Watch of the Week: Ralph Lauren’s New Polo Watches Bring Bold, Preppy Style to Your Wrist

Since 2008, when Ralph Lauren Watches and Fine Jewelry launched, the brand has released many high-quality, stylish timepieces in addition to its well known apparel. That trend continues with the company’s latest collection: a set of four Polo-branded watches powered by Swiss-made mechanical movements and dressed in several eye-catching colors. If you’re a fan of the brand’s iconic take on menswear, you won’t want to miss these.

“When considering Americana style, no brand is more top of mind than Polo Ralph Lauren,” says Men’s Journal Fashion Editor Kevin Breen. “With the drop of its second watch collection, the brand offers a new slew of collectable timepieces that fuses its iconic logo with its heritage sport-prep colorways.”

The new Polo watches—a follow-up to the first Polo timepiece collection from 2018—marry Ralph Lauren’s bold, preppy style with Swiss watchmaking tradition. The first thing you’ll notice about them are the dials. Each one comes stamped with Ralph Lauren’s polo player logo brought to life in a multicolor, 3D-printed image, and it makes a clear focal point on the face of each watch. The polo player first appeared as a stitched logo on Polo shirts back in 1972, but the colorful rendering on these timepieces brings out a whole new level of detail. We love the way it adds visual interest to the collection.

Although a polo player riding across the dial might sound a bit overbearing, the tasteful accents on the rest of the watches balance the logo nicely. Their 42mm stainless steel cases come with an exhibition caseback that shows off the inner workings of the automatic movement—a nice counterpoint to the colorful details on the front. In addition, simple luminescent indices and sword-shaped hour and minute hands make the watches easy to read and keep them from looking too busy.

Picky about what goes on your wrist? Luckily, you have plenty of options here, and that makes the Polo watches great for merging into an adventurous wardrobe or adding color if you usually opt for neutral tones. The dials come in green, navy blue, and black (available with stainless steel or matte black trim), all topped with curved sapphire crystal glass. Once you pick a dial color, there are a wealth of straps and bracelets to choose from, including polished or black sandblasted stainless steel and cotton and leather straps with designs inspired by Ralph Lauren apparel. The straps really let you tweak the look and feel of these watches, whether you’re looking for something refined or something a little more sporty.

Of course, any watch with the “Swiss-made” moniker attached to it should have some impressive machinery inside, and the Polo watches don’t disappoint there, either. No matter how you option your timepiece, you’ll get a caliber RL200 automatic movement that offers a 38-hour power reserve. The watches are also water resistant to around 100 meters—enough to survive the occasional splash, so you can feel good about showing yours off day-to-day.

The new Polo collection shows that Ralph Lauren’s preppy styling can work well in the realm of fine mechanical timepieces. From the striking colors to the polo player logo, there’s no mistaking who designed these watches.

Watch of the Week: The Seiko SNR045 Prospex LX Limited Edition Is Inspired by an Antarctic Expedition

Since launching in 2019, the watches in Seiko’s Prospex LX line have won accolades for their sporty design, attention to detail, and robust construction. Now Seiko has grown the collection with the new Prospex LX SNR045, a dive watch with an eye-catching green color scheme that references Japan’s long history of scientific exploration in Antarctica.

So how exactly does a green colorway represent the famously cold and icy continent of Antarctica? To answer that, you’ll need to know a little bit about the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE). The program launched with a voyage to Antarctica in 1956 and established a research outpost, Syowa Station, on the continent a year later. In the decades since, JARE teams have performed all kinds of research, and they have made a number of important discoveries—including a surprising finding under the surface of a frigid Antarctic lake in an area called Skarvsnes. There, researchers found tower-like clumps of aquatic moss growing in the icy water, and the green hues and patterned dial of the SNR045 are an homage to these hardy “moss pillars.”

Seiko

Mounds of aquatic moss are an unexpected source for style inspiration, and it definitely makes this watch unique. The 44.8mm case stands out boldly on the wrist and offers plenty of space for the “underwater forest” pattern on the dial to shine. The dial features date and power reserve displays and LumiBrite hands and indices, and it’s topped with curved sapphire crystal and a forest green ceramic rotating bezel. Considering that many other sport watches stick with traditional accent colors like blue and black, the rich green features on the SNR045 are a welcome departure from the norm.

Of course, this is a dive watch we’re talking about, and some impressive details back up the tasteful design and ensure good performance under demanding conditions. The SNR045 is water resistant to 300 meters, features an ultra-tough titanium case and bracelet, and comes with a screw-down crown to lock out moisture. Like any true dive watch, the rotating bezel has minute indices for tracking time underwater. It’s also powered by Seiko’s innovative Spring Drive system (caliber 5R65), which combines a mechanically driven movement with a quartz regulator for top-notch accuracy—it’s accurate to within a second per day. Pair that with the watch’s 72-hour power reserve, and you have one highly dependable timepiece, whether you’re wearing it with your scuba gear or just on a weekend getaway.

It’s also destined to be a collector’s item: Seiko plans to manufacture just 500 of these emerald-toned watches, and each one will come with its limited edition number engraved on the case back. The SNR045 goes on sale in August, so keep an eye out to snag this handsome watch for your collection.

Watch of the Week: The Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue Recreates a Piece of Dive Watch History

The new Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue checks a lot of boxes: strong military pedigree, robust construction, and classic proportions, to name just a few. This timepiece is the latest iteration of Tudor’s popular Black Bay Fifty-Eight line of dive watches, each one inspired by the company’s “Big Crown” dive watch released in 1958. The crisp navy blue color of this particular model recalls the Tudor watches that the French navy adopted in the 1960s and ‘70s. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue combines that military history with a striking mid-century design and a modern movement for an all-around impressive dive watch.

“I love when brands pay tribute to defining moments in their history,” says Men’s Journal Fashion Editor Kevin Breen. “The nods to their past combined with the sleek modern technology and great pricing definitely makes this one of my favorite new launches.”

tudor
Courtesy Tudor

If you’re not up to speed on the history of Tudor dive watches, here’s a quick overview. The company released its first dive watch, called the Oyster Prince Submariner, in 1954. 1958’s “Big Crown” watch received its moniker thanks to its large 8mm crown, but it also stands out as a major technical step forward in the Submariner line: It was the first Tudor dive watch to attain a water resistance rating of 200 meters.

According to Tudor, subsequent Submariner watches caught the attention of the French military, and the Marine Nationale (the French navy) became prominent customers. The current Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue takes a cue from a Tudor dive watch released in 1969, which was the first to feature a blue dial and matching bezel. The Marine Nationale eventually adopted the color scheme, known as Tudor Blue, for its standard-issue watches in the 1970s.

All that history makes the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue an interesting conversation piece; the bold colorway and classic aesthetics make it a handsome accessory, too. The sleek 39mm stainless steel case bucks the trend toward ever-larger men’s watches, and it features a domed navy blue dial with luminous “snowflake” hands—another hallmark of Tudor dive watches that first appeared in the late 1960s. The rotating bezel (a dive watch staple; it allows for precise time tracking) is attired in matching navy blue and features silver-gilded markings.

tudor

True to its military roots, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight can handle the rigors of daily wear. It’s powered by Tudor’s COSC-certified MT5402 self-winding movement, which is made in-house and is tested to ensure no more than a few seconds’ variation per day. In addition, the Fifty-Eight features a 200-meter waterproof rating—yes, you can take it for a swim—and it has a 70-hour power reserve. According to Tudor, the lengthy power backup makes the watch “weekend-proof.” In other words, you can take it off on a Friday and wear it on Monday without having to wind it.

Of course, a watch this rugged and good-looking deserves to be worn on the weekend. To really highlight the eye-catching color of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue, opt for the matching navy blue fabric strap that Tudor has released along with it. Even the strap has some unique history: It’s made on vintage French jacquard looms by the Julien Faure company, which Tudor has partnered with for the past 10 years. The strap’s silver stripe and clasp make a great complement to the watch’s deep blue and steel color scheme—and add another considered detail to a timepiece that definitely has a story to tell.

Watch of the Week: The TAG Heuer Connected Golf Edition Brings Style and Smarts to the Course

Cyclists, runners, and swimmers have long enjoyed plenty of options for powerful activity-tracking watches, but now other sports are getting some love, too—including golf. Following up on the release of its first Connected Golf Edition watch in 2019, TAG Heuer has launched a successor timepiece with an impressive lineup of golf tracking features and plenty of course-inspired style.

The Golf Edition was designed entirely in-house, and it’s sure to make a bold statement in the tee box. In a press release, TAG Heuer’s Chief Strategy and Digital Officer Frédéric Arnault called the new Connected watch Golf Edition “a one-of-a kind timepiece thoughtfully crafted to boost the player’s game and stand out on the course.”

tag-golf
Courtesy image

At first glance, the biggest standout is the sleek monochrome color scheme: A lightweight 45mm black titanium case is paired with a matte black ceramic bezel, and it’s engraved with 18 graduations representing each hole of a golf course. Closer inspection reveals other subtle references to the sport, including a golf ball-patterned white rubber strap that’s accented with green stitching.

There’s also plenty of substance to match that style. The Golf Edition comes with premium features like built-in GPS for standalone tracking and an OLED touchscreen topped with sapphire crystal for good durability. Power users will appreciate its Google Wear operating system, which provides access to Google Pay, message notifications, and more.

But the watch really shines when paired with the TAG Heuer Golf app. It gives you access to almost 40,000 interactive course maps, monitors your game with detailed stat tracking, and can even suggest what club to use. And when you’re not golfing, it’ll record running and cycling workouts, too.

The only thing it won’t do? Haul your clubs around. But we think that’s asking a lot of wristwatch.

The first Seamaster appeared in 1948, originally as a dress watch with limited water resistance. By the late 1950s, however, Omega had transformed the Seamaster line into full-blown dive watches capable of operating in the ocean. They became favorites of notable watermen including Jacques Cousteau and COMEX divers. Fast forward a few decades, and the Seamaster gained a renewed burst of popularity when it was featured in the movie GoldenEye in 1995. Seamasters have appeared in several James Bond films since then, which further cemented the watch’s reputation as a tough, dependepable, and incredibly stylish timepiece.

With its durable automatic movement, bold 42mm stainless steel case, black ceramic bezel, and distinctive “wave pattern” dial, the Seamaster up for grabs in this sweepstakes perfectly exemplifies the trusted design and timeless style these watches are known for. It’s no surprise that the Seamaster is 007’s pick, and now it can be yours, too. Check out the video above for more info on the giveaway, and then head over to Crown & Caliber to enter today.

Watches and Water: Resistance Ratings, Caring for Your Watch, and More

This article was produced in partnership with Crown & Caliber. Learn more about its expertly curated collection of watches, and why over 60,000 buyers and sellers trust its online marketplace.

Thinking of going for a swim with your watch? Take a minute to do your research, or you might be sorry. As the experts at Crown & Caliber outline in the video above, there’s no such thing as a truly waterproof watch, just varying levels of water resistance. In fact, jumping into the pool might totally ruin your timepiece. But armed with some knowledge, you can make sure to pick out the right watch for your needs.

First, it’s important to understand what water resistance ratings mean. Put simply, they’re measures of the water pressure that a watch can withstand. Although these ratings are often expressed in terms of depth, a 50-meter resistance rating doesn’t mean you can swim in 50 meters of water with your watch. As C&C’s Nathan Nerswick explains in the video, that can lead to some confusion when shopping.

“People will often mistake water-resistant for waterproof, and these are not the same,” he says.

When you see a depth rating, it’s better to think of it in terms of water pressure, because that’s how watchmakers test their timepieces. The depth ratings are based on static pressure measured in very controlled settings—nothing like the variable conditions you experience in the ocean or the pool. That’s why a 50-meter depth rating isn’t enough to take your watch on a swim.

