GOAT Establishes $ 1 million Fund To Support Social Justice Efforts

Source: GOAT / GOAT

In the wake of George Floyd’s death and protests taking place across the nation and around the globe, companies are stepping up in the fight against racial and social injustice.

Online sneaker marketplace GOAT, is the latest company to announce it will become an ally in that fight. Yesterday (Jun.6), it announced it will be “establishing a $ 1 million fund to support social justice efforts and plan to contribute to this fund over time.”

For its first donation, GOAT announced it would be donating “$ 100,000 donation has been made to The Underground Museum in Los Angeles to support Black artists and to The Bail Project to support protesters demanding change.”

The company announced its epic move on Instagram stating in the caption:

“Over the last week, we’ve taken a step back from our business to reflect on the role we play in the fight against social and racial injustices. We looked closely at what it means to be truly and actively supportive of the Black community, and the real steps necessary to impact change.”

“Today, we’re establishing a $ 1 million fund to support social justice efforts and plan to contribute to this fund over time. These proceeds will be used to support national organizations and local causes in our community. The first $ 100,000 donation has been made to The Underground Museum in Los Angeles to support Black artists and to The Bail Project to support protesters demanding change.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“As a company, we have the privilege and responsibility to be a part of the solution. We must continue to advocate and move forward in this fight, devoting our time, energy, and resources to support change. We will show up, speak up, and encourage dialogue, and we will keep our ears and our hearts open to our employees as well as to our community.”

Salt Life Launched a New T-Shirt to Support Hurricane Dorian Relief Efforts in the Bahamas

Last week, Hurricane Dorian roared through the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm, bringing storm surge and winds in excess of 200 miles per hour that caused widespread destruction, especially on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama.

Now, rescue and recovery efforts are underway. Salt Life, maker of ocean-ready activewear, is offering a way for you to help out, too. The company has created a Bahamas Dawn Tee, and for every shirt sold, Salt Life will donate $ 14 to the American Red Cross, which is assisting with hurricane relief efforts.

Real Heroes: This Stuntman Helps Save Horses From California Wildfires

Salt Life will donate money to the Red Cross for every shirt sold until the end of October. The shirt retails for $ 20, and it features a large graphic on the back inspired by the Bahamian flag and one of the island nation’s claims to fame—excellent fishing. It’s made from pre-shrunk cotton and features a pocket on the front as well.

The Last Voyage of the SS El Faro

According to The New York Times, 44 people died in the Bahamas as a result of the storm, but the number is likely to rise as more bodies are recovered from the rubble. Houses were torn apart by the winds and inundated with flood waters, and shantytowns in the Abaco Islands were among the hardest hit areas.

You can also make an additional donation to the Red Cross relief efforts here.

International Talent Support Contest Names 2019 Winners

TRIESTE, Italy — International Talent Support continues to highlight creativity in its purest form.
The 17th edition of the event aimed at promoting the next generation of designers and offering them financial support, as well as publicity, named its winners on Friday night here asking the more than 800 applicants to develop “sincerely true” collections, sticking to their own vision.
The contest returned last year after a one-year hiatus and the newly found enthusiasm pushed Barbara Franchin, founder and director of the competition, to raise the bar higher.
On Friday night, an international jury gathered at the Magazzino 42 venue, a former warehouse on one of the Italian city’s many piers, to evaluate the works of the 22 finalists. The projects included fashion, accessories and jewelry. Collections were showcased with a runway show, while the other projects were displayed through a dedicated exhibition.
Retracing the history of ITS, Franchin noted young talents have changed over the years in terms of age, origin and approach to the industry. To wit, half of the finalists this year came from the Asia-Pacific region and Franchin said the talents are “much more self-conscious today. They are more focused and straightforward as they look for their identity, without necessarily

