ Installation to Preview at Eileen Fisher’s Brooklyn Store

Consumers who won’t be taking the trip to Milan for this year’s installment of Salone del Mobile will be able to get a glimpse of “Waste No More” at Eileen Fisher’s Brooklyn store.
From April 4 to 7, the installation will be the focal point of the designer’s Carroll Gardens boutique and it’s meant to emphasize a zero-waste mentality. The all-white and ecru Waste No More garments and interior decor items are meant to express essentialism — as in buy what you need and reuse repeatedly. To emphasize that point, a new Waste No More web site and Instagram handle will be launched at a press preview on April 3. La Prestic Ouiston Expands With Plans for Store in Paris

A NEW FLAME: Rounding out a globetrotting tour of pop-up stores, La Prestic Ouiston is opening its first boutique in the Saint Germain district of Paris and launching an e-commerce site at the start of next year.
Nearly a decade old, the upscale Parisian label best known for original prints and fluid silhouettes, has recently experienced a surge of interest abroad, where it is sold in places including Fivestory in New York, Ron Herman in Los Angeles and Japan, Hanwha Galleria in Seoul, and soon on Matchesfashion.com.
For the label’s designer Laurence Mahéo, opening a Paris store will offer the chance to return to her design roots with one-off items. Rebag Opens First Mall Store in Downtown Manhattan

Luxury handbag resale firm Rebag has opened its fifth store in the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center mall.
The store in downtown Manhattan at 185 Greenwich Street represents the handbag firm’s first mall location. It is also its third New York City site. Two other stores were opened earlier this year on the West Coast in Los Angeles, one in Beverly Hills and the other in Melrose Place. The Madison Avenue store in midtown Manhattan opened earlier this year, as well. The first store in SoHo was opened last fall as a pop-up, then was converted to a permanent location, also earlier this year.
Rebag’s neighbors in the Westfield center mall include Dior Beauty, Breitling, mattress firm Casper and the Apple Store. The store features Rebag’s signature Rebag Bar, where consumers can check in with their handbags and get an estimate on their value. Also a feature in the store is the company’s Hermès Birkin Wall, which shows all available Birkin bags at the store.
Following the opening at Oculus, Rebag will start exploring growth and traffic at U.S. mall sites.

Heron Preston’s First Store Opens in Hong Kong

HERALDING HERON–It was a pinch-me moment for Heron Preston.
The streetwear designer was standing outside 55 Paterson Street in Causeway Bay with a crowd which had gathered to christen his new shopfront, the first ever physical store for his young brand.
“I think it was Supreme’s James Jebbia who said, ‘the brand isn’t real until you have a store,’”Preston mused. While the truth of that could be debatable in this digital era, there was no doubting the emotion it held for the designer. “It feels real now. Real-er than real,” he said.
New York might’ve been an obvious choice for a first foray into brick-and-mortar for the American, but Preston pointed out how his new shop sits kitty corner to spaces for his friends: Virgil Abloh’s Off-White and Marcelo Burlon of Palm Angels.
“It’s become a good luck city to launch in amongst my partners. Off-White, Virgil launched his first store here. Marcelo from Palm Angels, we’re part of the same group,” Preston said.

Heron Preston’s first shop is located at 55 Paterson Street in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay.

Dior Makes Big U.S. Push With Meatpacking District Pop-up Store

PARIS — Dior’s latest push into the U.S. market spans the online world and the physical one — the latter complete with a menagerie of toy animals that look as if they might stampede into the French brand’s eclectic new pop-up in Manhattan.
The temporary store opened on Monday in the city’s Meatpacking District, offering a complete selection of the French fashion house’s offer for women, men and children.
The pop-up coincides with the arrival of Dior’s U.S. e-commerce site, which is launching on Nov. 28 with a capsule collection designed by men’s creative director Kim Jones in collaboration with U.S. artist Kaws, and will be expanded in February to all other categories.
“New York is very important for us. In the U.S., Dior is strong, but I think that we need further awareness,” said Pietro Beccari, chief executive officer of Dior. “I believe that this idea of the Meatpacking [District pop-up] is coming at the right time.”
Expected to operate for four months, the pop-up is divided into rooms featuring products that will rotate as new merchandise comes on stream. Beccari compared the space to the Marché aux Puces in Paris, which gathers antique dealers offering everything from vintage clothes to Art Deco furniture