To avoid confusion, keep a few C&C-approved guidelines in mind. Watches with ratings in the 30- to 50-meter range will stand up to rain and hand-washing, but that’s it. Watches with a 100-meter rating can be taken swimming, but only if they have screw-down crowns and sealed cases. For serious underwater activity, you’ll need a rating of 300 meters or more, and that’s dive watch territory. With that kind of water resistance, your timepiece will function while scuba diving (up to a certain depth), and some models have even higher ratings.

But dive watches need proper care to keep out water. Make sure you have the gaskets and seals on your watch checked regularly, and always keep them clean and lubricated. In addition, no matter what kind of watch you have, take it off before showering.

“Soap and steam are never friends of gaskets,” Nerswick says.

Dive watches are ideal for people who spend a lot of time around the water, and there are lots of great examples at a variety of price points. Plus, dive watches are just as versatile in your wardrobe as they are in the water: They pair well with tees and jeans or even a formal tux, and you can wear them day or night. Check out C&C’s Dive Watch 101 for an introduction to these remarkable timepieces, and don’t miss the company’s dive watch guide for an overview of some great buys.

For the full rundown on water resistance, check out the video above, and make sure to visit Crown & Caliber for expert guidance when picking out your next timepiece.

How to Use a GMT Watch (And Why You Want One)

This article was produced in partnership with Crown & Caliber. Learn more about its expertly curated collection of watches, and why over 60,000 buyers and sellers trust its online marketplace.

These days, the cutting edge of watch technology is usually something with a touchscreen and “smart” in its name—but that doesn’t mean that tried-and-true mechanical watch tech is done for. If you appreciate craftsmanship, style, and attention to detail on your wrist, traditional watches still have many remarkable features to offer. Nobody knows those features better than the experts at Crown & Caliber, and a new video from the company highlights one particularly useful complication: the GMT function. Although the feature has been around for decades, GMT watches are still an ideal fit for today’s tech-savvy traveler.

First, a little history: GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, the international timekeeping standard first developed in the seventeenth century. Today, it’s still the standard for determining time zones across the globe, and watches with a GMT complication, like the sought-after Rolex GMT Master II featured in the video, allow the wearer to keep track of multiple time zones at once.

The Master II was the first Rolex to feature a separate 24-hour hand, which allows the watch to keep accurate time while you reset the hour hand. Put simply, that means you can adjust the time to match a different time zone without losing accuracy. The watch debuted back in the 1980s and remains one of the most popular examples of the GMT complication. Originally developed for Pan Am airline pilots, it allowed them to track the time at two distant airports simultaneously. Back then, that was considered a useful trick for people who regularly flew through multiple time zones; today, “people who regularly fly through multiple time zones” describes a lot more than just pilots.

GMT watches are ideal for off-the-grid adventurers and travelers, too. When you touch down after a long flight, for example, the watch can help you manage your jet lag, and as the video illustrates, you can even use it as a compass. They’re also great for staying in sync with a distant office when working remotely. Plus, it’s a popular feature among watchmakers, and that means you can find GMT timepieces in a variety of styles across a range of price points (we recently highlighted one as a Watch of the Week).

Easy to use and incredibly handy, GMT watches are proof that trusted mechanical tech is alive and well in the digital age. Check out all the details on the GMT complication in the video above, and head over to Crown & Caliber for expert guidance when picking out your next timepiece.

Except where noted, the brands whose products Crown & Caliber, LLC sells are not associated with Crown & Caliber, LLC. The brand names are the trademarks of their respective owners. Crown & Caliber, LLC is an independent dealer, and is not an authorized reseller of any of the items they sell.

Watch of the Week: The Timex Ironman R300 GPS Gets Smart and Stays Affordable

Back in 1986, Timex released the first Ironman sport watch, a tough digital timepiece designed for athletes competing in the grueling Ironman series of races. The watch has gone through many different iterations since then, but now it has the brains to match its brawn. Timex has released the Ironman R300 GPS, which combines the watch’s trademark toughness with a deep suite of activity tracking and connected features, all at a bargain bin price point.

“With the R300, we will deliver the best value GPS smartwatch in the market,” said Shawn Cummings, Timex Group’s SVP of Advanced Technology, in a press release.

The first batch of these sporty watches has already sold out, so it looks like the company succeeded with that goal.

Watch of the Week: The Seiko SNJ025 Brings an ’80s Cult Classic Up to Date

When you do get your hands on one, however, you’re in for a treat. The new Ironman is built to compete against other top-tier activity trackers, and offers a long list of features that any athlete will appreciate. There’s continuous optical heart rate monitoring, step, calorie, and distance tracking, and sleep monitoring—all viewable in the Timex Smart App. Today’s smartwatches are also beefing up their training content, and the Ironman doesn’t slouch there, either. If you’re looking for a little guidance, you can download workouts and training plans for running, cycling, and triathlons in the watch’s companion app. The watch also features standalone GPS, so you don’t have to bring your phone along in order to track distance and pace.

“I love the GPS function that lets you stash your phone at home,” says Men’s Journal Senior Editor Sal Vaglica. “That makes it easy to travel light on long trail runs.”

But if you do pair it with your phone (via a Bluetooth connection), you can receive calls, notifications, and texts right on your wrist. That’s nothing particularly groundbreaking; Apple and Samsung have offered these features for years. It’s also not quite as feature-rich as similar watches from Garmin or Polar, but the R300 wins big on price, and its focused tracking metrics should be plenty for most casual athletes.

Watch of the Week: The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition Is a Legend Reborn

Even with the high-tech specs, the new Ironman hasn’t lost its legendary toughness. It’s water resistant to 50 meters and has 20 hours of battery life in GPS mode. Switch off the GPS, and you’ll get incredible endurance: up to 25 days of battery. Whether you’re training for a killer adventure race or just need a way to track your miles around the neighborhood, the new Ironman definitely has you covered.

Watch of the Week: The Alpiner Quartz GMT Is the Perfect Sport Watch for Travelers

Back in the 1930s, a new kind of watch burst onto the scene: Alpina’s “Block Uhr,” an anti-magnetic, shock- and water-resistant wristwatch clad in a stainless steel case. Although those specs might seem pedestrian today, they helped create the sport watch category and laid the groundwork for the huge range of outdoors-oriented timepieces that followed. The Alpiner Quartz line of watches is the descendant of the Block Uhr (alongside the mechanical Alpiner 4), and now Alpina has released three new models with a GMT function—a boon for travelers who need to track and adjust to different local times.

“The addition of the GMT function takes this watch to a more international level,” says Men’s Journal Fashion Editor Kevin Breen, “allowing avid travelers to easily adjust to life lived across different time zones.”

When traveling across the globe, you need a watch that’s accurate and reliable, and a trusty quartz ticker like the Alpiner Quartz GMT makes a great pick. Each of these three new watches have 24-hour increments engraved on the bezel, and a large central pointer tracks domestic time. The bezel is also color-coded, so it’s easy to see if it’s day or night in your chosen time zone at a glance. Plus, the pointer can be adjusted forwards and backwards, which makes correcting to a new time a snap. That’ll definitely save you some irritation when you’re jet-lagged after a long flight.

Watch of the Week: The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition Is a Legend Reborn

Along with those handy features, you also get a hefty dose of Alpina style. All of the Quartz GMTs are capped with sapphire crystal and wear a handsome 42mm stainless steel case, which is available in both satin and polished finishes. On the back, each comes with an engraving of the Alps—a nod to the brand’s Swiss origins.

The Best Dress Watches for Every Budget

The dial features a date display at 3 o’clock and two different options for colors: a sleek anthracite gray with a steel bracelet strap, or navy blue paired with your choice of leather or steel bracelet straps. No matter which you choose, you’ll get a sharp, subtle color palette that should mesh seamlessly with just about any outfit.

“I’ve always found the Alpiner Quartz to have great balance,” Breen says. “The product is masculine and refined without being too flashy.”

And, like any good sport watch, the Quartz GMT has the strength and endurance you need in the outdoors: It’s water resistant up to 100 meters, and it boasts four years of battery life. If you have some big adventures on your itinerary, this watch is up for it.

Movado Cancels Davos Watch Conference Over Coronavirus

The coronavirus has caused another cancellation: Movado’s Swiss watch conference in Davos.
The watch group has pulled the plug on its event, which had been planned for March 14 to 18, owing to growing concern over the coronavirus in Europe.
“When the virus was largely contained within China, we felt we could keep the Davos summit but scale it back to become a conference for our European and Middle-Eastern customers,” Movado chairman and chief executive officer Efraim Grinberg said in a statement. “Now with cases growing in Europe, we feel that we must act to protect the health and safety of our customers and employees and therefore have canceled the summit.”
This year was set to be Movado’s third annual stand-alone conference — a format the group launched in 2018 as an alternative to Baselworld. Each year the company hosts a keynote speaker, which in the past has included Tony Blair and Amal Clooney. Despite the lavish set-up, Movado estimates that its stand-alone conference costs the firm about 20 percent of what it once spent on the Baselworld fair.
Movado’s announcement follows a similar release Thursday by Baselworld’s competitor Watches & Wonders, which is also canceled due to the coronavirus.
Baselworld, however, appears to still

Watch of the Week: Baume x ZAG Limited Edition II

These days, brands looking to tout their eco-friendliness and stand out from the crowd are going fishing—for ocean plastic. Trash in the ocean is a serious issue, and one way to address it is to recycle it into products like shoes and clothing. Or, in the case of the new Baume x ZAG Limited Edition II, a wristwatch. Sustainability-focused watch brand Baume has once again teamed up with French ski manufacturer ZAG (the companies also released a watch last year) to create a new timepiece that incorporates ocean plastic and waste materials from ski production. On paper, it sounds like a recipe for a very ugly watch. But one look at the Baume x ZAG Limited Edition II shows that using upcycled materials doesn’t have to mean downgrading looks or performance.

“What makes this watch really interesting is the investment Baume has made in the sustainable design,” says Men’s Journal Fashion Editor Kevin Breen. “This commitment to environmentally friendly design is a unique perspective within the watch industry.”

Watch of the Week: The Zenith Defy Inventor Is a Big Leap Forward for Mechanical Watches

The ZAG II is available exclusively on the Baume website, and just 100 examples will be produced, so don’t snooze on this one. It features an automatic Miyota movement, and the openwork dial gives you a glimpse of the watch’s mechanics. It also comes with a number of Baume hallmarks that really set it apart from other watches. For example, the dial is laid out in a unique 24-hour regulator format: The main counter shows minutes, the smaller counter shows hours, and a tiny counter at the 2 o’clock position displays running seconds. Like other Baume watches, the crown is placed at the 12 o’clock position.

Baume x ZAG II
Courtesy Image

Natural and up-cycled materials abound on this timepiece. The 42mm case is made from scrap ski materials—natural wood and carbon—and they’re matched with a striking blue anodized aluminum container that protects the movement and makes it water-resistant. We especially love the design of the see-through case back: The contrast between the warm tones of the natural wood grain and the metal cogs of the Miyota movement really make this watch special.

To top it off, the Baume x ZAG Limited Edition II comes with two different straps, one in white and one in blue cotton. Both feature a cork lining (another natural material) for a comfortable feel against your wrist and contrast stitching for a bold, sporty look. In addition, the white strap uses yarn made from recycled ocean plastic sourced from Waste Free Oceans.

Watches of the Week: Frederique Constant Adds Bold New Colors to Its Flyback Chronograph Manufacture Collection

And if that’s not enough for you, two percent of the sales of each ZAG II will go to Protect Our Winters, a climate-change advocacy group. How’s that for helping the planet?

Overall, we think the timepiece brings out the best of Baume’s sustainability-focused ethos. The use of natural and recycled materials isn’t just a gimmick applied to one aspect of the watch. Instead, all of the eco-friendly materials come together to create a truly eye-catching design.