Gucci to Support Fast Company’s First European Innovation Festival

MILAN — “How do you live in an age of bewilderment, when the old stories have collapsed, and no new story has yet emerged to replace them?” This is one of the questions historian and author Yuval Noah Harari asks in his 2018 book “21 Lessons for the 21st Century” and which sparks a conversation on how technology is shaping and changing our society. It is not surprising then that Harari is one of the speakers of the first European Innovation Festival, staged by media brand Fast Company and for the first time supported by Gucci.
Held between Milan and Florence July 9-11, “The Dawn of Superintelligence” will highlight the potential for collaboration between man and machine. Technological advancement and artificial intelligence bring both opportunities and challenges by combining computer science and human sensibility, and the festival was hailed as key in helping to discuss a topic stirring more questions than providing answers, said Marco Bizzarri, president and chief executive officer of Gucci, in an interview with WWD.
“The topic is of the moment, the use of data, intelligent machines and how they can change the future. The effect that all this can have on jobs, what does it mean, will machines

Parsons Paris Forms Advisory Board to Support Ambitious Growth Plan

Parsons Paris, the European campus of The New School’s  Parsons School of Design, said Friday that it has formed an advisory board to provide guidance to university leadership on strategy and growth opportunities, help shape innovative programming and enhance the school’s reputation throughout the world.
Peter Price, chairman and chief executive officer of Premiere Previews and a former trustee of The New School, will chair the advisory board.

The advisory board will hold its inaugural meeting on May 15 to coincide with the school’s annual year-end fashion show.

Faherty Creates Capsule to Support LGBTQ Community

Faherty is in the giving spirit this holiday season.
The New York-based casualwear brand has created a new women’s collection, the Rainbow capsule, and will donate 10 percent of sales to The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth.
The collection, which will be available starting Monday, consists of a sweater poncho for $ 269, a pom beanie for $ 78 and a cotton-acrylic scarf for $ 118.
To promote the initiative, Faherty will team with Brooklyn-based fashion blogger Allison Graham of “She Does Him,” who will produce and share a campaign featuring the Rainbow capsule with more than 27,000 of her followers.

“When we designed the Rainbow Sweater Poncho and matching beanie and scarf for our holiday collection, its bright colors and cozy softness evoked in us the warm and fuzzy feeling of the holidays,” said Faherty president Kerry Faherty. “But we also know the holidays can bring up feelings of sadness and loneliness for many. We reached out to The Trevor Project to set up a partnership and donate a portion of our Rainbow Collection sales to the organization. We’re deeply inspired by and grateful for the organization’s incredible efforts in the LGBTQ community and we’re honored to support them during

Rick Ross Is On Life Support, Admitted To Cardiac Unit: Report

Rick Ross

Source: Derrick Salters-WENN / WENN

Earlier today we reported that Rick Ross was hospitalized after being found unresponsive while breathing heavily in his Miami home, and now TMZis reporting that Ross has been admitted to the cardiac unit where he’s been hooked up to a machine that’s taken over the function of his heart and lungs.

We’re told doctors have put him on something called ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It’s a technique used to oxygenate his blood outside of his body, before it’s pumped back into his body.

It’s essentially a form of life support, and a clear sign of how dire Rick’s situation is right now.

This is truly disheartening news especially given the fact that Ross has been working hard to slim down and get into better health.

However, according to Fat Trel the Bawse isn’t on life support.

Latin America Steps Up Support for Local Fashion Weeks

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Camila Ortega, the daughter of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, launched Nicaragua Disena in 2011 to help promote the country’s poor yet talented emerging designers. But what started as a pet project has become a growing event drawing 12,000 people, providing regional designers with a promotion platform and attracting international design schools.
The event’s popularity (the government was said to invest $ 100,000 in the 2015 edition that closed last weekend) comes as other fashion weeks are mushrooming in Central America, with Panama and Costa Rica hosting large events under the Mercedes-Benz banner and El Salvador and Guatemala developing their own iterations.
“We want to bring this to a higher level and become the leading design platform in Central America,” said Ortega, 27. As Nicaragua Design director, Ortega has a modeling hobby and walked several runways in a 30-piece lineup, including local designers Shantall Lacayo and Erick Bendana, as well as Argentina’s Paula Tierra and Venezuela’s Carmela Osorio.
While the event will remain a fashion design platform, it will also seek to promote talent in other areas, including interior design, film, craftsmanship and arts, Ortega said. This year there were 88 designers and 75 stands, compared with 75 and 50, respectively, in 2014.

