NBA, Nike to Tribute Kobe and Gianna Bryant at All-Star Weekend

The Black Mamba and Mambacita are getting a tribute from the NBA at All-Star Weekend in Chicago from Feb. 14 through 16.
The NBA, NBAPL and Nike have edited the recently unveiled All-Star uniforms to pay homage to Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, and their seven friends and teammates that passed away in a helicopter accident on Sunday.

LONDON — From the Royal Albert Hall to Whitehall, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex both spent much of the weekend wearing black for a series of Remembrance Sunday events.
Remembrance Sunday takes place in Britain on the second weekend in November and is meant to honor the men and women who died in World War I, World War II and in conflict during the 20th and 21st centuries.

On Sunday morning, royals and members of the British armed forces and their families gathered at Whitehall, near Downing Street, for the laying of memorial wreaths, tributes and prayers at the Cenotaph war memorial.
Queen Elizabeth and members of her family gathered on balconies overlooking the memorial. The Duchess of Cambridge wore an Alexander McQueen coat dress with a zip front, frogging and fringe details, while the Duchess of Sussex donned a Stella McCartney coat with a double D-ring buckle.
On Saturday night, the duchesses and their husbands, Prince William and Prince Harry, joined other royals and politicians, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds, at the Festival of Remembrance, an annual musical event at Royal

The Lost Weekend (1945) – Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder - The Lost Weekend (1945) artwork

The Lost Weekend (1945)

Billy Wilder

Genre: Drama

Price: $ 4.99

Release Date: November 16, 1945

The Best Picture of 1945 has lost none of its bite or power in this uncompromising look at the devastating effects of alcoholism. Ironically, this brilliant Billy Wilder film was almost never released because of poor reaction by preview audiences unaccustomed to such stark realism from Hollywood, but the film has since gone on to be regarded as one of the all-time great dramas in movie history. Ray Milland's haunting portrayal of a would-be writer's dissatisfaction with his life leads him on a self-destructive three-day binge. Filled with riveting imagery, the multiple Academy Award®-winner offers an unforgettable view of life on the edge.

Macy’s Is Having a Huge Sale on Outerwear This Weekend Only

The days may be slowly getting longer, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to ignore an amazing deal if it crosses our desk. This weekend only at Macy’s, men’s coats and jackets are 50 percent off. Sound good? It gets even better. Right now, that outerwear sale is part of Macy’s VIP event. That means you can take an additional 30 percent off using the code VIP.

Our 2019 Spring Gear Issue Is Here—Just in Time for Your Next Adventure

It’s true. Killer coats and jackets from names like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and more are drastically reduced at Macy’s.com this weekend. Through Sunday, March 24, enter the code VIP at checkout and stock up on this year’s hottest styles.

It’s certainly not too late. Even though spring is finally springing, there are dozens of great deals at Macy’s on quality outerwear for this season and beyond. Not just on heavy winter coats, either. We’re talking rain coats and jackets, car and top coats. We’re talking leather jackets, puffers, and stretch wool. And there’s so much more.

So don’t let the calendar trick you into thinking it’s okay to shave your head and bust out the shorts and flip-flops. March may be winding down, but April’s showers are on the way, and May is yet to come. It’s not going to be warm enough for short sleeves for a while. So even if you think you’re all set for the next couple of months, you can’t afford not to stock up for fall, or even next winter.

Get It: Grab amazing deals on coats, jackets, and outerwear at Macy’s VIP event (use code VIP) through March 24.

London Fog Durham Classic-Fit Raincoat

Available in classic British Khaki or black, the iconic Durham ($ 122) exudes classic style. It’s ideal for taking on April’s showers—as well as October’s. It’s even machine washable. Best of all, it originally cost $ 350.

Get It: Pick up the London Fog Durham Classic-Fit Raincoat (originally $ 350) for only $ 122 at Macy’s.

Macys

Calvin Klein Minneapolis Slim-Fit Overcoat

Originally $ 495, this gorgeous overcoat is marked down to $ 100. After you enter the code VIP, the price drops to a mind-blowing $ 70. A sumpuous blend of wool, nylon, and cashmere, it features a contemporary slim silhouette and fully lined interior.

