Best Men’s Sweatpants for Working Out, Relaxing, and More

Sweatpants have been enjoying some well deserved time in the spotlight in recent years. Although they started out as basic workout apparel, clothing retailers and designers have expanded the category significantly, and now guys have lots of options to choose from. The best men’s sweatpants can work in all kinds of situations, whether you’re gearing up for an abs workout or just looking for something comfortable to get you through the day.

The Top 10 Sweat Shorts for Men

How to Pick the Best Sweatpants

First, consider how you’ll be wearing your pants. For workouts and running, opt for stretchy, lightweight synthetic fabrics, which will keep you cool and won’t restrict your movements. If comfort and aesthetics are your main priorities, look for cotton or cotton blends, which will be soft against your skin and have a more laid-back look than technical fabrics.

In this guide, you’ll find some of the best Nike Dri-Fit sweatpants, the best Adidas sweatpants, and top pairs from other brands as well.

No matter how you like to style your sweats, these are the best men’s sweatpants, track pants, and more to know about right now.

Best Workout Pants: Nike Pro Men’s Pants

These sweats from Nike are made with the company’s moisture-wicking Dri-FIT technology to keep you cool through tough workouts, and the lightweight fabric is designed to stretch for maximum freedom of movement. The tailored fit keeps them from looking baggy, but zippered ankles make them easy to slip on and off over shoes.

[$ 70;]

Best for Wet Weather: Adidas City Base Woven Pants

Don’t let a little rain get you soaked and derail your workout. These pants from Adidas will keep you comfortable: They feature a DWR coating to repel water, and their trim fit and stretchy polyester-elastane fabric will let you power through all kinds of exercises. Plus, zippered side pockets keep your valuables secure while you break a sweat.

[$ 60;]

Best for Comfort: Entireworld Loop Back Sweatpant

When your plan for the day includes spending an afternoon on the couch, these are the pants you want to throw on first. Made from extra soft organic Japanese cotton, these sweats deliver supreme comfort and a roomy fit. Added bonus: The fabric is blended with recycled polyester to reduce shrinking, so you can keep wearing them for years to come.

[$ 88;]

Best for Camping: Patagonia Men’s Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pants

Now’s a good time to invest in some fleece sweatpants—when you’re shivering at your mountain campsite later this summer, you’ll wish you had a pair like these. The Patagonia Synchilla pants are made from warm, comfy recycled polyester fleece and feature an integrated belt buckle for a snug fit. They’re perfect for throwing on during chilly nights by the campfire.

[$ 99;]

Best for Yoga: Nike Dri-FIT Men’s Yoga Pants

These pants combine the comfort of sweats with yoga-specific tailoring. The stretchy jersey fabric feels soft and compliant against the skin, and a tapered fit below the knee paired with a roomier fit in the thigh means these pants won’t constrict your movements or get in your way on the mat.

[$ 65;]

Best for Casual Wear: Wellen Easy Chino

Need a pair of sweats that you can wear outside without feeling too casual? Grab the Easy Chino, which merges the refined look of chinos—a rear welt pocket, trim fit, cuffable cotton-linen fabric—with a relaxed elastic drawstring waist. You’ll get the comfy fit and feel of your favorite loungewear in a stylish pant that works well with a variety of outfits.

[$ 88;]

Best for a Slim Fit: Softwear Men’s Jogger

Like any lounge-worthy pair of sweats, these joggers from Softwear are soft and comfortable, but their sleek silhouette sets them apart from your typical lumpy cotton pants. The form-fitting tailoring and simple waistband create a trim look, and the fabric is sustainably sourced, too.

[$ 78;]

Best Track Pants: Tracksmith Session Pant

Running demands a very specific kind of pants—they need to be lightweight, breathable, and not mess up your form. This pair from running outfitter Tracksmith is up to the task. Mesh panels at the calves ensure a breezy feel, and the nylon-elastane fabric delivers plenty of give without weighing you down. And with its two zippered side pockets, you can pick up the pace without losing your keys and phone.

Andre 3000 Not Working On New Album, Says Big Boi & Sleep Brown

Big Boi & Sleepy Brown

Source: Pharoh Martin / Radio One Digital

Yesterday (Sept. 18), as goes every six months or so, word was that Andre 3000 had enough music for a new album, with Dr. Dre no less. However, in a recent interview, 3 Stacks’ OutKast partner Big Boi put the kibosh on that noise.

“Lies,” told the homies at Majic ATL’s Ryan Cameron Uncensored Speak after being read a report from the Root detailing the circumstances. “He probably was playing some music, but he’s not working on a record. He’s been recording songs for years.

Sleepy Brown, who is dropping a joint project with Big Boi called Big Sleepover (due out early 2020), then explained that Andre 3000 was playing tracks for Anderson .Paak to see if he wanted to work on any of them. Rapper Thurz (Sleepy and Big said they thought it was Murs, but it was definitely Thurz) must have overheard the songs and then figured a new album was on deck.

But, nah. And they’re certain of it because apparently there is a Dungeon Family group chat and Andre 3000 himself said that if he did have an album on the way, they would be the first to know.

When can we hear all these songs Stacks been stacking, though? Just saying.

Peep the interview below.