How LGBT History Can Inspire Hope, Support Health, and Even Prevent HIV

“A people deserves a history.”

That’s how Larry Kramer–Tony and Emmy-winning playwright, author, and America’s best-known HIV/AIDS activist–spoke about the just-released first volume of his two-volume novel The American People. Kramer has labored over the book for decades, fine-tuning his sometimes fanciful American history from a gay point of view.

“I want every gay person to be aware of our history,” Kramer told me, “whether or not I’ve fictionalized it.”

He added, “You should know your history. I want gay history taught in schools. And they don’t teach it.”

I interviewed Kramer in his Manhattan apartment on July 29 for the Los Angeles Review of Books and for my forthcoming book about building gay men’s resilience.

Being familiar with, and drawing inspiration from, our history as LGBT people can contribute tremendously to our personal resilience.

We are heirs of what I call “LGBT America’s heroic legacy,” the acts and words of men and women who chose to stand up for their humanity, integrity, and fully equal American citizenship–rather than accept the shame and silence they were told was their lot in life for being “different.”

They often paid a steep price: Diagnosed by psychiatrists as mentally ill because they weren’t heterosexual. Condemned by religious institutions. Disowned by families. Even left to fend for themselves in the face of a terrifying new disease called AIDS.

Before President Ronald Reagan’s health department in 1982 declared AIDS the nation’s “number one health priority,” Larry Kramer and five other gay men in New York began raising money for research and formed Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the world’s first–and still largest–organization to advocate and care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Nursing homes, used to caring for elderly patients, were not prepared in the early eighties (or today) to care for young men in their twenties, thirties, and forties. So gay men and their friends created from scratch a parallel network of health care and social service organizations, like GMHC, to care for their own.

Back then advocacy included arguing with ambulance drivers to take deathly sick people with AIDS–mainly gay men–to the hospital. Care meant doing errands and arranging doctor visits for clients who were terminally ill, at some stage of cancer, dementia, or pneumocystis pneumonia.

By the end of 2011, HIV/AIDS had already killed an estimated 311,087 gay and bisexual American men. Fifty-seven percent of the estimated 500,022 persons living with an HIV diagnosis at the time were gay and bisexual men.

Two-thirds of all Americans living with HIV, and newly infected each year, are still gay and bisexual men–even though we account for only an estimated two percent of the population. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Black gay and bisexual men accounted for the largest number of new infections (10,600, or 36 percent) in 2010. Among them, young black males between age 13 to 24 made up nearly half the total–a 20 percent increase from 2008.

For any of us who lived through the dark years of the 1980s–and particularly for those of us living with HIV, including myself–despair can seem a natural response to numbers like these.

They certainly make one thing very clear: America is still failing to stop the spread of HIV and is far from achieving the ‘AIDS-free generation’ envisioned by the Obama administration.

As I examine HIV prevention education aimed at gay and bisexual men for my new book, one thing is clear: to work, prevention education must go beyond PrEP and condoms. It has to address the drivers of risk behavior–the feelings and needs in our hearts and minds that compel us to engage in sex the way we do, even to attribute meaning to particular sexual acts.

Earlier prevention efforts, growing out of a desperate wish to arrest the spread of HIV as quickly as possible, were based on a “deficit” model. They told us simply “use a condom every time.” No questions asked. They assumed we couldn’t be trusted to make healthy choices based on factual information, and frequently invoked fear to douse our libidos.

Newer efforts, in contrast, draw upon what is referred to as a “strength-based” or “resilience-based” model, aimed at strengthening our confidence, pride and resilience.

Starting from a place of respect and validation, these interventions work essentially to build hope. Their premise is simple, really: Men who are hopeful about their future will naturally want to protect themselves to be here for it and healthy enough to enjoy it.

“You’ve got to give them hope,” is how Harvey Milk, America’s first openly gay elected official, put it in a 1978 speech. Milk understood that inspiring hope in a gay boy’s heart could mean the difference between a happy future–and suicide.

In this LGBT History Month, claiming as our own the powerful legacy of people like Harvey Milk and Larry Kramer, who stood up and now stand out in our history, offers a powerful source of hope and resilience, a solid foundation for HIV prevention and for good health.