Watch of the Week: The Zenith Defy Inventor Is a Big Leap Forward for Mechanical Watches

When it comes to watches, the exciting new technology you usually hear about is digital: touch screens and haptic feedback, heart rate monitoring and video chatting on your wrist. The tech that powers mechanical watches, on the other hand, hasn’t changed much in centuries. That was until the Zenith Defy Inventor came along. Powered by an innovative Zenith Oscillator movement, the Defy Inventor replaces the traditional sprung balance system with a new ultra-thin silicon element for increased reliability and reduced complexity. If you love the careful craftsmanship of mechanical watches, you need to see this timepiece.

“Staying true to the Defy category’s ‘future of tradition’ tagline,” says Men’s Journal Fashion Editor Kevin Breen, “Zenith once again makes a remarkable push forward with the incorporation of the new single piece Zenith Oscillator.”

Watches of the Week: Frederique Constant Adds Bold New Colors to Its Flyback Chronograph Manufacture Collection

The balance spring has been powering watches since the mid-1600s, when the Dutch astronomer and mathematician Christian Huygens first came up with the idea. A balance spring, also known as a hairspring, uses a small coiled piece of metal to store energy—winding the watch tightens the spring, and then it slowly uncoils to power the watch.

zenith defy inventor
Courtesy Image

That’s not how the Zenith Defy Inventor works, though. Instead of a hairspring powering a long train of components (often as many as 30), the Calibre 9100 movement in the Inventor uses a single element made from silicon that vibrates at an ultra-quick 18 Hertz. That’s significantly faster than the 4 Hertz that most watches achieve, and the reduced complexity and faster movement makes for a lighter and more reliable timepiece.

The Inventor is easy on the eyes, too.

“If the mechanical achievements don’t impress you,” Breen says, “I’m sure the gorgeous aesthetic of this timepiece will grab your attention.”

Zenith smartly chose to display its Calibre 9100 within the watch: The inner workings of the movement are visible through openwork on the dial. In addition, the company sourced some unique materials to make this timepiece. It sports a large 44mm titanium case and features a bezel made from Aeronith, an aluminum foam combined with a polymer that’s three times lighter than titanium. Thanks to these lightweight materials, the watch is designed to practically disappear on your wrist, and they also give it a finish unlike any other ticker in your collection (or anyone else’s).

The watch features minute, hour, and second hands, is water resistant up to 330 feet, and comes finished with a bold black and midnight blue strap. It also features a 50-hour power reserve, which guarantees you a comfortable two days of operation before you have to worry about winding it.

Watch of the Week: An ’80s Cult Classic Gets an Update

Big hair, loud pastel color combinations, step aerobics—there’s a lot about the ’80s that we’re happy to leave in the past. But there are also a few things we miss, and our latest Watch of the Week really satisfies our nostalgia. It’s the Seiko SNJ025, a revamped version of the company’s iconic 1982 Hybrid Diver’s Watch, which was the first dive watch to combine analog hands and a digital display on one dial. It was released this past fall, and we’re thrilled to see it make a comeback.

Watch of the Week: The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition Is a Legend Reborn

First, a little history. The Hybrid Diver’s Watch, also known as the H558, was released in 1982. According to Seiko, the H558 initially won praise when it was worn on multiple climbs up Mount Everest (an interesting claim to fame for a dive watch). But that was just the start. The timepiece really gained a cult following once Arnold Schwarzenegger started wearing it in movies like Predator, says Men’s Journal Senior Editor Sal Vaglica. Despite that notable celebrity endorsement, the H558 went out of production in the early 1990s.

seiko snj025

Fast forward to Baselword last year, and the watch resurfaced, this time as the SNJ025. It has the unmistakeable look of the original (it still sports the analog and digital combination), but it has also been modernized for today’s wearer. The H558 used a quartz movement, but the new version is solar-powered, which means there are no batteries to replace. Seiko also added a few other improvements while still remaining true to the watch’s eye-catching design.

“It keeps a lot of the features of the original, like a chronograph and alarm, but adds in a calendar and dual time,” says Vaglica. “It’s also a bit bigger than the original, at 47.8mm, so it’s a good fit for larger wrists.”

Watches of the Week: The Luminox x Bear Grylls Collection Is Built to Keep You Alive in the Wild

In addition, the watch features a power reserve display function (Seiko claims it has a 6-month reserve when fully charged), a screw-down crown and two pushers, a one-way rotating bezel for tracking elapsed time, and LumiBrite-coated hands and indices for good low-light readability. Seiko has also released a sleek blacked-out version (the SNJ028), and collaborated with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors on a special-edition model with a red and blue bezel (the SNJ027).

No matter which version you go with, you’ll get a quality dive watch. Each one is rated for water resistance down to 660 feet, and they come with a comfortable, water-friendly silicone strap.

Today, the H558 is a collector’s item. If you’re not one of the lucky few who own an original, the SNJ025 is a great way to get that classic style with some extra functionality thrown in, too. We think Dutch Schaefer would approve.

This Watch Owner Literally Hit the Floor When He Found Out the Real Worth of His Rolex

It’s a moment any watch owner would dream of having: You’re on Antiques Roadshow with a Rolex Oyster Cosmograph watch you bought in 1974 for $ 345.97, waiting for the appraiser to let you know how much it’s worth. You’re hoping for a little bit of extra value; wouldn’t it be nice to see that it’s now worth 20 times as much? Maybe even 50 times? How about over 1,000 times as much?

Paul Newman’s Badass ‘Daytona’ Rolex Just Became the Most Valuable Watch of All Time

That’s what one former Air Force member found himself dealing with when Antiques Roadshow appraiser Peter Planes told him how much his old watch was worth during a stop on the show’s tour in Bonanzaville, which is located in West Fargo, N.D, according to The Washington Post.

13 of the Most Stylish Watches You Can Own Under $ 250

Planes says that the watch resembles the now-iconic one that Paul Newman wore, and that those watches are “going for $ 150,000 to $ 200,000. Your watch is more special: It says Oyster on it. They did that for an extremely short period of time… This particular model marked Oyster is extremely rare. A watch like this at auction is worth about $ 400,000 dollars.”

When Planes said the words $ 400,000 dollars, all the man could do was fall to the floor. Watch the video here:

That wasn’t the end of it either: It turns out that his watch could fetch even more than what it’s worth at auction—so long as he doesn’t wear it.

Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona Just Got Auctioned Off For Almost $ 18 Million

A word to the wise out there: When you buy your next watch or Rolex timepiece, make sure you keep in good shape, you never know how much it’ll be worth someday.

Watch of the Week: TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition

TAG Heuer has been turning out finely crafted timepieces since 1860, and in honor of the company’s 160th anniversary this year, it’s reimagining a beloved series of watches: the Carrera line. The new Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition combines the bold styling of the original model with a modern chronograph movement and exclusive commemorative details. Get ready for one handsome watch with plenty of history behind it, too.

Watches of the Week: The Luminox x Bear Grylls Collection Is Built to Keep You Alive in the Wild

The Carrera line began in 1962, when CEO Jack Heuer learned about the Carrera Panamericana, a grueling auto race held in Mexico in the 1950s. Inspired by the race, he envisioned a clean, well-proportioned chronograph watch bearing the Carrera name, and in 1963, the first example, known as the 2447S, left the company’s factory. Its starburst silver dial and three embedded counters made the watch easy to read while driving—and also incredibly stylish. Since then, Carrera watches have also featured the brand’s top tech, including the Valjoux 72 movement that powered the original.

tag heuer

The Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition stays true to the legacy of the original watch while updating it for modern tastes. It comes with a polished stainless steel case that’s slightly larger (39mm) than the original Carrera, which measured 36mm. The case back features “one of 1860” and “LIMITED EDITION” engravings, and you can even take a peek inside: A sapphire crystal cover provides a view of the oscillating weight of the movement.

There are other subtle changes as well. On the new version, the second indicator has moved to the 6 o’clock position (it was at 9 o’clock on the original Carrera) to accommodate the new Heuer 02 movement. The dial features a chronograph function, hour and minute indicators, and the Carrera name and Heuer logo. Plus, the main hour and minute hands are faceted and coated with beige SuperLuminova for low-light visibility, and it’s water resistant to 100 meters, so you can feel good about wearing this one out and about. It’s not designed to be stuck inside a glass case.

It’s all topped off with domed sapphire crystal—a nice retro touch—and comes with a sleek black alligator leather strap. Style-wise, this is a watch that should be right at home with most of your wardrobe.

“Modern and clean, this piece is perfectly versatile,” said Men’s Journal Fashion Editor Kevin Breen. “It can be used to add a sporty touch to any business suit and as an eye-catching accessory to elevate a more casual outfit.”

It’ll be especially sharp when paired with a black leather jacket, a white turtleneck, tapered black trousers, and white tennis shoes, Breen says.

“The watch will take that classic-but-casual outfit to the next level.”

tag heuer
Courtesy Image

Under the hood, it’s also a fine example of TAG Heuer’s quality craftsmanship. The Heuer 02 movement is made in-house, and features a whopping 80-hour power reserve and a thinner profile for a more slimmed-down shape. It also includes innovations like a vertical clutch for greater precision—it keeps the watch from losing time when you use the start-stop chronograph function—and a column wheel for smooth, precise movements when you activate the push buttons. The movement also oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) for better stability.

All of these features combine for smooth, consistent, and accurate operation even through the rigors of daily wear. Which is exactly what you’d expect from the rebirth of such a classic model from TAG Heuer.

Moore From L.A.: 5 Trends to Watch This Red-Carpet Awards Show Fashion Season

‘Tis the season…for Hollywood red-carpet prep!
There will be parties for hosting, blockbusters for toasting and campaigning ahead of the show — it truly is the most wonderful time of the year. But, like this holiday shopping season, this awards season is compressed. Two weeks shorter than last year’s lead-up to the Oscars, the accelerated schedule has stylists and designers working overtime, all in the name of glam.
Tom Ford has already thrown down the gauntlet by moving his runway show from New York Fashion Week to Los Angeles, hosting it on Feb. 7, two days ahead of the Feb. 9 Oscars. And he’s likely to have a banner year because of it. (Rather than a runway show, he could just have had his fall collection modeled by nominees walking the Oscars red carpet and saved a step.)
But there’s still a lot of spotlight before then. This week, nominees were revealed for the Golden Globes (Jan. 5), Critics Choice Awards (Jan. 13) and SAG Awards (Jan. 19). And, with so much streaming content from Netflix, Amazon, Apple and the like, it seems as if there is a record number of A-list women to be dressed, including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Phoebe Waller-Bridge,

Daniel Craig’s New James Bond Watch From ‘No Time To Die’ Can Be Yours in 2020

When Daniel Craig hits the silver screen in his final appearance as James Bond in No Time To Die, he’ll have a handy new timepiece on his wrist. Craig’s Bond will be wearing the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition watch, which was designed in collaboration with Craig for the 25th official film in the franchise.

‘Bond 25’: Everything You Need to Know About the Next James Bond Film ‘No Time To Die’

Bond has been wearing an Omega watch since Pierce Brosnan played the character in 1995’s GoldenEye. For this particular timepiece, Omega is releasing it as part of a non-limited collection in February, giving fans everywhere the chance to wear the same timepiece as Craig’s Bond in the new film.

Courtesy of Omega
Courtesy of Omega

The design of the new Seamaster was inspired by Bond’s military past as a former Royal Naval Reserve Commander, as he would have been given an Omega watch in real life if he was a British Royal Navy officer. The Bond films’ original partnership with Omega was in part inspired by that history as well.

This Limited-Edition Omega Seamaster Diver Watch Celebrates an Iconic James Bond Film

“When our costume designer on GoldenEye, Lindy Hemming, whose father would have been one of the people who got the Navy Omega watch in the war, recommended it, I felt that particular history was a fit for the character,” said longtime Bond producer Michael G. Wilson, who has worked on the franchise since 1972, at a press conference for the release of the watch. “Omega first came to mind for me as a strong timepiece when Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon and all the astronauts had Omega timepieces. When Lindy brought it to me, I thought, ‘if it’s good enough for the astronauts, it has to be good enough for James Bond.’”