Dijon described Comme des Garçons as “one of the most forward-thinking [brands] in the world” and with its help, she has created a series of premium T-shirts and accessories; the latter includes the kinds of leatherwear any music lover would covet, including three wallets, headphone and USB stick carriers, as well as record bags. Dijon described the small range as “utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing” and it will be available first at the Comme des Garçons-owned Dover Street Market stores. 6 Things Working Women Should Never Write in Email

working women

By now, you’ve likely heard about the essay Jennifer Lawrence wrote for the Lenny newsletter discussing the gender pay gap earlier this week. If not, here’s a quick synopsis: JLaw explained that after the Sony hack—which leaked emails showing she took home a lot less money than her American Hustle male costars Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper—she was mad. Not at Sony necessarily, but at herself. “I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early,” Lawrence wrote. She goes on to add that she didn’t barter aggressively because she didn’t want to be perceived as abrasive, but concludes by writing: “I’m over trying to find the ‘adorable’ way to state my opinion and still be likable!” Amen, sister.

On the heels of this, Alexandra Petri at The Washington Post geniusly took things one step further—identifying a language called “Woman in a Meeting,” and then translating famous sentences in history into how a woman in a meeting would have said them (An example: “Give me liberty, or give me death.” Woman in a Meeting: “Dave, if I could, I could just—I just really feel like if we had liberty it would be terrific, and the alternative would just be awful, you know? That’s just how it strikes me. I don’t know.”)

As a women’s studies minor and English literature major who’s now a working mom, and who’s read Tina Fey’s Bossy Pants, Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In, and Anne Marie Slaughter’s “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” this kind of speak is something I think about a lot. I’ve definitely recast an email a time or two because I’m cognizant of the Woman in a Meeting linguistic crutches and I don’t want to succumb to them. Sometimes I succeed—and sometimes I fail, giving in to the societal pull to sound less direct than I’d like out of a fear of seeming pushy, bossy, or, worst of all, shrill. I can guarantee these are things most men don’t spend time pondering. Don’t misread me, I’m not saying their way is always the right way. What I am saying is I’ve compiled a list of five words and phrases I’m actively trying to ban from sent folder. Working women: Please take note.

1. “I’m sorry . . .”
I’m not sorry anymore! We have to stop apologizing for asking people to do things, particularly when it’s something that’s part of their job.

2. “Just . . .”
We need to stop using this word as a way to weaken a request or our opinion.

3. “This might be a stupid question but . . .”
Like they said in school, there are no stupid questions. Well, sometimes there are—but ask, don’t caveat.

4. “I may be wrong but . . .”
Don’t lessen the impact of what you say before you say it.

5. “If you want my two cents . . . ”
A man usually gives his three cents and he certainly doesn’t offset it with this phrase.

6. “Does this make sense?”
I do this one a lot, and I can’t stand it. Trust that what you wrote makes sense. Don’t openly question in email whether or not your thinking is sensical.

How Employees Everywhere End Up Working For Free

Are we really so shocked that Urban Outfitters asked its salaried office workers to “volunteer” their time on a weekend unpacking boxes in a company warehouse?

The hipster retailer’s parent company URBN — which also owns Anthropologie and Free People — came up for a cycle of Internet thrash-and-shame this week, after Gawker published an internal company email with the subject line “A Call for URBN Volunteers.” Salaried employees were urged to “work side by side” with paid workers in a Pennsylvania fulfillment center to pack and ship orders. “Get your co-workers together for a team building activity!” the email said. There would be free lunch.

The company defended the practice, saying workers were enthusiastic about the opportunity. “The dedication and commitment of URBN employees are second to none,” URBN said in an emailed statement to The Huffington Post.

It’s pretty hard to find any salaried worker in 2015 who isn’t “volunteering” free time to the boss in some way — whether they’re checking and responding to email at the playground while watching the kids, logging on at home on Sunday to “get ready” for the workweek, logging on after the kids go to bed to “finish up” for the day or attending awkward networking events at bars and restaurants for “fun” and “team building.” Managers pinch-hit extra hours for cashiers and waiters who call in sick. Work has crept into every corner of our lives — who hasn’t checked their work email from the comfort of their bed?

Urban Outfitters just seems to have taken this phenomenon to its sadly logical extreme.

Now, you’ll want to say: Well, these are salaried workers. Managers! These people are supposed to put in extra hours, in exchange for higher status and the flexibility and freedom that come with it. Not to mention those big fat paychecks they collect.

And OK, yes: Consultants, investment bankers and the like put in 80-hour weeks and are arguably well-compensated for their time. Whether that’s worth all the stress and the loss of time with family is another question — as is whether a person can really be said to be “free” if they’re working 80 hours a week.

The thing is, there are a lot of workers who earn “salaries” of as little as $ 24,000 a year. These employees are essentially volunteering their time — beyond the standard 40 hours — for no extra compensation.

Urban Outfitters managers pull in an average of $ 38,000 a year, according to data from the salary website Glassdoor.

Many, many employers are doing this thing where they’ll hire people for salaried jobs with fancy titles so they can milk those employees without having to pay overtime. Workers may feel like they’re advancing professionally, but on a day-to-day level, they’re struggling to get by.