Get It: Pick up the Calvin Klein Minneapolis Slim-Fit Overcoat (originally $ 495) now only $ 70 at Macy’s.

Macys

Tommy Hilfiger Quilted Vest

Available in red, black, or grey, this perfect-for-spring quilted vest ($ 39) is a must-have. Figure in the VIP Event discount, and you really can’t afford not to pick it up.

Get It: Pick up the Tommy Hilfiger Quilted Vest (originally $ 150) now only $ 39.

Macys

Michael Kors Leather Moto Jacket

Every guy should have at least one leather jacket in his closet. A classic silhouette with enduring style and cozy perforations at the yoke, this jacket from Michael Kors ($ 196) originally cost $ 595.

Get It: Pick up the Michael Kors Leather Moto Jacket (originally $ 595) now only $ 280 at Macy’s.

Macys

DKNY Dutch Navy/Black Camo Peacoat

Cool and camo, we can’t imagine why this stylish peacoat is even marked down, let alone still available. The subtle, deep-tone camouflage pattern and double-breasted design of this medium weight DKNY peacoat ($ 56) exude fresh metropolitan style. It was orginally $ 395!

Get It: Pick up the DKNY Dutch Navy/Black Camo Peacoat (originally $ 395) now $ 56 at Macy’s.

Macys

Nautica Quilted Stretch Reversible Jacket

Double your possiblilities with this quilted reversible jacket ($ 87), originally $ 250. It’s available in two styles: navy/red (shown), and black/grey.

Larry and Toby Milstein Expand ‘Millennial Pink Party’ Into Weekend Long Retreat

The second annual Millennial Pink Party takes to the Hamptons this weekend, and this year the concept has been expanded into a full weekend of events with the help of partners like BCBGeneration, Bloomingdale’s and The Class by Taryn Toomey.
Millennial Pink Party made its debut last year as the re-branded take on the Milstein family’s annual summer Hamptons bash. Real estate scions Larry and Toby Milstein embraced the rosy hue and moved the party to the Breakers in Montauk to lure the young Manhattan social crowd for the party, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign.
After its success, the one-night event has grown into a weekend, which begins tonight with a private beachside dinner hosted by Whispering Angel. The guest list for Friday night is made up of the Millennial Pink Founders Collective, who are categorized as “a handpicked group of 25 VIP taste makers who will serve as social ambassadors for the Millennial Pink community and provide creative direction on the event.”
Come Saturday, celebrity workout favorite Taryn Toomey will host a session of her workout The Class for guests, followed by the official party at night and a brunch to close things out on Sunday.
The event last year raised more than $ 15,000 for

Hundred Handed Releases Debut Single ‘Love Me Like The Weekend’

Jordan McGraw and his band Hundred Handed released their debut single today, “Love Me Like The Weekend.” The new pop rock band’s sound is the product of the fun seeking, crazy minds of its three members Jordan McGraw (vocals/guitar), Drew Langan (drums) and Matt Black (bass). The three friends set out to recapture the excitement of being in your first band with the experience they captured touring the world on the road that led them to Hundred Handed.

Says McGraw, who is Dr. Phil’s son, “We were inspired by a fresh start here with our new band, Hundred Handed. The song is about never taking yourself too seriously … Whether you’re an adult pretending to sneak out of your parents’ house to getting into trouble, or a high school kid banging their head against the desk until Saturday comes. Every day should have a little bit of Saturday in it. We are here to make the weekend permanent!”

“Love Me Like The Weekend” is now available on iTunes and all digital platforms. It’s the first single from the L.A. based band’s forthcoming debut album co-produced by Hundred Handed and Eddie Jackson; also collaborating with songwriter/producer Mike Green (Paramore, 5 Seconds of Summer) and songwriter The Golden Hippie.