Vatican: Pope’s Meeting With Kim Davis ‘Not A Form Of Support’

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican said Friday that Pope Francis’ meeting with Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who went to jail for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses, “should not be considered a form of support of her position.”

After days of confusion, the Vatican issued a statement Friday clarifying Francis’ Sept. 24 meeting with Davis, an Apostolic Christian who has become a focal point in the gay marriage debate in the U.S.

In a statement, the Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said Francis met with “several dozen” people at the Vatican’s embassy just before leaving Washington for New York.

Lombardi said such meetings are due to the pope’s “kindness and availability” and that the pope only really had one “audience” with former students and his family members.

“The pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects,” Lombardi said.

Davis, a Rowan County, Kentucky clerk, spent five days in jail for defying a series of federal court orders to issue same-sex marriage licenses. She said earlier this week that she and her husband met briefly with the pope at the Vatican’s nunciature in Washington and that he encouraged her to “stay strong.”

The audience sent shockwaves through the U.S. church, prompting questions about whether the pope had been duped into meeting with her and whether he truly knew the details of her case, which has polarized the country.

Initially the Vatican only reluctantly confirmed the meeting but offered no comment.

On Friday, Lombardi issued a fuller statement to “contribute to an objective understanding of what transpired.”

Francis did not focus on the debate over same-sex marriage during his visit last week. As he left the country, he told reporters who inquired that he did not know Davis’ case in detail, but he defended conscientious objection as a human right.

“It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right,” Francis said.

Trick Daddy Files For Bankruptcy Over Child Support

Trick Daddy loves the kids, but the rapper says his child support has forced him to file Chapter 11.

The Miami rapper claims he owes $ 34,837 child support to one of his kids’ mothers, $ 22,282 to another one,  $ 290k in back taxes, and is $ 280k in arrears on his first mortgage. The Eata Booty rapper said that he had $ 430k in assets but his debt is somewhere around $ 645k.

Trick Daddy still manages to rake in roughly $ 14,500 a month in publishing and public appearances, according to TMZ.

He claims to have about $ 550 worth of clothing and jewelry.

The Whole Cyrus Family Hits The VMAs To Support Hostess With The Mostess, Miley

The Cyrus clan stepped out in full support of Miley on Sunday night as she geared up to host the MTV Video Music Awards.

Parents Tish and Billy Ray and siblings Braison, Noah and Brandi were on hand as Miley took to the red carpet. Of course, the 22-year-old stole the spotlight as she showed up for the pre-show in metallic suspenders, over-the-knee boots and, well, not much else.

Miley thanked her family for supporting her during her opening monologue, warning the crowd, “if it’s anything like Christmas, be prepared for a fistfight.”

How One Man Gamed Instagram To Show Support For #FreeTheNipple

James Shamsi is on a mission to free the nipple on Instagram — or at least point out the social platform’s murky policies when it comes to “acceptable” nudity. Like many women (and a few good men) before him, Shamsi noticed the double standard applied to men and women’s nipples on Instagram. Namely, women’s nipples are censored, while men’s are not.

“I realized the absurdity in the over-sexualization of the female nipple,” Shamsi told The Huffington Post via email. “I wanted to show Instagram just how silly their own policies were by showing them how easily male nipples could be interpreted as female — and with the greater aim of highlighting the fact that the only real difference [between men’s and women’s nipples] are the weighting we choose to give to female nipples according to labels we arbitrarily assign to them as a society.”

To test out Instagram’s policies, Shamsi posted the below, cropped photograph of a man’s chest on Instagram.

Since the nipples look as though they could be those of a woman, he suspected that if reported, Instagram would remove the image. He even asked his Facebook friends to report the image so he could test his theory.

⛔⛔⛔ PLEASE REPORT ME (Insta: @jamesshamsi) ⛔⛔⛔I'm doing an experiment on my Instagram (@jamesshamsi).For those of you…

Posted by James Samir Shamsi on Tuesday, August 18, 2015

Unsurprisingly, it worked. Instagram removed the image for being in violation of its Community Guidelines a few hours after it was posted. Shamsi then contacted Instagram, alerting them that the chest they had censored was actually a man’s. Soon after, the post was reinstated. “Instagram reinstated the photo because these were male #facepalm,” Shamsi wrote in a subsequent Instagram post (below).