Under federal law, workers who don’t get paid overtime — so-called “exempt employees” — are supposed to be executives, managers and well-compensated white-collar workers. But the definition has grown pretty broad over the decades since the law was originally drawn up.

In 1975, 62 percent of salaried, full-time workers qualified for overtime pay, including a majority of college graduates. Today, only 8 percent of workers qualify for overtime. The rest, presumably, are “volunteering” whenever their workweek spills over into their free hours.

Retail managers are particularly vulnerable to this. When companies want to avoid paying overtime to hourly workers, these managers end up doing the same kind of shift work — but for no extra pay. Last month, a CVS night manager making $ 34,000 a year told The American Prospect about working extremely long hours, pitching in for hourly employees who had to be sent home because the company didn’t want to pay overtime.

The definition of “manager” has grown so absurdly overinflated that the Obama administration and the U.S. Department of Labor are currently revising the rules about who gets to wear the label.

Currently, your employer doesn’t need to pay you for overtime hours if you make more than $ 23,660 a year — in other words, just above the poverty line. Under the proposed new rules, which may take effect next year, the threshold would be raised to $ 50,400 — the U.S. median income. If you make less than that, you would be eligible for overtime pay. As many as 5 million workers could be affected.

In opposing the new rules, the Society for Human Resource Management is trying to argue that salaried workers lose out on prestige and flexibility when they go back on the clock.

“For a lot of people, the difference between hourly or salaried is the difference between a job and a career,” Nancy Hammer, senior government affairs policy counsel at the HR lobby group, told The Wall Street Journal recently.

That’s one way to look at it. Here’s another: In real life, for a lot of people, the difference between “hourly” and “salaried” is the difference between working for pay and working for free. Hourly workers get paid for their time, while salaried workers get to “volunteer” their lives to the company — often in exchange for a “career” that pays very little.

One paralegal who spoke to the Journal admitted that it did feel like a demotion when, a decade ago, he had to start clocking in at work. But, he told reporters Rachel Emma Silverman and Rachel Feintzeig, “it’s nice to know that if you have to stay late, you’re being paid for those hours that you’re working.”

Bushwick Bill Of The Geto Boys Working On Documentary

Bushwick Bill of The Geto Boys is in the process of creating a documentary about his life and he is asking for help from the Hip-Hop community.

“Bushwick Bill: A Geto Boy – A Documentary Film” will be “Chronicling the life of the gangsta rapper who happens to be a charming, hysterical one-eyed dwarf,” according to a statement. Bushwick was on of the various incarnations of the Geto Boys, but certainly one of the most visible.

Now, the OG rapper has set up a crowd funding site to help raise dollars to create the movie.

The film maker further made their case:

“For the past 3 years, we have been filming and documenting the life of the infamous Richard Shaw, AKA Bushwick Bill, original member of the Geto Boys and all around fascinating presence and one of the most unique entertainers ever.  Our desire to do a documentary on Bill has been one that stretches over a decade long.  It finally became a reality a few years ago when we were able to track Bill down in Austin, Texas.  A bit of a rolling stone, Bill may jump from town to town, but one thing is certain, no matter where he lands, people always recognize him. He is undoubtedly a hardcore rap legend. He has the stories to back it up.  He has rapped lyrics that command it.   And he literally has the scars to prove it.”

At present day, the film has raised $ 13,122 of the $ 50k goal with fans continuing to add on.

Check out a preview of the film below.

“I’m currently directing a doc about O.J. Simpson. That’s the main thing I’m in the middle of right now,” Jenkins reveals to “Hopefully, Fresh Dressed will continue to create opportunities, not just for me, but other people like us.”

Simpson was a running back at the University of Southern California and in the NFL. The Heisman Trophy winner was later accused of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in 1994. He was acquitted of both counts of murder a year later.

Jenkins has been working as a journalist for over two decades. He has contributed to Vibe, ego trip, Rolling Stone, and other publications. Jenkins currently serves as the creator director of Mass Appeal.

Fresh Dressed was Jenkins directorial debut. The documentary was produced in conjunction with CNN Films and Mass Appeal. Celebrated Hip Hop artist Nas serves as a producer as well.

“I interviewed him for the cover of the first issue of Ego Trip which was a magazine me and Elliott Wilson used to publish. So I’ve been interacting with Nas since at least 1994. Later in life, he became a partner in Mass Appeal where I’m a partner too,” says Jenkins. “As a producer, obviously his credibility goes a long way. His insights on and off screen and his relationships were extremely useful.”

5 Things My Husband Teaches Our Daughter About Working Parents

Dear Jason,

You’ve worked full-time since our daughter Lily was born 10 years ago; I had that first summer off to be with her, and then I too went back to work, in a complicated algorithm of multiple part-time gigs. As is true for most families with two working parents, this was dictated by the economy, not whim or simple choice. Day jobs notwithstanding, we both dove into hands-on parenting from the start.

But as I met other people with infants, I discovered that this was not universal, especially for single-worker families; often, whoever was employed (typically a dad) felt entitled to leave all concrete parenthood to the at-home partner (most often a mom). I’ve also watched this dynamic solidify as kids got older, even after the at-home parent returned to work. (And this is in a state considered the bluest of the blue!)

