Temperature’s Rising: superHERO

I don’t care what anyone says…the pop singers of the 90’s were far superior to whatever the hell the kids are listening to today. A greatest hits album of The Backstreet Boys shits all over anything that One Direction, Selena Gomez, or The Jonas Brothers have released. I’ll admit, if God put me in a cave and gave me 24 hours to think of the name of a song by either of these artists, I wouldn’t be able to. (I do remember that One Direction had a song a while back that was all over the radio, but I can’t even remember the name of it at the moment, honest to God). Why don’t I just Google it right now, you ask? Because my mother taught me not to waste time looking for waste. Whatever it was, I’m 100% sure it couldn’t hold “I Want It That Way’s” metaphorical jockstrap. Which, if you think about it, is the ultimate diss. Not a lot of people would want to hold another person’s jockstrap even if they really could carry it, but not being able to hold something that doesn’t really exist is the lowest of the low.

Honestly, the previous paragraph (or rant) is 1 degree away from being a non sequitur, or maybe less, as it doesn’t have all that much to do with superHero. But unlike a lot of 90’s babies, superHero definitely don’t take themselves too seriously, and their debut album, entitled The Middle, is reminiscent of Kidz In The Hall combined with Madvillian MF DOOM and a splash of Madlib during the Quasimoto days. I won’t lie, when I first saw the video of “Lifted,” I missed the dope music being played because I was so distracted by the outfits. However, these dudes, hailing from Hotlanta (the birthplace of some of the most unique acts of the genre) have skill. Stripped down lyricism with a few flashy frills, superHero has, appropriately enough, a superhero theme, with the duo never hesitating to sample from classic superhero movies and share their love of the genre. It makes for cinematic listening a la early Wu-Tang records, and adds a further degree of pizzazz to the duo’s arrangements.

Beyond the pizzazz effect (after all, what really is pizzazz?) superHero are brashly pushing the boundaries on what hip hop can be by ushering in an extra level of aggression to make their beats all the more engaging, and furthermore, inspiring. With The Middle, essentially, superHero have optimized their lyrical content and implementation of hooks to put together a package the world has yet to witness. There is something strangely gravitational about what superHero do on The Middle, making for some of the most enjoyable hip hop I’ve heard this year.

You can stream The Middle below:

As always, if you are feeling superHero, make sure to track their movements on the interwebs:

7 Ways to Be the Superhero of Your Divorce

We don’t want divorce to bring out the worst in us, but it has a way of doing just that. Before your own divorce, perhaps you looked at other divorcing couples with a critical eye. Or thought some version of, “I just don’t get what all the excitement’s about. It’s a divorce, people. Keep it together.” You did this because you had absolutely no idea what it meant to divorce until, well, you did. And now you wonder how you’ll ever get through this. One way is to summon your inner superhero (yes, you have one) to help you navigate these choppy waters and guide you to saner land.

Start by giving your divorce superhero a name: Resilient Rita or Strong Sam will do. Then, when you’re tempted to crumble into a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, or send that scathing email to your in-laws, or tell your ex you never, ever loved him/her, ask what your superhero would do. Because your superhero (who is, in essence, your best self) makes better, clearer decisions than you — and, with some focus and effort, will swoop you up and save you from plunging into the burning detritus of divorce.

Here are ways to be the superhero of your divorce:

1) Protect the innocents. Your kids don’t need to know what uglies transpired between their parents. Instead, decide together on the party line and then stick to it. “We’ve been unhappy for a long time,” or “We’ve done everything we can and we still can’t make it work,” should suffice. It’s tempting to paint their other parent as a schmuck, but this will ultimately make you the villain. Kids will resent the parent who tried to poison them against the other one because, as they grow into adults, they realize it takes two to tango. Eventually, they will be embittered by your lack of appropriateness and failure to shield them from grownup-only business.

2) Be careful and fair in your dealings. It’s tempting to rush through a divorce especially when the marriage has long been in decline. Instead, take a breath and slow down. A couple more months will not end you. Negotiate in good faith. When you’re ready to sign, have other eyes on your agreement. If you can, have another divorce lawyer or mediator do a second read-through. Or ask a smart, divorced friend to take a peek. Treat your divorce like a serious medical diagnosis. Wouldn’t you get a second opinion even if you trusted your physician?

3) Stick with your superhero friends. The whole neighborhood shouldn’t know the dirty details of your split. And, remember, there are parents out there who may not be so careful when gossiping about your divorce in front of their own kids. Don’t tell anyone you don’t completely trust with anything you wouldn’t want your kids to find out. Little pitchers have big ears, and you never want to hear from your kids, “Well, Ashley’s mom said you and dad divorced because…”

4) Don’t re-wreak havoc. Very few marriages end peacefully. There may be awful fights, affairs, or addictions involved. There may be threats lobbed about money and/or the kids. People say lots of crazy stuff during this time. Try not to join their ranks. And don’t keep replaying (and retelling) the worst details of your spouse’s behaviors. You already know how they made you feel. Why rip the bandaid off countless times over? You know this isn’t healthy. And it doesn’t change a thing.

5) Stay the course. Or discover a better one. This probably isn’t the time to quit a good job or move if you can help it. Divorce is a big enough change. Give yourself — and your kids — a chance to adjust. Conversely, if the stress of divorce has you in an awful eating/drinking/not exercising slump, it’s time to be the superhero of your well-being and make positive changes.

6) Tell the truth, the whole truth. Have you ever heard of a superhero who didn’t? It’s so easy to place the blame fully on your ex-spouse. But, if you haven’t noticed, that’s really not making you feel any better. Instead, tell yourself the real story of the marriage, the one in which you also had a starring role. The goal here is to understand yourself in relationships. If you’re not honest with yourself now, you will take that same oblivious person (you!) into another relationship which will also likely fail.