Shamsi’s nipple experiment follows a similar campaign first started by Associate Professor Micol Hebron in June 2014. She brilliantly suggested that women simply paste male nipples over their own scandalous lady ones. Problem solved!

TBT to that time, over a year ago (June 2014) that I posted an image of male nipple and told everyone to put it over…

Posted by Micol Hebron on Friday, July 3, 2015

Instagram seems to realize that creating guidelines for nudity is a seriously fraught process. In a statement to The Daily Dot regarding Shamsi’s photograph, an Instagram spokesperson said:

Standards around nudity vary greatly by culture, country, age, and other factors. Our goal has always been to find a balance between enabling people to express themselves, while also making sure that our large, diverse, global community feels comfortable. Striking the right balance is hard — and examples like this highlight the complexity of this issue. As always, we continue to analyze our policies to make sure that we’re listening to people and meeting the needs of our global community.

In January, Instagram told The Huffington Post that they “recognize that we don’t always get it right” when it comes to nudity on the platform. It looks like they are still grappling with where to draw the line.

Sports News in Brief: Hazed NFL Rookie Forced To Pay For Rest Of Team’s Child Support

CINCINNATI—Complaining that his teammates had taken their rookie hazing rituals too far, Bengals first-year linebacker Adam Rothwell revealed to reporters Thursday that he was recently forced to pay for the rest of his team’s child support. “We’re all out having a good time, and then all of a sudden I noticed everyone was gone, and I was left with all these court-ordered child support payments to take care of,” said Rothwell, adding that, including the three months of back child support that several teammates threw in at the last minute, he was on the hook for nearly $ 150,000. “I get that it’s a tradition and all, but some of those guys really went overboard. I mean, this is practically my whole signing bonus.” Reached for comment, an anonymous Bengals player claimed that Rothwell’s hazing was “nothing compared to the old days,” when rookies were …

Kardashian-Jenner Sisters Support Caitlyn Jenner At The ESPY Awards

Kendall and Kylie Jenner sparkled on the red carpet at the 2015 ESPY Awards on Wednesday night, but the evening was not about them.

The Jenner sisters attended the award show to support and celebrate their parent Caitlyn Jenner, who is set to receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, which is given to those “possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost.”

The 65-year-old former Olympian opted not to walk the red carpet, as a rep for the star explained to Gossip Cop, “It’s not about the press coverage. It’s an award for courage.”

Also in attendance and showing their support for Jenner, were stepdaughters Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian, who made the very uncharacteristic decision not to walk the red carpet, either. However, Kim’s hairstylist, Chris McMillan shared a sneak peek photo of the reality star’s look for the evening on Instagram.

Jenner’s sons Burt, Brandon, Brody and daughter Casey from her previous marriages also showed up in celebration of Jenner’s award:

It was truly a family affair, as Jenner’s 88-year-old mother Esther sat next to the star before she accepted her award.

The former athlete first came out as transgender in an interview with Diane Sawyer in April and formally introduced herself as Caitlyn to the world this past June with with a 22-page Vanity Fair cover story. Since that glamorous and inspiration introduction, Jenner has started her foray into advocacy work in the transgender community

Support Greece: Visit One of These Stunning Properties

Photo: Courtesy of Airbnb

Even with news that Greece reached a deal with its European creditors today, the country still remains in the midst of one of its most dramatic junctures in recent history, leaving some would-be travelers wary of making the trip. For a country where tourism represents 18 percent of GDP, this only compounds an already precarious situation.

But experts say that while some advance planning is necessary to ensure a smooth trip—pay ahead as much as possible, bring extra cash (and store it in the hotel safe), and consider insuring your trip—traveling to Greece now not only supports the local economy, but the odds of finding a particularly stunning property, even on short notice, are good. And the goods are quite remarkable. Case in point: ten Airbnb properties—including a cave in Santorini—that must be seen to be believed.