For all our flaws and failings (which Lily will surely recount in therapy someday), I’m glad that kind of imbalance is not our way of life, and that you don’t see parenthood in those terms. Instead, you’re modeling how to share the burdens and privileges of raising a child, teaching lessons I hope she’ll recall in the future if she chooses to be a mom.

1. Parenting is work.
Any task you do for hours and hours, week after week, knowing that there are both high expectations and serious consequences for failure, qualifies as work (no matter how much you love it). In the first months, when I was home alone with the baby, and then during the year I only worked a few days a week, you never treated the time I spent with her as a “day off” for me. True leisure, the power of choice when it comes to one’s use of time, is in short supply for stay-at-home parents, and you respected that. You made sure I got time out of the apartment, swapped out with me when possible, and never whined, “I had to work all day while you stayed at home.”

2. Workers still parent.
I’ve observed a fair number of dads who think their real work is done when they leave the office, and that simple presence at home is good enough; some feel as if fielding requests for other contributions to family life implies that their daytime efforts are not appreciated. But even when you had that one miserable job with the co-worker from hell, you never questioned the need to go straight from work to pick Lily up from her after-school program, or to take your turn at doing the bedtime ritual. If Lily was sick, you were quick to offer up your own personal days to stay with her. Why? Because that’s your job, too.

3. Chores don’t know gender.
Coming home from paid work to face domestic chores is never a thrill. Cooking, laundry, housecleaning, helping with homework, packing lunches — there’s no holiday bonus for any of it. A fair number of my friends who are working moms have complained that the bulk of these tasks still fall to them, though their husbands could help if they chose to. We each have our default chores, but Lily isn’t witnessing a division of duty by gender: in you, she sees a parent who can find time after work to wash her favorite dress for the school concert and repair her bicycle. As is demonstrated by many same-sex couples, and as stay-at-home dads prove every day, a Y chromosome doesn’t render you physically incapable of cooking a meal or sweeping a floor.

4. “It’s not my job” doesn’t fly.
Because we both work, all of these in-house chores must be accomplished in the few hours between arriving home and falling into bed. Sometimes, it’s just not possible for one dad to do all his tasks; instead of keeping a rigid mental tally of who-did-what, we pitch in. When the laundry (“your” task) started feeling endless a couple of years ago, you asked me to help fold it more often, so I did. When my work hours changed and kept me away from home longer, you picked up some of the dog-walking (“my” task). From dishes to dry cleaning, Lily sees a constant hand-off system — which means that when she tries to duck out of a task that isn’t “hers,” she knows what we’ll say: “We’re a family. We all do our part.”

5. Vacation time is required.
Few people love any job so much that they never need a day off. The reality of being a parent is that, unlike with other types of work, you can’t predictably clock in and clock out. (And forget about setting your own hours.) But the healthiest, happiest parents are ones who do get breaks — and whose partners consider this essential. You safeguard my writing time and send me off to the movies when I’m stressed. And I return the favor, making sure you hop on your bicycle and ride off into some free time. I know that having a few hours to yourself is restorative and makes it possible for you to keep doing all the kinds of work you do so well.

To Lily, none of this is unusual; it’s just how parents are. I’m grateful that she has you for a dad.

Happy Father’s Day,

50 Cent on Working Out, Being Well, and Eating Cheese

50 Cent and his A+ abs. (Photo: Frigo / Splash News)

By 50 Cent as Told to Ashley Weatherford

A decade after his debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, 50 Cent is a very different man. He’s eschewed his trademark bulletproof vest for tailored suits (or no shirt at all, if you consider his most recent campaign for underwear brand Frigo), acts now more than he raps (he’ll join Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw this summer and has a leading role in Starz’s crime drama Power), and launched health brand SK Energy shots. The Cut spoke with 50 Cent about his surprising admiration of Floyd Mayweather, how he staves off boredom at the gym, and why he always surrounds himself with cheese.

How I start my day: It fluctuates, but this morning I got up at 7 a.m. to be at the gym by 7:30 a.m. I usually wake up at 9 a.m. to be at the gym by 10 a.m. I’ll have liquid protein before the gym. I’m not really a breakfast person. Like this morning, I was like: I’m not hungry yet. I was still wiping my eyes at the gym. When I do have breakfast, it’s at 11 a.m. I’ll train and go to the office by 11:15 a.m. If it’s a press day, a stylist meets me there to figure out what I have to wear, and after I get dressed, I make my way over to start publicity and professional stuff.

How I like to sweat: I have a trainer because it’s easier for me to take my mind off of how much I’m doing. If you concentrate too hard and you’re writing down how many sets you did, then you’ll only do a few and feel like you did enough. Without the trainer, I’d be walking around, looking at people, and listening to music. I could sit there for two hours and do half the work. When I go to the gym casually without him, it doesn’t feel like a workout. I’m not really into lifting heavy weights, but using smaller weights as cardio. It keeps your heart rate higher and I keep track of my heart rate on my tablet to make sure it stays high. I only take 30 seconds of recovery.

To me, wellness is: Just being conscious of your physical [body]. When I work out, I feel better. Everything about me — my spirits — is just in a different space. Because I do it before work hours, it gives me a chance to think about everything that’s in front of me for the day. Like me, females will go towards cardio. They’ll go for cardio work and while they’re there, it gives them a chance to think for a while.