Yohji Yamamoto Launches Global E-commerce Store

BEIJING–International fans of the Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto now have a one-stop digital shop for all his goods in the form of “Yohji Yamamoto The Shop”.
While the designer made his products for sale online in a Japanese-language website in July, non-Japanese speakers were left out. On Thursday, the house debuted a global store bringing together products under the designer’s multiple lines.
That includes, Yohji Yamomoto Produce, which reproduces his signature hits; entry-level and web-only brand, S’YTE; the genderless Ground Y line; luxury accessories from discord Yohji Yamamoto; to casual wear offerings Yohji Yamamoto + NOIR, and Y’s. It will also sell LIMI feu, designed by his daughter Limi Yamamoto.
It marks the first time S’YTE and Ground Y have been offered outside of Japan thus far. The online store is capable of delivering to about 130 countries across the world.
For the time being, the digital side is geared towards the western consumer. The website is displayed in English with transactions in U.S. dollars via Visa, Mastercard or Paypal but the house said it plans to release an app in the early September, and a Chinese language web store later in the same month.

Marquee Brands Opens Second NYC BCBGMaxAzria Store

The new BCBGMaxAzria store at 77 Mercer Street in SoHo features the brand’s updated modern store concept and layout.
The space totals 5,200 square feet, and is large enough to house the full range of the brand’s extensive product offerings that include sportswear, dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry, as well as its new denim line.
Diane Bekhor, senior vice president of BCBG Group, said, “We are thrilled to open the new BCBGMaxAzria store in the heart of such an iconic New York neighborhood.” She added that the new SoHo store “represents our new store concept that is bold, contemporary and clean.”
It is the first store opening in Manhattan for the brand since it came under new ownership. Marquee Brands, a brand management firm, acquired the company last year. Global Brands Group has oversight of the new store location. The other BCBGMaxAzria Manhattan store is the original flagship store at 461 Fifth Avenue.
Cory Baker, chief operating officer, said, “Expanding our BCBGMaxAzria retail presence in New York City is a testament to the fashion-focused customer demand for this timeless brand and an exciting addition to our portfolio.”

Z Supply Enters Retail Fray With Fashion Island Store

Z Supply LLC has opened its first store with plans of growing its retail footprint over time.
The 1,362-square-foot temporary store at Fashion Island in Newport Beach carries the company’s namesake basics brand and is also set to be used to test categories from the line.
The assortment includes the women’s collection in addition to some pieces from the Z Supply men’s line. The company will also sell items from its Zoo Supply line for pets, which launched last year.
The Fashion Island pop-up is scheduled to be open for a period of three to six months.
Z Supply chief operating officer Heidi Muther called the timing right to look at retail, as the company follows the game plans of a number of born-online brands or businesses with traditional wholesale models exploring direct-to-consumer through physical retail in a bid to learn more about their respective consumer bases.

IVANKA READY FOR FALL: The Ivanka Trump brand will be opening a boutique in Trump Tower this fall, according to sources.
As for whether the label’s full selection — dresses, sportswear, shoes, handbags, jewelry and accessories — will be available remains to be seen. A spokeswoman for the company declined comment Friday about any specifics regarding square footage, the actual launch date and whether company president Abigail Klem is concerned that the store may appear to some to be a conflict of interest even though Ivanka has stepped away from the company.
Prior to her father’s inauguaration in January, Trump announced that she would give up her role running her fashion brand as well as her post as executive vice president of acquisitions and development at the Trump Organization. Her stepping back followed the appointment of her husband Jared Kushner in as a senior adviser to the Trump administration. At that time, her husband’s attorney Jamie S. Gorelick said in a statement issued to Vanity Fair that Trump would also “sell all of her common stock and restructure her participation in Trump Organization transactions so that she no longer benefits from the profits.”

POP APPEAL: Spanish designer Sybilla, who rose to fame in the Eighties, sure knows how to create buzz around her return to fashion. After unveiling her first collection since 1991 in Paris this March, the artisan of minimal, organic looks has already hosted temporary stores in Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona. In New York, Sybilla is set to open a pop-up outpost at 25 Mercer Street from Oct. 14 to 25.
The designer’s comeback collection for fall was picked up by a total of seven U.S. stores, including Blake in Chicago, If in New York and Mameg in Los Angeles, and a spokesman for the label said department stores could also be on the agenda for the colorful spring collection, which is showing in Paris until Oct. 5.