Paul Haggis on Collaborating With David Simon and His Big Weekend Plans

paul higgins weekend agenda

Ten years ago, the Canadian director, screenwriter, and famous Scientology dropout Paul Haggis released Crash, a movie that looked at the various ways that prejudice affected the lives of Los Angelenos of different racial and class backgrounds. The movie, which starred a litany of Hollywood A-listers like Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, and Sandra Bullock, went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture (though Haggis recently suggested that maybe it didn’t deserve the honor). “It was a fable, a social experiment,” Haggis tells Vogue.com by phone. “It was me just being perverse, to see how much I could manipulate you into rethinking things you didn’t know you believed.”

His latest project, by contrast, is based on real-life events, though ones that betray similarly latent racism in a seemingly liberal community. That project is the new David Simon–penned HBO miniseries, Show Me a Hero, which Haggis signed on to direct without even laying eyes on the script. (The first two episodes premiered last Sunday; this Sunday we’ll get two more, and the last two will air August 30.)

The miniseries, based on a book by Lisa Belkin, takes on events that transpired in the late eighties in Yonkers, New York, when a federal judge ordered the working-class Westchester suburb to build 200 units of public housing on the predominantly white east side of the Saw Mill River Parkway. Spoiler alert: White Yonkers residents, who couched their xenophobia in concerns about housing values, weren’t so thrilled about the idea, and they exerted enormous pressure on local officials to disregard the court order, to the tune of millions of dollars of fines and the eventual near-breakdown of city government. The excellent Oscar Isaac stars as Nick Wasicsko, Yonkers’s Springsteen-loving mayor, at 28 the youngest in the country, who wins office on the platform of appealing the court order. When that appeal is struck down just before he takes over, he finds himself in the unenviable position of having to turn on a dime and attempt to convince Yonkers residents to submit to integration.

Small-town bureaucracy: Sounds boring, but in the hands of Simon and Haggis, it’s pretty scintillating. “This is a slow burn,” Haggis tells me. “It’s a matter of trying to capture a moment in time and reflect on that. I’m just trying to capture these people’s lives and make you feel like you’re in the middle of those crowds, in the middle of that chaos, that uncertainty that a lot of people felt at that time. It’s a very different approach for me.”

Read on for more from our conversation with Haggis about working with David Simon, how he fell in love with Bruce Springsteen, and which rock star’s memoir he’s psyched to dig into this weekend.

There’s obviously a thematic overlap here with Crash. Does addressing this subject on the small screen feel different than addressing it on the big screen?
I don’t think it’s any different in terms of the size of the screen. It’s ten years later and we’re doing it very differently. This is a true story. But attacking race. Yeah. I could do that five or six more times. Because this is a subject that’s at the heart of many of the problems in our country, and it’s going to continue to be so for many, many years, sadly. Because we refuse to address it. We keep thinking we’ve handled it, or it should be handled. But it hasn’t been.

I read that you signed onto Show Me a Hero without reading the script. What made you so confident?
Confident. I wasn’t confident at all. I just always wanted to work with David Simon.

Was there ever a moment when you were like, “Uh, why did I do that?”
Yeah, of course. When we actually looked at how much we had to accomplish in a short period, I think we all looked at each other and said, “What the hell are we doing?”

Have you read the book the series was based on? Was the material shocking to you?
Yes, I have. I read the script first, and then I watched a documentary. And then I went back and did a lot of research, looking at photos. At the end of the series we actually put the photos of the real people beside our actors. Some of them were really shocking, the vitriol that came out. The anger and self righteousness was startling. We were talking about putting 200 units [of housing] in a city of 200,000 people. It was a very small thing they were trying to accomplish in this act of desegregation. But politicians used fear to manipulate people: We like being governed by fear in America. It’s simple. We have no use for common sense in politics in America. It’s just not something that we value. Yes, that was shocking. The fact that it exploded and it was right here in New York, and just a few years ago.

Where were you living in the mid-eighties? What was your community like? Was it totally segregated like Yonkers?
I was in Los Angeles. I was living in Glendale at the time. It was a working-class neighborhood. It was white and Hispanic and black. But Los Angeles itself is incredibly segregated. That’s why I wrote Crash. You can get the impression going around L.A. that it’s just this homogeneous place. It’s not. Nobody drives to South Central, at least we didn’t in those days, to see what’s going on down there. It’s just a few miles away. Los Angeles was no better off. It was no more liberal—it just appeared to be.