Related: Jordana Brewster on Chocolate Pizza, ‘Uplifting Podcasts,’ and Being Well

How wellness has changed for me: Watching professional fighters and their process changed everything for me. I don’t care how out of shape they are, they can make weight. [Editor’s note: Boxers frequently gain or lose weight to fight within a particular weight class. It’s referred to as “making weight.”] They’re training to perform on the highest level. In four weeks, you can see a guy who’s 180 pounds drop to 154 pounds. Like Floyd [Mayweather], he’s naturally 147 pounds, and he’ll fight at 152 or 154. He has Fatburgers during training camp. He doesn’t even like to stretch. Before his fight with Ortiz, we were in Orlando together and I was like, “Yo, when are you going to start [training]?” This was two in the morning in the nightclub. He goes: “I’ll start tonight.” When we left the nightclub, he pulled around the corner, put his clothes on in the backseat, and ran six miles.

My biggest wellness struggle is
: Dieting. It is the toughest part and the most important part. Usually, when people try to lose weight, they start eating less and it’s the exact opposite of what they’re supposed to be doing. You’re supposed to be continuously eating. If you eat one meal a day, like a salad, your body is just holding onto the fat from the dressing because it’s in survival mode. People don’t make the adjustments well.

How I eat when I’m alone: I can have a cheese sandwich and feel like it’s a full-on meal. That’s what was in the house when I was growing up. If you ask my grandma, she’ll tell you I like cranberry juice and that cheese always has to be around.

Related: Can Lemon Water Really Help You Lose Weight?

My wellness advice is: To be conscious of what you think is the best version of yourself. To create those goals and not necessarily feel like you have to do it the first day you go to the gym. What happens is, people will go in, they’ll train hard, and it will hurt. The recovery process will make you not want to come back tomorrow. If they haven’t stopped by GNC to get something that will help them recover, or they’re not taking any amino acids or something that would help them not feel completely fatigued following their workout, then there’s going to be a point when they won’t show up to the gym anymore. Also, trying to adjust to a healthier lifestyle. Child obesity in America is an extreme issue. It’s because kids are at the computer or on Playstation instead of at the park. Creating situations where kids can be active and physical is also the responsibility of the parents. If there are things like organized sports, they can actually get in and get out and get moving.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Joel McHale Couldn’t Be More Thrilled About Working On The New ‘X-Files’ Miniseries

“The X-Files” will soon be back on the air with a new miniseries, and perhaps no one is more excited about that than Joel McHale.

The comedian is set to guest star on the show as “the anchor of a popular conservative Internet news network who becomes an unlikely ally for Fox Mulder,” and when McHale visited HuffPost Live on Wednesday, he couldn’t stop gushing about the opportunity.

“I have been such a huge fan of the show and the movies, so to be on set with them was truly surreal and thrilling and fun, and I still can’t believe my good fortune for being on the show,” McHale said. “And the script — it’s Chris Carter, so the script is dynamite, and he’s so nice on set.”

McHale had equally rapturous praise for the lead actors of the series.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson could not be nicer and more welcoming and gracious — and they don’t have to be. They could be rude to me and I’d be thrilled by it,” he said.

And before the big return of “The X-Files,” McHale fans can catch him on “The Soup” and as host of the 2015 ESPY Awards, airing July 15 on ABC.

British Rapper Skepta Talks Working With Drake & Earl Sweatshirt For His “Konnichiwa” Album

(AllHipHop News) American audiences may not be as familiar with English grime artist Joseph “Skepta” Adenuga as music fans from across the pond, but Hip Hop stars from the States are well aware of the 32-year-old North London native.

[ALSO READ: Kanye West Releases “First Official” Video For “All Day”]

Skepta a got a huge shout-out from Kanye West at the BRIT Awards in February. The GOOD Music boss debuted his single “All Day” at the ceremony, and Ye hand-picked Skepta to gather 30 people to join him during the fire cannon filled televised performance.

Besides Mr. West, Skepta has also made fans out of OVO leader Drake and Odd Future affiliate Earl Sweatshirt. A new cover story with Fader reveals Skepta set up studio time with both North American rappers.

But the question was asked if Skepta’s collaborations with Drizzy and Earl will cause him to bend to their respective musical styles. Or does the emcee/producer expect for the two performers to fall into the sound being established for his upcoming Konnichiwa album?

“I put P Diddy on a f*cking grime tune. I don’t care what they feel about it. They have to come on my wave – that’s the only thing that’s going to give my album what it needs,” said Skepta. “I understand the objective now, and I ain’t going to f*cking America to shoot a video. They need to come to the roads with me.”

Skepta is serious about creating a project that reflects his experiences, his lifestyle, and his city. The Nigerian descendant recognized the contrasts between the atmosphere of London versus the glamorous vibe of Hollywood.

“England is so black and white, so plain, like a burger with nothing on it. No salad, nothing. That’s why it’s so real,” Skepta added.

He continued, “I want anybody from around the world to be able to listen to the album and know it comes from London – from the beats, not just the vocals.”