Craig himself collaborated with the design team, making it the first time ever that an actor playing Bond helped design a watch for the character.

When it was brought to me at the beginning of the filming process, I thought, ‘You’ve done it: This is the James Bond watch.’

“I wanted to help create a watch that suited my Bond character, who is a military man at heart,” Craig said at the press conference. “We started having a dialogue and Omega took in my input, and the watch is the culmination of that dialogue, and, in a way, a culmination of my character of Bond in this series of films. It’s a military watch, but it’s also elegant. You can wear it as a dress watch, but it feels like a military watch, which is what Bond would need. It’s titanium, and light as a feather. When it was brought to me at the beginning of the filming process, I thought, ‘You’ve done it: This is the James Bond watch.’”

This James Bond Omega Watch Set Is Inspired By ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’

The new Seamaster is featured multiple times in the No Time To Die trailer, including when Bond is speaking with Spectre villain Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) and later when he gets ready to shoot a gun around the two minute mark. Here’s a look at the trailer:

The watch will be available with a titanium mesh bracelet strap, or a striped NATO strap in dark brown, gray, and beige, which also has “007″ engraved on the loop. The timepieces are made with Grade 2 Titanium on the case and mesh bracelet, and the caseback includes references to the Omega’s military history as well as the Bond character.

Each watch includes a naval code-number that fits the format for genuine military-issue watches along with “007,” for Bond’s double-00 agent number, and “62,” referencing the year the first Bond film (Dr. No) was released. The Seamaster watch with the NATO strap is available for $ 8,100, while the titanium mesh strap timepiece is set at $ 9,200.

Watch of the Week: Get Cockpit-Inspired Style With the Jack Mason x Taylor Stitch Aviator

Ever since Cartier produced the first one back in 1904, pilot watches have evolved from a utilitarian cockpit essential into a rugged and stylish accessory. They were some of the first wristwatches ever made, and were built to meet the needs of aviators with specific complications like chronographs and tachymeters. Well over a century later, pilot watches are still going strong. For proof, look no further than the new The Jack Mason x Taylor Stitch Aviator Multi‑Scale Chronograph. A collaboration between the Texas-based heritage watch company and the San Francisco menswear brand, the Aviator is an homage to the daring pilots of the 1930s and the trusty timepieces they wore.

Like any good pilot watch, it comes with all the features you need to keep your bearings in the air. The Aviator features 30-minute and running seconds subdials, a date display, and a chronograph function, all housed in a 42mm stainless steel case. It also comes equipped with two complications that pilots would definitely appreciate: a tachymeter scale around the outer edge of the dial that tracks speed over time, and a telemeter scale that can estimate the distance to an event that is seen and then heard. It’s powered by a Ronda Z50 analog quartz movement, and it’s water resistant up to 100 meters, so it’s just as comfortable at the beach as it is in the cockpit (or anywhere else you decide to take it).

Tech aside, the Aviator has really strong style chops, too. The matte navy blue dial features striking red and gray accents and applied metal indices, and the case comes with a “coin edge” texture that adds a touch of ruggedness—and also makes the watch easy to grip while wearing gloves. Plus, it comes with two straps: one made from tan Italian leather, and one made from blue canvas that complements the dial nicely.

All together, the Aviator takes cues from classic pilot watches and turns them into a more versatile chronograph that’s a great candidate for everyday wear. Whether you dress it up with the leather strap or opt for a more laid-back look with the blue canvas, you can’t go wrong.

The Panerai Submersible BMG-Tech Watch That Can Keep Up With Jimmy Chin

Looking for a statement watch that will follow you from the bottom of the sea to the top of Everest? Panerai’s latest Submersible BMG-Tech celebrates the brand’s history of building tough timepieces with a watch that combines classic elegance and absolute rugged design.

The Panerai family opened its first Florence workshop in 1860, supplying watches exclusively to the Italian Royal Navy, and during World War II, the company was enlisted to design diving watches for the service’s frogman commandos. These days, Panerai is a luxury brand, with an elevated sophistication, but they remain true to that spirit of service. The Submersible BMG-Tech perfectly marries that legacy with their pioneering drive.

7 Luxury Watches to Give the Stylish Guy on Your List This Year

There are two different proprietary innovations on display in this watch. The case features the first BMG-TECH, a bulk metallic glass, constructed with an alloy of zirconium, copper, aluminum, titanium, and nickel that is heated and cooled rapidly. This process prevents the atoms from assuming a regular structure, instead holding in a chaotic formation that gives it greater strength and an enhanced resistance to corrosion. That means you don’t have to think twice when the urge to dive in the ocean or lake hits.

The bezel features their second innovation, Carbotech, a material based on carbon fiber that combines toughness and impressive lightness. The substance also brings a unique identity to each piece, and the finished lines of each Carbotech fabrication are different. The movement is a P. 9010 calibre executed completely in-house by the Panerai team. Beneath the case is a clear-to-read dial that’s visible in any lighting conditions, and there are two different Super-LumiNova on the markers, which are charged by the sun or artificial light.

But let’s be honest, it is not all about the science—it’s also about the style. Even with all of its tech advancements, the Submersible BMG-Tech remains a classically sleek piece, perfect for any adventure—indoors or out. The body wears big but will comfortably fit on your wrist, making it a fitting option for any situation. There’s a reason that Oscar-winning filmmaker and National Geographic photographer Jimmy Chin has recently chosen Panerai to wear on his expeditions as well as on the red carpet events for Free Solo.

The diving watch genre, including the Submersible BMG-Tech, is a practical addition to any guy’s collection, a ready companion for the entire day, from the morning surf session to work to beers with the crew.

Watch of the Week: The Seiko Prospex LX Line Diver’s Watch Is a New Take on a Timeless Classic

Versatile, stylish, and tough, dive watches are some of our favorite timepieces to own. That’s why the Seiko Prospex LX Line Diver’s caught our eye—it’s an award-winning automatic dive watch that marries classic looks with unbeatable craftsmanship. We’re not the only ones who think so, either. The watch took home the Diver’s Watch Prize at the prestigious 2019 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève earlier this month, beating out six other dive watches. It’s a great timepiece to add to your collection, and the kind you can feel good about wearing for nearly any occasion.

Now, some background on the brand: Seiko has over half a century of experience manufacturing dive watches. The company unveiled its first diver’s watch in 1965, and according to a press release, the LX is a nod to the Seiko Professional Diver’s watch, released in 1968. With its bold black bezel and three different-sized hands, the new watch incorporates key aesthetic features of that landmark timepiece.

This $ 31.1 Million Patek Philippe Is Now the Most Expensive Watch Ever Auctioned

It also includes some pretty serious tech, most notably Seiko’s 5R Spring Drive caliber. This movement offers more precise timekeeping (it’s tested to deviate just a second per day) while also resisting shocks and temperature changes no matter where you’re heading.

The LX is also water resistant to 300 meters so you don’t have to worry about damaging it. It even comes with a date display and power reserve display, and features a Lumibrite coating on the hands and indices so it’s easier to read when you’re in a place with less light. Combine all that with a low center of gravity for comfortable wear, and you’ve got an ideal candidate for an everyday watch.

The best part about dive watches: They go with pretty much anything you throw on in the morning—whether you’re donning your new leather jacket or dressing up for a special occasion—and the LX is no exception.

The 44.8mm titanium case, sleek black dial, and large numerals on the bezel make a strong statement with a suit, and overall the watch is a stylish companion at the office. But ultimately it’s a sport watch, so while you can also wear it to class up a casual outfit, it’s not out of place at the pool or the beach, either. You’ll want to keep this one on your dresser; we have a feeling it’ll be in heavy rotation.

Not shopping for yourself? With the holidays coming up, the LX makes an excellent gift. It’ll merge seamlessly into any guy’s style—and elevate it, too.

This $31.1 Million Patek Philippe Is Now the Most Expensive Watch Ever Auctioned

How’s this for exclusive: On Saturday, Christie’s auctioned off a one-of-a-kind, never worn Patek Philippe watch, and the luxury timepiece sold for a record-breaking 31 million Swiss francs, or $ 31.1 million. That’s the highest price ever paid for an auctioned timepiece, and it beats the previous record by roughly $ 7.8 million, according to CNN.

Breitling and Crown & Caliber Just Made It Easier for You to Get a New Luxury Watch

The watch, a Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 6300A-010, was specially made for this auction. According to a statement from Christie’s, it’s the only version of the timepiece ever produced in stainless steel, and it’s reversible, featuring two dial plates made from 18-carat gold with gold applied Breguet numerals on the time side. There are 20 complications in total, including five chiming modes, a day/night indicator, and day/date on both dials. The case measures 47.7mm in diameter, and it’s held in place with a sleek black hand-stitched alligator leather band. And just in case you forget how rare this ticker is, it’s marked with the inscription “the only one.”

An anonymous buyer purchased the watch on Saturday, and the final sale blew past the watch’s estimated price of $ 2.5 to $ 3 million, according to data from Christie’s. Interestingly, the previous record was also held by a Patek Philippe watch: That went to a vintage model made in 1932 that sold for 23.2 million Swiss francs in a 2014 Sotheby’s auction, CNN reports.

The Grandmaster was one of 50 timepieces auctioned during Only Watch, a biannual event to raise money for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease that causes muscle deterioration. Overall, the event raised over $ 38 million for the cause—the bulk of it coming from just one ultra rare, incredibly expensive watch.

Breitling and Crown & Caliber Just Made It Easier for You to Get a New Luxury Watch

Getting tired of your usual watch? Now you can trade it in for a brand-new Breitling. The esteemed Swiss watchmaker has partnered with Crown & Caliber, the online retailer which lets you buy and sell pre-owned luxury watches, to launch an online platform where you can trade in your luxury watch and receive credit towards the purchase of a Breitling timepiece. That makes Breitling the first major Swiss watchmaker to accept pre-owned watches for a new model. The platform is now live, and you can access it on the Breitling website.

Here's the Versatile, Rugged Watch John Krasinski's Wearing in 'Jack Ryan' Season 2

“In the industry there was a lot of talk about the secondary market,” Thierry Prissert, Breitling USA President, told Men’s Journal. “We needed to embrace it in a way that satisfies our customers.”

Trading Up

With the launch of the platform, Breitling has entered into the booming pre-owned watch market—by some estimates, a $ 17-$ 20 billion industry—in a big way, although Crown & Caliber handles the process of appraising the timepieces. The companies first crossed paths at Baselworld, the watch and jewelry trade show, a few years ago, but began to work on the new platform in earnest starting last year.

For Prissert, working with an established partner like Crown & Caliber was the best way for Breitling to get into the secondary market. C&C already handles sales of many pre-owned Breitling watches and has a reputation for selling high-quality timepieces. But the company’s knowledge of watch sales was a big draw, too. Since its launch in 2013, C&C has processed over 40,000 transactions and built a massive database in the process, including not only how much certain watches sell for, but also how long they’re on the market.

“Virtually any watch that we see,” Hamilton Powell, CEO and Founder of Crown & Caliber, told Men’s Journal, “we will have historical sales pricing on.”

“That was the convincing factor,” Prissert said, adding that the partnership saved Breitling from having to figure out the pre-owned watch market from scratch. As any watch aficionado will tell you, it can be a difficult arena to navigate—shady sellers and fake watches abound. That makes established, legitimate retailers like C&C all the more valuable.

breitling

The new launch comes at an exciting time for Breitling. The company revamped its website last year and only recently began selling some of its watches online. The goal with these new initiatives is to give watch buyers more options in how they find and purchase a timepiece, Prissert said.