Fabiana Filippi Unveils London Store

LONDON CALLING: Italian luxury cashmere label Fabiana Filippi officially unveiled its first British store on London’s Conduit Street during London Fashion Week.
The 2,300-square-foot space stands at 42 Conduit Street and spans four floors of a grand Victorian town house. The Perugia, Italy-based label tapped Italian architect Nicola Quadri to design the store, which has a warm-yet-modern feel. In terms of furniture, the label has honed in on Scandinavian pieces, such as midcentury cherry wood coffee tables by Triva-NK; Sixties-era sofas and armchairs by Carl Malmsten and a Fifties brass and crystal chandelier designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson for Markaryd.
The store carries Fabiana Filippi’s entire collection of women’s wear, and is near Berluti, Vivienne Westwood, Moschino and Donna Karan on the street.
Mario Filippi Coccetta, founder and chief executive officer of Fabiana Filippi, said that while the label chose the Conduit Street location partly for its “proximity to Bond Street,” he liked that Conduit Street is “more intimate and relaxed.” He added that company’s London opening is part of its strategy to open stores in “the main European capitals.”
Earlier this year, the retailer opened units in Paris and Rome, adding to its boutiques elsewhere in France and Italy, and in Lithuania, Russia and Sweden.

Takashimaya to Open Watch Store

Takashimaya is upping its watch game. The Japanese department store retailer is preparing to open a 8,600-square-foot store dedicated exclusively to watches on Oct. 7. Called Takashimaya Watch Maison, the boutique will be located kitty corner from Takashimaya’s flagship in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo.
The new store is the first in a series of initiatives by Takashimaya that will  increase its sales floor area in the Nihonbashi area from about 538,200 square feet to about 667,350 square feet by the spring of 2019.
Takashimaya Watch Maison will sell products by over 80 brands, including Giorgio Armani, Omega, Seiko, Montblanc, Tag Heuer, Harry Winston, and Piaget.

On August 22, the Chicago Footaction Flagship Store implemented itself on 26-28 State Street to give a city already renown for its keen fashion sense a major boost. Whether you’re a citizen or tourist, a view of the Chicago skyline while purchasing kicks couldn’t heighten the experience that much better.

All of today’s top brands such as Nike, Air Jordan, adidas, Puma, Fairplay, American Stitch, Popular Demand, New Era, Timberland and more were made instantly available to consumers fingertips and given the nature of the threads on hand, it only made sense to nab a Hip-Hop star to signify the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Sunday was just as festive as Twista, GLC and Katie Got Bandz all put on for their hometown by making in-store appearances.

“We are proud to have opened our largest retail location to date in such a great city as Chicago,” said Ken Side, vice president, general manager for Footaction. “Our team is looking forward to being a part of the community, offering first-class service and bringing the best assortment of lifestyle and athletic brands to style-conscious Chicagoans.”

Michael Jordan Wins $8.9M Judgement Against Grocery Store Chain

Don’t mess with Michael Jordan’s brand or it will cost you. The Hall of Fame basketball won an $ 8.9M judgement against a grocery story chain that used his name without his permission back in 2009. 

Reports TMZ:

The now-defunct chain Dominick’s (owned by Safeway) was ordered to pay up BIG TIME after MJ argued that it ran an ad in Sports Illustrated advertising steaks with his iconic jersey number and an image that was VERY similar to his Jumpman logo. 

An attorney for Dominick’s said the chain shouldn’t have to pony up more than $ 126k … even though MJ had testified that he doesn’t do any media deals worth less than $ 10 million. 

In the end, the Chicago jury sided with #23 … awarding him $ 8.9 million. 

No worries if you think Air Jordan is being greedy. He plans to donate the money to charity.

“It was about honesty and integrity,” said Jordan via a statement. “I hope this case sends a clear message, both here in the United States and around the world, that I will continue to be vigilant about protecting my name and identity.”

Vetements’s inky hoodie or hirsute Simone Rocha brogues, hitting the shelves of a Nordstrom near you? It’s a reality that comes to pass tomorrow as the department megalith launches Space, a new, permanent series of stores-in-store and sibling e-shop from the mind of director of creative projects Olivia Kim. The mission is simple enough: to highlight industry youngbloods, some of the best and brightest, Marques ‘ Almeida, Isa Arfen, and Faustine Steinmetz among them. They’re balanced out by a handful of more established voices like Acne Studios and Anthony Vaccarello that might have previously slipped under the radar of Nordstrom’s customers.

It’s a big move for the Seattle-based company to bank on the tastes of its clientele for newer, more offbeat labels, but one that’s backed auspiciously by the success of Kim’s Pop-In@Nordstrom series. Earlier this month the retailer posted strong second-quarter sales (poised to hit $ 20 billion by the year 2020), in stark contrast to the generally bleak landscape of department stores.

We caught up with Kim to talk about curating Space, storytelling, and why novelty is the new normcore.