Nas’ Baby Mama Carmen Bryan Reportedly Homeless After Child Support Went Deadmatic

Carmen Bryan, Nas’ baby mama, just very well may be the new poster child for the age-old child support debate.

As it stands, her 2007 tell-all book, From Nas to Jay-Z, from Seduction to Scandal–a Hip-Hop Helen of Troy Tells All, is old news and Mona Scott-Young apparently hasn’t worked out a deal beneficial for the both of them.

According to Bossip, Nas’ baby mama hasn’t had a stable living situation since Destiny Jones turned 18-years-old and the child support checks stopped being her backbone.

Reports Bossip:

Nas’s first baby’s mother Carmen Bryan is homeless. Carmen has been homeless since last summer when Nas stop sending her monthly support checks. He continued to send her support checks after their child was eighteen and she believed that he would send them forever since she was the mother of his child. After she decided to put lies out about him on social media he cut her off. She has never spent a dime out of her own pocket to support her daughter because except writing a tell all book, she has not had a J-O-B since giving birth.

She’s been here in Queens all year squatting from house to house telling old stories from the late 90’s. When she wears out her welcome she gets buddy passes to mooch off of people in LA and Atlanta.

Of course, Ms. Carmen Bryan wasn’t about to let the rumors go without a response and she posted this photo to let the world the know she had the rent money if she didn’t have anything to actually rent.

10 Key Questions for Caring Co-Parents to Support the Kids You Love!

Divorced parents face challenges that are not only complex; they are long lasting as well. There are many variations of joint parenting, co-parenting and other forms of divorced parenting based on how well both parents get along, their geographical proximity, the age of the children and other contributing factors. Every decision made will affect the children involved — and the impact can be detected in children’s behavior, attitudes and levels of self-esteem.

To help parents co-parent more effectively I’ve created a list of significant questions to ask yourselves. I share these during mentoring sessions with parents not only before, but long after the divorce as well. If you sit together and discuss these questions, or review them during mediation, it can help you avoid serious mistakes and unnecessary strife now and well into the future.

The more honest you are with yourself and your former spouse, the easier for your children to move on after divorce into their new reality. If your co-parent doesn’t want to cooperate with you in answering these questions, there’s still value in answering by yourself and reflecting on the consequences for your children when you choose conflict over cooperation with your ex.

1. How can we make life better for our children after the divorce than it was before?

2. What can we do to boost their sense of security, self-esteem and well being during the transitions ahead?

3. Will our children respect us when they’re adults for the way we handled the divorce?

4. How can we best support our children – and minimize the physical, emotional and spiritual damage inflicted upon them as a result of our divorce?

5. Who can provide the best home environment for the children – and for what percent of each day, week, month and year? Can we be flexible as the kids age and change stages in life?

6. Am I burdening my children with responsibilities only an adult should have to bear?

7. Would I make this same parenting decision if we were still married — or am I allowing my anger/hatred/resentment/pain to affect my judgment and clarity?

8. How can we show our love and compassion for our children as they move through challenges they did not ask for — or create?

9. Do I want to rob my children of their childhood because of my divorce?

10. How can each of us best contribute our assets — physical, emotional and spiritual — to create harmony, good will and a sense of peace within the family structure?

And last, but most important of all …

Do I love my kids more than I may dislike or hate my Ex?

With these questions as guidelines, you are on a straight path to creating a child-centered divorce — one that respects your children’s rights through cooperative, respectful joint parenting.

It may not be the easiest path, but it will generate the best outcome for everyone in the family. And, one day, when your kids are grown adults, they will THANK YOU for doing your divorce right!

Ava DuVernay Tweets Her Support For Real-Life ‘Black Superhero’ Bree Newsome

Ava DuVernay knows a black superhero when she sees one.

On Saturday, the “Selma” director wrote a tweet to express her support for 30-year-old activist Bree Newsome. Newsome was arrested earlier that morning after she scaled the 30-foot flag pole outside of the South Carolina statehouse and removed the Confederate flag.