You live in New York City now. Before you moved here, did you have an impression of Yonkers?
None. It was a punch line. That’s all it was. It was a silly name. Yonkers. I knew nothing about it until I came to New York. In fact, until I did this project, I’d never been there. I live in downtown New York. It’s thirty minutes from where I live. And yet I didn’t have any idea what happened there. I knew what happened in the Bronx; I knew what happened in various parts of Brooklyn, the racial strife in the seventies and eighties through to the nineties. In the eighties you’d be in Midtown Manhattan and if you walked across town and you made it from one avenue to another, you celebrated: “Hey, I made it without being mugged!”

What was it like filming in Yonkers? Did you feel any echoes of the events you were depicting?
It’s hard. You feel it under the surface, I think. There was some resentment, some trepidation as to what we were going to do. Were we going to make them look like fools? I think after the mayor embraced us, knew we were coming and opened up City Hall to us—that helped a lot. We’re very good at putting things in the past very quickly, especially things that embarrass us. I think that was the case in Yonkers. They were able to say, “Oh, yes, that happened back then.” But you see, these same things are happening in Westchester right now, in Tarrytown. Defying a federal court order to desegregate—it’s the exact same thing, and they’re using the exact same rhetoric. That it’s not about race, that it’s a green issue, that it’s about the value of people’s homes. With not an iota of irony.

Where did the idea to use a vintage Springsteen soundtrack come from?
We were asking ourselves what kind of music Nick would have listened to. We knew he loved hard rock. We knew he loved AC/DC, that he had AC/DC T-shirts. We said, I think Springsteen would speak to him. We started with the end montage, how to end this piece without a big score. We found this one Springsteen song called “Lift Me Up.” It was just perfect and wasn’t that well known. I showed it to David, and he said, “God, it’s great.” After that we started thinking, What if that’s Nick’s musical identity? When he gets in the car, what if he turns that on? Maybe he’s at home, he puts a record on, it’s Springsteen? From there it evolved. David went to meet with Springsteen’s manager. So it was a long process.

Are you a Springsteen fan?
I am. I’ve always been. He played an unplugged concert in Los Angeles for this radical group I was involved with in the eighties. It was called the Christic Institute, which then completely fell apart after that. It was a bunch of defrocked priests suing the U.S. government over their involvement in El Salvador. I’ve always been sort of that guy out there—everyone else sort of looks at and distances themselves from very quickly.

Major gear switch: What’s the one thing you want to do culturally this weekend?
I’m getting on a plane for New Zealand in a couple of hours. I’ll be in Auckland and Queenstown for the next month. So my cultural experience is going to be limited to the tops of mountains. I’m going to be hanging out with dog sleds and having small planes crash into glaciers. That will be the extent of it. I’m taking some books with me that I’m excited to read. So it’ll be reading, unless you know people in Auckland who are going to take me to some museum.

Which books are you bringing?
I’m bringing a copy of Moby’s autobiography, which he’s asked me to read before it’s published. That’s really exciting. It’s called Porcelain. And I’ve just picked up an old book called Masochism in Sex and Society, by Dr. Theodor Reik.

Did someone recommend that to you?
Yes, a friend did. I’m reading it for something I’m going to write. That’s what usually happens.

Is Moby a friend of yours? Is that why he’s asked you to read his manuscript?
Yeah. He was one of the reasons I looked forward to moving to New York when I did, quite a few years ago now. And as soon as I moved here, the bugger moved to Los Angeles. He’s a lovely man. A great friend.

Are you going to give him notes?
No! I’m just going to read it and tell him it’s brilliant, because so far it is.

Here’s How April Bloomfield Does Healthy Gazpacho: 3 Exclusive Recipes for the Weekend

gazpacho recipes

In these sweltering days, it’s perfectly normal to experience cravings of ice cream and ice water exclusively—anything warmer may seem to border on masochistic. Alas, swimming, surfing, and even lounging on the beach require a healthy source of sustenance. Which brings us to gazpacho: The chilled soup—which delivers a burst of flavor in the form of a fruit- or vegetable-based broth—is the quintessential summer meal.