When did the idea for Space first crystallize?
February. It really came about quickly, and I think that’s the name of the game with things I’ve been working on here at Nordstrom. They’ve been about super-quick turnarounds, putting things out there, and trying to test and learn from them. I have a really small and nimble team that allows me to do that, and I think Pete [Nordstrom, the company’s copresident] has done a great job in snowplowing that path for me, to say, “Hey, do what you need to do and let’s try and put some things out there.”
 
What was the selection process like for the designers you’ve chosen to feature? Or was it just a matter of “this is what I want to be wearing now”?
There definitely was a selfish tone to all of it! I wanted to be able to buy them here at Nordstrom, but a lot of them were designers I had been following since the beginning, or had been friends with since they had launched their collections, like Marques ‘ Almeida and Simone Rocha. Then there was a good mix of brands that had been established for a while and they didn’t have really great distribution here in the States—they were being sold at a couple of boutiques around the country. There was no set criteria [though]; we didn’t want to check off a box. Space was really meant to be a platform to introduce our customers to another aspect of what designer fashion could be, this advanced and emerging designer world.

How did you present the idea to the designers? Did they have any initial reservations about the undertaking?
Once we started reaching out to all these designers and meeting them in market, it fell together so beautifully. As a company, we don’t have an awareness issue—everybody knows who Nordstrom is, and I think that these designers had a lot of respect for what we were doing in the retail landscape in America. For many of them, they loved the idea of working with us, but they were intimidated by how they could work with us. They imagined we were this really big company that had all these rules and regulations. With some of these smaller designers, there’s definitely a little bit of hand-holding that we’re excited about: helping them figure out how to ship internationally, invoice, or to work on payment terms—things like that, that are basic business practices for big stores. In a way I feel like it helps them understand the business of retail in a much easier way; we’ve been able to weed out all the unnecessary stuff. So part of it was really serving up Space to be a true boutique within our department stores, to say, “We can act like a boutique, we can work with you, we can find different ways of partnering with you that feel comfortable for you.” Once we got around that, it was really easy and everything just kind of fell into place.

What is your approach to presenting more avant-garde talents, like Faustine Steinmetz, in a context that will resonate with Nordstrom’s wide customer base?
I’ve discovered that [our customers] are the most curious and the most inquisitive out there. They want and they expect more from us, so being able to present a very boutique-like setting on our designer floor with the adjacency to designers they might be familiar with—the Célines and the Saint Laurents and the Givenchys—then having this dedicated space that’s focused around younger brands that we’re incubating and putting up on a platform, to say, “This is the next generation of what’s going to be big.” All the Space boutiques will have a dedicated salesperson to help educate our customers and give them information about why we’re doing what we’re doing. I think that’s going to be a huge thing for us—bringing our customer along on that journey.

In terms of the aesthetics of Space, what message did you most want to convey?
I wanted to convey that there was a really curated environment—that it wasn’t just about having a blank canvas and then putting some clothes out on a traditional department store floor, but that everything was really considered, the clothing and the accessories, [but] also the art, the furniture. That there were elements that we could call out that were also part of a fun experience, that it didn’t only have to be this endless sea of clothing.

What about the current retail landscape made now the right time to launch this project?
I think that as the world becomes smaller and smaller because of the Internet, and because everything feels a little bit more accessible, retailers are challenged to find ways to differentiate themselves from one another. For us, it felt like a really good time to be able to say, as a company that offers products from Uggs to Alaïa, that we could offer another segment of customers this emerging advanced designer world that often can feel under-penetrated inside of department stores and traditionally becomes more of a boutique business.

From a retail standpoint, what do you see as the chief influence on customers today? Is it celebrity? Is it street style?
I think that what’s influencing retailers—or at least what I’m being influenced by—is this really authentic, genuine sense of style that people are coming out with right now. There was normcore, and now I’m feeling like everything is coming back. It’s this idea of “I’m an individual and this is how I express myself.” That comes with the mixing of brands and adding elements of your own creativity to things. That’s what feels really modern and cool to me at the moment.

MSGM to Open Store in Dubai

TRIPLE PLAY: MSGM, the Italian contemporary fashion brand founded in 2009 by Massimo Giorgetti, is set to open its third monobrand store in August.
The new store, located in the Dubai Mall, will open Aug. 10 in collaboration with local partner BinHendi Enterprise. The unit, covering 1,076 square feet, will carry the brand’s men’s, women’s and accessories collections.
Giorgetti, who is also the creative director of the brand, conceived the store’s concept in collaboration with Italian architect studio CLS Architetti. The studio also worked on the MSGM store in Milan on Via Ponte Vetero in the arty Brera district.
Keeping the label’s street-style aesthetic, flexible iron structures are used to exhibit the products along black and white marble surfaces, which are broken up by fluorescent yellow lines. The boutique also features neon tubes in various geometric forms emerging from the ceiling.
The opening of the Dubai store is part of the brand’s retail expansion worldwide. The company’s third store is in Hong Kong.