DuVernay is among a growing list of supporters who hail Newsome as a hero for taking a stand and speaking out against her intolerance of the flag. Filmmaker Michael Moore even offered to pay Newsome’s legal fees and North Carolina NAACP President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II compared her to iconic civil rights activist Rosa Parks.

Newsome is reportedly charged with a misdemeanor for defacing monuments on state Capitol grounds, an offense that carries a fine of up to $ 5,000 and a prison term of up to three years, according to the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, DuVernay, who is rumored to take on Marvel’s “Black Panther” movie, has yet to officially comment on her net move. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the film studio has met with DuVernay and is also in talks with other directors for the project.

Despite the rumors, one thing is clear: If DuVernay doesn’t produce a film on Black Panther, at least she has inspiration for another black superhero.

(Ava DuVernay did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.)

News in Brief: Black Man In Support Of Confederate Flag Triples His Media Appearance Rates

COLUMBIA, SC—Saying that his services had never been more in demand, Andrew Lewis, a local black man who supports flying the Confederate flag, announced plans Monday to triple his media appearance rates. “My phone’s been ringing off the hook the past few days, so I decided I’m not doing a spot for anything less than $ 1,500,” said Lewis, citing the numerous requests from news outlets for an African American who is willing to appear on television for three to five minutes and articulate why displaying the Confederate flag is an important symbol of states’ rights and standing up to the federal government. “I’m booked solid through Wednesday for one-on-ones and roundtable panels where I describe the flag as an important part of my state’s rich heritage, but I’d find a way to squeeze in a few more if the price was right. She ‘Couldn’t Support Herself’ At 43. Now She’s A Force To Be Reckoned With.

This Is Divorce At… is a HuffPost Divorce series delving into divorce at every stage of life. Want to share your experience of divorcing at a certain age? Email us at divorce@huffingtonpost.com or tweet @HuffPost Divorce.

On their 25th anniversary, Wendy Mooney and her husband renewed their vows. By their 26th anniversary, they were separated.

“I felt totally blindsided. It’s taken years for me to reinvent my life,” she said of her separation at 43.

Today, she’s more successful than she ever could have imagined during her married days. Below, she tells The Huffington Post how she reinvented herself after being sidelined by divorce.

After 26 years of marriage, I learned that the man I loved, trusted and deeply believed in had betrayed me. He said he wanted to “experience other women.” Turns out, he only wanted to experience one particular woman he had gotten close to that year.

Our love story was simple up until that point: I fell in love with him when I was just 16. We were sophomores in high school. I found myself pregnant after our junior year ended. Not for a moment did I believe our decision to marry had anything to do with the pregnancy; we simply loved each other and made a choice to begin our life together — albeit a little earlier than planned. And so we were married a few weeks before our senior year in high school. We made a plan and grew up together. We had three children and built a house. We stuck with the plan. We worked hard, him focusing on a career and me making our family my career. Life was good… and then he left. At that moment, I felt that I’d failed at the most important thing in my life. It destroyed my faith in myself, in love, in trust, in everything.

I was so angry that he made us a cliché. I was 43 years old and couldn’t support myself.

Looking back now I realize that I was devastated because I had never developed my own identity. It was terrifying to have to start that process in my 40s. I had a voice in my head saying, “What am I going to do?” over and over and over until I finally began doing something. I went to college then graduate school. My three adult children were my biggest cheerleaders. They had faith in me when I didn’t in myself. Sure, they were also about the same age as most of my classmates but I think going to school “older” made me more focused.

wendy mooney

And here I am now, 57 and successfully self-employed. I became a psychotherapist so I could help other people make sense of their pain as I’ve tried to do with mine. I learned to stop thinking “I can’t” or “I shouldn’t.” I became fearless about using power tools. I went skydiving for my 50th birthday and take the opportunity to celebrate life when I can. I know I’m still a work in progress and sometimes I miss where I thought I’d be in my life now but I know that I’m the only one who can make change in my life and there’s freedom in being in charge of just me.

Divorce is hard. For me, it was the death of so many hopes and dreams and expectations of how I would live my life. It takes time to recover but when you begin to move forward again it’s with a whole new set of hopes and dreams for a future entirely of your making.