With trade-ins specifically, both Powell and Prissert view the new platform as a way to catch up with other industries that have long accepted trades to knock down the price of a new product. If you want to buy a new Mercedes, for example, you trade in your current ride and get a better deal. Now you can do the same with the watch sitting in your drawer.

“We wanted to be able to offer customers the same optionality that’s existed in other industries,” Powell says.

With trade-ins, Prissert also sees an opportunity to make Breitling more accessible for people who are looking to put something new on their wrist, but might balk at a several-thousand-dollar price tag.

“It’s also to open the brand to new people that would be very much helped by a good gift certificate credit amount,” he said.

Of course, you already have to be sitting on a pretty nice watch in order to really bring the price down. But if do you have a quality model, a trade-in is a good way to try out something new, and doing it through Breitling ensures a relatively seamless transaction.

This Limited-Edition Omega Seamaster Diver Watch Celebrates an Iconic James Bond Film

How It Works

For someone ready to upgrade, the process is simple enough. Head to Breitling’s trade-in page and choose your watch’s brand from a dropdown menu (the company currently accepts over 30 different brands). Then, fill out a form, upload some images of your timepiece, and submit it. The information goes to Crown & Caliber, where experts review the form and assess the value of your watch using the company’s database. Based on the condition of your ticker and how others like it have sold, the company generates a quote and replies to your submission in one business day.

If you accept it, you’ll get a shipping label to mail your watch to C&C’s processing facility in Atlanta, and once it’s received, you’ll get confirmation of the offer. From there, you can either have the company cut you a check for the value of the watch, or you can get a voucher towards the purchase of a new Breitling model.

Take note: There’s also a sweetener if you choose the voucher. According to Powell and Prissert, Breitling will add a premium on top of your watch’s quoted value if you opt for store credit. Although they wouldn’t provide specifics, Powell said it’s “a meaningful percentage,” of the quote. Try making that happen with your local Mercedes dealer.

New Watches to Look Out for Right Now

With several new watches debuting this fall, now’s a great time to get your hands on a Breitling. Here are the details on our favorites.

The Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown Courtesy of Breitling

Unveiled at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, the Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown is a collaboration between the watchmaker and Slater’s apparel company, Outerknown. It’s an update of Breitling’s classic Superocean dive watch, which was first released in 1957. It comes with a 44-millimeter stainless-steel case and a ratcheted unidirectional bezel—a key feature that allows divers to time their dives accurately. It has a green dial and the hands, numerals, and indexes have a luminescent coating for easy reading in low-light conditions. The launch also included a new Econyl strap made from recycled nylon that will work with any Breitling timepeice, and the strap comes in a range of colors for a rugged look that can match any outfit.

The new Avenger collection launched in September, and these watches are built to the highest standards of reliability and durability and come with some serious performance chops built-in. We like the Super Avenger Chronograph 48 Night Mission, which features a tough, shock-resistant 48-millimeter titanium case that’s designed for use even while wearing gloves. The blue dial’s large numerals are inspired by the stenciled numbers on aircraft carriers, and they’re coated with a luminescent film to make them easy to read no matter where you are. A blue leather strap secures this bold military-inspired watch to your wrist.

The Aviator 8 Mosquito Courtesy of Breitling

This watch is packed with aviation history. We’ll start with the name: It’s a reference to the de Havilland Mosquito, a legendary WWII-era British warplane made almost entirely from wood. Design-wise, the Aviator 8 is also a nod to the on-board clocks that Breitling designed for planes back in the 1930s and 1940s and the company’s famed Co-Pilot watch, which was beloved by aviators for its large, easy-to-read numerals. The watch is powered by a Caliber 01 movement made in-house at Breitling, and it comes with a brushed stainless-steel bezel over a handsome black dial with silver chronograph counters. The red and orange accents on the hands add a pop of color, and there’s some history behind them, too: The colors are inspired by the military roundels painted on Mosquitos during the war.

In honor of the team’s quest for the cup, luxury watchmaker Tudor has released a new timepiece, the limited-edition Black Bay Chrono Dark. The watch is part of Tudor’s global partnership with the All Blacks, who are ambassadors for the brand. And like the players it represents, this watch is built to be extra tough. It’s powered by a COSC-certified movement and features a 41mm matte black steel case, a steel bezel in matte black, a matte black bracelet and clasp, and an anodized aluminum bezel disc with a tachymetric scale. The case, bezel, bracelet, and clasp all get their matte black color through a process called Physical Vapor Deposition, or PVD, where metals are vaporized and then used to coat the surface of the watch—unlike painting, the resulting finish won’t chip.

On the face, it includes features like a chronograph 45-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position and an instant date at 6 o’clock. In addition, it’s waterproof up to 660 feet, so you don’t have to worry about swimming with it.

Rest assured, this watch can definitely handle the bumps and splashes of everyday wear—it’s made for rugby players, after all. Star player Beauden Barrett, who was named the best rugby player in the world in 2016 and 2017, has already reserved watch number 1115.

In other words, if you pick up one of these handsome timepieces, you’ll be in good company.

The Rolex Watch That Marlon Brando Wore in ‘Apocalypse Now’ Is Going Up for Auction

There’s a watch to suit every style and budget, but if you really want to put something memorable on your wrist, mark your calendar: On December 10, Phillips, in association with Bacs & Russo, will auction off a Rolex GMT-Master owned by actor Marlon Brando, Forbes reports. Not only that, it’s the same watch he wore on set during the filming of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 classic Apocalypse Now. How’s that for a piece of history?

The Toughest Watches for Every Summer Adventure

The Best Dress Watches for Every Budget

The watch is the same one worn by Brando’s character, Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, in the film. Brando even engraved the watch himself, inscribing “M. Brando” on the caseback. According to a press release, the watch was long considered lost, but it has actually remained in the actor’s family for decades. Brando gave the watch to his daughter as a graduation gift in 1995, and then she gifted it to her husband on their wedding night in 2003.

“This Rolex GMT-Master is the holy grail of watches owned by Marlon Brando,” said Paul Boutros, Phillips’ Head of Watches, Americas, “and one of the greatest ‘long lost’ watches to finally surface after years of speculation.”

Dream Watches: The Most Lustworthy Timepieces Every Guy Should Have in His Collection

Although it’s famous for appearing in Apocalypse Now, the watch almost didn’t make it into the film. Brando was initially told to remove the watch before filming began, but he protested.

“If they’re looking at my watch,” he said, “then I’m not doing my job as an actor.”

He wore the watch, but removed the bezel—resulting in the unique look seen in the film.

The watch is one of several timepieces up for action by Phillips at the event, titled Game Changers, in December. According to Phillips, all of the watches were owned by “extraordinary people who are considered ‘game changers’ in their fields.”

Brando’s watch is in exceptional condition. The hour markers and hands have aged into a “a gorgeous shade of beige,” the press release states. It’s otherwise undamaged, and comes with a rubber strap—and without the bezel, just how Brando wore it. In a note to his daughter, he wrote about how the timepiece had served him well.

“This watch is like a tank. You can do anything you want to it and it will keep on going.”

Here’s the Right Way to Clean Your Watch Strap

You’d never wear the same pair of socks every day without washing them. The same goes with shirts and just about everything else we put on our bodies. However, there’s often one exception: a watch—specifically the strap. Just like any other material, your watch strap can get dirty, smell, and even be ruined without proper cleanings.

“Cleaning your watch helps maintain its original luster and rinse away any corrosive deposits that may destroy them over time,” says Justin Vrakas, a watch influencer and founder of watchsteez.com, an online vintage watch boutique.

The Right Time to Buy a Pre-Owned Luxury Watch Online

Just as different materials need different cleansers, how often you should clean your timepiece‘s straps depends on how often you’re wearing it and where. If you’re sporting the same watch every day in an active setting where you’re sweating a lot, clean it once every two to three weeks. If you’re rotating watches and mostly wear them to a desk job and happy hours, you can wash them much less often—every three to four months.

Dream Watches: The Most Lustworthy Timepieces Every Guy Should Have in His Collection

To clean your case, Vrakas recommends screwing down your crown tightly to prevent damage and removing any leather straps that could be damaged by liquids. Then, rinse the case in soapy water. Brush away any dirty from small nooks with a gentle brush—like this one from Wrist Clean. An unused toothbrush also works. Pat dry with a soft cloth or old T-shirt and allow to air dry.

After your case is clean, it’s time to clean your strap. Here are our best tips on how to clean them so they look sharp, smell fresh, and last as close to a lifetime as possible.

Leather
Perhaps the trickiest material to clean, leather in general shouldn’t get wet, Vrakas says. “Moisture can stain the leather and cause it to dry out and deteriorate over time,” he explains. If the strap does get wet, dry it immediately with a clean cloth or towel. That includes sweat, which can leave behind corrosive stains that can ruin your watch strap. In other words, wearing a leather strap in an active environment isn’t the best idea.

When you do clean your leather strap, remove it from the case and wipe off debris with a clean cloth. Then apply a leather cleaner or conditioner like these options from Saphir [$ 25; amazon.com] or Wrist Clean [$ 6; wristclean.com]. Massage the conditioner into the leather with a soft cloth to remove dirt and deposits and soften the leather. Wipe clean with a towel. Allow the strap to air dry—overnight if possible. Then, reattach the strap and enjoy a soft feel and no funky smell.

The Best Pilot Watches for Men

Nylon
Synthetic materials like nylon are much easier to clean because you can apply liquid cleaner without having to remove the strap. But because the nylon is often woven, dirt can settle in small nooks that are hard to reach, which requires some extra care.

If your watch is water resistant, start by giving the whole watch a good rinse under water. Then, submerge the strap in warm water with gentle soap and allow it to soak for three to five minutes. Remove the strap and gently scrub away any dirt with a soft brush. Submerge it one more time for a few minutes, and then rinse and pat it dry with a soft cloth. Good as new.

The Best Dive Watches for Every Budget

Rubber or Silicone
These materials are popular in part because they naturally repel dirt and liquid, making them easy to clean and perfect for active guys. They often smell less than more absorbent fabric straps, but over time they can accumulate build-up. You can keep the watch on for this process if it’s water resistant: Give the watch a good rinse just like with the nylon strap. Then submerge the watch in a gentle, abrasive-free jewelry cleaner [$ 8; amazon.com] for a few minutes. Brush your strap clean, if needed, or simply wipe it clean with your hands while rinsing it again under cold water. Pat the watch dry and allow it to air dry overnight, if possible. That way you can not only have a watch strap that smells and feels like new, you’ll help extend its life, too.

10 Under-the-Radar Watch Brands That Are Seriously Stylish

They say you can tell a lot about a man by the timepiece around his wrist. For guys all over the world, a high-quality watch is a daily necessity and a key element in their daily ensemble. When designed well, they serve as the epitome of form meets function, adding a touch of style to any outfit while helping keep track of time.

There are tons of best-in-class watchmakers on the market that are quick to roll off the tongue. Beloved brands range from tried-and-true, casual classics such as Timex and Casio, all the way up to high-end investment pieces like Rolex and Patek Philippe. But what about the watches that don’t carry the same clout as the mainstream competition?

The Best Dress Watches for Every Budget

Today, we’re taking a good, hard look at some of the most underrated watch companies in the game. They might not be top-of-mind for the average consumer, but they certainly deserve a spot on your radar. From durable models to take on your next adventure, to stylish designs that are sure to make a statement, each brand is committed to creating timepieces that are as hard-wearing as they are handsome. Here are 10 of our favorites worth adding to your wishlist.

Jack Mason

The Jack Mason brand was born in the heart of Texas back in 2015, but don’t let that fool you. Their in-house team of passionate experts has more than 50 years of combined industry experience. They’ve come a long way since their humble beginnings, driving an airstream through target markets to demonstrate their wares. Today, their sophisticated watches can be found in storefronts across the country, including Nordstrom, Dillard’s and Hudson Bay. With an international perspective, their timepieces blend Italian leather, Japanese movement, and an American work ethic. Their current models come with a lifetime warranty and are curated into six thoughtfully designed collections: aviation, nautical, field, racing, diving and heritage.