Benefit Cosmetics Opens Dallas Store

PIONEERING TEXAS: The Lone Star State is the next target market for Benefit Cosmetics LLC.
“I think Texas in general is going to be a great market for us,” said Lisa Edwards, vice president of retail, at last month’s opening party for the Benefit store at The Plaza at Preston Center in Dallas. “We wanted to start with Dallas. It seems like such a beauty market.”
Located steps from a well-trafficked Sprinkles bakery and across from the Ylang 23 jewelry boutique, the 890-square-foot store is Benefit’s 27th nationwide. It offers brow waxing and threading, body waxing and spray tanning in addition to the full line. A division of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton since 1999, Benefit has 86 overseas stores as well as distribution in Macy’s, Sephora and Ulta.
Benefit targets a new U.S. market each year and then backfills locations in the major cities where it already has a presence for a total of six openings annually, Edwards explained. The company has another store on tap for summer at The Shops at Legacy in nearby Plano as well as units in Boston, Brooklyn, and two more in the New York area.

Maison Kitsuné Opens Largest Store Yet in Paris

HARDER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER: Maison Kitsuné is the latest brand to land in the red-hot Upper Marais district of Paris, with the opening of its largest store and café so far in the French capital.
The 2,150-square-foot split-level space on Boulevard des Filles du Calvaire features floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, ensuring there is permanent light in the space, which has been decorated with mineral touches reminiscent of the Memphis design movement and the paintings of David Hockney.
“The overall mood is soft. We definitely wanted a slightly Californian vibe,” said Gildas Loaëc, who cofounded the brand in 2002 with Masaya Kuroki.
The store, which sells men’s and women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, is the brand’s fourth in Paris, while the café is the third there to date — and the first to offer more than a handful of seats, with room for 35 people. Maison Kitsuné joins brands including Acne, Swildens, A.P.C. and Soeur on the fast-evolving thoroughfare.

Nike Opens First Community Store In Brooklyn [Photos]

All you have to do is look down whenever you’re in Flatbush, Brookyn to know Nike is a staple in the hood. But the brand takes things a step further by opening its first community store in the neighborhood. 

The new store—who design includes imagery from local photographer Anthony Blasko—opened today (May 28) near the corner of Nostrand and Flatbush Avenues borough claiming by the Notorious B.I.G, Jay Z, Mike Tyson and many more.

The “Community Store” concept aims to empower locals and their community and being deep in Flatbush was as good place as any to set up shop.

“Nike Community Stores are about neighborhood roots and community connection” said Dennis van Oossanen, Vice President of Nike’s North America Direct to Consumer business via a press release. “So when we looked for a location, we wanted a place that was instantly recognizable, that expressed the unique spirit of Flatbush and Brooklyn and that amplified the values of the Nike brand. We think we found the perfect spot.”

The store has already met its target of having 80% of its employees be from the neighborhood. Also, employees will actively participate in community service events and help local non-profit organizations. Already on the schedule are after-school programs, a Zoom League basketball program and the Honor Roll Skate Club middle school students.

Products from Nike running, training, basketball and sportswear—as well BK specific items—will be available for women, men and young athletes in the store.

Band of Outsiders will close its New York store “effectively at the end of June,” according to a sales associate.
The brand, which is reportedly in the process of shuttering its operations, will keep its SoHo boutique open for one more month to sell the remainder of its merchandise at reduced prices. The sales associate confirmed WWD’s Tuesday report that the label will not produce its fall collection.
Band of Outsiders revealed the news of its store sale on Instagram Thursday afternoon with a photo of a sign that read “Band Of Outsiders. Yes, we’re still open and we’re on sale!” The post’s caption read, “So, like, come and buy something. #70Wooster, #sale, #nocomment.” The latter hashtag was likely made in reference to Band of Outsiders founder Scott Sternberg’s silence amid an onset of reports that his label is ceasing operations. On Tuesday he told WWD, “Nobody knows anything at this point but me, and I’ve been advised not to comment at this time.”
But his staff is less careful. The Band of Outsiders sales associate said currently, “pretty much everything” at the label’s 70 Wooster Street boutique is on sale at up to 40 percent off — including the brand’s resort and spring collections. This