Yet as any aspiring foodie can tell you, a pitch-perfect execution is necessary in the kitchen, with lesser attempts resulting in something that more closely resembles, well, salsa.  With this in mind, we reached out to April Bloomfield. The exacting chef—whose culinary triumphs include her simple, meat-laden menus for The Spotted Pig and The Breslin—recently released a veggie-centric cookbook, A Girl and Her Greens. She took on the fresh produce-driven challenge, creating three exclusive gazpacho recipes for Vogue.com that range from a cucumber and tomatillo blend thickened with protein-rich (and low fat) Lebanese yogurt, to an anti-inflammatory take on watermelon (spiked with refreshing mint) that will help you chill out and fill up.

Traditional Gazpacho

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients
2 lbs. heirloom tomatoes, eyes and whites removed
1 medium cucumber, peeled
1 shallot
1/2 jalapeño pepper
1 red bell pepper, seeds and whites removed, skin peeled
2 T Jacobsen sea salt
1 clove garlic, thinly sliced
1/8 cup picked mint leaves
1/8 cup picked opal or green basil, torn
1/4 cup sherry vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup breadcrumbs

Dice the tomatoes, cucumber, shallot, jalapeño, and red pepper separately into medium-size pieces, about three-quarters to one-inch thick. Combine the chopped vegetables in a bowl and add the salt, garlic, mint, basil, sherry vinegar, and olive oil, and toss until the vegetables are well-coated.  Cover the mixture with a lid and pop in the refrigerator until chilled—about an hour or so.

Using a slotted spoon, place the tomato mixture in a blender (leaving the excess liquid in the bowl) and purée until smooth and a rich orangey-red color. Add the breadcrumbs and remaining liquid from the bowl and purée until it is completely smooth and almost creamy. Sprinkle in a bit more salt if need be, and serve cold in a chilled glass. Garnish with a handful of fresh chopped basil and mint.

Watermelon Gazpacho

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients
2 lbs. watermelon, seeds removed and diced into 1-inch cubes
8 oz. diced tomato, seeds and whites removed
8 oz. cucumber, peeled and diced into medium-sized cubes
1 red bell pepper, stem and seeds removed, diced into 1/2 inch size pieces
1 ají dulce pepper, stem and seeds removed
1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
juice of one lemon
1/2 cup olive oil
3 T Jacobsen sea salt

Garnish
Thinly sliced red onion
Gaeta olives
Feta cheese
Cilantro
Black mint

Combine the watermelon, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, ají dulce pepper, onion, and garlic in a large bowl and add the lemon juice, olive oil, and salt. Gently toss until the vegetables are well-coated in the oil and lemon juice. Cover the mixture with a lid and pop in the refrigerator until chilled—about an hour.

Gently spoon the watermelon-tomato mixture in a blender, leaving the excess liquid in the bowl. Purée until smooth and almost creamy in texture. Sprinkle in a bit more salt, if need be, and serve cold in a chilled glass. I like to garnish this soup with a few delicate slivers of red onion, an olive or two, and feta crumbles for added tanginess. A few sprigs of fresh of cilantro and black mint top it all off beautifully and add extra aromatics.

Cucumber and Tomatillo Soup

Yields: 8 servings

Ingredients
12 cucumbers (or less depending if they are large)—a lovely market mix cut into small/medium pieces, skin left on if not tough
3 garlic cloves, peeled and split in half
3/4 whole jalapeno, thinly sliced
3/4 stale baguette
3/4 cup high-quality red wine vinegar
1 heaping cup of Marcona almonds
7 1/2 cups small tomatillos
2 1/2 cups grassy extra-virgin olive oil
3 cups labneh
1 1/2 green apples, cored and cut into medium chunks
1 1/2 bunches of basil (leaves only)
3/4 bunch chives, roughly chopped

To preserve the lovely pale green color of the soup, the key is to make sure everything is nicely chilled before you start blending (including the pitcher for the blender). It’s best to have all the ingredients premixed in one bowl before blending.