Our top pick: Racing Chronograph 40mm [$ 275; jackmasonbrand.com

Wood In Philosophy

Wood In Philosophy launched in a cozy design studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, drawing inspiration from the great outdoors and minimalist aesthetics. The family-run company creates trend-forward timepieces using high-quality wood in every model. For a more polished look, check out their newly launched Tidefall Collection, which has sophisticated steel accents. Their Fernweh and Skyline Collections embody a more laid-back vibe, with leather straps and sleek watch faces. The company (soon to be rebranded to DVGNT) also offers customized engraving options to add a thoughtful and personalized touch. Plus, they offer free shipping to orders within the U.S. and Canada, and $ 15 flat-rate shipping to a list of approved international destinations.

Our top pick: McWay Zebrawood and Marine Chronograph [$ 185; woodinphilosophy.com]

MONTA

St. Louis, Missouri, is known for lots of things: the Gateway Arch, baseball, and great beer. But now, thanks to MONTA, it can add top-notch watchmaking to the list. MONTA was created in 2015 after its co-founders attended Baselworld in Switzerland and felt the industry needed a breath of fresh air. Today, the brand produces four seriously sharp collections that pay homage to the rich tradition of Swiss watchmaking by working exclusively with Swiss manufactures. Painstaking detail goes into every design, which is evident from the first glance. The bracelets, made of 316L steel are durable but comfortable, and every facet of the case is either polished or brushed to perfection. The price tag skews on the higher end, but the superior quality is worth every penny.

Our top pick: Blue Dial Atlas [$ 1,615; montawatch.com

The Electricianz

Looking for a shocking statement piece that’s guaranteed to inject a jolt of style into any outfit? Then don’t miss the daring designs from The Electricianz, a new Swiss-based company. The brand has already garnered plenty of buzz thanks to their eclectic collection, which is whimsical, wacky, and a bit weird (but awesome nonetheless). Known for their bright colors and exposed skeleton dials, the watches give a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a mechanical timepiece. But for the less bold, The Electricianz offers some slightly more subdued models (like the The Blackout) that still capture the same edge and personality.

Our top pick: The Cable Z [$ 380; the-electricianz.com

ROUE

Alex Iervolino was raised with an appreciation for timeless style and classic cars. The combination of his passions eventually steered him toward the timepiece industry and the creation of ROUE―which means “wheel” in French, a straightforward nod to motoring culture. The microbrand made a splash when it launched in 2017. Its retro styles are inspired by iconic looks from the 1960s-1980s. High-precision Japanese quartz movement, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, and a friendly price point also helped launch the brand’s popularity. Check out their four series, including the CHR, SSD, HDS, and CAL.

Our top pick: CHR One with Black Case and Gunmetal Dial [$ 260; rouewatch.com

Hamilton Watch Company

With roots in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Hamilton Watch Company is now headquartered in Bienne, Switzerland. What began as a pocket watch manufacturing company in 1892 has evolved over the generations. Now, they produce a diverse range of expertly crafted timepieces suited for every style—from dignified formal models to rugged military options. Plus, every purchase includes free ground shipping and an official two-year warranty. With nearly 130 years of experience under their belt, you can trust that these Swiss-made beauties are built to last.

Our top pick: Khaki Navy Scuba Auto [$ 707; hamiltonwatch.com]

Nordgreen

Denmark is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading design destinations, with a time-honored legacy rooted in the space. The philosophy touches virtually every industry, including furniture, fashion, architecture, and more. So it should come as no surprise that the Danes also create stunning timepieces. Nordgreen (“Nord” representing the brand’s Nordic identity, “green” alluding to their commitment to sustainable practices) is a prime example. Based in Copenhagen, the company boasts a handsome lineup of quintessentially Scandinavian watches that embody the sought-after Danish aesthetic, guided by Jakob Wagner―one of the region’s most celebrated designers. With every purchase, a portion of sales goes to one of the brand’s three NGO partners (allowing customers to choose their favorite cause).

Our top pick: The New Philosopher Gold in Brown Leather [$ 220; nordgreen.com]

Brew Watch Co.

Coffee culture is as strong in New York as the jet-black java found in its countless cafes. And in the city that never sleeps, the sacred coffee break isn’t just a daily ritual, but a way of life. This ethos is exactly what inspired Jonathan Ferrer to develop Brew Watch Co. Independently designed and crafted in New York City, the brand pulls its sleek design inspiration from an unlikely source: the espresso machine. Industrial, efficient, and masculine, it’s easy to draw parallels between the two. Head to the website to explore the cozy collection and learn about upcoming releases.

Our top pick: Retrograph Phantom [$ 350; brew-watches.com]

Vaer

Anyone in search of a watch that strikes the perfect balance between affordability and durability should set their sights on Vaer. Ryan Torres and Reagan Cook founded the Los Angeles-based brand in 2015 with the vision of creating value-driven watches for the modern man to wear with confidence in any setting. Every watch is hand-assembled and tested in Los Angeles by a team of Swiss-trained technicians. Their impressive collection includes key features like easily interchangeable bands, 10ATM depth rating, sapphire crystal, and Swiss quartz movement. With a dedication to the outdoors, a percentage of sales goes to supporting environmental non-profits. The brand punches high above its price point and is sure to please.

Our top pick: Field White Nylon [$ 175; vaerwatches.com

Courtesy Image

Stührling

In-the-know watch enthusiasts have probably heard the name Stührling before (and maybe even own one or two of their own), but they’re still widely under-the-radar to the everyday consumer, despite a storied past. One of the first true internet watch companies, the brand launched in 1999, years before the advent of Facebook, Wikipedia, or the iPhone. Today, they’re still churning out eye-catching designs that are worn on the wrists of more than 15 million customers worldwide. Their extensive array of products includes models fit for every style and price range, from bargain steals at under $ 100 to heavy hitters clocking in well over the $ 1,000 threshold.

Our top pick: The New Celestia 897 Quartz 42mm Classic [$ 195; stuhrling.com]

Here’s How You Can Watch The ‘NBA 2K20’ Player Ratings Reveal Live

Anthony Davis x NBA 2K Developers To Reveal 'NBA 2K20' On Twitter

Source: 2K / Visual Concepts

The basketballs have stopped bouncing in NBA arenas for now, but the folks at 2K and Visual Concepts are hard at work on the upcoming installment in the super-popular NBA 2K franchise. The studio announced at the beginning of the month that Anthony Davis and Dwyane Wade are the game’s next cover athletes. Tonight we will find out what superstars ratings in the basketball simulator will look like.

The fun begins 8 PM ET/5 PM PT when Anthony Davis alongside NBA 2K developers will unveil the ratings for the “most anticipated” superstars in NBA 2K20 from Twitter’s San Francisco main headquarters. Joining the Los Angeles Lakers latest acquisition will be Ronnie2K,  Alexis Morgan, and Chris Manning. Fans are encouraged to join in on the conversation by using the hashtag #2KRatings, where they voice their approval or disapproval of their favorite NBA players overall rating in the game.

Before tonight’s upcoming Twitter event, fans have already been treated to screens of how AD, Jimmy Butler, and Kemba Walker will look in the next installment in the 2K franchise.

While some of me see this as no big deal, some players really take it to heart if they feel their ratings in the video game doesn’t accurately match their skills in real life. Kyle Kuzma took his anger to Twitter to voice his displeasure about being rated 78 in NBA2K19 while Ben Simmons was not too pleased about receiving an 87 overall rating in the game. No disrespect that is pretty high for a guy in the league who doesn’t have a jump shot…yet.

We are definitely looking forward to seeing all of these NBA players react to their virtual counterparts ratings, it’s definitely going to be entertaining. This is a clear case why 2K is more than just a video game, it’s a lifestyle at this point. We are curious to see what Zion Williamson’s 2K rating will be. To be apart of the moment, click here, NBA 2K20 arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC September 6, 2019.

Elon Musk Confirms At #E32019 You Will Be Able To Play Games & Watch YouTube In Your Tesla

Elon Musk Confirms 'Fallout Shelter' & More Apps Coming To Tesla Cars

Source: Charley Gallay / Getty

Tesla Cars can already do a bevy of things regular vehicles cannot, speaking with Bethesda Games, Todd Howard at E3, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk confirmed the Tesla owners will be able to play games, watch YouTube and use more apps in their electric cars on the ample built-in touchpad screen.

Musk revealed that drivers will be able to play Fallout Shelter, Bethesda’s free mobile game based on the popular Fallout franchise that was released in back in 2015. The game will be joining the list of already confirmed titles which includes the insanely challenging platformer Cuphead, Atari Classics such as Missile CommandAsteroidsLunar Lander, and Centipede which all arrived in the vehicle last August.

Not a gamer, no problem, Musk also confirmed that the popular video streaming app YouTube will also be coming to his Tesla vehicles as well. He flexed creative muscle, even more, when he revealed that drivers will be able to play a game called Buggy Racing 2 by using the car’s steering wheel, accelerator, and brake showing off the fantastic capability in a clip.

Other things Musk spoke on during the panel included his next big launch and even a weird”hits blunt” moment where he suggested that human existence could be someone’s video game and we are all the characters in the game.

Word?

No word on when the updates will arrive in the Tesla cars but when they do we will definitely update you on it. You can watch the entire panel featuring Musk below.

The Latest Timex + Todd Snyder Watch Is the Perfect Father’s Day Present

Todd Snyder just has a gift for finding the sweet spot between nostalgic romance and modern feasibility. His savvy blend of contemporary fashion with timeless style comes through in most of his designs—though we particularly love the collaborations. The brand’s latest collab with legendary watch brand Timex is one for the ages.

Introducing the Timex + Todd Snyder Welton Bi-Metal Quartz watch.

timex todd
Todd Snyder

The story goes something like this: While browsing through the Timex archives one day, Todd’s eye was captured by a long-forgotten timepiece that seemed achingly familiar. But this was more than simple nostalgia. The Mercury looked just like the watch Todd imagined his own father wore. It had a silver face and a brown leather strap, with just a hint of gold. Somehow, the old Timex seemed rugged and elegant at the same time. Classy, but tough. Todd was determined to bring this overlooked classic back to life according to today’s exacting standards.

So to honor the memory and style of Todd Snyder’s father, and of every dad who wore a Timex with class and grace, the Welton Bi-Metal brings yet another classic into the 21st century. Just in time for Father’s Day.

The Perfect Father’s Day Gift

Originally named the Mercury, the new Timex + Todd Snyder Welton Bi-Metal ($ 158) retains the sleek, form-follows-function appeal of mid-century design while incorporating the latest in timekeeping technology. The original V-Conic has been replaced with quartz movement. A 34mm stainless steel case houses a brushed silver face with simple, elegant gold numerals and hands, and it’s capped by a domed acrylic crystal and adorned with a subtle 18mm lug. Bound with a brown leather strap, the aesthetic of the casual but classy Welton Bi-Metal hearkens back to the golden age of American design.

Water resistant up to 30 meters, the Welton Bi-Metal is perfectly sized and elegant without being flashy. It still exudes a rugged grace, and its style will let you take it from the office to the workshop without missing a beat. Of all the Timex + Todd Snyder collaborations, this is the one we’d most like to give—or get—for Father’s Day.

So here’s to dads everywhere. Thanks for showing us, day in and day out, that men can be rugged and classy at the same time.