News in Brief: Report: Underpaid Migrant Laborers Working 18 Hours Per Day On FIFA Legal Defense

ZURICH—Following a massive U.S. Department of Justice indictment alleging that high-ranking members of the global soccer organization conducted widespread financial fraud, sources confirmed Thursday that underpaid migrant laborers are currently working roughly 18 hours a day preparing FIFA’s legal defense. “We have reason to believe that dozens of malnourished, impoverished workers are being exploited by FIFA for their labor as they attempt to build a defense strategy for charges including bribery, money laundering, and racketeering,” said Human Rights Watch spokesperson Reed Brody, noting that the laborers, who originate from countries including Bangladesh, Thailand, and Senegal, have been reviewing financial records and filing subpoenas for hours on end in a fetid, dimly lit boiler room inside FIFA headquarters. “Some of those working to research relevant RICO cases are said to be as young as 14 years old, and we know of at least three cases of workers who …

According to TMZ, Diddy and Drake spoke in person on Monday. The conversation apparently involved a potential joint venture between the Bad Boy Records founder and the OVO leader. The site reports they were unable to finalize a deal, but they did discuss products such as clothing, jewelry, and cigars.

In December, rumors began circulating that Diddy punched or slapped Drake at Club LIV in Miami. At first the speculation was the incident was over Drake flirting with R&B singer Cassie, but later stories suggested the ordeal was the result of Drizzy allegedly stealing the “0 To 100″ beat from Diddy.

Rap-A-Lot Records head James Prince even jumped into the situation by sending out a warning to Diddy to back off his protégé Drake. Diddy and Drake reportedly first settled their issues over the phone in recent days.

What No One Tells You About Working in Fashion

Throughout my high school years, I was always captivated by the fashion industry. Though I lived in the South in a town of 50,000, I poured over the pages of Elle and Vogue, hoping that one day I could be as chic as Kate Moss (Don’t look at me like that — we’ve all been there.). Summer after my freshman year of college, I began an internship at a fashion magazine in New York, expecting my experience to rival that of Anne Hathaway’s in The Devil Wears Prada. Though exclusive in their own ways, as every office tends to be, the editors and staff were nothing but nice. However, I quickly realized New York was not my cup of Yerba Mate, so I headed west to Los Angeles where I would begin my descent into fashion public relations.

Internships in fashion PR are anything but glamorous. Sure, you may try to look “trendy” the first couple of weeks — perhaps even wearing heels! Ha. But once you realize that your number one job is schlepping garment bags, it’s all sneakers and Madewell tees from here on out. Who needs a Class Pass subscription when you’re regularly lugging around 40 pounds of sequins? After two rounds of internships, I was a pro at wrapping up evening gowns and organizing racks. And guess what? After three years in the biz, I still had to wrestle with the occasional garment bag. If you want to work in fashion, be not afraid of good old-fashioned manual labor.

Working in any area of fashion is not for the faint of heart. The sound bites I have heard over the years range from “Girls should start getting Botox at 19 years old,” to “You look SO good — like anorexic good,” which is basically the holy grail of compliments in the industry. Considering said industry revolves around stick-thin supermodels and unattainably perfect celebrities, body image is a prolific and ever-present issue. Being surrounded by these images 24/7 takes a toll, so it’s important, for sanity’s sake, to develop a thick skin.

Another unforeseen side effect of working in fashion is that shopping will become a chore. You are bombarded with headlines like “The Next BIG Trend in Denim” and “5 Staples Every Fashion Girl Needs” on a daily basis, so it’s no wonder that shopping becomes a more frustrating experience than an enjoyable one. While browsing Nordstrom, you go back and forth on buying an off-the-shoulder peasant top thinking, “Well, 70’s style is supposedly making a comeback, but will it last into next season? Am I buying too much into trends? Will everyone be wearing a peasant top/suede skirt combo this summer? God forbid I look ripped off the page of a Coachella style story…” Working in a showroom or studio, you will begin to notice the tug-o-war between wanting to keep up with current trends while also being too-cool-for-school anti-trend. Hence, the absurd amount of drapey tees, boyfriend jeans, and overpriced sneakers worn in showrooms and by stylists.

Finally, the thing I never anticipated when starting out in the industry was that I would be thrust into the finicky politics of the entertainment industry. Every industry has its own power struggles, but the constant back and forth between publicists, editors, studios, and designers deserves a league of its own. Attempting to keep all of these headstrong individuals happy and complacent is a daily struggle of plate-spinning proportions. Managing expectations and overseeing critical conversations are a part of the job description, so it’s key to be prepared and confident.

Despite the less-than-dignified working conditions and demanding industry politics, the perks of working in fashion make it worth it. Working with insanely cool creative people never gets old and the occasional freebies are a welcome incentive. If you’re a passionate, hardworking misfit, the fashion industry may be the perfect place for you. Just don’t be afraid of getting your Reformation top dirty.

What It Was REALLY Like Working As an Abercrombie ‘Model’

I just read in the Wall Street Journal that the Abercrombie Company said it would stop hiring sales staff on “body type or physical attractiveness” and will relax its infamous “look policy.” “Brand Representative” will replace “Model” as the title for sales staff as well. According to the article, overall, the company’s marketing — which was heavily sexualized — is going be to be toned down.

As a former “model” on the sales staff, what do I have to say about this?