Wash and cut all of the vegetables into small to medium pieces. Trim off and discard the crusts from your stale baguette. Tear the remaining baguette into small bits. Add the red wine vinegar to a bowl with the bread. Run a sharp knife through the herbs once or twice. Add all of the remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix. You will make this recipe in three batches in the blender, filling the blender by no more than half each time; otherwise it won’t blend properly and you will overwork the machine. Puree until smooth and creamy with a beautiful pale-green color, then pass through a fine-mesh strainer.

To Garnish
The beauty of this soup is that it makes a great base for so many finishing ingredients. Raw diced scallops marinated in chili and citrus or lightly poached shrimp would be appropriate, as would topping it with cucumbers, chives, basil, mint, and melon. I like to also add a little more labneh and olive oil for a bit of indulgence.

4 Ways to Tie Your Hair Up for the Weekend: Behati Prinsloo, Alexa Chung, and More

Amanda Norgaard instagram

Brimming with sunny charm, headscarves are a little bit like straw hats: effortless in theory, but tricky to pull off in real life. But judging by our favorite vacationing Insta beauties, the secret to working an irreverent bow or colorful swath of fabric into your hair comes down to one easy rule: Keep it simple. Behati Prinsloo stayed cool and protected her highlights with a gauzy solid number, and over in Uruguay, model Amanda Norgaard reminded us why Montevideo is known as the St.-Tropez of South America with a wide headband slipped over her salty knot and an Aperol in hand. Meanwhile, a poolside Rihanna found a heat wave–ready accessory in a printed silk scarf that was knotted at the front with her spiraling bangs spilling out, and Alexa Chung dressed up a split-second updo with a cheerful bow. Just in time the weekend, here are four selfie-tested hair upgrades made for a sun-soaked retreat.

Lake Bell on Wet Hot American Summer and Her Big Weekend Plans

lake bell

Welcome to our Weekend Agenda series, in which every Friday we ask the people we most adore to share their weekend plans, and the one cultural thing that’s top on their list for the next 48 hours. Next up: Lake Bell, currently cracking us up on Netflix’s new eight-episode series, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.

When the credits opened on the beloved 2001 movie, Wet Hot American Summer, we found ourselves at Maine’s Camp Firewood at 5:57 a.m. on the last day of the season. Early morning make outs were in high gear. Camp director Beth (Janeane Garofalo) was enjoying a coffee-sipping flirtation with David Hyde Pierce’s astrophysicist Henry. Resident hottie Katie (Marguerite Moreau) was tongue wrestling with bad boy counselor Andy (Paul Rudd), while sweet and nerdy Gerald “Coop” Cooperberg (the movie and show’s cocreator Michael Showalter), looked on, burning with jealousy.

The new Netflix series, also cocreated by Showalter and David Wain, reunites the original cast with a few Camp Firewood newbies, and dares to ask: How did we get here? We’ve flashed back eight weeks to 7:45 a.m. on the first day of the summer. Katie is dating Blake (Josh Charles), a counselor at the neighboring waspy Camp Tigerclaw who enjoys spying on his girlfriend, tearing up money, and sporting a triple-popped collar. Beth is dealing with a camp-threatening toxic sludge problem. And Coop isn’t even really sweating Katie; he’s way too into his “girlfriend” Donna (Wet Hot newcomer Lake Bell), who forces Coop to wear a puka shell necklace while also sending him some seriously mixed relationship signals.

“My character is a super awkward, insecure sixteen-year-old Jewish girl who just got back from Israel,” Bell explains by phone while her nine-month-old daughter Nova coos in the background. “She’s feeling pretty important about all the decisions she’s making in her life, which includes wearing really bad overalls and trying to use Israeli terms for mundane things.” (For the record, the overalls are pretty cool.)

Read on for more from our conversation with Bell about becoming part of Wet Hot, what it’s like to bring your baby to Camp Firewood, and that other thing she’s psyched to stream on Netflix this weekend.