The Right Time to Buy a Pre-Owned Luxury Watch Online

CLAD IN A white lab coat and sitting at a large wood workbench in the corner of a workshop with views of the woods out back, Charles Emslie grabs a magnifying loupe and casts his gaze on a 1989 Rolex Submariner 16610. The stainless steel watch with a black bezel probably sold for around $ 1,500 when it was released, but today it is prized by collectors and can fetch as much as $ 8,000—if it’s in mind condition.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case with this Rolex. “The watch is old enough that the oils have degraded and gotten dirty and dried out,” Emslie says. “It needs a complete overhaul.”

technicians and watchmakers in the company's workshop
Technicians and watchmakers in the company’s workshop Wedig & Laxton Photo

With that, Emslie, 32, who’s been repairing fine watches for a decade, prepares to go inside the Submariner and take it apart piece by piece. This is no simple task. The mechanical watch, which is powered by the movement of the wearer’s arm, comprises hundreds of pieces—some “only a little thicker than a human hair,” Emslie says. To inspect the Rolex, Emslie will use an array of specialized tools, everything from millimeter-size screwdrivers to wooden tweezers—you don’t have to worry about scratches quite as much with the wood ones, he explains. From there, certain key parts of the watch, including its automatic movement, will be placed in a cleaning machine called the Greiner Vibrograf ACS900 in a nearby room. The case, meanwhile, will be washed separately in something called an Elma Ultrasonic Tank. Then Emslie will put it all back together, testing and retesting the rehabbed timepiece to ensure precision accuracy.

EMSLIE IS AMONG a team of watchmakers, technicians, and refinishers here at the headquarters of Crown & Caliber, a watch retailer based in Atlanta that buys and sells pre-owned luxury timepieces online. Since it launched in 2013, the company says, it has had more than 40,000 transactions.

Crown & Caliber was founded by Hamilton Powell, an Atlanta native with a background in finance. He got the idea after a friend described what he went through when he tried to sell a rare Rolex Day Date. After posting the watch on eBay, the friend was besieged by scammers. With estimates of the timepiece’s value all over the map, he was unsure of an asking price, until he finally sold it for $ 5,500 to a mom-and-pop jewelry shop—which flipped it for more than twice that amount.

pre-owned watches can cost as much as $ 50,000
Pre-owned watches can cost as much as $ 50,000. Wedig & Laxton Photo

Sensing an opportunity, Powell did some research. He learned, to his surprise, that the U.S. market for high-end mechanical watches is some $ 5 billion a year. “Some estimate that the pre-owned industry is more than double that,” Powell says. But that pre-owned market was like the Wild West. “Pre-owned watches are traded in back alleys, and pawnshops, and on forums or on eBay and Craigslist,” Powell says. “I thought, ‘We can make it easier and more trusted, a better way to buy a watch.’”

So he set out to do just that, launching Crown & Caliber with a small team and a single watchmaker. “I remember a couple of nights at 1:00, looking for a lost watch part in the carpet of our office with a flashlight,” Powell says. Today, the company has about 60 full-time employees, including watchmakers, refinishers, and customer-service staff.

Pre-owned watches are traded in back alleys, and pawnshops, and on forums or on eBay and Craigslist. I thought, ‘We can make it easier and more trusted, a better way to buy a watch.’

Crown & Caliber takes the guesswork and uncertainty out of the process. Sellers know they’re getting a fair price, and buyers can be assured that what they’re getting is authentic and in tip-top shape. Would-be sellers fill out an online form, answering a series of questions. The company sends back a quote, based on a proprietary database that analyzes how much similar watches have sold in the past. “We’re not using our gut; we’re not using just a hunch,” Powell says. “We’re using real data to determine what we’re going to pay.”

Crown & Caliber founder Hamilton Powell
Crown & Caliber founder Hamilton Powell Wedig & Laxton Photo

Once Crown & Caliber gets hold of the watch and confirms its authenticity, the real work begins. First, the team tests the watch in a Witschi analyzing machine to determine accuracy. If they find that it’s not keeping time the way it’s supposed to—like the Submariner being worked on by Emslie—it goes to the workshop, where repairs are made. From there, the watch is refinished, polished up, and photographed, before being posted as for sale on the site. Watch experts are on hand to guide buyers through the process, patiently answering questions about what makes a particular timepiece special or why two watches that look identical can vary widely in price.

Meet the Watch Experts: Crown & Caliber

Those prices are nothing to sniff at. At the lower end of the scale, a Baume & Mercier Clifton Club watch can go for about $ 1,250. At the upper end, hardcore collectors will spend from $ 40,000 to $ 50,000 for an automatic 2010 Patek Philippe Nautilus or 2015 IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater Limited Edition— roughly what you’d pay for a Mercedes-Benz SLC Roadster.

BACK IN THE Crown & Caliber workshop, Emslie turns his attention from the Rolex to a Patek Philippe Complications Annual Calendar, an automatic watch with a solid white-gold case that can fetch as much as $ 50,000. The Patek is “less than two years old, in my estimation,” Emslie says. His main job with this Patek isn’t to disassemble it—he just needs to make sure it’s not a fake and then get back to the seller with an offer. (It is, in fact, real.)

Next comes something slightly more affordable than the Patek: a Breitling Chronomat A13050 that Emslie says costs around a couple of grand. It’s a good way to end a Tuesday—Breitlings happen to be among Emslie’s favorites. “Stainless steel, white dial, very pretty movement,” he says, somewhat wistfully. “It’s reliable, it’s accurate, it’s a beast.”

China’s New Wave of Designers to Watch in Shanghai

SHANGHAI — China’s consumption power has left an indelible mark on global retail, but could its creative potential rise to that same level of impact? The jury remains out, but many attempts are being made, none more visibly than at Shanghai Fashion Week.
The event returns Wednesday and figures as China’s best place for fashion talents to showcase their collections and do serious business.
“I expect to see new creative directors to come out from this group in the near future,” said Burak Cakmak, the dean of Parsons School of Design. “In recent years, Chinese fashion designers have proven their creativity’s global relevance through the recognition they are getting at international prizes and during global fashion weeks.”
“They truly believe in what they are doing, and are not led by trend, established designers or even the market,” said Angelica Cheung, editor in chief of Vogue China. “For them, design has nothing to do with nationality, gender or age, but to express the vision. I think that’s what makes their works convincing to worldwide audiences.”
Influencer Susanna Lau, better known as Susie Bubble, has been attending Shanghai Fashion Week for the last few seasons. She had a new appreciation for what’s happening there. She said,

Ones to Watch: Phyllis Chan and Suzzie Chung of YanYan

Can sustainable fashion be both polished and quirky?
Hong Kong-based designers and childhood best friends Phyllis Chan and Suzzie Chung are banking on it with their premium knitwear brand YanYan, which utilizes deadstock and leftover yarns from mills and knitwear factories.
The two are aiming to create a youth factor around sustainability, blending grandma elegance with a playful spirit in their designs, and simultaneously touching on hot-button issues facing the fashion industry — including low-waste production, experimental retail strategy, reacting to the pace and competitiveness of fast fashion, and putting out product with more long-term, less trend-driven, potential.
“We thought about what’s a good and interesting way to create product,” Chan said on a call with Chung from Hong Kong, adding: “We didn’t want to put stuff out there that doesn’t contribute anything new. We wanted to make sweaters that were special. We wanted to challenge ourselves and make sweaters that aren’t traditional. The knitwear market is starting to grow. It’s a space for people to have fun and experiment.”
Knitwear was a natural venture for Chan, too, who moved back to Hong Kong after spending nearly a decade at Rag & Bone in New York, most recently as the director of knitwear until

5 Things You Should Consider When Buying a Pre-Owned Watch

When it comes to shopping for your next luxury watch, you should begin your search by first asking yourself a few simple questions.

“What is your budget? Start there,” says Nathan Nerswick, a client services manager at Crown & Caliber, the Atlanta-based online watch shop where you can sell luxury timepieces and buy everything from a used OMEGA Speedmaster to a Rolex GMT-Master II.

“A lot of people don’t want to talk about money, but I think that’s kind of a baseline,” Nerswick tells Men’s Journal in the video above. “You need to be able to say, ‘Hey, I’m willing to spend $ 5,000.’ Cool, let’s look at $ 5,000 watches.”

Inside the Lab: Crown & Caliber, the Online Luxury Watch Shop

Knowing your budget can help you narrow down your search, especially when you’re looking at the endless options online. Next, Nerswick explains to also focus on the other watches you own. “There’s a big difference between it being your first watch or your fifth watch,” he says, “and so that can really inform the direction we’re going.” But there’s plenty more to consider, especially for the place you’re buying the watch from.

“When you’re looking to buy a watch from anyone—certainly online—the No. 1 thing you need to ask them is if they have actual trained watchmakers,” says Jason Allen, Crown & Caliber’s chief marketing officer. The online shop has its own in-house watchmakers in Atlanta who authenticate and work on every watch that goes up on the brand’s website.

The Wu-Tang Clan remain as one of Hip-Hop’s greatest collectives and helped transform the industry in the ’90s with an innovative approach of promoting each member as prominent solo acts. With the recent 25th anniversary of the Clan’s Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers debut LP, a new docu-series from Showtime, Of Mics And Men, digs into the lives of the Shaolin swordsmen.

Deadline reports:

As the group marks the 25th anniversary of their breakout debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the series looks back on their career, combining intimate and reflective interviews from each of the nine living members with never-before-seen archival footage and performances. Of Mics and Men follows the founding members – RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Masta Killa and Cappadonna – many of whom were childhood friends in the hardscrabble world of ’70s and ’80s Staten Island and Brooklyn. Their ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit brought them together to overcome the poverty, violence and oppression of their neighborhoods. But it was music and their shared lyrical genius that allowed them to form the most recognized musical movement in the world, all while walking the treacherous tightrope that links business with brotherhood.

Pied Piper of Paperwork: R. Kelly Threatening To Sue Everybody Over Doc He Didn’t Watch

Source: R. Kelly (aka Robert Sylvester Kelly) 25 Strong: The BET Silver Anniversary Celebration Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, California- 26.10.05 Featuring: R. Kelly (aka Robert Sylvester Kelly) Where: Los Angeles, California, United States When: 27 Oct 2005 Credit: David Livingston / WENN

R. Kelly’s name is the equivalent of hot garbage after the airing of Lifetime’s 6-part documentary, Surviving R. Kelly. Despite reportedly not actually watching any of the doc, the R&B crooner is threatening to sue those involved.

Good luck with that.

Reports TMZ:

Sources in day-to-day contact with R. Kelly tell TMZ, the singer is “disgusted” by the series, which makes shocking allegations against him including sex with various underage girls, physical abuse and mind control. People interviewed say he’s running a sex cult.

The sources say R. Kelly views the series as a “vendetta” against him by producers and others who have hated him throughout his professional career.

We’re told R. Kelly’s team downloaded him on the various people who appeared on the show and he claims he doesn’t even know half of them. He claims the other half hate him for various personal and professional reasons.

We doubt the “I don’t even know her” defense would work in court. But then again, the crooner has gotten away with his alleged abuse for years.

Nevertheless, a source told TMZ,  “He’s going to sue everybody who had anything to do with this.”

We also doubt that R’uh really has the coin to “sue everybody” now that the jig is up and those concerts keep getting canceled.