It’s about damn time.

When I was in college, babysitting wasn’t cutting it during the winter months and I needed another job. I was in the mall one day when an overly-bubbly blonde girl wearing an Abercrombie and Fitch distressed denim skirt with branded flip flops and no stockings (it was December in New Jersey, mind you) approached me.

“Would you be interested in working here?” she asked me, clipboard in hand.

“I am looking for a part-time job, actually.”

“Well, we are having a group interview on Saturday at 4. You should totally come! Wear Abercrombie. It helps.” She explained.

“Um… OK. Sure.” I agreed.

Working in retail never appealed to me, but I needed the extra money.

With that, she crossed off something on her clipboard and pranced off.

I returned on Saturday to find myself sitting in the store’s lounge area with a group of people, men and women, around my age. We all looked alike. We could have been related. White. Thin. Straight teeth. No acne. The other thing that separated me from the other girls was that their hair was pin straight, and mine with thick and very curly.

The manager introduced herself to us and got right into what was expected of us going forward. There was no interview process. She didn’t know anything about me. She didn’t know that I hated retail, that I wasn’t the best “people person” and that I didn’t always dress head to toe in their brand. She didn’t know my availability, which would be limited because I was taking 21 college credits that semester, or that I would have to quit in five months when summer arrived because I babysat for a family full-time. She didn’t know if I had drug problem (I don’t). All she knew about me, and the others, was our outward appearances.

We were each handed a pamphlet, the cover adorned with a shirtless man. She went over the fact that we weren’t called “representatives” or “sales associates,” we were to be called “models.” She discussed how our hair couldn’t be heavily styled or dyed an “unnatural” color. She talked to the girls and explained we could not ever don fake nails (or painted nails in general), heavy eyeliner or colored lipstick. We couldn’t wear black… ever, because the company did not make any clothing in black. Flip-flops could be worn year-round, but she rambled off a long list of shoes we couldn’t wear when working. Uggs were permitted. I hated Uggs, so I’d be wearing flip-flops even if it was snowing outside.

We would be privy to a 30% discount. The lights were to be kept low, the music high. Every 15 minutes, someone was to go around the store and spray the clothes with a designated cologne. She then went over how every so often, we will need to “recruit” a certain type of person to work with us — just like how we were recruited. She gave us the checklist of who we would have to troll the mall for, and it was ridiculous. If smartphones existed back then, it would have been online in an instant. It was a checklist that basically was their laundry list of all things that they believed made someone “attractive.” At the bottom was a different list for “minorities,” which according to that manager, they “needed” every once in a while to avoid a lawsuit.

As we were leaving, another group of kids my age were heading into the lounge area. The manager nonchalantly mentioned that these were people who did not meet the criteria to be “allowed” on the floor to interact with customers, but they would be good working in the “back,” which I would later find out was the stock room.

I was young and I needed the money. I remember going home that day and telling my mother that I believed I was hired just based on preconceived notions of what they believed was attractive. I didn’t feel flattered. Actually, I felt even more self-conscious.

I worked on and off for the Abercrombie Company for two years, so call me a hypocrite, but I was a full-time college student and they worked around my schedule. I can go on for days about the horrors I experienced there. How one day I forgot to remove my nail polish from the weekend and had to go home and take it off. How we had mandated “overnights” where I would have to work from close of the store until 8 in the morning the next day for certain inventory projects. How shirtless male models would stand outside the store urging young teenage girls to come in and buy something. How a lot of what mattered was literally only skin-deep.

The fact Abercombie is just “getting with the times” more than seven years since I have worked there, even stepped foot into that place, is crazy to me. During my time there I was constantly hearing about lawsuits over discriminatory hiring practices.

Abercrombie never celebrated diversity, be it race, religion or pants size. In real life, every single person is different. Even identical twins have differentiating fingerprints. We didn’t hatch from eggs or pods. To think that Abercrombie “got away” with celebrating everyone being “the same” in a very diverse world for this long is astounding.

For Abercrombie, it’s sink or swim at this point. Adapt or die. Now, a major thing the company has to worry about is if too much damage to their image has been done to ever bounce back from their bigotry and boost sales.

Unlike when Abercrombie was at the height of its popularity, the world has finally begun to see the immense “beautiful” in the “different.” Thus, the less appealing brands like Abercrombie are becoming. Being different is celebrated far more now than it was back even when I was younger.

Cookie cutter clones aren’t the prime examples of “pretty” anymore, and for crying out loud, they never should have been from the start.

5 Beauty Tips You Need When Hot Weather Is Working Against You

beauty tips hot weather

Once the temperatures start rising, the editors here at HuffPost Lifestyle pare down our makeup routines to the essentials: mascara, concealer and tinted lip balm. A full face of makeup just doesn’t hold up (or look as good) when it’s hot and sticky outside.

During the summer months, you can’t go wrong with wearing little-to-no makeup, but it does get tricky when choosing formulas and products that can withstand heat, humidity and even sweat.

To help you avoid hot-weather beauty blunders, we asked Jessica Scantlin, the head makeup artist at Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge, to share her tips and tricks.