So how’d you get involved with round two of Wet Hot American Summer?
David Wain is a really good friend of mine. We often do work slightly incestuously: Me and my friends who work on one thing, we try to lasso in other friends for other projects. I was part of a lasso from Childrens Hospital into Wet Hot. I was super jazzed to be a part of it because I was a fan of the original movie.

Do you remember watching the original?
I don’t have a visceral kind of, “I was right there” [memory]. Wet Hot American Summer was sort of lowbrow genius, you know? But smart in its cultish silliness. It wasn’t considered something of great cultural caliber. But like many cult pieces, it sort of became something culturally relevant, which I think is what’s so wonderful about it. At a time when every series we’re supposed to be DVR-ing is very important, very serious, has to do with heavy, heavy matters, I think Wet Hot provides a respite to that DVR homework. It’s totally the gummy bears of your programming.

That’s true, although I know some people who take it very seriously, who are really obsessed.
Yeah, but that’s what’s so genius about it. When you say obsessed, I think it’s because it’s such a tremendous vacation from everything that’s so serious. You can have fun watching it. There’s no pressure. Sure the cast is insane. Everybody’s come back for it and everybody’s gone on to do some pretty impressive stuff. It’s a little more important now than it was then in terms of this relevance. But I love things that sort blossom into being relevant years later. I’m a fan of the late bloomer, as a rule.

So Donna wears a pretty funky pair of overalls. I was into them!
I lean into all things that are a little off. I will always wear overalls. At this point I find a way in most of my life to wear a jumpsuit or an overall, anything that’s sort of like a an all-in-one situation. I do that on the red carpet a lot. I like to be done in one fell swoop. This is my second overall comedy moment, from In a World . . . to Wet Hot. So I’m lobbying hard for women to start wearing them in a pretty major way.

Whose idea were they?
They were in my fitting. I’ve actually I worked with this costume designer on Childrens Hospital and she knows I’m a big overall person. I was four months postnatal when we shot it. We were trying to cover my baby belly cause, obviously, four months after [giving birth] you’re basically still pregnant, I was looking for something that made sense, but that also covered that midsection as much as possible.

You did, though, opt for a crop top underneath.
That’s the key. That was the optical illusion. I’m like, crop top, but cover the midsection, so as to distract you. Oh, everything must be OK down there. She’s wearing a crop top, so obviously . . .

Did the filming make you feel like you were back at camp?
My particular situation was a little less like camp because I had the old infant-in-the-trailer kind of thing. I don’t remember having that in camp. But I think the camaraderie and the goofiness and the playful politics of a set is sort of camp-like

I went to all-girls camps so there wasn’t anything naughty going on. And I was also very young. I think I was eight years old. I didn’t have the raucous time that the counselors [are having in Wet Hot.] They’re like sixteen to eighteen, but of course they’re 35–45-year-olds playing that. Thirty-five playing sixteen is totally normal.

So, besides watching Wet Hot American Summer all weekend, what’s the one piece of culture you’ll feel good about consuming?
My daughter Nova and I are driving up to my mom’s house in Connecticut. Maybe you guys aren’t getting points for that, but I’m going to see my mom so I am. And we’re going to watch the Tig Notaro documentary [Tig on Netflix]. She’s one of our friends and I adore her and was there with her through her difficult times. I’m so happy that this documentary is getting such great reception. I think that those two pieces of cultural nourishment will complement each other.

What else will you guys do in the country?
In Connecticut, we have a good old-fashioned baby playdate. My mom has bought a sandbox that she would like us to come up and try. My daughter is nine months old so this is kind of a big deal. We’re going to be doing a lot of sand work. There is a wading pool that will happen. We do some hiking and walking. There’s about five dogs up at my mom’s house so we’re going to bring our dog into the mix and make it six. She also has birds we’re going to see. She has quail that she rescued from people who hunt quail. It’s like a lot of animals, sand, water. All the elements, basically.

Sounds really elemental.
Yeah, it’s really cool. And you know when you go to a country house, there’s always cooking. It’s always like, what are we cooking next? You finish lunch. You’re like, all right! Let’s cook dinner!