Ones to Watch: Studio ALCH, C2H4 and Feng Chen Wang on the Power of Streetwear and Brand Collaborations

LONDON — Designers from around the world have been coming in waves to London Fashion Week Men’s and among the newest names on the calendar are Studio ALCH, C2H4 and Feng Chen Wang. But while they may be new to the London runways, they’ve already garnered international attention, having worked with brands such as Nike, Levi’s, Kappa and Converse.
The Australian designer Alexandra Hackett of Studio ALCH, who creates new garments from repurposed Nike pieces, said she’s come to London to be better integrated into the international market. “Australia is quite geographically removed, which is reflected in its industry. London is more of an internationally recognized city and you can create product that, perhaps, has more markets in different countries across the world,” she said.
Hackett caught Nike’s attention early on and the famous swoosh has become her brand’s trademark. The sportswear giant has also sponsored some of her designs. Hackett has snared celebrity fans such as Kendrick Lamar, who has worn Studio ALCH’s boiler suit made from reconstructed Nike bags, and British Grime rappers Stormzy and Skepta.
“I was always interested in Nike from a branding perspective and thought it would be a really interesting brand to work with in terms of their

What to Watch: Up Next for Fur Industry, Furriers

Last year was a momentous one for designer labels vowing to go fur-free. Michael Kors, Gucci, Burberry and Versace are among the ones that did so. Whether the trend continues into 2019 is a matter up for debate — as is the entire “fur” or “no fur” issue.
Last month, Chanel joined the antifur brigade — although the brand’s use of fur has always been minimal — and also pledged to stop using exotic skins. Before its pre-fall Métiers d’Art show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chanel said it would “no longer use exotic skins in our future creations.”
The exotic skins in question include crocodile, lizard, snake and stingray. Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel fashion and president of Chanel SAS, said, “The future of high-end products will come from the know-how of what our atelier is able to do.”
Michael Kors Inc. — now called Capri Holdings — was one of the leading brands that agreed to go fur-free in 2017 along with Jimmy Choo, which Kors also owns. Kors had been targeted by animal rights activists over the years (most noticeably during a Q&A with the designer in June at the Metropolitan Museum). What to Watch: What’s Making a Splash in Contemporary This Spring

Neon and tie-dyed looks, cargo pants, animal prints, tailored pantsuits and skirt suits, slipdresses, rocker-inspired jackets and grunge are touted to be key looks in the contemporary department this spring. That’s the word from fashion directors of department and specialty stores, as well as web sites, who were polled about what they consider to be spring’s biggest trends.
Here’s what they had to say.
Heather Shimokawa, vice president for fashion direction, ready-to-wear at Bloomingdale’s:
“Leopard print was a huge fall trend and we are really excited about the evolution of animal print for spring with great snakeskin and colorful leopard prints. Our customer loves this print and we will see updated versions on T-shirts, wrap dresses and denim. We are also loving the newer silhouettes for spring with wraps, ties and knots that span across all categories from dresses, belted shorts and pants to fresh swim styles. Wide-leg jean that emerged last season will be everywhere this spring in all lengths — cropped, full and flared. The wash is lighter with a vintage Seventies feel. What is really new is the way designers stretched the category beyond the jean — we are excited about the jumpsuits, tailored denim dresses and skirts that we are

Ones to Watch: Tiziano Guardini

For Italian designer Tiziano Guardini, sustainability is a personal matter. “I’m a vegetarian and I really have this almost primordial need to go back to living in harmony with nature, to respect it,” he said. After graduating in economics, Guardini decided to join the KOEFIA fashion academy in Rome where he followed a master’s degree in product management. He then started to collaborate with local ateliers, but taking part in AltaRoma’s Limited/Unlimited project in 2012 was the real turning point in his career. “It’s an initiative promoting free creativity without any commercial purpose and it was such a good opportunity for me because for the first time I looked into myself and told a story [close to my heart],” Guardini recalled.
In sync with that edition’s “Sculptural” theme, Guardini presented statement garments including coats made of pine needles and sculptural dresses crafted from licorice roots. After the project, he decided to develop his sustainable approach in more contemporary pieces, as he made it his mission to have “everybody dressing in a sustainable way in the future.” He gradually started to research more common eco-friendly materials to introduce in his offering, beginning with cruelty-free silk.
“The ultimate mission is to create products respecting nature as

Ones to Watch: Courtney Pellow

Determined not to be defeated by New Zealand’s isolation — and before she had even launched her brand — emerging Auckland-based designer Courtney Pellow flew to New York earlier this year to find a showroom. Zannick Studio took her on and she didn’t have to wait long to get noticed.
In September, Gigi Hadid attracted international media attention when she stepped out at Milan Fashion Week in a pair of the designer’s eye-catching patchwork Up-Cycled Sock Pants.
Handmade from faulty wool socks discarded by a New Zealand manufacturer and retailing on Pellow’s web store for 1,196 New Zealand dollars or $ 821 at current exchange, the pants were among several pieces from the designer’s debut collection that were loaned to Hadid’s stylist.
A day later, Hadid was photographed again in another Courtney Pellow style: the White Camo Cropped Jean, a relaxed-fit, mid-rise jean in a camouflage print with contrast denim waistband and patch pockets.
While upcycling accounts for just 20 percent of Pellow’s production, sustainability is front of mind for the Auckland University of Technology graduate, who is using organic cotton in her T-shirts.
Other repurposed products include the Up-Cycled Sock Jumper and a range of Bush Shirts crafted from vintage wool blankets that Pellow sources from

Ones to Watch: Maggie Marilyn

Determined to be a business that is on board with the New Zealand government’s plan to be a carbon-zero country by 2050, Maggie Marilyn is trying to do its part on a variety of levels. The company’s namesake said, “As a proudly New Zealand-made business, we are acutely aware that our location means shipping materials further because of our geographical isolation. We are now starting our journey to learn, understand and, therefore, be able to calculate our carbon footprint. Kelly Slater on Outerknown’s New Breitling Watch Collaboration, the 2020 Summer Olympics, and More

We caught up with surfing icon Kelly Slater in New York during the launch of the Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown watch, the result of a year-long collaboration between his clothing brand Outerknown and Breitling. Read our full interview below.

Men’s Journal: How did you team up to make this watch happen?
Kelly Slater: Breitling contacted us [Outerknown, the clothing brand Slater co-founded in 2015] about a year ago to talk about this idea and putting together a group of a squad with [pro surfers] Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons, who are both long-time friends of mine. Breitling really wanted to represent what we mean to our sport, and give us the opportunity to include Outerknown by letting us design the watch bands.

How to Surf for the First Time

So what’s unique about the band?
It’s made with Econyl, a yarn made with recycling fishing nets pulled from the ocean and then re-spinning back into a threading. We’ve created jackets that use it so the whole thing can be recycled. That was part of our beginning and why we launched the brand.

You’ve made your own surfboards and wave machines, so what made you get into clothing?
I just knew that something smelled a little fishy in the way clothing was made, so to speak. There was an epiphany moment. I was doing a fast for six days, I was just drinking water and about four or five days into that, I had just the clearest thoughts ever. I thought I’ve got to find out where our clothes are made when I was with another clothing company. I’ve got to find out who makes the clothes and where they’re made and what goes into it, and I need to know that whole thing because it’s provided me with so much in my life and I don’t know really anything about it. So, I started asking questions and I started getting roadblocks.

This sounds like a conspiracy theory.
I would say that it actually is. I went to a guy who worked for that company who was an artist—I’d known the guy for 20 or 30 years and figured he’d tell me. I went to his office, and I said, “Hey, I want to talk to you about something. I feel like I can get the answer from you before anyone else.” And he goes, “I don’t think you’re going to like the answers.” And he literally stood up and went and shut his door to his office and he said, “Alright, you want to talk about this? You’re just not going to like what you hear, because they’re going to buy everything as cheaply as they possibly can and make it for as little as possible, with people who don’t get paid very well, and don’t have a living wage and all that.”

OUTERKNOWN_KELLY_SLATER_BTS

You’d think for a clothing brand co-owned by a world-famous athlete, your photo would be plastered all over the website. But it’s not.
There were thoughts of calling it Slater, but I just want it to be about the clothing and more about the ideas than it was about me. My goal was to make good clothes the right way and let that stand the test of time. To me, it was more about creating this brand than it was trying to promote myself. Look, I’m proud of what I’ve done. It’s allowed me to have the access to create this company and get people that believe in the things I believe in and see what this could do in an industry that’s allowed that to happen because of what I’ve done. So, of course, I’m very proud of my accomplishments. I didn’t necessarily want to go and run the risk of being cheesy and “go buy Slater stuff.”

So are you adding clothing designer to your resume?
Well, the Apex Trunk is probably my signature piece because that’s what I live in. I worked on all aspects of the design on that trunk, but I don’t have the time to go in there and work on everything. I’m happy with it being tied to me saying the Apex predator. To me, I want to be a great white shark. When I compete, I want to be that top guy. It’s surprising that it’s not all neon though—when I was a kid everything on my surfboards was all orange and green.

I read that if you compete in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, it might be your last competition?
Yes, I wouldn’t say it would be my last event. I’ll probably still surf events for five years after I compete here and there. But I’m looking at potentially next year being my last full-time competitive year. And if I made the Olympics, then I would probably still compete somewhat consistently in the beginning of that year 2020, just to keep myself fresh and alert on how I need to compete, so I won’t be nervous at that time.

The 65 Best Surf Spots in the World

What does it mean for surfing to make it into the Olympics?
I can clearly see either side of it. I could be totally fine without surfing in the Olympics and I can be totally behind it as well. I see the benefit of it, and I also see that we do have a world tour that determines the best surfer in the world each year over the course of a whole year and all different kinds of conditions and I think the best surfer of the year ends up being a world champion. The pressure that’s put on the Olympics, I think, is really going to make the cream rise to the top, because you’re going to have to be just so confident in your game and what you’re doing, and decisive about that on that day, that somebody who is just a natural is going to win that thing.

You’ve been known to chase waves around the world. How do you pinpoint where the surf’s going to be?
When I first started, I had no idea. I would wake up in the morning when I was a little kid I’d take the wax off my board and my friends and I would ride our bike as fast as you can down to the beach. And most days in Florida it was nothing. As a kid, I didn’t know what made waves, I just knew that sometimes I’d wake up and the waves are big, and the wind is good. Then as a teenager, I meet a guy named Sean Collins who had a thing called Wave Track, which turned into what is now probably the biggest surf forecasting site in the world called Surfline. I was good friends with him from the time I was about 13 or 14, and he used to show me swell maps and how he would get weather maps from, say, Australia in June and July. He would be able to read what the storms are doing near New Zealand and he would know 10 days later those were going to hit the California coast. So he would have a good idea of size and interval. And then you look at local wind charts to see how it’s going to be affecting the local conditions.

The Essentials: 5 Must-have Items for Surfing

I started to learn this stuff as a kid and then, through the websites and the apps that those guys have created over the years, it’s basically almost like you can self-teach any of this stuff. You go look at it and you get a good idea about how it works. But luckily there are still a few secrets about how to read them, because I love to go to Fiji and some of the websites will give an incorrect forecast and people don’t understand how to read it. If you know how to read it, it’s really obvious.

Breitling Surfers Squad member Kelly Slater wearing his Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown
Breitling Surfers Squad member Kelly Slater wearing his Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown(PPR/Breitling) Courtesy image

Once you hang up surfing competitively, what will you be doing?
I would say for probably a year or two I’ll travel more than I do right now. More short [surf] trips, just strike missions, like chase a swell. Right now I’ve been injured for the last year and a bit so I haven’t traveled, I haven’t chased a lot of swells down. But when I’m done competing full-time I’ll just have my eye constantly on what the ocean is doing around the world, and if I see a good swell in Namibia in July, I might go for two days. Last week, I was going to go to the Northwest coast of Africa and surf but I just kind of didn’t have the time.

Who is the next Kelly Slater?
The next guy is a kid name Eli Hanneman from Maui, he’s 15 and he’s unbelievable.

Samantha is not living the life she thought she was living. Teenager Samantha Rhodes has wandered the desert since her war-torn childhood in bleakest solitude, until the day she discovers an animatronic genie in the sand capable of reversing her fortunes, and fulfilling her wildest wishes.  After a chance encounter with a starving stranger named Ryder begging for help from a distant village, Samantha and her genie Adam rediscover the outside oases in all their revenge-driven brutality. And from the curious way the lizards and birds watch her with glassy eyes, the way the stars in the sky grow exponentially in number during nights of tragedy, and the way captured raiders whisper of a blue goddess wandering in the darkness, Samantha finds herself drawn deeper into a superstitious world filled more with mystery than with terror. And within the wreckage of secret, ancient tunnels beneath the moonlit sands, Samantha discovers why the god of her oasis has given her a magical, weaponized genie.  Along with the frightening truth about the stars in their midnight skies.