1. DO invest in waterproof makeup.

Makeup has come a long way since the bulletproof-but-heavy liners, lipsticks and mascaras from the ’80s. Thanks to cosmetics companies like Stila, Kevyn Aucoin and Bobbi Brown, consumers have access to a wider range of products that truly stay put where you put them, without clogging your pores.

Sweat-Proof Makeup

Becca Beach Tint, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, Kevyn Aucoin Curling Mascara, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick, CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick

2. DON’T use powder products.
“Have you ever baked and placed flour in water without mixing it?” Scantlin asks. “It separates and forms in a clump, which is exactly what powder does to you in the summertime after a long day.” Your skin is extra hydrated in the summer and you will naturally sweat more, so that’s why this pro believes that creams are hands-down the best option.

Unlike matte powders, which sink into the fine lines and creases of your face, cream-based eyeshadow, blush and foundation glide on smoothly and help to create dewy, naturally flushed or bronzed effects.

3. DO set your makeup with a setting spray.

This product provides a light layer of protection to keep your makeup from sliding down your face. Cooling mists also work great to set makeup and leave your skin refreshed during those hot summer months. Scantlin likes to store hers in the fridge to ensure an extra cooling effect. Bonus: Most setting sprays smell great.

Makeup Setting Sprays

4. DON’T wear thick facial creams.

“Never use a thick cream in the summer as this will make your makeup slide right off your face,” said Scantlin. “Use something lighter and make sure to let it absorb before applying your makeup for the day.” She swears by moisturizers with SPF that are lightweight, yet still give your complexion a boost of radiance and hydration.

SPF Moisturizers

Eve Lom Daily Protection+ SPF 50, CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Pure Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer, Sun Bum SPF 30 Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion, La Roche Posay Anthelios SX Moisturizer SPF 15

5. DO go the DIY route to combat under-eye puffiness and oily skin.
Don’t toss your tea bags! After steeping them in a pitcher of iced tea, let them cool and lay them on your eyelids. The caffeine from the tea helps to shrink blood vessels, thus minimizing puffy under-eyes and dark circles.

Want to create a great natural mask for oily skin? Grab some papaya. “Just simply mash it up and apply it to your face. The natural enzymes in papaya help pull out the oil without stripping the skin,” said Scantlin.

How Do You Know When Something is Working?

Is the war on terror – or whatever we call it lately – working?

I think the answer depends on whether you think in terms of goals or systems. If the goal is to stop all future terror attacks on the homeland, we can never know if that is working because we don’t know whether there will be an attack tomorrow. We can feel good about what has happened so far, but the future is a far bigger slice of time than the recent past and we know nothing about how the future will unfold.

But if you see the war on terror as a system, as opposed to a goal, you ask yourself different questions. With a system, you’re looking to continuously improve your knowledge and skills for preventing future attacks. And ideally you want to improve faster than the bad guys are figuring out new methods. But one can never know for sure what the bad guys are planning.

With a systems approach, the government can be expected to try lots of different methods, many of which will turn out to be bad ideas. But we shouldn’t count the number of mistakes to evaluate the system because the whole idea is to try lots of stuff and see what works. With a systems approach you make lots of attempts, evaluate the outcomes and continuously improve. And even “continuous” is hard to measure because progress can come in unexpected steps at any time.

The most successful approach to almost anything in life goes like this: Figure out what works then do it. That’s what the war on terror looks like to me. We observers can’t know whether or not the effort is working in some goal-oriented sense. We can only ask if our knowledge and talents and resources are growing. And clearly they are.

One could argue that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Syria have made things worse by creating more terrorists than we killed. But I think the important metric is how much the United States and its allies have collectively learned in terms of fighting this type of threat.  The knowledge and talents developed along the way are probably the most important change.

Is the war on terror working? I would say yes, from my national perspective, but not because there have been no spectacular attacks on the United States homeland in years. I think success comes in the form of building knowledge and resources that will improve our odds in the future. I can’t know if there was a more cost-effective way to get to this place, or what would happen if we had done things another way. But I am certain that our national capabilities are far better. I call that success.

Someday I expect that the United States and its allies in the fight against ISIS will agree to wall off the new caliphate and cut communications to the outside world. From that point on, any new terror suspects will be thrown over the wall into ISIS territory to keep the threat in one place. And with no outside contact, the society inside the walls will not advance technologically to become a larger threat. Meanwhile, our abilities to guard and defend the wall with technology will grow daily. In the long run, I predict that a prison-caliphate is the only solution. Israel showed that walls can keep danger out. I think we can show that walls can keep danger in as well. And I think we’re heading in that direction. The systems approach ends up there.

You might worry that turning the caliphate into a huge jail would infuriate Muslims outside the caliphate. But keep in mind that no reporters will be allowed into the territory and no news will come out. So allies against ISIS will manufacture some happy-sounding news about how the caliphate is working just great and the people on the inside could not be more pleased with it. And for all we know, that might actually be the case.

These are the types of options we couldn’t discuss with any seriousness before the recent attack in France.  So the terrorists just improved our capabilities by putting more options on the table. Our system trumps their goals.

Many readers have asked why I haven’t been more outspoken about the French newspaper massacre. I feel for the victims and families, of course. But I also feel that history will mark the newspaper attack as the beginning of the end of radical Islam outside the walled Caliphate.