7) Build a superhero legacy. The chaotic phase of divorce will pass, although it may not seem that way right now. How do you want to remember your behaviors during this difficult time? How do you want your children, friends, and family to remember how you managed this transition? Feel all the feelings but manage them appropriately. Maintain your dignity and your self-respect. Save yourself and those you love from future embarrassment and pain. Because that’s what superheroes do.

Ava DuVernay Tweets Her Support For Real-Life ‘Black Superhero’ Bree Newsome

Ava DuVernay knows a black superhero when she sees one.

On Saturday, the “Selma” director wrote a tweet to express her support for 30-year-old activist Bree Newsome. Newsome was arrested earlier that morning after she scaled the 30-foot flag pole outside of the South Carolina statehouse and removed the Confederate flag.

DuVernay is among a growing list of supporters who hail Newsome as a hero for taking a stand and speaking out against her intolerance of the flag. Filmmaker Michael Moore even offered to pay Newsome’s legal fees and North Carolina NAACP President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II compared her to iconic civil rights activist Rosa Parks.

Newsome is reportedly charged with a misdemeanor for defacing monuments on state Capitol grounds, an offense that carries a fine of up to $ 5,000 and a prison term of up to three years, according to the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, DuVernay, who is rumored to take on Marvel’s “Black Panther” movie, has yet to officially comment on her net move. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the film studio has met with DuVernay and is also in talks with other directors for the project.

Despite the rumors, one thing is clear: If DuVernay doesn’t produce a film on Black Panther, at least she has inspiration for another black superhero.

(Ava DuVernay did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.)

Wrestler (And Real-Life Superhero) John Cena Honors Young Fan Battling Cancer

John Cena may not have real super powers, but the WWE wrestler is known for his ability to make dreams come true.

Last year, the 38-year-old became the first celebrity to grant 400 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I think it boils down to the fact that John connects with children in a really special way,” a spokesperson for Make-A-Wish told Yahoo! News at the time.

On Monday night’s episode of “WWE Raw,” Cena showed off his wish-granting powers yet again when he honored a young wrestling fan who is battling cancer.

Cena, the current WWE United States Champion, was facing off with Kevin Owens when he spotted the youngster in the audience. The child was carrying an “I’m Beating Cancer” sign.

“If I … say the words ‘never give up,’ not only am I telling the truth, I am encouraging young and old, all alike, like that person right there, to do the exact same thing,” Cena said, pointing out the kid.

Later, once the taping of the show was over, the wrestler went into the audience and ushered the youngster into the wrestling ring.

The look of incredulity on the kid’s face says it all.

Marvel Reportedly Wants Ava DuVernay To Direct Superhero Movie

Director Ava DuVernay may be headed to Marvel.

The studio is considering DuVernay, nominated for a Best Director Golden Globe for “Selma,” for an upcoming superhero film, according to The Wrap. Marvel apparently wants DuVernay to direct either “Black Panther” or “Captain Marvel,” both due out in 2018. She would be the first black woman to direct a major superhero movie.

HitFix in February asked DuVernay if she had any interest in directing a Marvel film. She responded with a laugh and said, “I’m not a big comic book fan, but I know I love to deconstruct heroes, deconstruct myths. I probably want to do some origin story.” DuVernay admitted that she didn’t know much about Marvel’s properties, but added, “everything is possible.”

The Wrap’s report comes as the American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday called for an investigation into what it called Hollywood’s “systemic failure” to hire female directors. Ariela Migdal, a senior attorney with the ACLU Women’s Rights Project, said the failure to hire women directors is “a pretty solid sign there’s discrimination going on.”

It’s worth noting that Patty Jenkins will be the first female director on a major superhero movie. Jenkins, who was originally optioned to direct “Thor: The Dark World,” is directing the upcoming “Wonder Woman” film.

Reps for Marvel and DuVernay weren’t immediately available for comment.

For more, head to The Wrap.

Spider-Gwen Lives! Spider-Man’s Dead Girlfriend Is A Kick-Ass Superhero Now

It’s been 42 years since Spider-Man’s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, died in the final pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #121 — a death that changed comic book history forever and was quite possibly Marvel’s first admission that superheroes can’t save everyone.

But what if she wasn’t dead? What if, in an alternate universe, Peter Parker died and Gwen Stacy became a badass superhero with all of Spider-Man’s powers and a heck of a lot more angst?

Behold: Spider-Gwen.

Spider-Gwen Exclusive Preview

Spider-Gwen #1 hit the shelves on Wednesday, satisfying a longtime demand for a spinoff that establishes Gwen as a superhero, Kotaku reports.

READ USA TODAY’S IN-DEPTH REPORT ON SPIDER-GWEN

“It’s a rare character that gets the public outcry that Spider-Gwen got,” senior editor Nick Lowe said before the book’s release. “From the sell-out of Gwen’s first appearance to the groundswell on Twitter we’re excited to bring more Spider-Gwen into the world with the creators who started it all!”

To be sure, the Internet has already fallen in love with the new heroine. Some are just happy to have a strong female lead in the Spider-verse. Kotaku and IGN give a lot of credit to the character design, focusing on her cool new duds:

“The enthusiastic reaction to Spider-Gwen is due in part to a great character design. Her costume — which brilliantly fuses negative space ideas, high-contrast coloring and could-actually-exist practicality — is one of the best riffs on the Spider-Man motif in decades.”

The first issue is certainly receiving good reviews, but its success remains to be seen. Is Spider-Man out? Is Spider-Gwen the new hotness? Will Emma Stone play her when the movie inevitably comes out?

Only time will tell.
